The Grammy and Emmy-winning director Bruce Gowers, who has died aged 82 of an acute respiratory infection, enjoyed huge success in American television through his work on high-profile awards shows including the Emmys, the MTV awards, the Academy of Country Music awards and the Comedy awards. He also directed nine series of American Idol: The Search for a Superstar, which brought him an Emmy award in 2009. He masterminded a string of TV specials for music legends including the Rolling Stones, Prince, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart, and oversaw coverage of President Bill Clinton’s inaugural concert at the Lincoln Memorial, which gathered artists from Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin to Tony Bennett, Bob Dylan and the rapper LL Cool J.
Another standout addition to his CV was Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration (2001), a record of two concerts at Madison Square Garden, New York, peppered with guest stars including Marlon Brando, Liza Minnelli, Ray Charles and Elizabeth Taylor. He won a Grammy for the Huey Lewis long-form video The Heart of Rock’n’Roll in 1986, and a Directors Guild of America award for his work on Genius: A Night for Ray Charles (2004).
But if there was a single event that seared Gowers’ name into the history books, it was his work on Queen’s video for Bohemian Rhapsody (1975). He had already worked with the band, having directed a video of their live performance at the Rainbow theatre, London, in 1974, and they then hired him to make the promo clip for Bohemian Rhapsody to avoid them having to mime it on the BBC’s Top of the Pops. Chunks of the six-minute film show Queen performing the song with their customary flamboyance, but what makes it unforgettable are the sequences where the band’s spectrally lit faces loom against a black background as they sing the song’s multi-layered harmonies. The video took a mere four hours to shoot at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire at a cost of £4,500, but it became recognised as the moment when the pop music video arrived as an invaluable promotional tool for pop musicians, paving the way for the launch of the MTV music channel in 1981.
“At that time it was a new world, the world of videos, and I didn’t think anyone was that into it for making money,” commented Gowers. “The video was just made for Top of the Pops and I don’t think any of us thought it would go beyond that – certainly not to be used live on stage for over 40 years.” In 2018, he claimed that he had been paid a mere $590 for his work on the project, though a proposed lawsuit to reclaim royalty arrears never materialised. The clip has now been viewed more than 1.5bn times on YouTube.
He was born in West Kilbride, to Robert, a teacher, and Violet. The family later moved to Enfield in north London, and Bruce attended the Latymer school in Edmonton. After a stint at the BBC Training College he entered the industry as a cable puller, cameraman and production manager. Subsequently he worked for Rediffusion and London Weekend Television in both directing and producing capacities, involved in programmes at different times with Kenny Everett and Stanley Baxter, before moving to the US in the late 1970s.
As the music video developed into an increasingly powerful dimension of the music industry, Gowers delivered some of its most memorable specimens. His clip for Prince’s 1999 captured the louche exoticism of Prince and his band, while for the Bee Gees’ How Deep Is Your Love he relied merely on some coloured lights and closeups of the artists’ faces. Gowers matched the sheer preposterousness of Rod Stewart’s Hot Legs with a video that resembles a parody of TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, while for Van Halen’s Dance the Night Away he exploited the band’s dynamic stage presence with a punchy live-perfomance video. For Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman he presented viewers with multiple Khans in a contrasting array of costumes.
He proved himself flexible enough to move between a variety of genres. Much in demand for comedy spectaculars for the HBO and Showtime networks, he worked with a string of the biggest names in the business including Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal and Eddie Murphy. He directed episodes of the showbiz magicians Penn & Teller’s Sin City Spectacular, and enjoyed much success with programming for children in the form of the Teen Choice awards and the Kids’ Choice awards. With his third wife, the writer and producer Carol Rosenstein, whom he first met on the video shoot for Rod Stewart’s Tonight’s the Night in 1976, he created the long-running Kidsongs franchise, which includes a TV show, DVDs and music CDs. Gowers and Rosenstein had been resident in Malibu for 23 years.
She survives him, along with his son, Sean, his stepdaughter, Katharine, and four grandchildren.

Queen Elizabeth || rode a motorcycle when she was 19. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) in February 1945. Part of the course involved her learning to ride a military bike, as pictured, which was likely either a BSA or Royal Enfield 250. She was the first queen to operate a motorcycle.

Londra, trasporti in sciopero anche nel mese di febbraio
Ormai è divenuto un appuntamento fisso comunicare gli scioperi mensili dei trasporti londinesi. Da più di un anno prosegue il braccio di ferro tra sindacati e governo. Proprio nel mese in cui il premier Sunak accoglie il presidente Zelensky e promette nuovi aiuti - economici e non - all’Ucraina, i lavoratori e i sindacati britannici chiedono interventi sull’inflazione sempre più crescente e sui salari sempre meno in linea con un costo della vita arrivato ai massimi storici.
Aflef (sindacato dei macchinisti), le ferrovie nazionali, Abellio e molti altri sono già in sciopero e il futuro non pare roseo. Infatti gli stessi sindacati, tra cui anche Rmt, sono al lavoro per indirne di nuovi durante i prossimi sei mesi. L’accordo tra le parti coinvolte è molto lontano e i cittadini di Londra dovranno pianificare i propri spostamenti con attenzione di volta in volta. State of NC Fast Charging: Winter 2021
It is that time of year where I look back on the growth of the open-charging network in North Carolina (this report does not cover brand exclusive infrastructure such as Rivian, Porsche, and Tesla). There are some changes this year, first and foremost, I am now an employee with ChargePoint Holdings, Inc. I do not have any insider knowledge regarding ChargePoint deployments in the state despite my employment with the company. All information relayed within is information gleaned from public sources or one-on-one conversations with the parties involved with the deployment.
With that said, what has changed since the Winter 2020 report? Let’s find out!
Greenlots
Last I reported, QwickCharge out of Atlanta bought these old Greenlots assets and intended to slap a credit card reader on them and get them back in operation. To date, nothing has happened at any of these locations:

The single longest stretch between chargers is Smithfield and Hope Mills. If a single charger were to be installed between these locations, I-95 would qualify for Alternative Fuel Corridor signage from the Federal Government.
I-95 needs to have billboard signage to promote these charging locations, this is a project I’ve been trying to engage Plug-in NC and The NC Clean Energy Technology Center into funding.
Interstate Highway Coverage: I-85
Interstate 85 now has 7 DC fast charging locations with 29 dispensers. Starting at the VA State Line:

Interstate 40 needs a lot of work! The 108-mile (106 if you go from Electrify America Asheville to Electrify America Statesville) stretch between Asheville and Statesville, and the stretch from Cary to Wallace need immediate attention. This corridor also has a lot of locations with a single charger, which is not sufficient for the number of EVs that Gov. Cooper is calling for (1.25M by 2030).

Was Samuel Packard a Huguenot?
One message on Josiah Smith Packard's gravestone seems to suggest this strongly. The gravestone reads is as follows, and reprinted on Find A Grave:
To commemorate the life of Josiah Smith Packard this stone was taken from land first broken from the wilderness at West Bridgewater, Massachusetts by Samuel Packard (Picard), Huguenot, who came to Massachusetts in 1638 and was the ancestor of the Packard family in America.
He had a son, Zacheus Packard, soldier of King Phillip's War;
He had a son, Jonathan Packard;
He had a son, Jacob Packard, soldier of the Revolution;
He had a son, Jonathan Packard;
He had a son, Ambrose Packard, soldier of the War of 1812, who married Elizabeth Bowen Smith;
They had a son, Josiah Smith Packard, born Enfield, Mass., 1833; lived at Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Boston, Mass.; Bayonne, N.J.; Providence, R.I.; Seekonk, Mass.; Died Baltimore, Md., 1911, whose last earthly resting place is marked by this stone.
Such a commemorative stone was placed in 1911 at the death of Josiah Smith Packard in Baltimore, and gives the whole genealogy from Samuel all the way to Josiah. The question remains: was Samuel Packard a Huguenot?
Note: This was originally posted on Apr. 13, 2018 on the main Packed with Packards WordPress blog (it can also be found on the Wayback Machine here). My research is still ongoing, so some conclusions in this piece may change in the future.
In my grandfather's family history, the Packard/Mills Family History, compiled in 1979, he writes that "it is said that the family name Packer may have been Piccard in French, and that the family may have been part of the Norman invasion of England." Dale Cook, on his Plymouth Colony Pages does not address this but that is because his recounting of Samuel Packard's ancestry starts in England with George Packard. Margaret Odrowaz Sypniewski, in her page on the Packard family, briefly addresses this. She writes about the possible connection between Packard and Picard:
The surname Packard is French. It means the descendant of Bacard...the name Packard appears in English records as early as the beginning of the fourteenth century. The name was well established in East Anglia long before Samuel's birth...in early Norman records I found Ralph, Engeram, Richard, Peter, Geoffrey, and Water Picard in Normandy from 1180-1196. Ten we find a Robert Pichard in England circa 1198; and John Pikert circa 1274. How and if these early Picard/Pikerts relate to later generations is not known.
Adding to this, Robert Glen Packard, a often quoted Packard descendant writes about how the surnames of "PACKARD, PICKARD AND PICARD are of Anglo-Norman origin and are generally believed to have been of common derivation" with some saying that Packard is a corruption of the French name "Picard," "Paccard" or "Pacard," noting that "Pickard" and "Picard" were first adopted as surnames by those from the French province of Picardy. At the same time, he notes that even if the "names Packard and Pickard were not synonymous, they were frequently confused and used interchangeably in ancient records." He adds that
Among the spellings in which these names are found in ancient English and early American records are Pichard, Pikard, Pikart, Pickart, Pyccarde, Pychard, Pacard, Paccard, Picard, Pickard, and Packard. Of these forms, the three last mentioned are those most frequently in evidence in modern times. One Picard, a Norman Knight who was living in the time of King Henry I of England, was early seated at Stradewi Castle and Scethrog, Brecknockshire, Wales. He aided in the conquest of Brecknockshire in 1092 and gave lands to Brecon Priory in 1115. He was the father of Roger Picard and the grandfather of John Picard, of Stradewi and Scethrog.
Add to this 1920 book titled History of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations arguing that "it is believed that the name was originally Picard. In the early Colonial records the name is written Packer and Pickard, but by the family has generally been written Packard." Ancestry.com's page on the meaning of the name claims that the name Packard is from Middle English, with the "Anglo-Norman French pejorative suffix -ard," and is a "pejorative derivative of the Middle English personal name Pack" along with coming from a "Norman personal name." Generally, the name itself means either to battle, brave, be hardy, or fight as one site puts it. Others say that the name "Pacard" is common in France. One book on the Normans refers the name Packard to "Picard (Lower)." From there is confirmed what Margaret Odrowaz Sypniewski wrote about the name as noted earlier, After all, the surname of Picard is strong in France. Another book on the romance of names adds that
We find also such irregular vowel changes as Flinders for Flanders, and conversely Packard for Picard. Pottinger (see below) sometimes becomes Pettinger as Portugal gives Pettingall. The general tendency is towards that thinning of the vowel that we get in mister for master and Miss Miggs's mim for ma'am. Littimer for Lattimeris an example of this. But in Royle for the local Ryle we find the same broadening which has given boil, a swelling, for earlier bile.
It seems evident that the name Pickard is French in origin. But is it interchangable or a corruption of Packard? That is not currently known.
The question still remains: was Samuel Packard a Huguenot? The definitions of "Huguenot" on varying websites seem to be a resounding no:
"The Huguenots were French Protestants most of whom eventually came to follow the teachings of John Calvin, and who, due to religious persecution, were forced to flee France to other countries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Some remained, practicing their Faith in secret..The Protestant Reformation began by Martin Luther in Germany about 1517, spread rapidly in France, especially among those having grievances against the established order of government. As Protestantism grew and developed in France it generally abandoned the Lutheran form, and took the shape of Calvinism.."- National Huguenot Society
"The Huguenots were French Protestants. The tide of the Reformation reached France early in the sixteenth century and was part of the religious and political fomentation of the times. It was quickly embraced by members of the nobility, by the intellectual elite, and by professionals in trades, medicine, and crafts"- The Hugenot Society of America
"Huguenot, any of the Protestants in France in the 16th and 17th centuries, many of whom suffered severe persecution for their faith. The origin of the name is uncertain, but it appears to have come from the word aignos, derived from the German Eidgenossen (confederates bound together by oath), which used to describe, between 1520 and 1524, the patriots of Geneva hostile to the duke of Savoy. The spelling Huguenot may have been influenced by the personal name Hugues, “Hugh”; a leader of the Geneva movement was one Besançon Hugues (d. 1532)."- Encyclopaedia Brittanica
Considering the roots of the Packard family in England, it would have been impossible for Samuel to be Huguenot. Perhaps someone married into the family that was a Huguenot, not he was not. Hence, this is an error on the commemorative stone for reasons that are not currently known. They may have meant he was of Norman descent but the stone did not say that, showing they were even confused about Samuel Packard's origins!
