Sunday, June 5, 2022 | Swansea, Wales | 10:32 p.m.
We started the day with a trip to the Dylan Thomas Birthplace, the house where he was born and lived until he was in his 20s. He produced 2/3 of his published works there, and many of his poems and stories are grounded in the landscape and community where he grew up. His house is recreated inside to look like it did when he lived there, but it is a living house that hosts events and people can even rent it out as a bed and breakfast. All the furniture and decorations are either from the period or replicas, and visitors are allowed to touch and explore everything. I even wrote a poem (which I posted earlier) sitting at the vanity in the guest room!

At the house, we had a workshop on the Welsh poetry form cynghanedd, which incorporates lots of alliteration and assonance in specific combinations.
We had a delicious Welsh lunch buffet at the house made with all local ingredients. A taste of Wales for sure!
We drove to two scenic spots, Arthur’s Stone (not where King Arthur pulled the sword from, just a local name) and Rhossili Bay. Arthur’s Stone is a monolith, a human-made stone structure made during the Neolithic age. Stonehenge is the most famous example of a monolith. There are many theories about why they were made: rituals, structure for burial mounds, place markers for nomadic tribes. Pam’s favorite theory is that they acted as picture frames, outlining beautiful or meaningful parts of the landscape.
Tumblr media
Today was our first day with rainy weather but I actually loved it. It was very atmospheric. Rhossili Bay looked exactly like how I had pictured Wales before coming here: foggy air, craggy cliffs, green hills, grey ocean. It looked, in fact, just like the beach in my first post!

After some rest time in our hotel, we went to a reading by our two program directors, Pam Petro (my professor from Smith!) and Dominic Williams. Pam’s writing always makes me want to cry in the best way, and it was so exciting to get to know Dom’s writing after knowing him.
We had dinner at the same pub as last night and I ordered two (TWO!!) drinks that were both very delicious, a raspberry Bellini and a mojito. At dinner I sat at a table with Mary, our bus driver who is from Wales near our university. It was a very interesting way to learn more about life and culture here, she had a lot to say.
One thing I keep forgetting to mention about Wales is that absolutely no one wears a mask here, and neither do we in my program. Sometimes it feels weird and I’m hyper-conscious of my breathing and facial expressions, but sometimes it feels nice and free and normal. Cases are low here and we’re seldom anywhere crowded. It feels almost as if we’ve traveled backward (or maybe, hopefully, forward) to a time without a pandemic. It made me a little anxious at first but now I know I’ll miss it. Even without masks, I feel much safer here than in the US.
And another random tidbit, we have seen the CUTEST dogs here. It’s as if the Welsh have the best taste in dogs in the world. Lots of poodle mixes, spaniels, and mixed breed, soft, mid-size dogs with beautiful spots and speckles and soft ears. Each one cuter than the next! We even spied a litter of adorable border collie puppies in someone’s yard a few days ago!!

Jurassic Park revisited: How Steven Spielberg helped save Carmarthenshire cinema from closure | UK News
Tumblr media
It's 30 years since Hollywood director Steven Spielberg helped save a "diamond in the desert" cinema from closure.Jurassic Park had its UK premier on 16 July 1993, a joint premier with screenings in London and at a small cinema in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. Elizabeth Evans, the leader of a youth theatre in Carmarthen, had launched a campaign to save the Lyric cinema from closure and had secured a screening of the film. The distribution company later reportedly went back on their word so the the mayor of Carmarthen at the time, Richard Goodridge, stepped in to help with a fax to the film's director, Steven Spielberg.
Tumblr media
Image: Elizabeth Evans and Richard Goodridge pictured in a newspaper article about the Lyric cinema screening of Jurassic Park "I happened to be in the right place at the right time and I contacted Steven Spielberg through my office in the town and asked if something could be done and as the news will tell you, it was a success that, through his office or through his secretary, they allowed a copy of the film to be shown," Mr Goodridge told Sky News. "And I suspect because of the adverse publicity that was going to be given to the distribution company that they probably thought it would be best to allow them to show it on the opening night, the same time as it was in Leicester Square." It was only recently Mr Goodridge found out that the Lyric had in fact been the first cinema in the UK to screen the film after Ms Evans put the clocks forward by around 10 minutes.Mr Goodridge said the Lyric - now a theatre - had become a facility for "so many youngsters, under-privileged youngsters, that were looking for an outlet for their talents". "It's been a huge success for thousands of youngsters that have come through that theatre for the last 30 years and they've gone on to great things," he said."Some have become very well-known actors and actresses and that type of thing, and without Steven Spielberg's contribution none of that would have happened."

Image: A letter to Steven Spielberg from Richard Goodridge dated 30 June, 1993 According to Mr Goodridge, credit must go to Ms Evans and her husband David who spent many years working hard to secure the future of the Lyric."Although it was a brief spell for me of 12 months in that role and I was able to contribute to the saving of the building, credit must be given to both Liz and Dave who spent a lifetime, not just a year as I did," he said.

Image: Spielberg at the premier of Jurassic Park in 1993 "So a great many people owe their careers and their fortunes to Liz and Dave, and I'd like to think that as time goes on, while I had a contribution, it is to their memory that the success of this event should be drawn to."Read more from Sky News: Wales lacks 'coherent brand' to attract overseas visitors 'Dumbfounded' Johnny Depp visits Dylan Thomas' birthplace To celebrate the anniversary, a special screening of Jurassic Park will take place at the Lyric on Sunday afternoon, followed by three screenings of Save The Cinema over three consecutive nights. ( DYLAN O'BRIEN. HE/HIM. CIS-MALE ) Did I just see ( THOMAS MILLER )? This ( TWENTY FOUR ) year old ( BARISTA ) has been living in Chicago for ( 2 YEARS ). Some say that they are ( AFFABLE & KINDHEARTED ) as well as ( STUBBORN & JITTERY ). If they had a theme song, some might say that it would be ( KEEP YOUR HEAD UP BY BEN HOWARD ). All I know is that I can’t wait to see what they bring to the Windy City.
hello! i’m lauren and this is my boy thomas. he’s a recycled muse but basically he’s a good boy and loves everyone, so please feel free to message me to plot! i look forward to writing with you all.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‎
INFO:
full name: Thomas George Miller nickname(s): Tom, Tommy birthday: 3rd June 1996 age: 24 zodiac sign: Gemini gender & pronouns: Cis-male, he/him sexuality: Bisexual physical: 5′10, brown hair, brown eyes birthplace: Ireland occupation: Barista
‏‏‎ ‎
PAST:
(tw: alcoholism, verbal abuse, depression, anxiety)
Thomas was born in Sligo, Ireland to parents Conor and Mary, and was the first of two children. His younger sister was born 4 years after him, and he had a good relationship with all of his family. He excelled in school and loved to read and go out exploring, always curious about the world around him. His childhood was very normal, but his world was turned upside down when his father's personality began to change. His father lost his job when Thomas was 7 and he turned to drinking, becoming verbally abusive towards his mother and himself, turning their once peaceful home into a living hell. Thomas couldn't speak without setting his father off, and was constantly berated and belittled by him, slowly chipping away at his self-confidence over time. He was 14 years old when his father finally left. He developed depression and anxiety due to the years of constant verbal abuse, and lost himself completely. He no longer found pleasure in the things he'd once enjoyed, and he became withdrawn and timid. Struggling to cope with the situation, Thomas started going to therapy to try and build back his self-esteem. It was here that he discovered his love for music. He picked up a guitar one day and fell in love with playing, finding comfort in the ability to completely lose himself in the sound for a little while. He then began to write his own songs which helped him to express his feelings and turn them into something positive that may help other people. When he was 17 he and his mother and sister relocated to Philadelphia to be closer to family and get a fresh start after his father decided to come back onto the scene and cause problems again. The move was essentially the three of them running away to escape the volatile situation. Thomas immediately got a part-time job to help out and they settled into life in America, glad to finally be free and safe.
He decided to go to college to study music, and there he learned drums and piano alongside honing his guitar skills, and continued to write his own music. But, the relocation to Philadelphia wasn’t quite enough for him. He wanted to explore the world, and so he went travelling after graduation, and eventually found himself in Chicago. As soon as he set foot in the city, he fell in love with it, and a few months later he had found a small apartment and was packing up his things to make the move to the windy city.
‏‏‎ ‎
PRESENT:
Thomas moved to Chicago 2 years ago, finding a small apartment and a part-time job as a barista in a local coffee shop. At first he struggled with being in a new city, but once he finally realised that he was safe and finally had the freedom to be himself, his confidence started to return to him and things started to look up. He still struggles with his depression and anxiety from time to time, but he does his best to keep a positive mindset, and surrounds himself with people who support him and remind him what he's really worth. He still goes back to Philadelphia to visit his mother and sister, and takes trips back to Ireland every so often to see his old friends, but he has never looked back after making the move to Chicago. He plays at as many open mic nights as he can in bars across the city, wanting to share his music with the world and one day make it his full time career.
‏‏‎ ‎
PERSONALITY:
Thomas can be very blunt and stubborn and won’t sugar coat anything, always speaking his mind no matter who he’s talking to. If he sees someone doing something that he thinks is unjust, he will call them out for it with no hesitation. He will always stand up for what he thinks is right and this can cause him to get on people’s bad side sometimes, but that doesn’t phase him. Because of his past experiences he always does his best to have a positive outlook on life no matter how tough things get. He is affable and kind-hearted and always does his best to pick others up when they’re down. Thomas is intelligent, witty and sarcastic and strives to bring laughter to those around him. He is loyal and very protective over the people he cares about.

Jill’s timeline of Dean, 1936-1979. She said something about working on an 80s timeline too but I didn’t find it:
Robert Dean Stockwell was born on March 5, 1936, at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles.
His father was Harry Baylis Stockwell, age 30, an 'artist' employed by motion picture studios. His original birthplace was Missouri. His mother was Elizabeth Margaret Veronica, age 24, a 'housekeeper' employed at home. Her original birthplace was New York. This was her second child. [Me: Jill somehow got his birth certificate. I guess this was in the days before they got a lot more secure about who got birth certificates?? Either way, it’s not really something I approve of because that’s applying genealogical methods to a living person, which genealogists generally frown on doing.]
1953 - 1956: The mystery years. Jill: “Dean left college in the spring of 1953, and disappeared for awhile until he showed up doing live television in 1956. When interviewers asked him what he had been doing, he spun quite a fanciful tale. There is no way for any of us to know how much is true, and how much he was making up. According to him, he changed his name several times, and began an odyssey of traveling across country doing odd jobs and living with the laborers of the land (Woody Guthrie, anyone? Bob Dylan also made up his own past when he hit New York. Must have seemed quite romantic at the time). “Dean says that he worked in the mailroom of a large company in New York....but when people began to figure out who he was, he hit the road. Worked on the railroad in Texas....in Mexico.....worked as a fruit picker.....worked in a bakery in New Orleans.....eventually ended up in New York again, and decided to try acting once more.
Jill: “Here are a few facts I've been able to find: Dean attended the University of California in Berkeley from 1952 to the spring of 1953, when he dropped out. His brother Guy was attending the university at the same time, and when Guy graduated (probably 1954), he became a schoolteacher in northern California. A former pupil of Guy's recalls Dean coming into the classroom occasionally to read Shakespeare to them (how cool would that be?). Also, Dean himself has stated that he was in 'northern California' when James Dean was killed in an automobile accident (which was the fall of 1955).
“Because of these few facts, I get the feeling that Dean was with Guy during a lot of these 'lost years.'
“However, he definitely was in New York during 1956, as that is where the live TV shows were originating from that he appeared in. He attended a few classes at the Actor's Studio, which is where he met Suzanne Pleschette. Since she is a real person, I will take that fact at face value.
“The rest is a mystery.” [K: I think there’s some truth to Dean’s claims- he was in NYC during the summer of 1955 and acted in a religious show, The Wise in Heart, to get money to go back to LA, according to Nature Boy. Nature Boy’s author confirmed this was pulled from a magazine interview with Stockwell. So, between the summer of 1955 and up to fall/winter 1955 at the earliest, spring 1956 at the latest, he was with his brother in Northern California, working as a logger, before going back to LA. Between spring of 1953 and the summer of 1955? I’m sure he found work elsewhere, was recognized there, moved, changed jobs, and that’s why he went through so many, but he may have exaggerated as well. After moving to LA, Dean soon met Berman. They had certainly met well before 1957- Dean wrote a poem that mentioned Berman’s son Tosh blowing out the candles on his 21st birthday cake.]
1957: A new adult Dean Stockwell emerges. Sometimes Dean says he went back to Hollywood in 1956, but another time he stated he returned to Hollywood on his 21st birthday, in order to collect the money that had been held in trust for him (it wasn't very much.......I'm thinking around $25,000, but I'd have to look that up). Dean turned 21 on March 5, 1957.
This is the period when Roddy McDowall took that photo of Dean's that shows up on the mantel in the QL show "M.I.A." [Me: Dean doesn’t look that young in the picture, based on his hair. I’m thinking the picture that’s in Roddy’s art book was taken around this time, while the MIA picture was taken in the early 1960s.]
There is so much happening between 1956 and 1957, that I have a feeling he was traveling between New York and Hollywood, rather than staying put in one place. He makes his first film as an adult, a western, titled "Gun for a Coward." "The Careless Years" will follow that one, plus countless appearances on TV dramas, plus a run in a Broadway play "Compulsion" with Roddy McDowall from late 1957 to early 1958 (while rehearsing for Compulsion, he appears in live TV dramas from New York........he was busy!).
Also, in 1957, he began to hang out with the beatniks living in Topanga Canyon, above Los Angeles. His address is listed as an apartment building in Hollywood (there's a photo of that building in our Files section), but he eventually buys his own home up in the canyon (I have no idea what year).
Dean states in the recent Neil Young biography that he spent a lot of time with the artist Wallace Berman and his family, and that Berman's revolutionary way of thinking was a profound influence on him. Berman was an avant-garde artist who worked with collages and symbols, often incorporating Hebrew letters (having to do with the Kabbala). When Berman's art exhibition was closed down due to obscenity, it was Dean Stockwell who bailed him out of jail (this was still 1957).
1957 - 1959: This is the period of time that Dean is hanging out at Jazz clubs, and is referred to as a Hollywood Hipster (with the likes of another child star, Bobby Driscoll), when he's not being compared to the late James Dean. He shows up in a documentary about the 'Beats' in California (a film I would love to get my hands on. :-) It's also the time when Dean's name is being connected to quite a few Hollywood starlets (Janice Rule, Diane Varsi, Ina Balin, Suzanne Pleschette, Sandra Dee).
1959 - 1962: At this point, almost every interview/article about Dean Stockwell centers on his relationship with another quirky personality, Millie Perkins. They were young, they were different from the mainstream, they were 'hip' without being obnoxious, and they made a cute couple. It's difficult for me to even figure out what else Dean was doing at the time, because everything centers around his marriage to Millie (1960 - 1962), and their efforts to hide from the press. They are married shortly after he finished "Sons and Lovers" and are going through a divorce by the time of "Long Day's Journey Into Night."
A brief glimpse into Dean's character is provided by Katherine Hepburn, during the filming of Long Day's Journey - he showed up for filming on the first day, an outdoor scene, without a coat during cold weather. That bothered Kate so much, she went out and bought him a coat, and had it there for him the following day. The director stated that Kate Hepburn had a soft spot for heavy drinkers. Apparently Dean arrived for work with a bottle of vodka close at hand. Sounds like he was getting a bit of a reputation.
1963: This is when Dean runs into Dennis Hopper again (they first met in New York in 1957, through their mutual friend Roddy McDowall). They become lifelong friends. Dean is mentioned in 'Andy Warhol's Diary' as being one of the guests at a party at Hopper's house, with Russ Tamblyn and Suzanne Pleschette. [Me: According to Semina Culture, this is also around the time when Dean met his longtime girlfriend Toni Basil.]
A photo of Dean from these days was taken by Dennis Hopper, and can be found in our Files, as well as in the Photo Album on our Website. [Me: That picture- with the egg on Dean’s face- was taken in 1965.]
1965 - Makes frequent appearances as a continuing character on the TV series "Dr. Kildare." Stars in a black and white film shot in France, titled "Rapture."
1966 - creates a short art film titled "Moonstone" with his artist friend George Herms
1966 and 1967 - in a sense, we can call these 2 years as 'lost years' or 'mystery years' also. Only called that because Dean's life at the time cannot be discerned by movies or TV appearances. Instead, we find Dean creating collages for Art Showings, living in Haight-Ashbury (verified by the beatnik poet Charles Plymell, who became a friend of his at the time), and perhaps sojourning in London for awhile. While in Haight-Ashbury, he attends parties at Plymell's apartment with the likes of Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg. [Me: There was Mr. Paracelsus, Who Are You? early around this time, but after that, nothing until late 1967.]
1968 - appeared in the psychedelic hippie movie "Psych-Out"; according to sources, the only actor in the film who actually lived in the Haight district at the time. But not for long, because now he's reappearing in Topanga Canyon with Russ Tamblyn, and eating breakfast at the local restaurant there. He befriends the female owner, who introduces him to her new boyfriend - Neil Young.
Also starred in a British TV mystery drama (which puts him in London, if only briefly). [Me: This was Thirty-Minute Theatre: Before Breakfast.]
Also made appearances on The Danny Thomas Show, and FBI.
Finishes the decade by performing (most charmingly) in a Bonanza episode....... and writing a screenplay titled "After the Gold Rush." Introduces George Herms to the music of Neil Young during an acid trip.
1970 to 1973 = Dean continues to make short art films with his friend George Herms. Also makes a short documentary about the making of "Breakaway," which was an art film created by the artist Bruce Connor, starring Dean's girlfriend at the time, Toni Basil.
1970 = stars in the film "Dunwich Horror" with his friend from the 1950's, Sandra Dee. Asks George Herms to paint the hieroglyphics on his torso for a scene in the film.
1971 = Joins his friend Dennis Hopper and other "Misfits of Hollywood" in Peru for the making of Hopper's film "The Last Movie." LIFE Magazine does a cover story about Hopper down in Peru, and stories circulate about the wild times on the set. Hopper spends a year editing the film, but Universal refuses to distribute it. The title of the film is almost prophetic regarding Hopper's career. [Me: His stepmother Nina Olivette passes away this year.]
Also in 1971, Dean stars in two television movies - "Paper Man" and "The Failing of Raymond."
1972 = stars in a low-budget biker-on-the-road flick titled "The Loners." The press release for the film states that Dean Stockwell has 'been living in England.'
1973 = Stars in "The Werewolf of Washington." Dean later says that the script was funny, but he knew by the very first day on the set that he was in a stinker.
1974 = Appears in a play in Albuquerque called "Relatively Speaking," and tells an interviewer from the local paper that he is tired of being typecast as a murderous lunatic who guest stars on television dramas. He would like to try comedy. [Me: There’s a 1972 newspaper article about Win Place or Steal that says he’d love to do more comedy, but I think his first comedic role as an adult was in his 1964 episode of Burke’s Law.]
Also around this time he is showing up in Taos quite a bit, getting drunk and stoned in bars with Dennis Hopper. But even though he was getting quite a reputation in Taos (and not a good one - Dean quotes, with good humor, a person saying "I always thought Dennis Hopper was the biggest asshole in Taos - until I met the other guy....,"), that isn't his entire existence. He is also still living in Topanga Canyon above Los Angeles, and the magazine "Fighting Stars" does a cover story on Dean about his newfound interest, Stickfighting.
Dean comes across in the interview as an eager, enthusiastic man, younger than his stated age (the photos that accompany the article look like a man in his 20's instead of a man approaching 40), who has discovered the martial art Stickfighting after appearing in a low-budget film in the Phillipines. He is so involved with this sport that he brings his instructor over from the Phillipines, Remy Presas, to stay at his house. He also tells the interviewer that he really doesn't care if he never acts again, as long as he can be involved in this martial art.
At the same time, though, Dean is happy to give his blessing to an official Fan Club, started by a woman named Geordie James (whom our member Claire was corresponding with at the time). Dean even telephoned Ms. James when he returned from the Phillipines, and he sounded just as eager and enthusiastic over the phone as he comes across in the magazine interview. Alas, there was a fire at the home of Ms. James, and the Fan Club never got off the ground.
1975 = stars in another low-budget film, this time a comedy, titled "Win, Place or Steal," with his friend and Topanga Canyon neighbor Russ Tamblyn. [Me: This was filmed around 1972.]
Also in 1975, spends a fastpaced summer with his friend David Bowie, who was living in Hollywood at the time. Bowie recalls making the club scene with Dean and Dennis; Iggy Pop remembers them visiting him in the mental hospital.
1976 = Does the photography/artwork for the cover of Neil Young's album "American Stars 'N Bars" (9 years earlier, Dean had contributed a photo of the artist Wallace Berman for the cover of the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" album).
Also, in 1976, Dean and his girlfriend Toni Basil accompanied Dennis Hopper to the Cannes Film Festival for a showing of the independent film "Tracks," which both Dean and Dennis had appeared in. According to the gossip columns, there were parties on the beach from dusk to dawn, and it was here that Dean meets his future wife, Joy Marchenko. They begin a 5 year correspondence.
1977 to 1978 = Toni is very active in the punk rock scene, and the artist Bruce Conner makes a documentary about punk rock clubs in California, with her in it. Toni introduces Dean to the band Devo. Dean makes a tape of their music and gives it to Neil Young. Then Dean takes Neil to a club to see them.
1978 = Probably the beginning of the breakup with Toni, as she begins an affair with Devo's bass player. Dean moves in with Russ Tamblyn, still up in Topanga Canyon. During a frisbee game with Russ and Neil, the idea for "Human Highway" takes shape. Joined by Dennis Hopper and Devo, they begin filming a movie which will ultimately take 5 years to complete, and will end up being completely different than the original conception.
Stories circulate about the wild times on the set, which began as simple outdoor shots filmed around Taos, New Mexico, but which will end up being a very expensive studio set created by Neil Young's imagination.
1979 = Dean appears in Las Vegas doing comedy dinner theater ("Come Blow Your Horn"). Also directs an avant-garde play in Los Angeles called "Man With Bags," starring Russ Tamblyn (this is where our member Claire gets to meet him). A few weeks later she gets to meet him again at an art exhibition of George Herms' work, which includes a showing of Dean's film creation "Moonstone." A good time was had by all.

Oliver Grayland
Full Name: Oliver Thomas Grayland
Pronunciation: AHL-i-vər TAHM-əs
Nickname/Alias: Olly{by mother and sisters}, Otter{by close friends}, Bossby most of his staff}
Meaning: From Olivier, a Norman French form of a Germanic name such as ALFHER or an Old Norse name such as Áleifr (see OLAF). The spelling was altered by association with Latin oliva "olive tree". In the Middle Ages the name became well-known in Western Europe because of the French epic 'La Chanson de Roland', in which Olivier was a friend and advisor of the hero Roland.
In England Oliver was a common medieval name, however it became rare after the 17th century because of the military commander Oliver Cromwell, who ruled the country following the civil war. The name was revived in the 19th century, perhaps in part due to the title character in Charles Dickens' novel 'Oliver Twist' (1838), which was about a poor orphan living on the streets of London.

Ma Rainey
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Ma" Rainey (born Gertrude Malissa Nix Pridgett, September 1882 or April 26, 1886 – December 22, 1939) was one of the earliest African American professional blues singers and one of the first generation of blues singers to record. She was billed as the Mother of the Blues.
She began performing as a young teenager and became known as Ma Rainey after her marriage to Will Rainey, in 1904. They toured with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and later formed their own group, Rainey and Rainey, Assassinators of the Blues. Her first recording was made in 1923. In the next five years, she made over 100 recordings, including "Bo-Weevil Blues" (1923), "Moonshine Blues" (1923), "See See Rider Blues" (1924), "Black Bottom" (1927), and "Soon This Morning" (1927).
Rainey was known for her powerful vocal abilities, energetic disposition, majestic phrasing, and a "moaning" style of singing. Her powerful voice was never adequately captured on her records, because she recorded exclusively for Paramount, which was known for its below-average recording techniques and poor shellac quality. However, her other qualities are present and most evident in her early recordings "Bo-Weevil Blues" and "Moonshine Blues".
Rainey recorded with Louis Armstrong, and she toured and recorded with the Georgia Jazz Band. She continued to tour until 1935, when she retired and went to live in her hometown.
Life and career
Gertrude Pridgett claimed to have been born on April 26, 1886 (beginning with the 1910 census, taken April 25, 1910), in Columbus, Georgia. However, the 1900 census indicates she was born in September 1882 in Alabama, and researchers Bob Eagle and Eric LeBlanc suggest her birthplace as being in Russell County. She was the second of five children of Thomas and Ella (née Allen) Pridgett, from Alabama. She had at least two brothers and a sister, Malissa, with whom Gertrude was later confused by some writers.
She began her career as a performer at a talent show in Columbus, Georgia, when she was about 12 to 14 years old. A member of the First African Baptist Church, she began performing in black minstrel shows. She later claimed that she was first exposed to blues music around 1902. She formed the Alabama Fun Makers Company with her husband, Will Rainey, but in 1906 they both joined Pat Chappelle's much larger and more popular Rabbit's Foot Company, in which they were billed together as "Black Face Song and Dance Comedians, Jubilee Singers [and] Cake Walkers". In 1910, she was described as "Mrs. Gertrude Rainey, our coon shouter". She continued with the Rabbit's Foot Company after it was taken over by a new owner, F. S. Wolcott, in 1912.
Beginning in 1914, the Raineys were billed as Rainey and Rainey, Assassinators of the Blues. Wintering in New Orleans, she met numerous musicians, including Joe "King" Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Pops Foster. As the popularity of blues music increased, she became well known. Around this time, she met Bessie Smith, a young blues singer who was also making a name for herself. A story later developed that Rainey kidnapped Smith, forced her join the Rabbit's Foot Minstrels, and taught her to sing the blues; the story was disputed by Smith's sister-in-law Maud Smith.
From the late 1910s, there was an increasing demand for recordings by black musicians. In 1920, Mamie Smith was the first black woman to be recorded. In 1923, Rainey was discovered by Paramount Records producer J. Mayo Williams. She signed a recording contract with Paramount, and in December she made her first eight recordings in Chicago, including "Bad Luck Blues", "Bo-Weevil Blues" and "Moonshine Blues". She made more than 100 other recordings over the next five years, which brought her fame beyond the South. Paramount marketed her extensively, calling her the "Mother of the Blues", the "Songbird of the South", the "Gold-Neck Woman of the Blues" and the "Paramount Wildcat".
In 1924 she made some recordings with Louis Armstrong, including "Jelly Bean Blues", "Countin' the Blues" and "See, See Rider". In the same year she embarked on a tour of the Theater Owners Booking Association (TOBA) in the South and Midwest of the United States, singing for black and white audiences. She was accompanied by the bandleader and pianist Thomas Dorsey and the band he assembled, the Wildcats Jazz Band. They began their tour with an appearance in Chicago in April 1924 and continued, on and off, until 1928. Dorsey left the group in 1926 because of ill health and was replaced as pianist by Lillian Hardaway Henderson, the wife of Rainey's cornetist Fuller Henderson, who became the band's leader.
Some of Rainey's lyrics contain references to lesbianism or bisexuality, such as the 1928 song "Prove It on Me":
They said I do it, ain't nobody caught me. Sure got to prove it on me. Went out last night with a crowd of my friends. They must've been women, cause I don't like no men.
According to the website queerculturalcenter.org, the lyrics refer to an incident in 1925 in which Rainey was "arrested for taking part in an orgy at [her] home involving women in her chorus." "Prove It on Me" further alludes to presumed lesbian behavior: "It's true I wear a collar and a tie... Talk to the gals just like any old man."
The political activist and scholar Angela Y. Davis noted that "'Prove It on Me' is a cultural precursor to the lesbian cultural movement of the 1970s, which began to crystallize around the performance and recording of lesbian-affirming songs." Towards the end of the 1920s, live vaudeville went into decline, being replaced by radio and recordings. Rainey's career was not immediately affected; she continued recording for Paramount and earned enough money from touring to buy a bus with her name on it. In 1928, she worked with Dorsey again and recorded 20 songs, before Paramount terminated her contract. Her style of blues was no longer considered fashionable by the label.
Death
In 1935, Rainey returned to her hometown, Columbus, Georgia, where she ran three theatres, the Lyric the Airdrome, and The Liberty Theatre until her death. She died of a heart attack in 1939, at the age of 53, in Rome, Georgia.
Legacy
Rainey was inducted into the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
Bob Dylan referred to Rainey in the song "Tombstone Blues" on his 1965 album Highway 61 Revisited, pairing her with Beethoven, perhaps as symbols of great art, a compliment to Rainey's stature as an artist ("where Ma Rainey and Beethoven once unwrapped their bedroll").
In 1981 Sandra Lieb wrote the first full-length book about Rainey, Mother of the Blues: A Study of Ma Rainey.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, a 1982 play by August Wilson, is a fictionalized account of the recording of her song of the same title in December 1927.
Sterling A. Brown wrote a poem, "Ma Rainey", in 1932, about how "When Ma Rainey / comes to town" people everywhere would hear her sing.
In 1994, the U.S. Post Office issued a 29-cent commemorative postage stamp honoring her.
In 2004, "See See Rider Blues" (written in 1925) was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was added to the National Recording Registry by the National Recording Preservation Board of the Library of Congress.
Academy Award winner Mo'Nique played Rainey in the 2015 film Bessie.
The first annual Ma Rainey Blues Festival will be held in April 2016 in Columbus, Georgia, near the home that Rainey owned and lived in at the time of her death.
Recordings
This sortable table presents all 94 titles recorded by Rainey.
The recording dates are approximate.
The classification by Sandra Lieb is almost entirely by form. Blues songs which are only partly of twelve-bar structure are classified as mixtures of blues and popular song forms. Blues songs without any twelve-bar or eight-bar structure are classified as non-blues.
The JSP and DOCD columns refer to the two complete CD reissues.

Nancy Thomas
I wrote this poem about Dylan Thomas’s sister Nancy, who was older than him by 8 years. Not much is known about her but evidence suggests she may have been unhappy in her childhood home. The photo below is her dresser in her recreated bedroom in the Dylan Thomas Birthplace.

PAU, France | Thomas looks to cement Tour lead in final mountain leg

PAU, France | Thomas looks to cement Tour lead in final mountain leg
PAU, France  — Arnaud Demare was rewarded Thursday for hauling his muscular frame over the Alps and through the Pyrenees. Geraint Thomas, meanwhile, is preparing to cement his hold on the yellow jersey in Friday’s final mountain test of the Tour de France. After many of his competitors were unable to get through the mountains, Demare took advantage by dominating a mass sprint in Stage 18.
It marked the first victory by a French team, Groupama-FDJ, in this year’s race.  Sprinters Fernando Gaviria of Colombia and Dylan Groenewegen — who had each won two stages in this Tour — called it quits during Stage 12 to Alpe d’Huez. That came a day after Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel, who have a combined 44 Tour stage wins between them, failed to make the time cut on another mountain leg.
Demare said he was motivated by an accusation on social media from Andre Greipel, a top German sprinter, who alleged that Demare held on to his team car on the way up the grueling Col du Portet in Stage 17.
Demare finished Wednesday’s stage second to last but managed to avoid the time cut as thousands of French spectators cheered him on.
Greipel, who also quit in Stage 12, later apologized on Twitter, saying he had relied on “incorrect” information.  “It hurt me enormously,” Demare said. “It’s a shame that people cast doubts over my performance and my hard work. … I thought a lot about (Greipel) today. It’s not in my mindset or my philosophy to (cheat).
I worked hard in the mountains before the Tour and, as a result, I made it through mountain stages when most of the sprinters did not.”
Demare, who failed to make the cut on a climb in the Alps last year, had time to celebrate as he crossed the line with his arms wide open ahead of fellow Frenchman Christophe Laporte.
Alexander Kristoff of Norway crossed third in the same time. After two grueling days in the Pyrenees, Thomas was able to enjoy his seventh day in the yellow jersey during the less challenging 171-kilometer (106-mile) leg from Trie-Sur-Baise to Pau, which featured only two minor climbs and a flat finish.
Thomas remained 1 minute, 59 seconds ahead of Tom Dumoulin with the Welshman’s Sky teammate and four-time champion Chris Froome third, 2:31 behind.
Only two challenging stages remain — a lengthy leg through the Pyrenees on Friday including three major climbs, then a technical individual time trial on Saturday — before the mostly ceremonial finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday. Stage 19 starts in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes and takes the peloton over legendary climbs like the Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Aubisque.
“We’re expecting the worst, hoping for the best. … It’s the last mountain stage and I think guys will try to take every opportunity they can,” Thomas said. “But we’ve been riding real well the whole race, so hopefully we can keep that going for one more day.” After Froome cracked on the Col du Portet, all of Sky’s strategy is aimed at getting Thomas to Paris in yellow — meaning Froome may have to help.
“Hopefully we won’t have to use Froomey. Hopefully we’ll have strength in numbers and he’ll be able to just follow as well,” Thomas said. “But obviously having Froomey at my disposal, so to speak, is just phenomenal.”
Perhaps a bigger worry for Thomas and Froome concerns the unruly fans who have consistently affected this Tour by spitting at riders — or even reaching out to grab them. One fan who reached over the barriers nearly took Thomas down on Wednesday
“I thought it was maybe an accident, just maybe an overly exuberant fan,” Thomas said. “But when I got back to the hotel and was showed the pictures it was obviously something else. It’s not nice. It’s not what you want.”
On a warm day in southern France, Stage 18 took riders through the vineyards of Madiran to the city of Pau, the birthplace of 16th-century King Henri IV. It was the 70th time that the Tour passed through Pau, which first hosted the race in 1930.
Five riders — Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Mathew Hayman (Mitchelton-Scott), Luke Durbridge (Mitchelton-Scott), Niki Terpstra (Quick-Step Floors) and Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) — were involved in an early breakaway. The sprinters’ teams never let them get much more than two minutes ahead, and they were caught with 16.5 kilometers to go.
Otherwise, it was a very calm stage except for a minor crash involving Stage 17 winner Nairo Quintana and British rider Adam Yates midway through the route. Both riders got back on their bikes and continued without apparent problems. ___
