What Rural Means to Me
The definition of rural is subjective and depends on one’s personal experiences and imagined geographies. The rural environment is inherently linked to the urban for their definitions depend upon their distinctions from each other. In short, without one the other would cease to exist. Agriculture, lush wilderness and remote communities; as an urban dweller, it is easy to oversimplify the rural into a few narrow themes. However, these assumptions negate the rich diversity and complex socio-cultural networks that these spaces have to offer. Currently, over 80% of Canada’s population live in cities. Due to this uneven distribution in population, many important political decisions are made within heavily populated urban centers such as Toronto or Ottawa and then implemented on the rural’s behalf. One in every eight jobs in Canada is related to agriculture with Canadian farmers now selling to over 150 countries worldwide. The agri-food industry contributes over $110 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product every year. However, the importance of Canadian rural landscapes far exceeds its economic output. These natural environments provide opportunities for tourism, recreation, spiritual nourishment, and is essential for the understanding of Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).
My experiences within rural Ontario mainly stem from the summers that I have spent visiting my grandparents in Innisfil. They are fortunate enough to own a waterfront property on the shores of Lake Simcoe. My grandfather not only lives in the rural, but also embodies the rural lifestyle. As one of twelve children, he was able to obtain a middle school education at which point he left school to help his family out on the farm. To me, living in the rural means hunting, ice fishing trips and snowmobile rides. It means actually knowing your neighbours’ names and long drives into town for amenities such as a bowling alley or movie theatre. It means looking up at the night sky and being able to see more than just the North star. Population increases and the ever-growing demand for resources has placed pressure on these rural environments like never before. It is these landscapes that give Canada its world-renowned beauty and therefore should be protected at all costs.

Meet the Maker: 20 Questions With Yours Truly
Hey gang,
I thought I would take some time to introduce myself this week. I figured, if you are curious about our products, you might want to know a little bit about who is making them, and also, who is writing this blog. So here you go: 20 questions. Asked by me, answered by me(that should make it easy).
Question #1. Who the heck are you?
My name is Nathan Dale. I'm a Father to a 2 year old boy, a husband, son, and brother to 5 awesome siblings. My family and I live in Innisfil, Ontario(That's in Canada, eh?). I'm 31 years old. I run my own business(this one) from home, which I operate through the week as much as I can(although at times it is a 24/7 thing), and I work long hours on weekends at my second job, to make up for the time off through the week. My interests include Soap(obvi), fatherhood, self-improvement, fitness, scotch, tattoos, music, and hockey(Go Leafs Go!). I think that about sums it up.
Question #2. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the town of Bradford, only a 20 minute drive from my house now. At the time, it was a small place, mainly made up of descendants of Portuguese, Dutch, and English settlers. I grew up working on farms around the area, as that is pretty much all that was out there at the time. Bradford has exploded over the last 5 or 10 years, but it is still a farm town at heart. So much so, that they celebrate every year with a carrot festival. I loved working on farms. Fewer things feel better than working hard outside all day, then coming home to a long bath and falling asleep when your face meets the pillow. I am thankful for that experience.
Question #3. How did you do in school?
Terrible. I dropped out of high school – twice. But I went back and finished as an adult. It was then that I realized how easy the work was, if I just focused on it and got it done. It was also when I discovered my passion for writing, which I am now trying to put to use.
Question #4. Did you go to college/university?
Nope. When I turned 19, I had already moved out of my parent's place, and was working full time. I spent my early 20s working in a factory. I hated the work, but I met a lot of great friends on the night shift who I still talk to today, as well as the woman who would become my wife. I also learned a trade. I'd say things worked out pretty well.
Question #5. Why did you start your own business?
Since I started 'adulting', I have always been an overtime/side hustle kind of guy. Or, at the very least, someone who wants to keep busy. Before my son was born, I played in a band, I had a golf membership, and worked overtime almost every weekend – between gigs! Since then, things have changed. When I decided to make a go of it, I had been looking for a good side hustle, and since I was already making soap, and there seemed to be a lot interest in the sort of product I could bring to market, I thought “why not?”.
Question #6. What's the deal with the band?
The summer of 2011 was a big deal for me. My wife and I got married, and I started playing in my first band. I had played drums since I was 13, but never in a group. We were called Sleepless, and we were. We played originals, and never really made any money, but we played our butts off, and went on small 2-3 week-long tours. Some of the best memories I have are from the 4 years I spent behind the kit, and I hope to do it again someday.
Question #7. Did you say 5 siblings?!
Yep! I'm one of 6. 3 boys, 3 girls, spaced out over 18 years. All with the same biological parents, who just celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary, Mom and Pops!
Question #8. How do you balance being a dad and working 2 jobs?
That, my friends, is another blog entry altogether.
Question #9. Have you done much traveling?
Not really, no. I've done a lot of sight-seeing in this area(4hr radius), and I've been to Montreal a handful of times, and the Maritime Provinces once. When my wife turned 30 we took a trip to Cuba, which was fun, but the resort-style vacation isn't my cup of tea. I'd rather explore, and meet locals, find hole-in-the-wall pubs, and take in other cultures.
Question #10. If you could go anywhere, where would it be?
It's a toss-up. I've always wanted to hike through Scotland and do a scotch tour of some kind, but I live in Canada, one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and I've only seen 0.001% of it. Especially now that I'm a dad, I'd love to pack the family up and spend a month or two, driving coast to coast.
Question #11. You cheer for the buds, eh?
Sure do. I have memories of visiting my grandparents when I was really young, and the Leaf game always being on in the background. I can remember my Papa yelling at the T.V., “Shoot the puck!”.
I started out as just a hockey fan in general, with as many as 6 'favourite' teams. But, the more other people told me the Leafs stunk, the more I liked them, and wanted them to win. I know, “losers since '67, blah blah blah”. But one day, it's gonna happen!
Question #12. Are you a vegan?
My soaps are. I am not.
Question #13. What kind of music do you listen to?
My taste has changed a number of times. That's one of the best parts about music. If a certain song comes on by an artist I used to listen to quite a bit at a different time in my life – Bam! It can put me right back into that time, a specific moment, even. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of newer indie folk, but I'm also revisiting a lot of classic Motown. I guess I feel the need to offset all the sad-sap folk with something upbeat. Both of these genres are generally kid-friendly, so its great to put on a playlist and not have to worry about what song is next when my son and I are hanging out.
Question #14. What is the most interesting thing about you?
I would have to say it's my contradictions. For instance, I'm a 6'3, 240lb bearded man with a rugged exterior, but I make soap. I love smoking cigars, but I use all-natural toothpaste. I drink scotch(when I can afford it), but I wake up early to make blueberry pancakes and dance to The Jackson 5. I could go on, but you're probably picking up what I'm laying down. Variety is the spice of life, er, something.
Question #15. What is your biggest regret?
Lame. Next?
Question #16. What is your favourite book?
The Obstacle Is The Way: The Timeless Art Of Turning Trials Into Triumph, by Ryan Holiday. The title says it all, really. Holiday uses historical figures to demonstrate how successful people not only survive adversity, but find ways to use the very thing that is stopping them from reaching their goals, to their advantage. I would recommend it to anyone.
Question #17. What is your favourite movie?
I like epic period pieces, like Gladiator, Gangs of New York, and 12 Years A Slave. Slap-stick comedies are good. But I watch more Dora and The Wiggles nowadays.
Questions #18. What is your guilty pleasure?
I know all of the lyrics to Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album. It's just really good writing, okay?!
Question #19. If you weren't making soap, what would you be doing?
There are a few other things I could see myself doing. I've always liked the idea of restoring old furniture. I'd likely be playing music, albeit a quieter instrument. Maybe a podcast about fatherhood, or modern men's lifestyle in general. It's hard to say.
Question #20. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
The dreaded, yet standard performance review question! Look, this is how I see it: If life ended tomorrow, I'd be happy. Not happy to die, but happy with what I had done with my time. I like how things are right now, and I'm grateful for what I have. That being said, while I am here, I am going to continue working. Working on myself, working on my family, my house, my business... all aspects. If you are given the time and the opportunity, you owe it to those who weren't, to make the best life you can. So, in 5 years, If my family and I are healthy, I'll be happy. If Mud & Honey is still in business, I'll be stoked, and if both have flourished, I'll be ecstatic.
Thanks for reading, folks. Please leave a comment or criticism in the comment section below!

Op Ed: We Just Launched the First Cryptocurrency-to-Tax Payment Partnership
Andrei Poliakov is the CEO and co-founder of Coinberry, one of Canada’s premier digital currency platforms. His company is the first in Canada to partner with a government municipality.
I am an engineer by trade. Creating more efficient processes, products and eventually building businesses has been a passion of mine since I can remember. When I got involved with blockchain technology, I realized right away the potential benefits the application of this new technology could have on the financial industry.
But this was several years ago, when people would think you were a little crazy if you brought up Bitcoin at an event or a party. So I got down to building a business, a team and tech that would bring about mass adoption of blockchain technology and, more specifically, the application of blockchain technology to finances in the form of cryptocurrencies.
And finally, it’s happening all around you. Right now, at this very moment. Most people miss it, but what we’re seeing in early 2019 is the birth of cryptocurrency mass adoption and it’s affecting governments in a positive way.
While a lot of people are asking themselves, “Is this really the next bull run?” or “Are we really going to see Facebook or ‘XYZ’ social network launch a cryptocurrency?” governments are starting to implement technology to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions today.
Real change is happening, at a governmental level, that will pave the way towards mass adoption.
The Wave Is Rising
In early March 2019, Coinberry provided the technology, infrastructure and implementation for the town of Innisfil, a government municipality in Canada, to start accepting tax payments in bitcoin.
This was a huge win for the industry.
While the municipality is small, the innovation from the government and the willingness for a government agency to accept cryptocurrency is a giant leap forward. It is the first government partnership of its kind in Canada.
While this partnership is just a start, it is one of the first changes that will unleash additional government adoption moving forward.
Other government municipalities have started asking us about the implementation, wanting to know more about how, why and what it would take to offer similar services to their residents.
Why are they now, all of a sudden, so interested in blockchain technology? What does this mean for governments moving forward? To get a clear picture of what’s coming, we’ve got to look at the underlying motivation of municipalities from a government funding perspective.
Money, Motivation and Government Funding
Regardless of where you stand on the issue of government spending, all governments need money to pay for things like roads, schools, police, fire, hospitals and the like. At present, most governments have very limited options when it comes to making this happen.
They can raise money by increasing taxes, issuing bonds or by printing more money. The latter option is only available to federal governments.
One additional option, that was not fully available until cryptocurrency arrived, is to cut transaction costs by using more efficient financial technology.
This last solution is the low-hanging fruit that governments, like Innisfil’s, are focused on and is a trend that is poised to spread quickly through small and large municipalities alike.
Trend One: Increasing Funds Without Increasing Taxes
Governments are starting to realize that cryptocurrency provides a safe, easy way to reduce transaction costs. This is not a hypothetical scenario anymore: This is a reality. With relatively little effort, a municipality can have more funds without increasing taxes, issuing a bond or implementing budget cuts. This idea has led to an increase in the number of municipalities that are interested in cryptocurrency, both as a form of tax payment and, eventually, as a means to facilitate government transactions: think payroll, contractors and municipal investments.
Take bank fees as an example.
Our involvement with Innisfil began when the municipality approached us with a challenge. It was paying in the neighborhood of $5 million annually in bank fees when it came to processing payments and it wanted to reduce this cost.
Saving a percentage of transaction fees — in this case on an annual basis — could result in hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars saved.
Imagine a 5 percent savings in transaction costs on the $5 million paid in fees annually. That’s $2.5 million in transaction costs saved over 10 years. While this isn’t necessarily a large number in and of itself, I wouldn’t dismiss it, especially when those savings can be obtained with minimal cost and effort.
Reducing transactions costs on tax payments alone, simply by utilizing a more efficient technology, frees up money that the government is able to regain without having to affect you, the citizen.
More governments will realize this and look to implement similar technology in their own regions. Which brings us to the next trend.
Trend Two: Adaptation of Municipal Law
Take the tax example above. Let’s say that “Municipality A” collects $500 million in tax revenue. To put this in perspective, Toronto — one of the largest cities in the world — collects over $11 billion dollars per year on average through various revenue streams.
At the moment, if a municipality starts collecting 10 percent of the above $500 million in revenue in cryptocurrency — or $50 million in this case — it would need to immediately convert that to fiat currency. Why? Because some cryptocurrencies are securities and while the law varies depending on the region, most municipalities are not allowed to invest in securities at the moment and have very limited options when it comes to assets that they are allowed to invest in.
As such, the $50 million in cryptocurrency would need to be immediately converted to fiat currency.
But what happens if a government contractor, a construction company who has won the next bid to fix the local roads for $10 million, says, “If you pay in cryptocurrency, we’ll give you a 10 percent discount. We’ll all save on transaction costs and, to be honest, to do this job we need to purchase equipment overseas. We’d rather pay for that equipment in cryptocurrency and save on transaction fees along the way as well.”
That 10 percent discount could amount to an additional $1 million in the government’s coffers. Perhaps it could put that toward building that recreation center it’s been promising to build every time elections comes around.
Or what happens when municipal employees start asking for payment in cryptocurrency? Or governments realize that they can save transaction costs in other areas of operations?
As governments start to accumulate cryptocurrency via tax revenue, expect to see a slow build in pressure to shift municipal law toward allowing municipalities to hold and transact in cryptocurrency.
Trend Three: Raising Funds
The third trend that we’re going to start seeing relates to raising money through bonds. If you’re a government and you need to raise money for a new street, for a new community center, to fix potholes or to pay for the police and fire department, you essentially have three primary ways to raise the necessary capital. Only two are applicable at the municipal level.
Option 1: You can reshape the allocation of current tax revenue (budget cuts) or increase taxes on property, business or individuals.
Option 2: You can print more money, driving inflation, lowering purchasing power and affecting economic growth. This is only an option at the federal level and does not apply to municipalities.
Option 3: You can sell bonds — promissory notes that allow companies and individuals to invest in your government. Government bonds typically come with both a very low rate of return but also come with a very low default risk.
While other, smaller options may be available, we’ll stick to these primary methods for now.
It’s no secret that all governments need money. Everyone is running on deficit, using money allocations from federal, state or provincial governments. Raising capital through bond issuance via cryptocurrency is going to be the next immediate trend that governments start to leverage.
Here’s why:
Cryptocurrency bond issuance can reduce transaction costs on the issuance itself — saving hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars in the process.
Governments will be able to tap into much larger markets, opening up to easier and cheaper foreign investments.
Governments will be able to provide liquidity for their bond offerings, encouraging investors to invest into their bonds.
With government bond tokenization, many benefits start to unfold that allow for a more efficient marketplace. In the very near future, within 12 months or so, I would expect to see government bond issuance via cryptocurrency.
It Comes Down to Ease
No one is going to deny that blockchains and cryptocurrencies are difficult concepts to grasp. They’re quite complex in general, and the technology and development are conducted by experts in the field.
But just as you don’t need to understand how H.264 encoding works to watch the latest high-definition movie trailer on YouTube, understanding the intricacies of blockchain technologies is not necessary for leveraging the applications that run on them. Ultimately, it all comes down to ease of use.
In summary, expect to see more governments adopting blockchain technology to reduce costs, municipal laws to shift favorably toward cryptocurrencies and for governments to start looking at raising capital on blockchains. We’re already seeing larger municipalities like Richmond Hill explore the possibility of using cryptocurrency for tax remittance as well.
It’s happening all around you. Right now, at this very moment. The wave is rising and the birth of mass adoption is happening.
This is a guest post by Andrei Poliakov, CEO and co-founder of Coinberry. Opinions expressed are entirely his own and do not necessarily reflect those of BTC Inc or Bitcoin Magazine.
