Glenn Irwin Completes PBM Ducati Line Up For 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following last week’s announcement that Tommy Bridewell will contest the 2023 Bennetts British Superbike Championship for PBM Ducati, the team is delighted to confirm that Glenn Irwin will join him in Paul Bird’s two-rider squad. 32-year-old Irwin, from Carrickfergus in County Antrim, returns for a second stint with the Lake District-based team having raced for them from 2016 to 2018, winning two races in that time and finishing third overall in the 2018 standings. Glenn Irwin PBM Irwin, who won five races this season and finished runner-up in BSB 2022, will contest the 2023 series on a factory-supported Ducati Panigale V4R for the eight-times British Superbike champions. The Ulsterman has also won on a PBM Ducati at the International North West 200 and Macau Grand Prix where he is hoping to return next season. Glenn raced in the National Superstock 600 and British Supersport Championship, where he was a Supersport Cup champion, prior to his move into British Superbikes where he now has 178 career starts with a total of nine victories and 23 additional podiums. As well as his two Macau Grand Prix wins, Glenn has a double Ulster Grand Prix podium to his credit and an incredible six successive North West 200 Superbike race wins. He became the fastest newcomer at the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races with a lap speed of 129.849mph but the PBM team have no plans to contest the 2023 event. Glenn Irwin: “Re-joining PBM after four years apart is something I’m relishing as I feel I’ve improved as a rider and as a person during that time. The experience away has taught me a lot and to be coming back to the most successful team in the paddock is a fantastic opportunity. I’m in a stronger position now and we both know how each other works so the timing is perfect. I want to win, and Birdy wants to win and with Tommy as a very strong teammate, it will drive us all on. I’ve proved I can challenge for the title this year, so the plan is to go one better next season.” Paul Bird, Team Owner: “With Glenn joining Tommy, I think we have an unbelievable line up for 2023 with the riders that finished second and third in this year’s championship. It’s great to have Glenn back as we have had a lot of success together in the past and he’s probably left what I would regard as one of the best, if not the best, team in the paddock to come to us. After a disappointing season for PBM, it will be good to be back at the sharp end.” Pictures attached courtesy of Double Red: Glenn Irwin will race for PBM Ducati in 2023. Read the full article

Rapid Rea leads the way at Silverstone with just 0.7s covering the top 19
Tumblr media
Gino Rea and the Buildbase Suzuki team topped the first Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice session at Silverstone this afternoon, edging out championship leader Glenn Irwin for the top spot, in an incredibly close opener to the weekend. The Silverstone National circuit always produces close times and in the opening session the top 19 riders were covered by 0.797s, and at a fast pace to start the weekend too with the top 14 riders clocking times under the existing lap record. It was a constantly changing session ahead of tomorrow’s opening race with Glenn Irwin and Josh Brookes initially trading places at the top of the times, however in the final two minutes Rea posted his fastest lap that would set the benchmark at the end of day one. Rea took the top spot from Irwin who had only just regained the top position in the closing moments of the session from Brookes, but Jason O'Halloran had also improved his pace, which saw him climb the order into third for McAMS Yamaha and push the VisionTrack Ducati rider into fourth place. Lee Jackson had another top five finish in the session for the Rapid Fulfillment FS-3 Kawasaki team; another rider to fight to hold the position in the closing stages, just having the advantage from Kyle Ryde in sixth place on the second of the Buildbase Suzukis. Fantastic Five after six rounds: Silverstone stage set for next Bennetts BSB marvel
Tumblr media
The 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship title fight is off to a thrilling start, with five different riders winning the opening six rounds ahead of this weekend’s Silverstone event. The Northamptonshire venue’s National circuit produced the closest race finish last year and, with the end of this weekend marking the halfway point in the season, the 75 points up for grabs will undoubtedly prove crucial in the outcome of the title. Glenn Irwin became the fifth different victor at Snetterton last time out, sharing the victories with VisionTrack Ducati’s Christian Iddon and Josh Brookes, and the Honda Racing rider holds the edge in the standings ahead of the next three rounds this weekend. Irwin’s podium consistency on the new CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP, finishing in the top three in all but one race so far, means he leads the standings by 23 points from Oxford Products Racing Ducati’s Tommy Bridewell. Bridewell was a race winner at the opening event of the season at Donington Park, but a hat trick of podiums at Snetterton has put him within striking distance at the top of the standings, leading Ducati’s bid for championship glory ahead of this weekend. The VisionTrack Ducati teammates are just four points apart heading into this weekend, with Iddon currently ahead of Brookes. The 2015 champion is on the charge though, closing down the points deficit following his incident with Andrew Irwin and non-score in Donington Park race three. Read the full article

Haslam wins epic race one scrap as Irwin and Brookes confirmed in the Showdown
clinched the opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship race win at Silverstone this afternoon in a high-speed duel with six different riders sharing the lead during the 30-lap thriller on the National circuit.
The race result also secured Glenn Irwin and Josh Brookes their places alongside Haslam and Jake Dixon in the Showdown, with the fight for the final two places inside the top six going down to the wire in tomorrow’s two races. Bradley Ray and Peter Hickman hold fifth and sixth currently with Danny Buchan, Christian Iddon and Jason O’Halloran still in with a shot of displacing them with a maximum 50 points still up for grabs.
At the start of the race Ray launched off the pole position to lead the pack from Dixon, Brookes and Glenn Irwin, but the Buildbase Suzuki rider crashed out unhurt at Becketts on the fourth lap which ended his hopes of securing his Showdown place early. The 21-year-old holds a 37 point margin over Buchan in seventh in the standings who could only finish 13th in today’s opening contest for FS-3 Racing Kawasaki.
Dixon had meanwhile resumed the lead from Brookes and Glenn Irwin, but soon the 2015 champion had moved into the lead for McAMS Yamaha and he had the edge with a decisive move at Brooklands. He was soon under fire again though but it was from his McAMS Yamaha team-mate Tarran Mackenzie who proved he had the pace to match his more experienced rivals as he claimed the lead at the mid-stage of the race as the pair traded blows for the advantage.
Glenn Irwin was on the move and he then grabbed the lead on the Be Wiser Ducati as Haslam moved into third behind Mackenzie with Brookes dropped to fourth.
The positions were changing constantly in the leading pack and it was a raging battle between Glenn Irwin and Mackenzie for several laps with the pair changing positions every lap for the lead as Haslam closed in.
The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider waited until the closing stages to make his move and he hit the front of the leading pack, but Glenn Irwin came back to regain the position, but on the final lap it was Haslam who held it to the chequered flag just 0.171s ahead of the Be Wiser Ducati despite his huge crash in free practice yesterday.
Mackenzie held on to third to celebrate his first podium in the premier class in only his rookie season ahead of his team-mate Brookes and Dixon who completed the top five for RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki.
Jason O’Halloran kept his Showdown hopes alive with a sixth place after holding off Luke Mossey on the second of the JG Speedfit Kawasakis and Peter Hickman, who held on to sixth place in the standings for Smiths Racing BMW, with a 12 point advantage over Buchan.
Gino Rea scored his best result of the season for the OMG Suzuki team in ninth ahead of Moto Rapido Ducati’s Tommy Bridewell.
Christian Iddon overcame a fractured collarbone in Datatag Qualifying to finish in 15th place in race one, with 22 points separating the Tyco BMW rider from sixth placed Hickman ahead of tomorrow’s decisive two races.

Leon Haslam (JG Speedfit Kawasaki) Race one: 1st “There weren’t many places to make the move as I was really struggling getting out on to the straights so that penalised me quite a bit as I didn’t get the drive. There were two or three places I felt really confident with the bike, but it wasn’t a matter of planning the move it was a case of taking it when I could.
“I had a big moment going into Brooklands trying to pass Glenn the lap before, so I was a bit unsure but made it stick. It was such a fun race. Honestly I didn’t know where the moves were going to come from – it felt like backstreet racing, pulling moves wherever you could!”
Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) Race one: 2nd “It’s been a bit of a scrappy weekend, but I felt pretty comfortable in the race and although second’s a good result, I obviously want to win. We’d all used most of our tyres by the end of the race and although I didn’t miss a gear going onto the straight on the last lap, it wasn’t the cleanest of shifts and that gave Leon his chance.
“I didn’t brake maybe as late as I could have done but I didn’t want to lose the podium either, so we’ll take second place today. I was only a fraction off the win again so hopefully we’ll get one soon and the main thing today was qualifying for the Showdown.”
Tarran Mackenzie (McAMS Yamaha) Race one: 3rd First podium finish in Bennetts BSB “I didn’t expect to lead at all! I didn’t get the best of starts, dropped back to sixth or seventh and had to come through them all.
“Once I got to third and was behind Jake and Brookes I felt really comfortable, so I made some moves and thought if I could lead one lap I’d be happy! The laps kept coming around and nobody was passing me so I just kept my head down.
“I got stuck in and tried to stay in the podium battle, when Josh passed me on the second to last lap I thought it was the last lap so when I came across the line I thought ‘thank goodness for that’ and made sure I got that podium!”

Monster weekend for Josh Brookes as he is crowned King of Brands
Josh Brookes conquered the opposition at Brands Hatch to score his first Bennetts British Superbike Championship win of 2018 and then make it a double to celebrate the Yamaha R1 20th Anniversary in style with the McAMS Yamaha team and bolster his title aspirations.
Brookes had been charging throughout the weekend and in the opening race he launched off the line to hit the front of the pack ahead of Glenn Irwin and Tarran Mackenzie. Instantly Brookes and Irwin were dicing for the leading position but by the start of the second lap the Be Wiser Ducati rider had the edge.
Christian Iddon was moving through the order and soon the freight train of riders at the front had turned into Brookes, Irwin, Iddon, Leon Haslam and Mackenzie. Iddon had moved into second with a move at Druids on lap four.
Irwin was instantly on the attack and reclaimed the position from his Tyco BMW rival. Dan Linfoot’s tough weekend continued as the Honda Racing rider crashed out at Westfield on the sixth lap and he was forced to sit out race two with a suspected fractured scaphoid.
At the front the lead group of five started to edge ahead of the chasing pack with Brookes holding off Glenn Irwin, Iddon, Mackenzie and Haslam. The second McAMS Yamaha was on a charge as Mackenzie moved up the order and into third, but it was a disaster for the Superbike rookie as he crashed out on the penultimate lap from a potential first Bennetts BSB podium finish.
Irwin was pushing to attack for the lead on the final lap but it wasn’t enough and Brookes had a 0.227s edge at the finish line with Haslam promoted to third after Mackenzie’s crash. Dixon had carved his way back up the order to snatch fourth place from Iddon on the final lap with Peter Hickman able to hold off the challenge from Richard Cooper in seventh place.
Knockhill double podium finisher Danny Buchan was eighth ahead of Andrew Irwin and Michael Laverty who completed the top ten.
In race two Brookes again fired off the line into the lead ahead of Glenn Irwin and Cooper who had a storming start to move into third in front of Haslam, Buchan and Dixon. But then there was disaster for Cooper though as he crashed out unhurt at Paddock Hill Bend.
Dixon though had moved into fifth place, making a decisive move down the inside at Druids to grab the position. At the front the leading trio began to break the chasing pack with Brookes, Glenn Irwin and Haslam holding a small advantage over Dixon, Iddon who had moved up the order, and Mackenzie.
Irwin was trying to make a last lap attack, but Brookes had the advantage and held him off to the line by just 0.090s to bag another five Podium Points for his championship challenge with Haslam holding on to the final podium position for JG Speedfit Kawasaki.
Dixon had been under threat from Mackenzie but the RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki rider managed to hold him off in the closing stages of the race with Iddon scoring sixth place for the Tyco BMW team.
Tommy Bridewell had an impressive performance to finish seventh and give the Moto Rapido Ducati team their best result of the season on his debut weekend, passing Buchan on the final lap. James Ellison and Hickman completed the top ten.

Josh Brookes (McAMS Yamaha) Double race winner “It’s a fantastic timing to get the double for Yamaha on the 20th Anniversary of the R1. It’s a perfect gift for them and it was their birthday a couple of weeks ago so I’m sure this will go down well!
“Those opening laps were quite fun for me in race one. This year has been quite frustrating on the track for me not able to reach my potential and the opening lap but today I felt good and we were making passes so I thought ‘why not, we’ll show our hand and see what we can do’.
“As you’re leading the way it feels like you’ve got to find where the limit is. I tried to keep the lead and I felt comfortable for most of the race. Then I made a mistake in turn one and lost the front a little bit as I turned in, then I went wide onto the dusty surface and started to lose the front again and I put my head down and then got better focus and the end of the race was a lot stronger for me.
“I listened to what Glenn said in the post-race interview in race one and I looked where I needed to improve for the second one. Obviously leading most of race one I didn’t see anyone else’s speed or strategy or the way their bike works.
“I knew there were areas that I needed to improve if I was going to keep him behind in race two so I set about trying to not make no mistake and push hard. There was a point where I was starting to edge a gap and then towards the end of the race I started to lose rear grip; it’s natural pushing that sort of pace.
“We were pushing fast lap times all the way through the race. When you are doing that something’s got to be getting worn, either you or the tyre or both, so last two even maybe three laps I was like ‘oh I’m in trouble here’.
“I didn’t have the drive I needed to continue that pace. But fortunately having that tiny gap that I had was enough to keep it right. I came into the last turn and I could hear the thump of the Ducati right behind me but I wasn’t ready to give it up after leading the whole way!

First pole position for Glenn Irwin as he hits top spot at Brands Hatch
Glenn Irwin claimed his first pole position in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch this afternoon, launching the Be Wiser Ducati to the top of the times to hold off Josh Brookes in an incredibly close Datatag Qualifying, with the top nine covered by just 0.696s.
Irwin had topped yesterday’s free practice sessions and set the initial benchmark in Q3 after the first round of fast laps with Luke Mossey, Christian Iddon and Richard Cooper in close contention, but a hectic final stage of qualifying saw positions change throughout.
Tarran Mackenzie leapt into second place for the McAMS Yamaha team but then Jake Dixon moved ahead, but in the closing minutes Brookes fired in a faster lap to claim second place and just 0.081s adrift of the pole position.
The battle was on for the final place on the front row, but it was just 0.001s that settled it with Dixon having the edge to push Mackenzie back onto the second row ahead of Leon Haslam and Luke Mossey on the JG Speedfit Kawasakis.
Christian Iddon heads the third row for Tyco BMW ahead of Andrew Irwin who got caught out in the final minute of the session with a crash at Paddock Hill Bend, but he was able to walk away unhurt, with Richard Cooper completing the top nine riders in Q3.
It will be a tough start for Tommy Bridewell on his debut with the Moto Rapido Ducati team; a crash at the start of qualifying saw him out of contention in Q1 and starting from 26th on the grid for tomorrow’s opening race. James Ellison also slid out of contention in Q2, putting the Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha rider 18th on the grid.
Bennetts British Superbike Championship, Brands Hatch, Datatag Qualifying:
Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) 1m:24.628s
Josh Brookes (McAMS Yamaha) +0.081s
Jake Dixon (RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki) +0.140s
Tarran Mackenzie (McAMS Yamaha) +0.141s
Leon Haslam (JG Speedfit Kawasaki) +0.178s
Luke Mossey (JG Speedfit Kawasaki) +0.505s
Christian Iddon (Tyco BMW) +0.571s
Andrew Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) +0.632s
Richard Cooper (Buildbase Suzuki) +0.696s
The sixth round of the 2018 Bennetts British Superbike Championship take place at Brands Hatch on July 20/21/22. For more information visit www.britishsuperbike.com
Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) Pole position “I am really, really happy with that! We started the weekend in free practice one and we were really, strong for so early in the weekend and the lap times were coming no matter what lap we were on, and on an old tyre.
“We had a plan for FP2 which then was wet, but we went out and scrubbed in some pads and had a little bit of fun. I went round with Jake and watched him nearly high side himself! I was actually on the front brake as we came out of Clearways and the team were giving me the ‘in’ sign on the board for five laps but I ignored it as I was having a lot of fun!
“I really struggled earlier and I thought ‘was yesterday just one of those days I clicked and today isn’t?’. But we went back to what we knew, back to exactly how we rolled out yesterday morning and fine-tuned it. The guys know you’ve got to do a ’24 to take pole here, the lower the better, and after Q2 there were two areas where I knew that we needed something.
“Fair play to the boys in the garage; they came up with the goods. To be honest the bike was faultless so I’ve got to thank the PBM team.”

Glenn Irwin and Josh Brookes headline opening free practice at Brands Hatch
Glenn Irwin and Josh Brookes kicked off the Brands Hatch round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship by topping a free practice session each on the opening day, on the Grand Prix circuit, ahead of tomorrow’s Datatag Qualifying.
Irwin led the opposition in the opening session, firing the Be Wiser Ducati to the top of the times in dry conditions to hold a narrow 0.115s advantage over McAMS Yamaha’s Brookes at the chequered flag.
Brookes had been closing the gap to Irwin, but in the closing stages his team-mate Tarran Mackenzie nipped into second place to push the 2015 champion back into third. Brookes responded though with less than five minutes on the clock to move into second and close the gap to the Be Wiser Ducati.
In the morning session James Ellison made it three Yamahas inside the top four as he pushed Luke Mossey back into fifth place on the leading JG Speedfit Kawasaki, with Christian Iddon completing the top six for Tyco BMW. That pushed Jake Dixon into seventh place with Peter Hickman holding off championship leader Leon Haslam and Michael Laverty who completed the top ten.
The second free practice though had Brookes at the top of the timesheets; the Australian mastering the changing conditions following a brief shower before the session. Several of the riders chose to wait until later in the second free practice to head out the on circuit once the track dried, but Brookes continued to live up to his reputation, and was the first rider on track.
Brookes set the initial pace and it wasn’t until the closing ten minutes when the times began to tumble with the final 60 seconds a frantic flurry of improvements with Glenn Irwin and Jake Dixon moving up the order before Brookes returned to the top.
Ellison posted a time in his final run of the session to climb back up the order into fourth place with Mason Law completing the top five for Team WD-40 Kawasaki. Dan Linfoot was sixth fastest for Honda Racing, moving ahead of Gino Rea. The OMG Racing Suzuki rider held off Andrew Irwin who used free practice two to get a feeling for the Superbike in the different conditions, as he continues his rookie season in the premier class with Luke Hedger and Christian Iddon completing the top ten.
Bennetts British Superbike Championship, Brands Hatch, Free Practice 1:
Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) 1m:25.523s

Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) “It felt good to top the session this morning; especially because it was a consistent pace and wasn’t just with a new tyre, which will be important for the races on Sunday.
“The first practice actually makes me excited for tomorrow to see what we can do in qualifying, so I have started the weekend happy.
“Some riders sat out this afternoon but it was still important to get out there; we scrubbed in some new brake pads and the times did get faster towards the end when the track dried.
“I actually had a lot of fun this afternoon and it is important to keep your eye in; it might not be that we have conditions like that this weekend but you never know when we will have another session or race like that, so any practice for that could prove crucial later in the year.”
