BBNJ Treaty - The Race for Ratification.
The race for ratification of the BBNJ Treaty is the perfect example of how, by working together around the world, we can accelerate action to deliver the SDGs.
Side Event at the SDG Action Weekend organized by IUCN, Sierra Leone, European Union, Republic of Korea, Chile, Republic of Vanuatu, Birdlife International, Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente (AIDA), High Seas Alliance, EarthEcho, Greenpeace.
To maximize the 2023 SDG Summit's impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, United Nations entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.
The SDG Action Weekend will consist of the SDG Mobilization Day on Saturday, 16 September, and the SDG Acceleration Day on Sunday, 17 September at UNHQ in New York.
The SDG Action Weekend includes a select number of high-level side-events identified through an open call that concluded in August. They are jointly organized by coalitions of Member States, UN agencies and other international organizations, and global stakeholder networks.

Thought this was important to share. It's important to note that many of these species went extinct before this year--they were simply removed from the Endangered Species List in 2023. But because nothing can improve unless we believe that things can change, here are some things you can do to benefit local biodiversity:
Pollinators have been declining globally for the past several years--research local pollinator plants or native plants in general and join local restoration organizations (checking the websites of nearby open space parks/reserves and seeing if they have any volunteer days helpful)
Organize and implement your own native garden--it can be in a yard or a balcony if that is viable, or you can plant it at a local park/school in order to raise awareness. From experience, this takes a lot more work and logistics, but it's such a wonderful way to build community.
Participate in citizen science! Apps/websites like iNaturalist can help you document and contribute to scientific data, and local natural history/science museums sometimes offer citizen science programs as well.
If you live near the coast, research public comment opportunities for any MPAs (marine protected areas) and submit a comment! You can also email/call your local politicians about coastal and wetland restoration if you think they aren't making it a priority.
If the above seems daunting, join an organization, forum, or community! GenSea (a branch of EarthEcho International, a non-profit founded by the grandson of Jacques Cousteau) helped me a lot in my activism journey.
Spread the word. Through conversation, planting a garden, putting up posters. You can't do this alone, so try and get others engaged.
Finally, if you do something you love and intersect it with advocacy, that is when you achieve the most change. You don't have to call your reps or attend protests if that isn't you things. Tell stories; through writing, film, art, music, you name it. Do what you love--and learn to love the world around you because of it.

Xylem Watermark and EarthEcho International Lead the Clean Water Movement on World Water Monitoring Day, September 18th
In celebration of World Water Monitoring Day on September 18, Xylem Watermark is collaborating with environmental youth leadership organization EarthEcho International to host youth-led events nationwide that will help communities around the world be part of a clean water future for our planet.
As part of the EarthEcho Water Challenge, this year’s World Water Monitoring Day will include a special event in Renton, Washington, on September 18th, where local students will learn about water monitoring and how to improve water health for native salmon populations.  The Water Challenge, which runs annually from World Water Day through the end of the year, is comprised of three easy steps: Test water quality in communities; Share findings, data, stories and photos of quality testing; and Protect local water sources.
To kick-off events on World Monitoring Day, Xylem Watermark is partnering with EarthEcho’s Philippe Cousteau Jr., the Environmental Science Center, and the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association to host approximately eighty-five 4th grade students from Sartori Elementary School. Students will learn about the Cedar River, their local watersheds and how they can take action to protect these important waterways. Utilizing Xylem Watermark and EarthEcho’s water monitoring tools and resources, student attendees will test and record water quality and take part in hands-on activities focused on preserving salmon populations, stream health and environmental stewardship.  Volunteers from Xylem and industry partner Whitney Equipment Company, Inc will be present to lead educational activities with the participating students.
“The water we depend on every day is a precious resource that deserves our attention and protection,” said EarthEcho International Founder Philippe Cousteau, Jr. “We can’t afford to take our streams, rivers and watersheds for granted -- we can all play a role in conserving and improving the health of the natural water resources that feed our communities and the EarthEcho Water Challenge helps anyone be part of the solution.”
“Xylem Watermark is proud to continue Solving Water in communities through our partnership collaboration with EarthEcho. With the support of Xylem employees and stakeholders, educating the next generation, is core to our mission to provide and protect safe water resources for communities around the world and educate people about water issues,” says Jamie Saxe, Senior Director, Xylem Watermark Corporate Social Investment.  “Clean water and clean air makes for more fish and happier people,” says Jay Meena, President Whitney Equipment Company, Inc.
Learn more about the EarthEcho Water Challenge and how to Test, Share and Protect your waterways:
Test – It all begins by understanding the state of water quality in your community. Get started by purchasing a simple test kit at www.monitorwater.org;
Share – Participants can enter their data online through the EarthEcho Water Challenge  database and share their stories and photos on our website at www.monitorwater.org  or though social media using #MonitorWater; and
Protect – Armed with knowledge about local water resources, participants can use the information and tools available at www.monitorwater.org to protect local water resources every day.
The EarthEcho Water Challenge is made possible through the generous support of Xylem Watermark.
