After years of working activity wherein standing for more than nine hours a day was routine, he commenced experiencing extreme lower back and leg ache. “I even switched jobs to where I would be sitting more, but that still didn’t help. I knew something was wrong.”

chronic back pain
Any back pain which extends more than three months is considered to have reached chronic state. Chronic back pain is age prone and is more cumbersome when one could not decipher the cause of pain. Besides occurring due to previous injuries, chronic back pain can also happen owing to arthritis of spine, spinal stenosis, disc problems including herniated disc and unexplained muscle pain or myofascial pain syndrome.
Overuse, poor posture, injury in the muscles, ligaments and discs that support the spine cause pressure on the spinal neves which complicate back pain. Need to visit the physician is signalled by symptoms such as sudden spike in pain, loss of bladder function, high fever, intense stomach pain, unexplained weight loss and pain after severe fall.
Kidney, pancreas, appendix and large intestine influence back pain. Kidney stones which result in difficulty during urination or blood in the urine can cause lower back pain and fever. Inflammation in pancreas and appendix may create pain in upper and lower abdomen respectively that radiates to the lower back. Inflammation in large intestine also causes low back pain.
The doctor initially suggests physical therapy for back pain which is customized to suit the conditions or symptoms.
Exercises such as walking, swimming and yoga have proven to be efficient in treating back pain. Cycling which is considered as a form of aerobic exercise is good option for treating back pain because it is less jarring to the spine compared to other exercises.
Physical therapy, mindfulness and meditation, diet, lifestyle, injection based treatment, alternative treatments and pharmacological treatments are non surgical methods to treat severe back pain.
Exercise for back pain is customized because all exercises do not fetch results for everyone. Exercise options include retraining posture, testing limits of pain tolerance, flexibility exercises, aerobic exercises and core strengthening.
The emotional stress that is attached with back pain results in frustration, irritability and depression which are dealt by rehabilitation psychologists through cognitive and relaxation therapies such as yoga and tai chi so that mind relieves itself from focus on pain.
Highly inflammatory diets which are rich in trans fat, such as refined sugars and processed foods must be avoided by patients suffering from chronic back pain. Lifestyle measures include listing activities that enhance back pain and refraining from the same.
Injections such as nerve blocks, epidural steroid injections and nerve ablations can be used only when source of back pain is deciphered. Analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and medications are also useful in controlling chronic back pain, but could cause side effects and are not suitable for prolonged use.
Acupuncture, massage, laser therapy, electrical nerve stimulations are other non surgical spine treatments which could be considered for chronic back pain. However these treatments must be carried out by the recommendation of physician and under supervision.
Chronic back pain cannot be left unattended lest it should result in permanent disabilities including narrowing of spinal space, severe nerve pain and nerve damage. Back pain also promotes spinal trauma and spine cancer.

Trend and Overall Growth Analysis of Rubber Cultivation in Kerala | Chapter 11 | Current Perspective to Economics and Management Vol. 2
In the present century also, agriculture is the main source of livelihood for majority of the people of Kerala. But agricultural sector is under the big threat of economic reforms like liberalization and modernization of economy.  The agrarian economy of Kerala could not exclude from the drastic hitting of the liberalization, privatization and globalization reforms; farmers of the state began to think that there is no other way to sustain their life. The statistical profile of Kerala agriculture in the last five decades experienced agricultural transformation. In this change, plantation crops increased considerably. Changing cropping pattern in terms of acreage allocation among different crops is the integral feature of Kerala agrarian economy. The diversification of crops in terms of variation in acreage allocation has taken place due to price and non-price factors like agro-climatic conditions, labour availability, irrigation facilities, soil fertility, cost of cultivation, price levels, profitability, mechanisation, etc. The change has taken place largely in favour of non-food crops and recently it is towards rubber. The real growth of agricultural crop output has declined continuously since 1960-61 compared to monetary growth. In the case of rubber, the crop exhibited positive values in all the components in the decomposition analysis.

In February this year, the MJF Charitable Foundation embarked on its most ambitious project today – the MJF Centre for Dignified and Sustainable Empowerment – East. The Centre replicates the concept of empowerment with dignity for underprivileged and marginalised communities that the MJF Centre for Dignified and Sustainable Empowerment - South implements. An initiative by the MJF Charitable Foundation which fulfills Dilmah Founder Merrill J. Fernando's philosophy of making business a matter of human service, the Centre in the East has the vision to transform the lives of the communities whose wellbeing was compromised due to the ethnic conflict.
Amidst preparation for delivering a great outcome for people in the East, the MJF Charitable Foundation team recently convened the government officials, business community, representatives of Rotary Sri Lanka and the Eastern University for a special meeting in Kalkudah to enable them gain insights into this largest ever humanitarian and environmental project getting off the ground in the Eastern region, post war.
The project, it is envisaged, would improve the quality of life of the communities that are most underserved and deserving of assistance.
A replication of several community development initiatives under the MJF Charitable Foundation such as the MJF Centre in Moratuwa which implements multifaceted projects, the National Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy & Developmental Disorders in Ambagahawatte, Sithijaya Centre in Ambalantota, Empower Culinary & Hospitality School, this Centre in the East has the objective to find long term solutions to the foremost challenges faced by the community in the area- predominantly the issues of unemployment, lack of vocational training opportunities, teenage pregnancies, high rate of school drop outs, deteriorating forest cover etc. Of the 14 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Eastern Province, the Centre will primarily focus on nine DS Divisions including areas with the highest concentration of vulnerable communities. Additionally, Dilmah Conservation will replicate its successful organic model garden established at the Moratuwa Centre - Dilmah Conservation Sustainable Agriculture Research Center at the MJF Centre in the East as a means of promoting human nutrition, reducing the cost of living and enhancing life through contact with nature. A place for research and development on sustainable agricultural methods and appropriate urban agriculture, the model garden at the Centre will have a few additions such as a cashew nursery, cashew processing centre, a market place for the beneficiaries to sell their products and waste management units with the objective to promote sustainable living amongst the occupants in Sri Lanka's East.
The management advisory team of the Centre include; Rotarian Past President M. Ganesharajah (Rotary Club Batticaloa, Commissioner of Inland Revenue for the East and the North), Rotarian Past President Dr. K. E. Karunakaran (Rotary Club of Batticaloa and member of the Faculty of Healthcare Sciences in the Eastern University of Sri Lanka), Rtn.N.Pathmanathan (District Governor 2002-2003, RI District 3220 - Sri Lanka & The Maldives), Dilhan C. Fernando (Trustee of the MJF Foundation), Thamindri De Silva (Manager – Strategic Development of the MJF Foundation) and S. Kamalanathan (Manager – Projects of the MJF Foundation).
