What The Hell Is Wrong With Destiny 2 And The People Who Play It
I got bored of Destiny 2 some years ago and stopped playing just before they cut half the game out. After that, every time I thought to myself "yknow I feel like some solid shooty gameplay, maybe I should reinstall Destiny 2" I would realize that the moment of fun my memory conjured up was of some part of the game that no longer exists.
Tumblr media
Some time ago, they decided to do a big story event where several of the in game world locations got taken over by the bad guys, and those locations would be "vaulted" and would no longer be accessible. Kind of a neat idea story-wise that I would normally even be in favor of, but in practice it just meant that all the best content got taken out of the game forever.
My favorite activities were the Escalation Protocol endless fight on Mars, the Black Armory Forges, doing jobs on the Tangled Shore so I could barter with Spider, and the two Vanguard Strikes: A Garden World and The Will of the Thousands. My favorite weapons were the Hammerhead heavy machine gun and the Kindled Orchid hand cannon.
Now I have none of those things.
Tumblr media
I only came back to Destiny 2 when they did a big promotional Free Week, when the latest two expansion packs became available to play for free. I don't really care enough to do a thorough analysis of why, but I don't like any of the new stuff as much as the stuff that got thrown out. Rather, I want to talk about the something deeper that was a really big part of the experience of coming back to this game in its current state without having played all the lead up stuff.
I've been playing a lot, still, even though the best stuff is gone, but it's only because of inertia. The general moment to moment gameplay is still Good. I like shooting stuff. I like the pace at which shooting stuff is broken up by tossing a grenade or shooting a giant laser. Charging up a void grenade by holding down the button for a second is viscerally impactful and I wish every game had something like that.
Tumblr media
I was gonna praise the environment design but all the best environments were removed, and instead we get a place that's just ice, a place that's just more Hive caves, and a place that's just more Earth ruins. The paradise in disrepair of Titan, the pieced together nonsense of Mercury's Infinite Forest, the angular alien computer labyrinths of Io, the islands of space rubble tied together with rope to make up the Tangled Shore, all gone now.
Enemy design though, is actually really good most of the time. It could be better, but what's there is certainly miles ahead of most other shooty games that only pit you against generic dudes with guns. It isn't quite on the level of Vermintide 2, but it wouldn't take much to get it there. I won't go into how I'd do that though, because I'm here to complain about all this other stuff.
So yeah, the basic core gameplay loop of running around shooting guys and occasionally casting a spell, that's all pretty nice, especially with the visual and auditory polish, like the little explosions when you get headshots, and the deep thumping of hand cannons firing and such. Plus, there's a lot of varied little grinds to do that give you an excuse to go places and shoot stuff. And Then They Fuck It Up. They fuck it all up, they do it on purpose, because they want your money.
Tumblr media
BUNGIE HATES YOU AND WANTS YOUR MONEY
So there's this thing, this concept, a psychological phenomenon, a driving force within people that can be seen in many aspects of life. They call it "Fear Of Missing Out," or FOMO, and it's a source of anxiety in many people. Advertisers may use it intentionally to get people more interested in buying that one flavor that only comes around in a specific season. It's not necessarily bad, sometimes it can push people to discover new things, but still it is anxiety, and many game developers try to avoid creating that sense in their players.
Not Destiny 2. Destiny 2 is weaponized industrial grade FOMO.
Tumblr media
A great deal of Destiny 2's content is delivered through Seasons, which Google tells me last an average of ten weeks. Every season includes a big treasure trove of brand new loot, probably some new game mode, some new story bits but who cares, and a giant rewards track full of challenges and useful stuff like cash and upgrade materials and whatnot.
Seasons are also locked behind a pay wall called the Season Pass. The Season Pass is not cheap. I haven't done any math about this but I estimate that less than a quarter of the content added in any given season is available for free. At the end of the season, most of that stuff gets thrown away forever. If not at the end of the season, then after a few seasons. At time of writing I think some parts of the previous three(?) seasons are still available. I'm not a hundred percent sure what's still there though, because it's locked behind season passes I don't have.
Tumblr media
All this is IN ADDITION to the Expansions, which are what you'd expect of DLC: a hefty chunk of new story, some new location to play in, and a bunch of other new stuff like gear and cosmetics and whatever.
Since there are two different ongoing sets of paid content, nearly everything new is unavailable to free players. The new story stuff, the latest game modes, and the best gear. The Beyond Light expansion introduced a new subclass and I don't get that either, because I'm now also a free player, even though I actually bought the previous two expansions, Forsaken and Shadowkeep. Incidentally, a bunch of Forsaken is now gone, so I no longer have access to a bunch of the stuff I paid for, thanks for that. Witch Queen introduced a weapon crafting thing, and surprisingly I do get that, though I only get like a quarter at best of all the crafting recipes.
Tumblr media
Paywalled cosmetics and story is one thing, but best gear is quite another, especially in this game with all its PvP shit that they care about so much. Differences in gear are usually pretty slight though, so I'll ignore that for now. But locking all the newer game modes behind paywalls is just stupid. Don't you want the paying customers to have as many people to play with as possible?
New thing in season 18 is called Ketchcrash, some kinda thing were we invade a pirate ship in space. Sounds cool. Okay, gave it a try, it was alright, some neat little set pieces in there, can see this being a fun grind. So what rewards do I get? What comes next? Oh, nothing is next and I get no rewards, because I have to buy the season pass. Welp, guess I'll never do any of that ever again, said thousands upon thousands of free players.
They don't care. They have whales to suckle from. It speaks to a deeper sickness, an apathy that pervades the design and the playerbase. I hesitate to call it a "community." If it's a community they don't communicate very well.
NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING AND NOBODY CARES
Tumblr media
Hey Various Destiny Wikis And Information Resources, is it still possible to get the Archon's Thunder? I sure would like a heavy machine gun that does solar damage.
NOPE! I had to do like a half hour of research, skimming through old news articles and shit, before I found what looks to be a fucking gold farmer website confirming that this thing's not available anymore.
Tumblr media
Where are all the wiki people?? I can tell you where they're not! THE WIKI! Yo quick question HEY DESTINY COMMUNITY, BY HOW MUCH DOES THE PUBLIC DEFENDER MOD INCREASE REWARDS FROM PUBLIC EVENTS? NONE OF YOU FUCKIN KNOW, DO YOU?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mod's been part of the game for years but I literally couldn't find an answer to that question. It’s been around since before I started playing years ago! (I don't know exactly when it was introduced because I could not find that information either, ironically.) Whatever, it doesn't matter, or rather it doesn't matter enough to the end game grinds that all the whales are doing.
Hey Warframe Wiki I have a highly specific question about this new sniper rifle, one among hundreds of weapons in this game. It gains a buff after several consecutive headshots. Does it count the headshots separately if you hit more than one with one shot? Do you know the answer, Warframe Wiki?
Tumblr media
oh you've got basically everything i could possibly ever need?
Tumblr media
even though this rifle was released last week. like seriously last week, ACTUALLY LAST WEEK, NOVEMBER FUCKING 30TH, LITERALLY LAST
Tumblr media
WEEK
No wonder Warframe ate your fucking lunch, Destiny. You cretins.
I feel like this speaks to the kind of person Destiny wants to attract. Do you care? Nobody cares. Warframe meanwhile has all the chuunibyous who are extremely invested and passionate and joyful. Warframe sucks and I hate almost everything about it despite my three thousand hours of playtime in it, that's another long series of rants, but the playerbase at large actually give a shit about helping each other and making the game as fun as it can be for everyone else. There's something terribly selfish and apathetic about the way Destiny players consume content, and I think I know why that is. It's because Destiny rewards selfish behavior.
THERE’S NO I IN TEAM, AND THERE’S NO U IN IT EITHER
Competition is everywhere. First of all, out of the basic daily grinds available at the tower, ONE is Co-op, and THREE are PvP. So, that says something. Also, certain quests require you to get kills against players, so PvP is forced (Hey go fuck yourself Malfeasance). I absolutely fucking hate this. But more than just having a really big PvP focus in terms of game modes, competition is built into the fabric of the basic gameplay. There's actually almost no cooperation at all. You CAN cooperate, but the mechanics don't actually incentivize it. In most cases, they discourage it.
Tumblr media
The vast majority of daily quests take the form of "Get certain number of kills with X" such as with a specific weapon type, damage type, with grenades, melee, headshot kills, stuff like that. There are also a bunch of skills and perks and armor mods that work off kills, like spawning orbs of light or elemental wells on kill, weapons that gain temporary buffs on kill, etc. But the thing is, "on kill" only works when YOU get the final blow, which means when you have three players together doing the same activity, they're competing with each other for getting the last hit on enemies, whether it's for gun calibration bounties or just because it makes your gun reload faster.
You can revive teammates when they go down, but you hardly have to. It's not like the enemies are dangerous enough that you really need three guns to handle them. In most places there's only a five second wait before someone can revive themselves. Even when it increases that time it's still only up to about thirty seconds, and in higher difficulties there are even mechanics that PREVENT you from reviving teammates. Because cooperation? This sucks.
Tumblr media
Compare to Warframe again, Warframe builds a lot of mechanics really haphazardly, but they still somehow manage to make reviving teammates a basically desirable thing to do, and there are a lot of area buff abilities on certain frames. They all have pretty big areas, which is useful since warframes jump around a lot and are really fast. There are also tons of enemies, even infinite enemies in many cases, so getting 150 kills with Magnetic Damage or whatever is pretty chill no matter how many people you're playing with, unless one of them is Volt and he's doing that constantly zap everybody in a six mile radius build.
Compare to Vermintide, a REAL co-op game, where the entire thing is built around cooperation. Special enemies can disable players who are by themselves which makes staying with the team necessary for survival. Enemies are uniformly potentially dangerous and they come from any direction. The characters talk to each other and have fun banter. AND there are lots of big area buff abilities.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in Destiny 2's main co-op modes players are constantly at odds with each other. There's not even a penalty for running ahead and leaving your teammates behind. In fact, the game will teleport THEM to YOU if you go too far ahead. There's a healing grenade which I don't think I've ever seen used even once. Warlocks can drop healing wells, but they're small and don't make a big fuss so allies may not see you do it, and even if they did it's on them to come and get the buff, not on the warlock to put the buff near their allies. Titans can make barricades but you can't shoot through them so most of the time they just get in your way because it wasn't you who dropped it so you weren't expecting it. It's all selfish design.
To some extent this is because the game is balanced to be playable solo, which is fine; solo shooters like Halo are in Bungie's blood. But then Strikes in Destiny put you in teams ANYWAY, and the mechanics aren't ready for it. Selfish behavior is rewarded constantly, and cooperative behavior isn't, so the playerbase is subtly nudged towards being selfish and apathetic. I think this is why nobody bothers to make comprehensive wikis with detailed information.
But here's where it comes back around to being about money.
Tumblr media
BRING YOUR FRIENDS, BUNGIE WANTS THEIR MONEY TOO
Strikes and open world stuff forces you into playing next to other people when you don't want them and constantly remind you how much nicer this would be if you had friends to play with, but the hardest endgame content, Raids and Dungeons, DON'T. They don't merely suggest, they FORCE you to beg your friends to play Destiny with you.
One might try to argue no no no no this is about building a community, people are encouraged to actually talk to each other like human beings. Kay first of all if you want that shit so bad why are the other things all done with matchmaking then? Second of all the way I know they really desperately want new people to be able to get to Raids and Dungeons as fast as possible is because they fucking told me so.
Tumblr media
Oops, tipped your hand there didn't you, Bungie! Behold the Gift of the Thunder Gods Treasure Chest, with its big quest marker pointing you to it. Inside they just give away for free an ENTIRE GEAR SET of Almost top level equipment, all with exactly the power requirement to do Raids and Dungeons. Most armor pieces you find lying around have an attribute total between 49 and 55, but these ALL have a nice solid 60, plus a set of three weapons, two of which are decent, and the third being THE THUNDERLORD, an extremely powerful heavy machine gun that occasionally causes giant lightning strikes. Progression? Difficulty curve? Tutorials? Story campaign? Fuck all that shit. Join up and immediately go help your whale friends do Deep Stone Crypt. Oh can't do Deep Stone Crypt because it requires the Beyond Light expansion? Don't worry, they bought it for you. How nice of them.
Thank Christ that shit finally got taken out like a few hours ago. I’m sure they’ll replace it with something similar any moment now. Or maybe they’ll wait a few months until the next season or something. I seem to remember they did something like this around the time I started playing way back; suddenly bumping everybody’s gear up to a certain power level so that new players don’t have to get used to the game before they’re roped into doing stuff.
Tumblr media
I think this is intentional. I think Raids and Dungeons don't have matchmaking because they want to select for the people who are invested enough in the game to want to play "late game" content, and then give those a challenge that requires them to actually find people to play with, specifically so that they will go and find more people to play Destiny 2. They want all the activities to be accessible at any time because they want to maximize the amount of stuff that a new player might be roped into doing by a friend who plays a lot. They certainly don't do that for the new consumer's sake, because throwing all this shit at new players is confusing and overwhelming, not to mention makes no sense from a storytelling perspective.
ALL the grinds are long, but the late game grind for millimetric power increases and trying to get exactly the right combination of random perks or exactly the right stats on your armor is ESPECIALLY long, but more over it's EXPENSIVE, because the very best top of the ladder equipment is all price locked in expansions or seasons. Remember that solar machine gun I wanted? Are there any other solar machine guns in the entire game? Only one. It's in this dungeon, which requires the Witch Queen expansion. So basically players like me can get fucked. I find this to be horrifyingly insidious game design.
Tumblr media
Even more insidious though is Rank Streaks. Doing these main activities earns you rank points, and you get Streaks if you play them consecutively, which increases how many rank points you get. If you go do some other activity, your streak is broken and it resets. In other words, you are rewarded for doing the same thing over and over. This is one of the worst ideas I've ever seen. It's certainly a really strong incentive to make people do the same thing over and over again, but why do you WANT people to do that? Why do you PUNISH people for wanting to do multiple activities for the variety? Is this somehow not completely backwards? Is this somehow not incredibly anti-consumer? Is this somehow not extremely toxic to the players? Especially new players, holy shit. Like fine whatever, cater to your fucking mouthbreather whales. Maybe you have enough of the dumb fucks to keep you afloat even if everybody else hates you, but your godawful community of directionless morons would be a lot healthier if you got more people to play with them. It's almost like going outside. And streaks are shared across all your characters, so you can't even have one character who does the PvP shit and another character who does Strikes. As if encouraging you to get bored of content as fast as possible wasn't dumb enough, it also forces you to mainline things you hate if you want the rewards. Not only am I forced to do Crucible and Gambit if I want the Ascendant Shards or whatever, I can't even take breaks from them because if I do I'll get punished with Even More Crucible and Gambit.
Tumblr media
But like I said. This is selecting for a very specific type of whale. People who want variety and fun and companionship, they don't give a shit about those people. They want the people who REALLY want to get the Best Loot and want it as Fast As Possible. They want players who will do ALL the long grinds, and will pay Bungie money to let them do it faster.
And here's my last piece of damning evidence: Vaulting. Vaulting is one of the worst decisions I've ever seen a game make.
Remember what I said at the beginning about FOMO? Vaulting is how you give your entire playerbase the Fear of Missing Out, about everything, all at once, forever. Fortunately they may not ever do it again since EVERYONE hated it, except for the hardest of hardcore PvP Assholes who never do anything but crucible. THEY didn't lose shit, obviously. They even get to keep the crucible maps set on Titan and Mercury and all those other places I liked but will never see again. Fuckers.
But here's why Vaulting is so sinister. Even if they never do it again, the THREAT still looms over every part of the game now. This part of the game that you really like? This gun, or world, or mission type, or ability, or character? Guess what, it might just fucking vanish someday! Isn’t that awesome!? And we’re gonna replace it with the Cosmodrome! Or maybe with NOTHING!
Tumblr media
So if you want the shiny thing you'd better get it RIGHT NOW, RIGHT FUCKING NOW, GET AS MANY PEOPLE TO PLAY WITH YOU AS YOU CAN SO YOU CAN GET THE THING BEFORE WE TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU FOREVER! Oh and you'll need the season pass and the latest expansion to get most of it give us cash.
Destiny players are driven by terror like they're the fucking Black Dog Knights.
Except me, because giving up on things is my specialty. As soon as Darktide gets polished enough to run properly on my computer I'm dropping this shit and its fat fucking hundred gig ass like it was endorsed by Trump.
EDIT: I got back into playing Hades. Hades is a fantastic game. Bye, Destiny 2!

Full disclosure, this is a long one. It's also a vent post. I'm mainly writing this out to help get the thoughts and feelings regarding this kind of organized and out of my head, makes dealing with them just a little easier. Maybe it'll help you put to words your own thoughts & feelings on this kinda shit, too, and if it does, I'm glad my screaming into the void at least helped out someone other than myself! After all, if anything I say, write, or do ends up helping at least one other person, then maybe I'm doing something right :]
Sometimes having long-time special interests in an ongoing franchise FUCKING SUCKS. Perfect example - I am both a big Halo nerd, and really enjoy the overaching lore of Bungie's connected worlds (with how Marathon, Pathways into Darkness, Myth, Destiny, and even the ways Halo originally connected before it had to become its own thing thanks to Microsoft). Here are the ways that currently sucks:
The state of Halo Infinite, the most recent Halo game, both currently and at launch. At launch, you had a buggy mess, with multiplayer that barely functioned, lacking feature parity (even just on the multiplayer side of things, not counting the campaign) with Halo Reach, a game from 2010. Currently, 343i has admittedly fixed a lot of the launch issues - there's more customization than the game has ever had before (still not as good as Reach's customization imo, but at this point I've given up hope on any multiplayer AAA game having that level of customization for free ever again), the desync issues (in my experience) are no longer happening, and it has the most powerful Forge mode in any Halo game to date. The flip side of that, though? Egregiously horrendous monetization, an armor core and coating system that both hurt the customization more than help, and a drip-feed of content with little to no communication from 343 on anything past the most recent update. Not to mention the issues that come from a focus on "Live Service" bullshit.
The issues at 343 Industries itself, which come part and parcel with the massive issues related to Microsoft as a company. Massive megacorporation, horrible management, staff getting screwed over, crunch culture, and more - it just goes on and on.
Halo 5, despite its generally negative reception, is horrendously inaccessible to those of us that want to experience it as a piece of history and/or try out the multiplayer. A perfect example of how little companies care about game preservation, despite the decent track record 343i has had in that respect thanks to the Master Chief Collection, its PC release and addition of Halo Reach, and the efforts to find, occasionally recreate from almost nothing, and implement lost & cut content in the MCC titles.
Being a fan of Bungie's overarching stuff... really bad when you are at PEAK investment into their stuff, namely my Destiny 2 hyperfixation, and they not only announce that their new Marathon game is going to be a fucking EXTRACTION SHOOTER, and thus unlikely to have one of the most interesting things about Marathon in it (that being its lore) while also being very hard to get into thanks to people treating that kind of game as a massive sweat-fest, but also suddenly lay off a bunch of employees (when previously they had a good track record of treating employees decently...) due to Square Enix levels of profit overestimations of Lightfall, the BEST SELLING DESTINY EXPANSION EVER only getting 45% of the expected sales. Because why be realistic, right? Just fuck over employees, that certainly won't hurt us in the end!
The fact that, despite ALL OF THIS and my moral convictions against the shitty nature of this stuff, my dumbass brain still wants me to just spend spend spend on it anyway because of how much of a special interest Halo & the Bungie lore are to me - it almost hurts. I generally prefer fantasy stuff, but I can't stop myself from loving the lore and stories associated with this stuff. I have to fight myself every goddamn time I have money to not fall into the traps. It's easier with Destiny - I uninstalled it, replaced my PvE needs with Warframe and Risk of Rain 2, replaced my PvP needs with Halo Infinite, and just keep up with the story from a distance. But now that Halo Infinite is back in my life? I love the gameplay, hell I'd go as far as to say it has some of the strongest gameplay in the series (though some modes could use a bit more work, for example the Infection mode just isn't as fun as the Infection from Halo Reach), but the monetization just... AAAARGH it hurts me that I want to spend on it, both for customization and to have little goals to work towards in the (thankfully well-implemented due to them being available eternally) battle passes.
I just want to be able to love something that's been so central to me for so long - I played a cracked version of the CE PC demo for countless hours growing up, to the point that to this day I know the mission Silent Cartographer back to front from memory & could do it in my sleep, and associate Blood Gulch with countless memories of Halo's multiplayer from how often I'd play it with my sister, and to add onto all of that Halo Reach is one of my favorite games ever made, period - without caveats and moral hangups. I just want to love something without justifying it every time I think of it, both to myself and others.
I know this is a massively first-world issue, having the luxury to whine about my Favorite Things going through years and years of getting fucked by their own successes driving them into corporatism, but it still sucks. Obviously not as much as other issues both myself and others deal with, and DEFINITELY not as much as the horrible shit people are enduring in several parts of the world, but just enough for me to want/need to vent about how much corporations like to shit on the little rays of sunshine that we use to feel better about life.
#vent post#halo#halo infinite#marathon#pathways into darkness#myth the fallen lords#destiny 2#corporate bullshit#fuck corpos#just let me have nice things in peace goddammit#why does everything have to be fucked with SO MUCH over time#I just want comfort games I don't have to think about the real-world bullshit of too much#but unfortunately my brain landed on options that#while not the WORST by any stretch of the imagination#I mean just LOOK at the state of CoD Battlefield and just...#EVERYTHING that was touched by the Shitty Wizard Franchise#which I only mention due to how many people I've known who had to find a completely new comfort media after JKR proved herself to be a TERF#it still sucks that it's nearly impossible to find something that isn't either problematic or actively getting enshittified#at least in my favorite genres#namely FPS games (both modern and retro) and Metroidvanias#and while the latter isn't too bad#the former just gets infested with so much assholery and corpo fuckery that#you either have to play an indie game made by one person who could turn out shit at any time and that is so niche there's no multiplayer#or just deal with the shittiness involved with getting too attached to a franchise owned and produced by a megacorporation#and unfortunately I got attached to one of the latter from a young age so#at least I can feel a little better now that I've kinda gotten the bulk of my thoughts about it off of my chest#which I honestly REALLY needed to do#so that's good at least

god being a destiny 2 player kinda sucks rn, sorry to my d2 moots for being a downer but holy shit. like. the rot is just everywhere and bungie feel like theyre going to double down
when was the last time we got a fully new weapon? cuz all the weapons from the past seasons, dungeons and even lightfall have been reskins of previous weapons and thats rlly a sticking point for me.
Plus like the story backflipped into the trashcan so fucking hard first with lightfall and then with FRIDGING amanda. FUCKING FRIDGING after that article about "the fight for the studio's soul" where they sey they fought to make sure the female characters where presented in a respectful manner. this feels like a sick joke and im struggling to care anymore.
i just wanna be excited about this game again fuck

It GENUINELY angers me what Bungie is doing right now, especially with Destiny 2. I fucking love that game, I have and kinda still do. I played it since it was free for a weekend on Battlenet. I've been addicted to it for the longest time, even though it makes me upset sometimes. But it's gotten to a point where it's no longer fun, at all. It's just unbearable to play, to the point that even I can't copium my way into pressing 'play' anymore. Not to mention the fact that Bungie is just being a shitty company to begin with. Ruining their playerbase, removing all the shit we payed for, firing employees and then blaming the playerbase that you don't listen to? That's bullshit. They refuse to do what the people who play their game want them to do. They cater to the 0.01% of streamers and people at Bungie that they seem to care about and ignore literally everyone else that actually has the games best interest in mind, and not "I sure do think this would make for a good vod" I've uninstalled the game awhile ago and have honestly noticed my mental health improving. Yeah, unironically. I feel genuinely better not trying to justify playing Destiny 2. Because as much as it hurts to say, the game sucks. It's a bad game now. I has potential to be good again, it used to be great, but right now it sucks. It is genuinely just a bad game. I had some hope for their upcoming game but I've honestly forgot all about it at this point. I doubt it'll even come out. Bungie has officially given up.

so many of the bungie team being let go from what ive heard are creative teams, support teams, accessibility teams, communication teams, both junior and senior roles. n that fucking sucks cause its those aspects where i think bungie has really been innovative and inspiring to me personally and its what separates their games from other studios. its what keeps me enthralled with the destiny universe even though i cant even afford to play the fucking game anymore. among many other reasons (line go up is fucking stupid drivel), if bungie higher ups don't realize how essential these ppl are to making games and stories that stand out and that players connect to, they have no right 2 be heading the company. complete fucking bullshit. im so mad

Crucible TWAB Thoughts
The communication that the Destiny 2 PvP community wanted is finally here! Below are my reactions as I read the TWAB. I love the underlines for "FAIR MATCHES". Because fair, to me, is not me getting farmed by ppl who think their crucible experience (aka winning) is more important than my crucible experience. I like this. Shows what Bungie intends each playlist to be so hopefully they can execute on this for all players.
Tumblr media
I'm interested in the Quick Play 6v6 for sure & I like that it's clash & control! Also interested in the new Comp! I will not play the weekly rotator unless it's for a seasonal challenge & I'm not interested in crucible labs because I am not interested in modes without SBMM
Tumblr media
Trials is a maybe for me leaning towards a probably not. The rewards will have to be worth it. IB this season & last has been horrible for players like me. I will try it and see. The SBMM in it has me interested despite many of my friends hating it. IB is always better w/friends
Tumblr media
Oooo a new Crucible seal. You have my attention! Shaxx focusing. Nice. Earn then focus is fair IMO IRON BANNER FORTRESS SOUNDS FUCKING AWESOME!!!! Iron Banner armor. Why do hunters get the cool shit and Warlocks get shafted? Man our armor sucks compared to hunters.
OMG I think Bungie saw my high tweet with how I solved SBMM because shit...this sure sounds like what my high brain was trying to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quickplay gets its own quitter penalty tracker. Good. Removal of the flawless pool. Interesting roll back. Not sure I like this but then again, the card resetters are the reason I'm currently not interested in Trials. So we shall see how this goes.
I love this description of Ranked for Comp. I hope I get to spend a bunch of time there. We'll see how grindy the seasonal PvE is. But I'm interested for sure!!
TBH, I'm interested in what my actual rank is. I know it's gonna be low but I wanna know!
Will the ranks be account wide or by character? I play significantly better on my warlock than on my titan. I LOVE THIS!!
Tumblr media
OMG and Rose is back. Great TWAB! Great changes! I am going to avoid reading shit on Twitter because I don't want the negative Nancy PvP ppl to shit all over what I am excited for!

Look yes objectively Destiny 2 is not a good game. But I got it for free and you can load it and immediately just jump in and shoot stuff and when I don't want to commit to an RPG sometimes I just like shooting things. And I'll give credit where credit's due, outside of dumb tuning/balance stuff, Bungie makes an amazingly crisp and fluid shooter that actually feels fun just to "play."
All that being said, their new season is basically 1970s French Sci Fi space pirates vibes and it's fucking great. Really wish we'd get fun colorful sci fi again. Valerian whatever had some gorgeous visuals but the plot and acting was awful. But I get to try and make my guy a space pirate captain as much as I can in a world where my human-brain-converted-to-a-robot-and-is-now-a-magic-slinging-space-battlemage/magicknight can't wear a headband and rock a killer mustache holding a Jody Samson looking sabre.
Also I cannot actually recommend Flash Gordon nor Ice Pirates save to say I enjoy them as very guilty pleasures and love the aesthetics (first 2 are game shots including aforementioned battlemage in what I will probably wear for the season, last one is basically the pinnacle of human aesthetics)

The I played the campaign during a free weekend, didn't like the writing or lore at all, and when I later got it when it went free to play and it jumped me past being able to ease back into it and shoved me into a max-level character, I realized that max level gameplay sucks. It's got strong art design on everything except the player characters, but that's all it has going for it

The year is 2021
Destiny 3 has launched. The economy is in ruins. Guardians are running around scraping Masterwork Cores off of the floor to infuse their armour to a higher light level because Zavala has insisted that it’s too dangerous to leave the city. Deep in the bowels of the city, a resistance is forming to take back all of the Masterwork Cores taken from us. Leading the charge, is Cayde-6, who faked his death in the Prison of Elders because he knew that these dark days would come. It’s the apocalypse, and in the stillness of night, you hear Shaxx yelling about how Guardians are dropping like flies in the Crucible because their light level is as pathetic as my pinkie toe.

An odd amount of people are praising the epilogue to the Season of the Splicer in Destiny 2 and I’m sitting here like: “Did y’all play a different epilogue from me, cause honestly this was kind of a big letdown.”
Like sure the cutscene was neat I guess, always happy to see a cutscene, but there wasn’t really anything to it? It was yet another generic Override mission just in a new map, and when it was over we talk to a few people and then that’s it. At least in the last season, Season of the Chosen, the finale to the season had us essentially doing a strike mission to hunt down the traitors that tried to assassinate Zavala, which was different from the standard Battlegrounds missions introduced in that season. In this season we had those Vex Network levels that I feel like they should’ve at least made another one for this epilogue or something. It wouldn’t have made a whole lot of sense to go into the Vex Network anymore since we’d (apparently) defeated Quria, but it didn’t make any sense to do another Override mission yet we still did that so clearly they weren’t thinking about what made sense. I just think last season was better overall.
The weirdest part to me too is that you don’t even talk to Mithrax? Like he was such a pivotal role in this entire season and you establish such a personal relationship with him, so it’s really weird that not once in the epilogue are you tasked with talking to him, before or after. My guess is that they thought talking to Saint and Ikora was too much, but arguably I think it would’ve made more sense to skip Saint altogether and have us talk to Mithrax and Ikora. I get that they wanted to really hit home the fact that Saint is completely pro-Elliskni now but I feel like that message was abundantly clear to anyone who’s played up to this point, it could’ve been skipped.
Also I’m kind of baffled by the decision to have all of the Factions just get up and leave the City? That seems really fucking weird. The only culpable faction was Future War Cult, and even Ikora says that not all of them were culpable, but it makes even less sense that the others would leave too. This felt like a weird wrap up moment where Bungie decided that they have no more need for the Factions in the overall narrative anymore so they’re just gone now.
And of course the Osiris bit we’d all been expecting since the leaked Lore Book happened where he just dips in the middle of battle and leaves the City. This too was handled incredibly poorly IMO. I mean I understand that no one but us canonically has access to the Lore Books, but even without those, Osiris has been acting sus all year, not just this season, and yet no one suspects a fucking thing is going on with him? He’s even fucking named as the cause of this final battle and yet Ikora waves this fact away like it wasn’t actually his fault. It’s just fucking weird. I get that they’re saving him, probably for Witch Queen, but I think it would’ve been better had it ended with the Vanguard officially putting Osiris on notice or something. Officially declare him a wanted criminal for the crimes of aiding Laksmhi in letting the Vex into the City. You can still have Ikora act all upset by it, hell you could even have her disagree with that decision. Say it was all Zavala’s idea and that she thinks he’s jumping the gun or w/e. I don’t know, I just thought that whole bit was handled poorly.
Anyways, I’m probably going to end this season on 96, which sucks but I really don’t feel like touching it anymore. I logged in just to do the epilogue and then logged back out. I hope next season is better. I’m crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath that the rumours are true and it’s a whole season related to the 15th Wish in the Dreaming City. I feel like that would perfectly lead into the Witch Queen expansion whenever that comes out early next year.

well thats a fucking lie.
to be clear there is nothing wrong with this post. it's a lovely post. but "based on your likes" is blatantly untrue. I barely ever see anything related to destiny on my dash. even the people i know whove played it have not been talking about it on this platform recently. there aren't destiny posts in my likes.
the reason i am being shown this post is because i just created a bungie account less than 12 hours ago that uses the same email as my tumblr account, and they have added "destiny 2 player" to the accumulated advertising profile built around my online identity.
this dystopia fucking sucks

At this point in Destiny’s timeline, it’s not the issues or the developers driving me away from the game, it’s the base community. I’ll tell you blatantly and honestly that I could play a game endlessly even if the game has glitches, issues, and stopgaps. I could play a game for months without getting bored even if it lacks content or difficulty. But I WILL put down a game if the community is helping destroy its playerbase. Im not going to tell people how to live their lives, but it’s getting harder and harder to pick up Destiny 2 purely because all I hear from players is toxic negativity and constant insult barraging aimed at the developers. We are in a quarantine. Regardless of the situation, it’s much more difficult for Bungie to be able to put out content in this state of living. They can’t be as on top of things due to the downsides of being in this situation and even with that in mind, they are doing THE BEST THEY CAN. All that aside, all I hear nowadays is how much the game sucks and the only people I play are those SAME people using or doing account recoveries, shoving people out of playlists due to their lack of interest or patience in improving at the game like the rest of us. I get hate mail regularly from people taking this game too seriously and playing at sweat level EVERY SINGLE GAME in the CLASSIC MIX playlist because heaven forbid they lose a game and I’m using a WISH ENDER AND A SUBMACHINE GUN. My signature loadout since Forsaken. It’s exhausting to deal with the community at this point because all I hear is trash talk about every aspect of the game. Even the streamers who I have watched on a regular basis since D2’s launch have become so Debbie Downer that it’s just mentally taxing to watch any of them at this point. I LOVE DESTINY 2. SO MUCH. I’ve always loved it and I still love it. Frankly, I have enjoyed every expansion thoroughly since Taken King. The only expansion that left me feeling mildly inconvenienced since then was Warmind and that was ONLY because there were only 4 weapons in the meta for PvP and it made out for an incredibly laney play style. I even enjoy this expansion and I genuinely cannot thank the @bungieteam enough for continually putting out updates to this game that I have sunk 7476 hours (not even kidding you) into playing for the last 3 years.
Destiny Community, get your fucking act together. Stop acting like you are owed something. If you don’t like the game, find a different game. I have literally hundreds of other recommendations for games you can switch to. Stop harassing the devs because YOUR wishes weren’t met. Stop bitching about a shotgun that you have to wait another 3 days to earn so you can immediately start bitching about it for the next 4 months. Stop asking for constant content in the middle of a quarantine where even a good portion of regular businesses have closed down. Let us enjoy a game for goddamn once. Stop ranting and raving at us who just play because it’s a great game and stop asking the rest of us to sympathize with your cause to try and align the game’s sandbox and content to suit your personal needs. Stop attacking the devs. Stop acting victimized. Stop acting privileged. Stop acting toxic. I will not be answering derogatory or argumentative comments on this post. This post is purely opinion/rant-based, but if the community doesn’t chill out, we are ALL gonna be paying for it in the future. Stop wearing out Bungie’s mental health. I love them all dearly and I want to see what other cool ideas they can come up with.
