aeri reviews “Period: Cube ~Shackles of Amadeus~”

i’m late writing this review, but eh, who cares, at least, i did than never (⁠ ⁠´⁠◡⁠‿⁠ゝ⁠◡⁠`⁠)

—DESCRIBE WHAT THE GAME’S ABOUT—

kazuha hanamiya, the game’s MC, is on her way to her school and happens to encounter her friend— no sprite, irrelevant— and talked about random stuff until the topic shifted to a fascinating mystery... about her brother who happens she couldn’t contact lately thus concluding that he might be missing— yeaaahh— and of course, she also conveniently her childhood friend— yes, again— hiroya tachibana, and they talk about her brother, and then decide to investigate until, well, shit happens— them going to the inescapable and deadly server of world v

—INCOMING SPOILERS AHEAD—

—RADIUS—

when i saw tomoaki maeno voiced a cold LI, i cheered you all— i got stoked because i loved him voicing as a cold character since i met him through kiyokazu fujimoto from kobato!

now that i mentioned cold LI, yes, radius is that very definition!

if you came here with an expectation that this game would be like SAO, well, say no more, radius’ backstory as to why he’s cold is similar to kirito’s backstory— he had a party once, but because shit happens, he blamed himself for not protecting them and letting them die because he’s weak and thus, embraced the solitude

and ngl, this lowkey surprised me since i expected his backstory would be related to this work? since he’s an idol and all irl? not predictable and i was like, “ain’t no way he became elsa because he made his comrades die before like kirito, right? right?” and NOPE lol

and next point, it felt like something was off the way his route was written, i could understand why radius would fall for kazuha, and as to why kazuha fell for him... uhh, i don’t know why?? i mean, one would reason out that radius saved her and had been lowkey nice to her— but the bar was too low lmfao but as they say count your blessings lol, which is a valid reason, but the execution could’ve been better? well, this game’s execution should’ve been better in the first place—

ahem, going back to the track— although one would say the MBE was braindead and made no sense, which i agree, but at same time disagree because it’s just too fascinating to see how radius would go through the lengths not to lose kazuha from him since he’s alone (irl he hates his idol job and ol, he’s pushing everyone away, and he’s traumatized of losing someone precious to him) and now he tasted something sweet as hers, so how could he let go of her? A YANYAN ◉⁠‿⁠◉

about his GE, it all ended well for those who were trapped in the world v, at least, it felt like a label of better outcome for everybody than his MBE where radius’ like, “everyone doesn’t fucking matter except kazuha ofc” lol

—ASTRUM—

i had no single idea what would happen in this route— and it took me by surprise— i mean, he’s like a prince you can read in a fairytale book— perfect, ideal, and respected— although others like to point out how exaggerated his actions are because it’s like they’re, “dude, this is just a game, it ain’t that serious”— but in his defense, this ain’t no game; it’s a game of death, mind you lol— ik there are times he’s gone too far of acting, but i can see that there’s some sprinkled of truth to it lol, like him acting out of best interests for kazuha

ig that he must be from a drama club irl, but surprise, surprise, he’s not, and he’s not even respected by his classmates irl and it is implied or not at all that everyone’s creeped out by him lmfao and he’s timid, yet he has a sour oomph to him when he talks back, which i find even more charming!

i think this is also where kazuha shines the most— ppl might be too critical of her, but she’s active in this route and especially near the end— he lets her work together with him instead of him being “leave it all to me!” and trusted that she can do it in ol while he handles irl!

i also can see how kazuha fell for astrum since in the start of his route he takes care of her and lets her childhood friend, hiroya, go with the angel faction so that she had a companion after she tried to convince him despite the long lasting feud between the angels and demons in this gotdamn game lol

i do think he liked her, but when she discovered who he is irl, he thinks that the image he built in ol was now shattered, but the fact she didn’t shy away from him is what made him fall harder too hihi

i also like— i forgot what you call that— where he activates a chain that connects the two of them— it’s a support power where the caster would receive the pain of their target instead when the target was injured— in other words, whenever she got hurt, she won’t feel the pain, and he will receive the pain instead— it’s just SO GOOD pls

as for his MBE, I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT... astrum got impatient and killed the mastermind instead— and kazuha didn’t want him to be deemed as murderer so she made a world for him to stay in his ideal image LIKE KAZUHA WENT WITH THIS ACT SO HE COULD BE A PRINCE THAT WOULD SAVE HER THAT’S INSANE

OMFG KAZUHA IS INSANE IN THIS GAME TOO— I THOUGHT LIs AREN’T A SURPRISE TO BE A YANYAN, BUT INCLUDING THE MC TOO?? ヘ⁠（⁠。⁠□⁠°⁠）⁠ヘ

as for his GE, astrum and kazuha saved the day, and all is good— NO ONE GOT INSANE THANK HEAVENS, just like what happened in radius’ route, everyone was spared from that project BS lol

—DEMENTO—

from the name itself, and experiencing his BS previously— i’m already prepared to take my brain off ig

i’m surprised that demento’s not popular enough in trash LIs? he’s literally a psychopath, my dude— THAT’S A WALKING FULL PSYCHOPATH THERE MY GUY

he explicitly told kazuha that he loved the feeling of killing as he felt that he was alive by doing it!

take note, this is the deadly server, world v, where if one got killed ol, they would also be killed irl— yes, in other words, HE’S A PSYCHO— his killing count? i couldn’t imagine

and lemme tell you, idk what kazuha saw with this dude like? he has no zero redeeming qualities— he treated kazuha like a garbage— yes, he’s an LI that doesn’t hesitate to hurt kazuha even in other routes— and idk how kazuha survived thus far maybe because she’s just the almighty lol

idk, but since this game went to be published first, i’m obliged to believe that yang was also based off from this LI— in terms of feeling the thrill to fight and felt empty inside— lmfao and yes, both games are from otomate— not a far-fetched speculation if i say so myself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

about his MBE, this is the ending that makes sense although at the same time doesn’t make any sense lmfao— it stays true to his nature

about his GE, it’s BS, but at least in his after story, he had a feeling that he was trash although he doesn’t remember fully lol— ig old habits couldn’t die-hard?

—ZAIN—

previously, ik that he was made for a purpose ever since radius’ route lol

zain’s like a newborn baby, not totally, but he doesn’t know normal things that humans do— however, he acts like one— it’s not a surprise since he’s an NPC made in the game lol

what i find hilarious is that he might not know things like normal humans do— yk like a lost sheep without a shepherd, but he’s so pushy and has tendencies to possess kazuha— a yanyan— lmfao because she never experienced his fixation or attraction towards her, like there’s this ಠ⁠,⁠_⁠｣⁠ಠ scene where i was like, “wtf is going on??” i can’t even explain it, but the way the game described it feels like he’s having s€x with her, but at the same time don’t lol and after that BS, she gained a debuff status, which i hilariously think “that’s probably her after he climaxed her to the brim, isn’t it? because SHE’S TIRED!”

this route is just a massive wtf— don’t get me started with him merging with demento and their minds are mixed and one 😂

as for his MBE, as expected— braindead— A YANYAN RIGHT THERE FELLAS

as for his GE, imo it got dragged for a bit like it didn’t have to go that far, but maybe that’s just me ┐⁠(⁠ ⁠˘⁠_⁠˘⁠)⁠┌

—HIROYA—

the game’s poster boy!

he’s the best side character in astrum’s route so far and looks out for kazuha’s best interests and safety in any route

however, he has a side of wtf to him esp. in radius’ route— and it didn’t help that i had my guard up— why is it always the childhood friend— going to astrum’s route and then was like, “HUH?? ಠ⁠_⁠ಠ??” and looking back, i think the mastermind pushed him to the limit that’s why he acted that way in radius’ route

his second wtf, although lite— and might the bar is low to the non-otoge ppl lol— is on his own route where kazuha’s injured, but she keeps it a secret, and ofc, he’s keen, he notices it and just randomly pins her down and licks it tf?? like, “my guy, you didn’t have to go that far??”

the plot reveal is that he’s afraid of her dying since he blamed himself for the car accident that she went through and ofc the mastermind blamed him for it and even resented him lol

overall, i think his route is also natural to be the last one or second to the last to be played— there’s still libera— and since kazuha’s familiar with him— childhood friends and their cheat code, the chemistry between them is there and natural

as for his MBE, OH GOODNESS— KAZUHA WENT INSANE AGAIN— SHE ACTED LIKE AN INNOCENT CHILD, BUT SHE LITERALLY STABBED THE MASTERMIND, AND WAS LIKE, “you make hiroya sad and suffer, so die”?? AND SHE MADE A WORLD FOR HIROYA AND THOUGHT HE DIDN’T NEED ANYONE, BUT HER 😭 ISTG EVERYONE GOT PROBLEMATIC SHIT IN THIS GAME

as for his GE, as previously, the mastermind’s grand scheme’s stopped and everyone’s safe from being dead basically and hiroya’s childhood friend no more!

—LIBERA—

ngl when i saw the guide i was like, “how the hell is this LI supposed to be second to the last??” because this LI so far isn’t active— or rather, just a minor appearance in any route besides his own lol

but now it makes sense once i did his route—

he and kazuha have parallels with each other— both have an older brother who dotes on them— though kazuha’s brother is on another level— moving on, he’s nice and helpful towards kazuha and hiroya at the beginning

he’s not like the others who would go and level up since he values his life so much and i picked up that he must’ve disliked death, but the question is, “when? how?”

before that— he also has a moment where i went: “ಠ⁠,⁠_⁠｣⁠ಠ” what moment? where kazuha and him went to a dress store and he insisted kazuha putting the dress, but she took longer than expected, so he forced himself inside the dressing room tf 😭

going back to the main point, he disliked death because 1) he’s sick and felt like a burden to everyone, and 2) the main factor is that his older brother died from an accident, and due to the pent up sadness that their mother went through he heard their mother said, “since he’s sickly than his brother, i thought he would die first!” and i don’t blame him for acting cold towards his parents because that shit really hurt

it’s revealed that he didn’t like real life since his life was shitty there lol and he and kazuha argued with each other and he coldly wanted to shut kazuha away from him, but obviously that didn’t work and he’s just a massive stubborn dude that couldn’t say that he did care for her once he got to know her even if his intention wasn’t pure from the beginning— well, he butters up players to get their items lol

overall, the writing flow feels alright— there’s this knowing each other, and then comes the revelation to make it spicier, and then reconciliation as a development between the two

as for his MBE, KAZUHA IS REALLY INSANE MY GUY— SHE REALLY SAID NOTHING MATTERS BUT LIBERA’S HAPPINESS LMFAO SO SHE MADE A WORLD FOR JUST THE TWO OF THEM— well, libera’s brother is included since he’s a good brother to him lol— AND SHE REMOVED THE PAIN IN HIS ASS LIKE HIS PARENTS BECAUSE HE WAS HURT BY HIS MOTHER’S WORDS BACK THEN LMFAO

as for his GE, well— this feels repetitive, but yay to the grand scheme getting stopped lol, but that last CG where i saw a grown-up libera looks hot— it’s like attaining his undatable older brother lmfao

—SECRET PLAYER—

THIS ROUTE— THIS GOTDAMN ROUTE

i’ve heard this infamous onii-chan waaaay back then, but at the time, i was a person who wouldn’t touch an otome full of negativity, but i am a changed person and won’t be swayed by anyone until i see it for myself— and BOI THEY DID NOT KID AROUND HOW TRASH THIS IS LMFAO

i already knew this oniichan’s shady ever since in radius’ route since he’s behind why anyone wouldn’t return to the real world and trapped the players in world v to harvest souls for his period: cube project lmfao

he also deceived everyone to clear the ark so everyone could return, but it turns out those who would clear it would be transported to the new world— in other words, he wanted to test who among the players are strong and deserve to live in his utopia and possibly protect kazuha from harm— IT’S FUCKING NUTS MY GUY THAT’S STRAIGHT UP MASS MURDER THERE

in his route, he pretends to be this harmless “informant cute monster” and that’s even more disturbing lmfao and whenever kazuha’s unconscious or asleep HE FRIGGIN M0LESTS HER BRUV 😭 (idk if that’s only m0lest implication because when i first played it, i assumed he r*ped her too ngl)

also, he’s like, “ah~? he’s dead~” like he KILLED A PLAYER AFTER HE HEARD KAZUHA’S GOING TO BE HARMED

he also confesses to kazuha that HE WANTS TO MESS HER UP— i don’t want to go into details, but it made my skin crawl— view with discretion

I HONESTLY DON’T GET WHY KAZUHA’S ATTRACTED TO HIM?? I’M SORRY 😭

as for his MBE, this is braindead, yet it makes sense— true to his character— it’s also disturbing if i say so myself

as for his GE, THIS IS JUST A PISS POOR OF AN EXCUSE TO SALVAGE HIS BS— THE ICK ABOUT BEING BROTHER AND SISTER TO ROMANTIC BS KILL ME NOW PLEASE YOU ALL DON’T HAVE SIBLINGS TO FEEL THIS WAY—

despite the ick i felt, it’s still a good read of a garbage and i believe otomate is a coward for not making this an age gap and blood-related— i mean who in the world made a decision to make their hair both orange and i’m much convinced about ‘romantic’ stuff if oniichan’s a teenager (or young adult) instead of a kid too— i believe he’s only three year old older than her??

—SYSTEM—

again, it’s visual novel, so whatever you choose affects the ending— what i’m going to say is that the sprites are dynamic with eyes and lips, so whoever is an enthusiast of that, you’ll like this!

besides that, i’m also a fan of choices being formatted as your turn-based JRPG, but too bad, it’s not a real JRPG, and the designs of the monsters looks fantastic too although generic, but for an otome— it’s better!

also the OSTs/BGMs is phenomenal! for a hot bloody mess of a game, i’d say the music is the one of the game’s strong suits! i wish the titles on it weren’t like the standard name ‘untitled’ whenever you save files on your device though lol

—OVERALL THOUGHTS—

HOT BLOODY MESS— that’s all what i can describe to this game— if you’re too curious about how bad it could possibly be then go ahead by all means lmfao just be warned that you don’t need braincells in this game so it could be bearable for you— but it still holds special to my heart 💖

also, i wouldn’t defend kazuha from getting thrown rocks, but i can go down along with her since despite her flaw, i still love her as an MC who would go by any EXTREME means to make her chosen LI to be happy in MBE and sometimes doesn’t question or fight back the said LI— it’s like she’s willing to be there— IT’S INSANE BRUV— she’s not entirely useless imo and uses her BS wish or almighty powers for everyone to win and doesn’t die in every endings unlike other MC just go full 🧍‍♀️ there or just go drop dead in their chosen LI’s BE ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

CLAMP drabbles (5/5)

Last part of the CLAMP drabbles. And I’m kind-of running out of stories I actually have anything to say about... hm... well, unless I count all the WIPs I have stored in my computer because wow, if I do count them, I don’t think I’ll ever run out of things to say, actually...

Well. So. On to the drabbles! This time we have Codependence, Fear of death and Hopes of normalcy. For these ones, we have... some Referenced Major Character Death, I guess? Well... it’s more of “Kobato” than “Referenced Character Death”, but, sure.

So. Today’s drabbles! Let’s start with Codependence, because so. Hmm... It’s another Tsubasa drabble; this one is, yet again, told by Fai (Fye, Fay, I don’t know which writing is the official one and I never even know which one I prefer, so it might... vary from story to story, actually). This time, though, we have some KuroFai!!! Yay!!!

So, yes. I love KuroFai. Especially late-mangá KuroFai, honestly. So, while writing these drabbles I felt that I needed to write some KuroFai, and I was there considering what it could be about... and it somehow ended up being about all the nicknames Fai gave Kurogane along the road. And then it got some more content and became about them needing each other. Because that’s how my brain works, sometimes, I guess. Though it’s more of Fai needing Kurogane than the other way around... whatever, I guess. Works too.

So. After that we have... Fear of death. Which is my only work in Kobato ever. Mostly because I took forever to actually get into Kobato, because I at first thought it was boring because I got sleepy watching it. Then, I decided to try again (a couple years later, I think), managed to finish the anime series... and went to the mangá. And it’s beautiful. So very, very beautiful and sad. Which... might just be my favourite combination.

Anyway. So, yeah. I got into Kobato and then, while writing the drabbles, I was just like, “well, let’s do one for them too!” -- and, because Kobato is so beautiful and sad, I, of course, had to write something sad.

This one was actually awful in the original version, wow. Seriously. But then, when rewriting/editing/translating it, I added some things, changed a few other things, and... generally... worked a bit more on it. And now I’m a bit... happy with it.

I like the pairing (Kobato and Fujimoto are cute together), but I didn’t want to make it too much romantic, I guess... though I failed pretty hard at that. There’s seriously no doubt about Kobato’s feelings in this one. Like, the whole thing is Kobato thinking about Fujimoto. And loving him. And missing him, despite not being over just yet. Like, seriously:

When I asked myself if you would miss me, I couldn’t decide which answer pained me the most.

She seriously just goes like that, and I’m just. I was the one to write it, but still... it’s just... well. Somehow, there is grief in her... and she is the one dying. I don’t even understand, but it happened, I guess.

(I blame CLAMP. I always blame them when things are weird and sad all at the samet ime.)

And, at last but not least, we got the one other X story, Hopes of Normalcy! In Hopes we get some more Hokuto (from Tokyo Babylon), because I like her (I think I said that already?). Seriously. That’s why I chose to write this one. I saw Hokuto in X interacting with Kakyou and went like, “ohhhh, need me more Hokuto!”...

So I wrote Hopes. As Kakyou’s feelings about Hokuto.

Those two are cute together, too... shame it’s such a terrible tragedy, the two of them. You know what happened to Hokuto from the very beginning, but it’s still cute watching them... until you remember, “oh yeah, she’s dead”. My hearts. They don’t deserve that!

Still, I wrote this anyway! And it’s quite ridiculous, and mainly focused on Hokuto showing the beach (and, through it, the outside world) to a kid who’s never seen the world, so it’s... weird. I guess. And a bit sad. Hmmm...

(let’s blame CLAMP again???)

Anyway! Yes. That’s it for these drabbles, I guess. Shame, shame. Still, I liked doing this. Maybe I’ll... recommend a couple individual ones, when I talk about Memories... that’d be nice... give me something to write about...
