Werner Mölders (1913 - 1941). Mölders wanted to become a soldier ever since he was a child. He was able to join the Reichswehr and soon discovered his passion for aviation. After his flight training he worked as a teacher in the still secret Luftwaffe. Like Galland he volunteered to go to Spain, becoming his replacement after Galland had to return home.
During WW2 Mölders soon became one of the leading aces, and was celebrated as a hero. Mölders was a devout Catholic but as religion wasn´t well received by prevailing political forces, this fact was hidden by the press.
He was a skilled fighter pilot but was even more interested in becoming a good leader to his subordinates and wanted to develope more efficient fighting methods. Already in Spain he perfected the "Schwarm" (created by Günther Lützow). This replaced the "Kette" (three planes flying together). The Schwarm consisted of four planes (two "Rotte"), a technique which was later adopted by all sides.
He was appointed as General der Jagdflieger in 1941 but he was not able to implement his good ideas. In late 1941 Mölders went to visit the Eastern Front to gain experience of the fighting there, as he was only familiar with the Western Front. From there he was suddenly called to Berlin to attend the funeral of Ernst Udet. On the flight they encountered bad weather but Mölders did not want to be late so pressed on. The plane crashed, killing Mölders. He was buried opposite of Udet in the Invalidenfriedhof Berlin.
