Trident Clipper V8 (1 of 39).
Trident Cars first manufactured sportscars between 1966 and 1974 - it was briefly resurrected in 1976 - and finally ceased production in 1978. And yes, until fairly recently we’d never heard of them either! The car you’re looking at here, the Trident Clipper V8, was originally intended to be a TVR Trident. Designed to head the TVR range at the time, the Blackpool firm’s planning was so advanced it even featured in early TVR brochures and adverts.Powered by the Ford 289 engine, the body was styled by Trevor Fiore, who went on to become Director of Design for Citroen. Performance was impressive with a top speed of 150mph and a 0-60mph of five seconds. One rung lower was the Trident Venturer V6, which uses the Ford three-litre Essex engine sitting in a lengthened Triumph TR6 chassis, a canny choice as it comes complete with coil-spring independent suspension on all four corners and Girling disc brakes at the front.Lacking the performance of the V8 model – a top speed of 120mph and 9.2 seconds to 60mph were the headline figures - it was identical to the V8 model bar the engine and ‘box. Completing the three-model lineup was the TR6-engined Tycoon.
TVR's financial troubles - almost a constant in the firm’s history - led to the Trident project being estranged and Bill Last, a TVR dealer, set up a new company. The agreement that had been thrashed out with TVR allowed for The Trident Company to build and sell the entire Trident range.
In all, Trident manufactured 39 Clippers, 84 Venturers and (unsurprisingly) only 7 Tycoons, making this both one of the rarest and most interesting marques you have possibly never heard of.

Car Spot: A Mustang that's not a Mustang
When is a Mustang not a Mustang? When it's a T-5, this week's car spot.
At least in Germany … The hottest car on the planet in 1966 was the Ford Mustang. By the end of the year, it set an all-time sales record with just over 600,000 rolling off the assembly line. Mustangs were everywhere, except in Germany where somebody else, a truck manufacturer, had a trademark for the name. Ford could have paid Krup Manufacturing $10,000 ($94,349.07 in 2023 dollars) to secure…

Studebaker Avanti
The Avanti was based on a modified version of the Studebaker Lark 109″ convertible chassis and it was given a modified Studebaker 289 Hawk V8 engine mated to either a manual or automatic transmission. Fiberglass was chosen instead of steel for the body as it would reduce tooling costs and the car’s weight, plus it would draw favorable comparisons with the Corvette which had a body made from the same material.Unusually, a Paxton supercharger was offered as an option on the Avanti, the already powerful 240 hp V8 would be upped to 289 hp with it fitted, and it was a version of this supercharged model that would set the 29 world land speed records at Bonneville. The Avanti was also given power disc brakes up front with finned drum brakes in the rear, and independent suspension in the front with coil springs and a live axle in the rear on leaf springs – with anti-roll bars front and back. The curb weight of the car was 3,095 lbs (or 1,404 kgs) and it had similar performance to the Ford Mustang when it was released. Road & Track Magazine managed a 0-62 mph dash in 7.3 seconds onto a top speed of 120 mph in a supercharged R2 Avanti in period. Due to financial issues Studebaker would only build the Avanti from 1962 to 1963 with fewer than 6,000 made. The factory would be closed down and by 1966 Studebaker as an automaker would be no more.

1967 Ford Mustang
The 1967 model year Mustang was the first significant redesign of the original model. Ford's designers began drawing up a larger version even as the original was achieving sales success, and while "Iacocca later complained about the Mustang's growth, he did oversee the redesign for 1967 ."The major mechanical feature was to allow the installation of a big-block V8 engine. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967 model) and chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance 289 option was placed behind the newer 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE engine from the Ford Thunderbird, which was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. During the mid-1968 model year, a drag racer for the street could be ordered with the optional 428 cu in (7.0 L) Cobra Jet engine which was officially rated at 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) all of these Mustangs were issued R codes on their VINs.
