After Michael Bay’s second or third Transformers movie, it became clear that this franchise would be offering nothing but loud robot fights, incoherent plotting, and stereotype-driven humor. But audiences were happy to go along for the ride to a certain extent. It wasn’t until Bay’s fifth entry in the series, 2017’s The Last Knight, that Transformers’ reign over the box office came under threat.

Just when it seemed like the Transformers franchise was dead in the water, Travis Knight came along with Bumblebee, an ‘80s-set spin-off. Bumblebee isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it is more enjoyable than all the previous Transformers movies combined. Now, the franchise just might have a chance.

10 Bumblebee (2018)

The opening prologue of Bumblebee set on Cybertron is the Transformers movie fans had wanted to see for over a decade. Michael Bay made a string of action movies about cars turning into robots and punching each other, but this is a rich sci-fi universe.

Travis Knight injected some fun back into the Transformers franchise after it had devolved into incomprehensible dull action scenes (complete with distracting aspect ratio changes) and eye-rolling “jokes.” Hailee Steinfeld’s Charlie Watson is a far more compelling human lead than Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky or Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager ever were.

9 Fast Five (2011)

When Vin Diesel and Paul Walker returned to The Fast and the Furious franchise for the fourth installment, a pseudo-reboot titled Fast & Furious, they turned it from a street racing series into a straightforward action franchise. But that movie was pretty weak.

In 2011, Diesel and Walker knocked it out of the park and turned Fast & Furious into a must-see blockbuster franchise with Fast Five. With the story of Toretto’s crew embarking on a daring heist in Rio, this became a series of large-scale actioners about mercenaries getting involved in big, explosive set pieces across the world. With bigger and bigger action sequences, The Fast Saga has essentially become an exercise in cinematic one-upmanship since Fast Five shook things up.

8 Batman Begins (2005)

George Clooney joked publicly that his movie Batman & Robin was so bad that it may have killed the franchise. This almost became a reality, as Warner Bros. struggled to find a director with a vision for a Batman reboot that would redeem the property in the eyes of fans who were still scorned by Joel Schumacher’s infamous movie.

Of course, the franchise was saved when Christopher Nolan came along with a gritty, semi-realistic take on the Bat’s origin story. Batman Begins’ dark tone changed the face of blockbusters forever.

7 Skyfall (2012)

After Daniel Craig’s stint as James Bond got off to a terrific start with the breathtaking realism of Casino Royale, his second outing Quantum of Solace arrived as a bitter disappointment. It’s just a generic action movie when Bond movies can be so much more (as demonstrated by Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me, and GoldenEye).

Then, with Craig’s third Bond movie Skyfall, director Sam Mendes married Martin Campbell’s gritty realism from Casino Royale with the silly gadgets and formulaic plotting of the franchise’s classic era. The result was the first Bond movie to top $1 billion at the box office.

6 Scream 4 (2011)

The first Scream movie was praised as a sharp satire of slashers, then the second one tackled slasher sequels. With Scream 3, the franchise risked settling into the kind of humdrum slash-‘em-up series it had originally sought to lampoon.

Then, with Scream 4, the franchise was redeemed. The fourth movie updated the franchise’s satire and commented on the rise of torture porn in contemporary horror cinema.

After years of critically panned Star Trek movies revolving around The Next Generation cast, J.J. Abrams rebooted the series with new actors playing the iconic roles from The Original Series. This could’ve easily gone terribly, but the 2009 Star Trek reboot is surprisingly great.

Although Abrams’ action-driven, planet-hopping storytelling is more akin to Star Wars than Star Trek, the movie did succeed in getting casual moviegoers interested in Trek. And Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were perfectly matched as Kirk and Spock.

4 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Brian De Palma’s initial Mission: Impossible movie was an agreeable spy thriller whose central set piece — Tom Cruise hanging from wires during a daring infiltration — has become iconic. John Woo’s second one was a little too silly to be entertaining, then J.J. Abrams’ threequel settled into mediocre action movie territory.

Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol reinvigorated the franchise by sending Cruise out onto the facade of the tallest building in the world. Now, the Mission: Impossible movies are must-see actioners, because Cruise keeps pushing himself to do crazier and crazier stunts.

3 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did almost everything wrong — making all the same mistakes as Spider-Man 3 and a bunch of new ones for good measure — Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming reinvigorated the Spidey solo movies.

Hot off his highly anticipated debut in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland deftly proved he could carry his own movie in Homecoming. Watts made the film as a John Hughes-style high school comedy, which gave it a fresh, unique feel. A year later, a new bar was set for the Spider-Man franchise by the animated masterpiece Into the Spider-Verse.

2 Men In Black 3 (2012)

As has been pointed out, the critically panned Men in Black II just rehashed all the jokes from the first Men in Black movie and repackaged them as winks to the audience.

The third movie, Men in Black 3, shook up the formula with a time travel plot that saw Will Smith’s Agent J going back to the ‘60s to team up with the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent M, played by Josh Brolin (whose Jones impression is spot-on).

1 Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

George Miller’s third Mad Max movie, Beyond Thunderdome, was one of the ‘80s-est movies of the ‘80s. The fourth movie was stuck in development hell for years. Miller spent so long trying to get it made that at the beginning of pre-production, Mel Gibson was supposed to stay in the role of Max.

After Beyond Thunderdome had lost the visceral intensity of The Road Warrior, Fury Road brought it back in spades with a feature-length car chase through a post-apocalyptic wasteland that’s been praised as one of the greatest action movies ever made.

While Not As Good As The Last Film, This One Has It's Moments The Story While Boring At The Beginning Catches Up Around The Middle Of It, The Characters Except For The Bad Guy Are Good, The Cars Weren't Very Impressive But At This Point They Were Changing Their Status Quo From Being A Series Of Street Racing Films To A Series Of Heist Films, Sort Of Like Oceans 11 With Cars But Still, It's A Film Worth A Watch And I Say See It...

His rise to the A-list began with a supporting role in the Fast & Furious franchise, but it wasn’t long before he was headlining his own vehicles. 10 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (67%)

When it was announced that the Fast & Furious franchise would unleash a spin-off pairing up the mismatched characters played by Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson, fans were a little dubious. And then when the first trailer was released, showing Idris Elba’s villain giving himself superpowers, they were even more dubious.

But the movie actually turned out really well. It gets plenty of steam out of the hilarious energy shared by Statham and Johnson, and in between that are plenty of well-crafted action sequences, courtesy of Atomic Blonde director David Leitch. Leave your brain at the door and you’ll love it.

9 The Rundown (69%)

Long before Dwayne Johnson was the biggest movie star on the planet, he teamed up with American Pie’s Seann William Scott for this action comedy, which isn’t a stone-cold masterpiece, but is a lot of fun. Johnson plays a bounty hunter who is sent deep into the jungles of Brazil to track down his boss’ son, played by Scott.

As expected, the two are a delightfully mismatched pair – both likable in their own right, but with virtually nothing in common – that keep this cross between Indiana Jones and Midnight Run chugging along for its 104-minute runtime. It won’t leave you disappointed.

The sixth Fast & Furious movie was Dwayne Johnson’s second outing in the franchise, but he was already a welcome and ingratiated member of the central family. While his first turn as Luke Hobbs was antagonistic towards Dom Toretto and his crew, this time around, he’s an ally of their team.

This was the movie that brought the gang to London and culminated in a set piece that took place on the longest runway in the world. As always, the laws of physics are ripped apart and put back together again, but when the action is this fun and the cast is this likable, who even cares?

7 Central Intelligence (71%)

Although Rawson Marshall Thurber’s action comedy Central Intelligence has a pretty generic plot with predictable twists, one-dimensional characters, and forced messages about bullying, it gets plenty of mileage out of the chemistry shared by Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Hart and Johnson are individually two of the most energetic, bubbly, charismatic leading men at the multiplex right now, so it’s hardly surprising that, together, they’re dynamite. Central Intelligence is not an all-time classic of the buddy cop genre – it falls into a lot of the genre’s clichés and pitfalls – but its two stars make it more than watchable.

6 Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (76%)

This reboot of the Jumanji franchise was far better than it had any right to be. To take a beloved family comedy – and one starring the late, great Robin Williams, no less – and update it for a modern audience to turn a quick buck seemed like one of Hollywood’s worst ideas.

However, Jake Kasdan came in with a clear vision and a passion for his newly created characters and delivered an exciting, energetic cinematic ride whose sequel is eagerly awaited. He also shook up the formula in an exciting way by turning it from a board game into a video game, making way for some hilarious body-swap comedy involving the characters’ avatars (the rippling Dwayne Johnson, for example, is the avatar of a dorky, introverted teenage boy).

5 Fast Five (77%)

Dwayne Johnson used to joke that he was “franchise Viagra” – the guy who would join a franchise that was on the rocks like the G.I. Joe movies or the DC Extended Universe and give it the shot in the arm it needed to get back on track.

This all began with his first performance as Luke Hobbs, who is now a member of Dom Toretto’s crew, but started out as their adversary. In Fast Five, Hobbs is hot on Toretto’s trail as he plots a daring heist in Rio de Janeiro. The movie is rife with awesome set pieces, like the foot chase across the rooves of Rio’s slums, and Johnson sticks around for the post-credits stinger that reveals Letty is still alive.

4 The Other Guys (78%)

Adam McKay’s The Other Guys is really Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s movie (and their first collaboration, in fact), but Dwayne Johnson’s role is integral, too. He and Samuel L. Jackson play the absurd hotshot detectives straight out of a generic Michael Bay action thriller to whom Ferrell and Wahlberg are “the other guys.”

Early on in the movie, they find themselves on top of a skyscraper after some bad guys have ziplined away and cut the wire. They make a snap decision to “aim for the bushes” and jump off the roof, falling to their deaths. It was a shocking, weird, and memorable way to kick off the movie.

3 Furious 7 (81%)

Part of the reason why Furious 7 is the best-reviewed entry in the franchise is that it has a special place in fans’ hearts, being Paul Walker’s final film before his tragic and untimely passing.

James Wan directed the film as both a high-octane action thriller filled with set pieces that are each more ludicrous than the last and a fitting tribute to one of the franchise’s oldest and most beloved stars, so on both counts, it honors Walker’s legacy. The actual plot sees Deckard Shaw, the brother of the previous movie’s primary villain, coming after Toretto’s crew for revenge.

2 Fighting with My Family (92%)

Stephen Merchant wrote and directed this lighthearted biopic of the WWE wrestler Paige, which was released earlier this year to surprise critical acclaim and a strong response from fans. Dwayne Johnson helped to produce the movie, having worked closely with Paige in her early career, and he also appeared in the film as himself.

Most of the time an actor plays themselves, it’s for comedic purposes – like the casts of Curb Your Enthusiasm and This is the End – but in this case, Johnson was simply reliving something that happened earlier in his life in a way that’s heartwarming and family-friendly moviegoing fun.

1 Moana (96%)

After a string of hits during Walt Disney’s personal reign and another such string in the so-called Disney Renaissance of the ‘90s, Walt Disney Animation Studios has been having its third wave of consecutive hits in recent years.

Both with traditional princess stories, like Frozen and Moana, and Pixar-esque world-building gems, like Zootopia and the Wreck-It Ralph films, Disney’s own animation arm is finally back on track. Dwayne Johnson lent his voice to Moana as the demigod Maui, who assists the title character in her quest, and he’s a large part of what makes this such a heartwarming, loveable, fun family adventure.

I watched this directly after Fast & 4ious and honestly it was one of the best choices I’ve made in my life. Also these movies are starting to get good so it’s harder to make fun of them.

This one picks up literally the very moment that the last movie left off: Brian is driving in with Mia and the gang to hijack the bus taking Dom to prison. I was in the middle of typing “I am so excited to see how they do this” when the bus swerved and then just started rolling down the street.

Obviously Dom or Letty must’ve been in charge of making their other schemes stealthy and graceful, because this was some clumsy shit. Enter PERD HAPLEY to say there are miraculously no fatalities. Do those buses even have seatbelts?? Also obviously Dom is missing after the crash because he’s run away to live his best life.

Apparently the gang splits up, because the next thing we see is Brian and Mia (who is FINALLY being styled like a Hot Girl) being almost shot by a bunch of people in Rio. They get saved by Vince, who now looks more like Frank from How to Get Away With Murder than Jamie Dornan. Vince has a girlfriend and a kid now, and from the way Mia looks at that kid she is very obviously pregnant.

Vince asks them for their help with a “straightforward” heist, and since Dom isn’t there to do it, they agree, kicking off an insanely badass stunt. Sincere sidenote, Justin Lin’s commitment to practical effects is probably the best thing to happen to this franchise, as one of the things I laughed out loud at in the first movie was how terrible the effects were.

They CUT A HOLE in the side of a train, pull cars out, then drop them off the back of a truck to drive away. It’s honestly very impressive, as unrealistic schemes go. Brian notices they’re seized property, which I don’t understand the significance of at the time, and somehow in there they figure out they’re going to be betrayed or something and they all start punching/shooting each other.

Brian leaps onto the truck, punches some more guys, crashes the truck into the train, and Dom gets away in the last of the cars. The guy they’re fighting also murdered a bunch of DEA agents. This all ends with Brian leaping off the truck onto Dom’s car before he hits a bridge, then they drive off the cliff like Beyonce and Lady Gaga and leap from the car into the beautiful water that is the same color as Paul Walker’s eyes. It’s so ridiculous that I literally laughed out loud.

Vince disappears, and then comes back, and then gets sent away for attempting to betray everyone? I think? The Rock finally shows up as some sort of cop who has the type of jurisdiction that allows him to just snap peoples’ necks, apparently. He’s trying to catch Dom and Brian, but the drug cartel who they were working with on the heist also want to catch/kill Dom and Brian. There’s a lot of gunfire (I mean A LOT) and all the main people escape unscathed but I can only assume about 100 henchmen are killed. The Rock’s partner is Elsa Pataky, who is troubled in some way based on the death of her husband I think? I’m extremely unclear on her character motivations, to be honest.

Dom wants to split up and run, still carrying the chip they stole out of the car that the drug cartel wants back. Mia tells them she’s pregnant (CALLED IT) and that she doesn’t want to lose her family, so they figure they’ll just steal all the drug cartel’s money and disappear to somewhere without extradition. Then they say the 5 words I’d been waiting for: “We’re gonna need a team.”

Since this is the Ocean’s Eleven of F&F movies, we bring in all the best & brightest from the previous films. Tyrese is retconned into being a charming fast-talker instead of a hot-tempered violent misogynist. Ludacris is basically a one-man CSI. Wonder Woman is back, which surprised me a little because I didn’t think she was all that interesting in the last movie and also she was working for the bad guy there. Han is back, being a cutie pie as usual.

Those two guys who helped hijack the gas tanker in the last movie are also back, exploding bathrooms and stuff (my notes literally just say “shitsplosion” with the wailing emoji.)

They go through all the standard heist-planning plot points. Surveillance, putting trackers on the cop cars so they can move without getting caught by The Rock (who was able to find them via facial recognition even though they had masks on, which is a stretch even for fictional law enforcement.) The drug lord moves all his money into a safe inside the police station.

One of the last things they need is a handprint from Reyes, the drug lord. Wonder Woman goes to the beach with Han and flirts with Reyes, and they PULL THE HANDPRINT OFF THE ASS OF HER BATHING SUIT. I’m going to pretend that this is a thing that’s possible because it’s just too funny.

It’s finally heist day, but uh oh, The Rock shows up to arrest everyone. I feel like this movie is like one of those nature specials where a polar bear is trying to eat a baby seal and I can’t decide who to root for.

Can’t Hobbs and Dom just get along? No[t yet]. Hobbs is finally a reasonable foe for Dom, who’s been beating people up in really easy fights for the last few movies. Eventually they get arrested and the whole gang gets carted off in armored SUVs (including Vince, who’d disappeared for most of the movie but was allowed to come back because, say it with me, he’s family).

The drug henchmen fire some sort of bazooka at the armored vehicles (honestly it’s weird that they care that much about getting the stolen chip back considering they’ve already moved all the money?) and a firefight even bigger than the one in the first part of the movie starts. As all the drug henchmen close in on Hobbs, the gang comes out of nowhere with a bunch of guns they must’ve stolen off of dead bodies and save his life. Poor Vince gets a bullet to the gut in the process and eventually dies.

Somehow, Hobbs is totally cool with them being like “We still need to complete our mission,” and even helps them by crashing through some police station walls in that armored truck. In a twist I didn’t see coming (though I later found out it’s in the trailer, which kinda sucks) they pull the entire safe out of the wall and drag it behind two cars for the final chase of the movie.

Now, I know that most of the stunts in these movies aren’t “plausible” by most definitions, but this one really takes the cake. They pull the safe behind them for SO LONG and for a lot of the time it’s not even throwing sparks. I also feel like speeding around a turn with the safe would mean that it would yank them backwards as it kept trying to go straight. Statistically there must also be a ton of civilian casualties.

In the end they use the safe to clobber basically everyone to death, Dom tries to play solo hero but Brian comes back to shoot Reyes (my notes say “of fucking course”) and save Dom’s life. Hobbs is like “You get a 24 hour head start but then it’s back to jail, and also you can’t have this money.” Well if they can’t have the money why the hell did you just help them steal it, HOBBS??

Double twist: they swapped the safe at some point so the gang DOES get the money. Dom gives a sack of cash to Vince’s lady, RIP Vince. Luda uses his loot to open his own garage so he can do what he loves (didn’t he already have his own garage? It’s unclear.) It’s very endearing. Dom, Brian and Mia escape to somewhere beachy and beautiful and Mia is pregnant AF. I’m normally very cynical about most tv/movie relationships but damn they’re cute together. Elsa Pataky is also there for some reason. I still don’t understand her deal.

(epilogue: TRIPLE TWIST- Eva Mendes shows up to bring Hobbs a file, and it’s got a picture of Letty in it. She’s FINALLY coming back from the dead!)

Unrelatedly, a thing I learned from this movie that I forgot about until right now is that drug dealers measure money by the pound? That’s can’t possibly be a real thing, can it?
