Friday, August 4.
hair!
Hairy moments. We remain unsure exactly why this phrase is used to describe a situation that is hazardous, frightening, difficult, dangerous, or in any sense uncomfortable or threatening. #hair, as we have come to understand it, is none of these things. Hair is, in fact, a pretty good thing when all is said and done. It is something we would like to pay tribute to today, in all its many forms: long, short, shaved, afro, curly, dreadlocked, straightened, unkempt... it's all good, good stuff.
It can totally change a person's appearance, or even tell you a little something about their character. And while attitudes towards hairstyles have varied widely across different countries and historical periods, it is now typically understood as a reflection of a person's personal beliefs or social position—including age, culture, or religion. And it is a lot of fun to play with. There are even some on this Earth who, unlike the rest of us mere mortals, have a head of hair *perfect* for styling, molding, and creating into endlessly fun shapes. So we gathered one or two of these folk below for your viewing pleasure, we being the generous people we are.
Happy Friday. If you have any hairy moments, may they be good ones x

What shade of red js Red's hair?? Ginger, auburn, scarlet??
It's a particular kind of shade that I refer to as "anime red"
Tumblr media
His hair color should be thought of as less of a "natural redhead" (so not ginger or auburn) and more of a "improbable Mage-hair red", akin to Briony with her pink hair! Hope that makes sense!

Where does Beleg’s light-coloured hair come from? Is it just fanon? Thank you!
Hair Colour of Beleg (and the Sindar)
To the enduring enrichment of fandom discourse, descriptions of physical appearance are (famously) very few and far between in Tolkien's writings.
Beleg, though, is an interesting case because we actually have a painting of him by Tolkien! If you haven't yet seen the 'Red Boots Beleg', your day is about to get better:
Tumblr media
This is a close-up of a larger painting, dating to July 1928 and originally entitled 'Beleg finds Flinding in Taur-na-Fúin' (Flindling was the name of Gwindor's character in the Lay of the Children of Húrin). Tolkien later titled it 'Fangorn Forest' and used it as an illustration for LotR. But it was originally meant to be Beleg and Gwindor.
Here's the full painting, where you can see the title 'Fangorn Forest' has been added:
Tumblr media
As this painting is the only canonical reference we have for Beleg's hair colour, Beleg is canonically dark-haired.
(A small consolation for fans of light-haired Beleg: Being from 1928, the painting is quite early in the development of the legendarium, and Tolkien was known to change his mind on things, including what this painting depicted.)
However, the fandom's fondness for light-haired Beleg did not arise out of nowhere. Beleg is one of the Sindar, who are a subset of the Teleri, and several major Teler characters in the legendarium are described as silver-haired: Thingol, Olwë, Eärwen, Círdan, and Celeborn. So it makes perfect sense that readers would think silver hair was common among the Teleri.
(There's also the influence, of course, of the Peter Jackson films which are full of light-haired elves, including Sindarin Legolas.)
Here's from the essay 'Quendi and Eldar' in History of Middle-earth Vol. 11: The War of the Jewels:
Elwe himself had indeed long and beautiful hair of silver hue, but this does not seem to have been a common feature of the Sindar, though it was found among them occasionally, especially in the nearer or remoter kin of Elwe (as in the case of Círdan). In general the Sindar appear to have very closely resembled the Exiles, being dark-haired, strong and tall, but lithe.
No kinship between Beleg and Thingol is ever mentioned, for the record. But again, for silver-hair fans, this passage doesn't exclude the possibility that someone unrelated to Thingol could have silver hair. It just wasn't common.
References
This fantastic compilation of the evidence on elven hair colours has all the sources.
Information on the 'Fangorn' painting is from the Tolkien Estate's website.

Feel free to google the colors, they all have slightly different interpretations. No actual discourse, please, we are all here in good fun.
(Here's a shitpost about it.)
* I've been told this is a point of contention regarding real-life Ewan McGregor as well.
** Let's go with Revenge of the Sith, for point in time, since hair obviously changes as you age etc.
I played with adding in copper/golden blonde/chestnut/chestnut red/mahogany etc, but felt that wasn't true to the game, so the only 'hedging' shade I'm including is auburn.
From the linked post, btw:
He’s animated and drawn with subtly different shades of that middling color between all three 'base' colors. Some cultures would consider him a redhead, and some would consider him a strawberry blonde, and some would consider him a brunette. It’s all relative and we’re not having that conversation again. General practice has him as some variety of muted redhead, and that’s what I’m sticking with.
From @epicmusic42:
As someone with the same type of hair colour as Ewan, I will chime in to say that stress levels and sun exposure literally change the colour. Low stress + high sun = ginger Low stress + Low sun = brown High stress + high sun = arguably pink High stress + Low sun = blonde

@annoyinglyshinycherryblossom asked on this post what the hair colors were for the people on the lockets.
Locket hair colors
The locket designs are done with their hair, so here's an image from one of the design books (French translation):
Tumblr media
Emile C. -- very yellow-blond
Oliver A. -- very pale, kind of platinum blond
Alex B. -- deep ginger/red
Cloudia/Claudia P. -- blue-black or blue-gray, which is apparently the typical Phantomhive hair color. The twins are supposed to have this color of hair, too.
Molly/Mally G. -- brown, perhaps a bright brown
Gilbert D. -- silver gray
Harry E. -- dark grey or possibly blue-black/blue-gray. Looks a lot like Phantomhive hair....

Akane’s hair color
Every now and then I’ll remember that Akane is not a ginger but instead has brown hair… and I hear the sound of my heart cracking for no reason what so ever
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my defense: The anime made him a ginger…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the anime’s defense: In artworks that have a super saturated color palette, Aida tends to (or at least used to) draw him with more of an orangey tint to his hair, so that’s probably what they were going by…
