The Rescue

Story Summary: When Aq Vetina is attacked by droids, the 212th is there. Din is saved by a man in white and orange armor.

Outside his hiding place, something explodes. Din whimpers. He doesn’t know what’s happening, beyond that there are droids attacking his home and his Ma and Papa put him in here and told him to stay put. Why didn’t they stay here with me? There’s another explosion, then another, and another. Screaming, too. It’s different from when he and his friends play tag or play-wrestle. He doesn’t like it. Not at all. Tears stream down his cheeks.

I want my Ma I want my Papa please please please--

The doors to his hiding place creak open. Din wimpers again, panic almost blinding him. It’s a droid; a huge, big-bodied metal monster like nothing he’s ever seen. It raises its arm, aiming at him (I’m gonna die, it’s gonna shoot at me, it’ll hurt so much) and then it breaks in half with a flash of light and a crackling sound.

Din flinches. But the person standing behind the broken droid is just that-- a person. A person in white and orange armor that he’s never seen before, holding a sword made of blue light. Then the light-sword vanishes and the person holds only a small metal stick. Din has never seen anyone that looks so… heroic. Like the stories his Ma and Papa tell when they put him to bed.

“You okay, kid?” The person-- man-- asks.

Din sniffs. He doesn’t know who this is, but he stopped the droid that was attacking him so he must be a friend. Maybe his Ma and Papa sent him? The man reaches out his free hand.

“Name’s Cody, kid. I’m gonna get you out of here.”

Din takes his hand and Cody pulls him into his arms. Din shoves his face into the hard surface of Cody’s armor so he doesn’t have to look at the fighting and blasterfire and the only home he’s ever known burning and broken. He hears the sound of the light-sword again, and suddenly they’re moving, very quickly. Quicker than his Ma and Papa had run with him. And then, just as suddenly, he’s being set on the ground behind a pile of rubble. There are two other people in white and orange armor hiding here.

“Keep the kid safe.” Cody orders.

The two men look at Din. He can’t see their faces either, all hidden behind helmets. Din sniffs. “Yes, Sir!” They chorus.

Cody runs off.

One of the men crouches and removes his helmet. “Name’s Waxer, Kid. This is Boil. What’s yours?”

“Din.” Din says.

Waxer gives him a smile. “Well, Din, we’re gonna keep you safe, alright? Just stick with us.”

Din nods. I can do that.
