While it’s been evident for quite some that the future of cable TV rests on shaky ground, we are now seeing clear signs of the disruption the introduction of streaming and shifting viewing habits has had on the industry. The challenges that lie ahead were laid bare in the recent standoff between Disney and Charter Communications that experts said risked unraveling the lucrative business of cable TV. The two sides eventually came to an agreement. Now, another TV company, Warner Bros. Discovery, is once again testing the limits of the business with the launch of CNN Max, which airs several hours of programming that CNN carries on its linear channel, running the risk of violating the contracts the network holds with distributors. This is yet another example of companies walking a fine line trying to maintain their lucrative cable contracts while also strongly positioning themselves for the future with streaming.

The Disney-Charter Deal

TV Companies Are Treading A Fine Line

Nielsen data also showed that for the first time in July, broadcast and cable TV combined made up for less than 50% of total viewership, a record low. Amid the inevitable reality of changing viewer habits and more Americans cutting the cord, TV companies must strike a delicate balance: develop their streaming platforms and garner more customers while maintaining the lucrative old cable TV contracts that have allowed them to fund their streaming ambitions.

Could the end of cable TV as we know it be coming down the pike? If the Disney/Spectrum dispute that later got resolved (which led to Freeform being dropped from Spectrum) is any indication, then it could be a reality within 10 years.

The world of sports media is about to get a massive new player. Disney, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery are planning to a launch a new streaming joint venture that will make all of their sports programming — including ESPN, Fox Sports and TNT — available under a single service, they announced Tuesday. The streaming service will launch in the fall and will be equally co-owned by each of the three companies. Subscribers will be offered a list of networks, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV and ESPN+. The service, not unlike a sports-only cable subscription, will also include hundreds of hours of NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and college sports content. The price of the mega-service remains to be announced. It will also be available to ESPN+, Hulu and Max subscribers as part of a bundle.

ESPN-Fox-TNT sports streaming service could turn cable television upside down

The ramifications of this initiative in both the sports and television world are enormous. Much of the modern cable television industry owes its existence to the allure of live sports, with those networks able to demand massive carriage fees in return. This new service will give the cable subscribers who pay only for sports a chance to cut the cord and lose very little, though we'll see how much this whole thing ends up costing. Between Disney, Fox and Warner Bros., the companies own at least some of the national media rights for all of the major sports leagues. MLB is mostly tied to Fox and ESPN. NBA games are nationally broadcasted on TNT and ABC/ESPN. The NHL has the same combination. Fox has a share of Big Ten football games. ESPN has the SEC. Fox and ESPN both have a share of the NFL.

CBS, which has NFL Sunday afternoon games and March Madness, and NBC, which has the NFL's "Sunday Night Football" and the Olympics, are the major networks left out here, but cable cutters could still access their biggest games through over-the-air antennas.

Does anybody know if the 1st round rangers games on espn are the msg broadcast or the espn announcers? We get espn on tv but I use streams for msg games because it's not in our cable package anymore

Fuck espn!

I can't watch live nhl playoff games unless I pay for a cable or satellite package that includes espn. Even though I paid them money directly to have espn+ streaming and have been very happy without any cable package for over a decade.

Then I have to deal with an insane 48 hour delay for location based blackouts. Again, even though I'm paying money to have a streaming service to watch the games.

And it only keeps old games available to be selected to watch for less than a week, sometimes if there are a lot of games it's more like three or four days is all before an older game is gone. Which means I have a game I want to stream available for sometimes only one or two days. In a world of streaming, two months would seem ridiculously short, and under the previous nhl streaming package, I could watch any game from the current season at any time.

Also gone are the extended highlights packages that were a part of the nhl streaming package in past years. These were the highlights of the game condensed down to about 10 to 15 minutes and were absolutely great to catch up with things going on around the entire league. Much better than the espn highlight show which seems to have been received so poorly that I don't think they're even making them anymore, they are certainly not in the streaming menu like they used to be.

But the absolute most horrible and annoying total piece of shit is spoilers. I understand if I watch a game the concept that I might possibly not want to know the results and scores of other games that happened at the same time is so far beyond the ability of espn to comprehend that I just accept they will give spoilers for other games and I'm forced to decide which game each day I don't want to have spoiled to watch that one first.

But here is the streaming menu on espn+ that I have to use to select and watch any game. You'll notice I covered up descriptions and part of the screenshots of the "related videos". I did that because those highlight descriptions give away the game results.

I have the app/channel on my roku set to not show game results, though I have no idea what that does because they absolutely insist on displaying game results that there is no way for me to avoid having displayed on my screen while selecting a game to watch!

And all of this is before even addressing the quality of the coverage and especially the announcers. It's a noticeable step down from most local broadcasts and even worse compared to Canadian coverage or even the old nbc coverage.

NHL and especially espn, this is badly not working for me and as the world continues to move more and more to streaming and away from traditional cable services the amount of your TV audience having these same exact frustrations and issues will only increase until you fix them or people give up on watching the league, at least through legal routes.
