STEVE THOMPSON’S DAVID WOLKOWSKY
STEVE THOMPSON’S DAVID WOLKOWSKY - https://keywestlou.com/steve-thompsons-david-wolkowsky/I have said and written many times over the years that the Key West of today would not exist were it not for David Wolkowsky. I doubt any would disagree. Steve Thompson's recent batch of writings makes mention of David. Steve and Cindy knew David way back when and until David's passing a few years ago. Steve wrote.....I pulled into the Pier House at 4 am in '73. I was tired and I could hardly see. A guy named David was working the front desk. I told him a single room. I just needed some rest. He said $42 was as low as he could go.. I thought he sounded snobby. I said no. He said ok, I have a room for $25 a night. I told him that would work, it sounded right. I found out later he wasn't a snob, he just sounded like one. And the odds he would lose a customer at that hour was not acceptable to him. David Wolkowsky was an architect, a hotelier, and an entrepreneur. He never slowed down. He was always in high gear. David had a private island called Ballast Key. He gave it to us for the weekend for our 10th anniversary. In 1990, he had a penthouse above Margaritaville on Duval. He said Cindy was there to help whenever he would call. David played a big part in the Key West building boom. Buildings all over the island. The most important, the Chart Room. Leaving Steve and David, we move on to teachers in the Florida school system today. A despicable situation exists. Florida schools opened this month. Short 4,000 teachers. Two reasons. The first are salaries. Starting salary is $44,040. Average salary is $51,009. The average salary especially shocking when one is aware the living wage in Florida is $49,625. The other problem is the DeSantis inspired political atmosphere. School boards and teachers are constantly under attack. A Mickey Mantle baseball card is under auction. It is anticipated the card could bring $10 million. It is in mint condition. If it does sell for $10 million, it would be the most expensive card sold to date. The auction ends 8/27. The most recent bid $6.5 million. My father was a baseball card collector and trader. He had 4 shoe boxes full of cards. As he got older, he was trading with grammar and high school kids. Never for money. Pure card for card trading. Dad died at 98. He gave up the trading in his 70's. He gave his entire co0llectoion to one of the young boys he had been trading with. we are all aware art is generally auctioned. Rare written documents also. A rare original copy of the  United States Constitution was sold last year at auction for $43 million. "Rare" means more than one copy exists. it is believed a dozen copies of the Constitution exist. Russia is failing in the war against Ukraine. An excuse was given yesterday as to why: "We're failing on purpose!" The Kremlin's military chief admitted Russia has "slowed" its war with Ukraine, but claims it's all part of a "kind hearted plan." The reason: To avoid civilian casualties which he said was slowing down their progress. Bullshit! Typical of authoritarians and authoritarian regimes. They all lie. The facts speak for themselves. Putin has bombed a maternity hospital, playgrounds, theaters clearly marked as safeguarding children, apartment buildings, a shopping mall, etc. Busy morning. Doctor appointment and visit with Lori for a haircut. Enjoy your day!

Treasures abound at Florida’s Dry Tortugas National Park
Treasures abound at Florida’s Dry Tortugas National Park
The seaplane kissed the water as we landed at Dry Tortugas National Park, one of our country’s most inaccessible national parks. It had been a smooth flight from Key West, where we had departed a mere thirty-five minutes ago, and the sights en route were incredible. Opting for the seaplane to Dry Tortugas was a no brainer for me, as the only other means of getting there is the ferry, which…

Anxiety and depression have spiked among Canadians: survey
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/anxiety-and-depression-have-spiked-among-canadians-survey/
Anxiety and depression have spiked among Canadians: survey
TORONTO — The number of Canadians who say they’re experiencing high levels of anxiety has quadrupled since the pandemic began last month, according to a new survey.
The report’s initial findings, announced Thursday by Mental Health Research Canada, asked 1,803 people about the state of their mental health and found that feelings of anxiety and depression are steadily rising.
Before COVID-19, 5 per cent of Canadians reported high-to-extreme levels of anxiety. Five weeks later, that number has multiplied to 20 per cent. Self-reported cases of depression have more than doubled, from 4 per cent to 10 per cent.
Dr. David Dozois, a psychology professor at Western University who helped design the survey, called the findings “alarming” and said what jumped out for him was the fact that, when asked what they expect if social isolation continues for another two months, respondents generally anticipate anxiety levels to remain the same but for depression to worsen.
“People are expecting that, given a couple more months of social isolation, anxiety will morph into depression,” Dozois told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview on Thursday.
Those results aren’t entirely surprising, Dozois said. Anxiety is related to feelings of threats and impending doom, whereas depression focuses on feelings such as hopelessness and failure. If Canadians remain housebound into the summer, Dozois said, it’s natural to expect higher instances of depression.
The survey also asked participants about what specific factors were weighing on their mental health. Respondents cited concerns over a family member becoming infected with the coronavirus, job losses and economic anxiety.
Anxiety also appears to be worsening among health-care workers, with 43 per cent feeling a high level of anxiety since the pandemic began, compared with 14 per cent before.
Younger Canadians are more likely to report feelings of heightened anxiety, the survey found. Forty-three per cent of those aged 18 to 34 reported higher anxiety, compared with 27 per cent of those aged 55 and older. Those with children at home were 41 per cent more likely to report feelings of anxiety.
The new pressure of working from home may also increase anxiety, with 24 per cent of respondents who work from home indicating that it had a negative impact on their mental health.
However, Dozois cautions that, at this stage, it’s difficult to differentiate whether working from home or the new state of life under COVID-19 is the source of those feelings.
“The difficulty of working from home is people are having to do everything differently. Everything is an added stress,” he said. “There are a lot of stressors and hassles with that adjustment.”
CTVNews.ca had asked the federal government for updated statistics on visits to the federal government’s mental health portal.
In response, Health Canada spokesperson David Wolkowski said that as of April 21, 70,000 Canadians had visited the portal.
The new survey, which will be released in full next week, aims to offer firm data on how COVID-19 has altered the inner lives of Canadians. Some mental health experts have predicted an “echo pandemic” once lockdowns end.
Dozois agrees that new cases of anxiety and depression won’t simply disappear once society begins to reopen.
“I’m hopeful. I hope to see that we’ll be more aware of mental health issues and support each other more … but I think the vulnerable will be more vulnerable, and I really do think we need to watch out for each other.”
For anyone grappling with feelings of anxiety or depression, Dozois has some advice.
Validate your feelings: “It’s never helpful for people to say to you, ‘don’t worry about it, try not to worry.’”
Take breaks from reading or watching the news: “Watch half an hour of news or check the web, and then get on with other things.”
Don’t make COVID-19 the central topic of conversations: “You have to be really deliberate to talk about other things that make your life more satisfying.”
Restrict your worrying time to a certain time of day: “So rather than have all these COVID-19 worries run through your mind all day long, allow yourself to concentrate that to a smaller period of time. So when you have a thought that relates to COVID-19, you can say, I’m not going to deal with that right now, I’m going to say that for worry time.”
The new survey is part of a larger project that aims to provide high-quality mental health data to stakeholders, such as governments and service providers. Mental Health Research Canada plans to conduct follow-up surveys every four to eight weeks to track the state of Canadians’ mental health during the pandemic.

I’m headed to the home of a man whose name every local knows: David Wolkowsky. When I reach his house, Wolkowsky tells me he returned home to Key West 56 years ago, in 1962. “It was literally a village. It was still like that,” he says, pointing to a large photograph of men clad in U.S.

JOHN McCAIN…..A TRUE AMERICAN HERO
JOHN McCAIN…..A TRUE AMERICAN HERO - https://keywestlou.com/john-mccain-a-true-american-hero-2/Stayed tuned Key West Lou will be back soon! Until then enjoy this post.   Originally posted August 2018   John McCain died yesterday. A true American hero. A man for the ages. A person to be emulated. He will forever be remembered. We need more John McCain’s. David Wolkowsky’s 99th birthday party! As expected, over the top. Champagne flowed. David and champagne go together. A wonderful man. An American hero in his own right. His successes in Key West and Philadelphia speak for themselves. As I raised my glass to David, I thought…..Next year! Hope you make 100 my friend! I was invited to Donna and Terri’s for dinner. Was running early. Stopped at the Blue Macaw first for a drink. There was Terri at the bar sipping a ginger ale. Donna and Terri live across the street from Blue Macaw. I joined Terri. Enjoyed a drink. Following which she took my right elbow and we went home. We talked about one of Blue Macaw’s bartenders. A tiny lovely young blond lady. Montana her name. People in Key West work hard. As most others in the U.S. do today. Montana has two jobs. Her daytime job begins at 7 in the morning. Not sure what it is. I admire how hard she works. The Macaw bar is huge. She moves around it swiftly. Dinner delicious! What else! Donna cooked. A gourmet chef in disguise. Meat loaf! Like Mom used to make. Outstanding! Bear coming along. Stitches come out Friday. I still hate what they had done to him. Neutered. I am moving my ass this morning. Terri sings at 10 at Hard Rock Cafe. She and Larry Baeder entertain together 10-12. Stop over for brunch and enjoy the duo. I early voted this week. Did not recognize any of the State wide candidates, except for Gwen Graham. Gwen is running in the Democratic primary for Governor. One of the reasons I did not know the candidates is that the Key West Citizen rarely mentions the State races. I received this morning via e-mail a copy of the August 23 edition of Florida Politics. There was a big pic of Gwen and a story involving her and Big Pine. Gwen, her parents, sisters and children were in Big Pine last Sunday. Working with Brian Vest’s Conch Republic Marine Army to clean up debris yet remaining from Irma. Yes, almost a year later much cleanup and repair work yet remains. Gwen’s team had contacted Vest to ask what they could do. He said come on down and help. The candidate and her family came. The pic showed Gwen in shorts and a t-shirt in the water with gloves on pulling debris out of the water. Sweating like a pig as the saying goes. She was working! The title of the article was Gwen Graham Gets Hands On During Cleaning Up Day In The Keys. I make mention for 3 reasons. First, I support Gwen’s candidacy. Second, I and my fellow Key residents appreciate Gwen paying attention to the Keys. We are generally the forgotten relative. Third, the Key West Citizen made no mention of Gwen’s visit. For shame! In fact, very very little of any of the State races have been reported on thus far. Enjoy your Sunday!

A SPECIAL EVENING
Last night, a special evening. I spent it with Christina Oxenberg. Though she has lived in Key West since 2011, we never met before. I wish we had.
The evening began at Guy de Boer’s home. Drinks. Christina indulges in water only. I still trust her, however. Followed by dinner at Antonia’s. Finished the evening with a night cap at the Chart Room.
A writer. She has written a column for KONK Life for a number of years. Published 7 books. Articles printed in Allure and Huffington Post. Owns a knit wear company that sells worldwide.
I have read her KONK life writings.  Superior. Unusual. Mystic. Subtle. You do not know where she is going., the point she wishes to make. Till the end. When it hits between the eyes.
Christina is of royal lineage. For real. Her mother was Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia. Her ancestry includes Serbia’s Karageorge, Greece’s King George I, Russia’s Tsar Alexander II, Russia’s Empress Catherine II, and Great Britain’s King George II.
As we arrived at the Pier House, Christina’s phone rang. It was David Wolkowsky. Christina and David are close friends. Chat on the phone once or twice a day. Visits him frequnetly at his home.
Christina was at David’s 99th birthday party I attended two weeks ago. I did not know her before. Did not meet her that evening. No recollection of have seen her.
I would have missed the boat were it not for last night.
David was thrilled to learn we were going to the Chart Room. He built the Pier House and created the Chart Room many many years ago.
Weather continues to be important. Hurricane season.
I made a mistake yesterday in advising Gordon had hit land off the Gulf as a category 1.  It never reached hurricane status. At the moment, it remains a tropical storm moving 70 mph towards Arkansas.
Typical this time of the year, another is on the way. Florence. No screwing around here. Florence is 1,300 miles east off Bermuda and already a category 4.
Tracking not possible yet. It may turn right and stay in the Atlantic. Or, land somewhere on the east coast. May take 5 days to determine a reliable track. Then a few more days before Florence gets where ever she is going.
Social media taking a beating. Justified and non justified. Facebook millennials concerned. A recent Pew Research Center study indicated 44 percent of Americans 18-27 deleted their Facebook apps so far this year.
The concern leading to the deletions involved Facebook’s repeated failures to protect consumer data. The data that was shared and abused by a myriad of Facebook partners.
Michael Snyder is a nationally syndicated writer. His columns well researched and on point. He recently wrote re the world’s economy.
The world’s economy is on a downward thrust. Washington either is not aware or does not care. We hear nothing about it, other than the economy is good.
The problem at the moment involves 20 countries. Except for China, all emerging nations. During boom years, they all borrowed heavily. A high percentage of the loans denominated in U.S. dollars.
All in trouble economically. China included.  A death spiral has begun. Most will crash. Those having U.S. denominated debt will not be able to make loan payments. U.S. and European banks will not be paid. Losses could be astronomical.
A bubble exists. If matters continue as they are, our economy will take a hell  of a hit. A recession resulting.
Enjoy your day!

TONI TARRACINO SHARES HER LEGACY
Captain Tony is a Key West legend. An icon. Remembered. Revered.
His former bar on Greene Street still bears his name. The bar inside and out as it was in his day.
Toni one of his children. Today, a concierge at the Marriott Beachside. Plus involved in a multitude of other things like marrying people, planning weddings, painting and blog writing.
Her blog is titled Sharing My Key West Legacy. http://tonitarracino.com. One of the best I have read. She has her hands on everything Key West.
I told Toni her material was so good I would be plagiarizing her recollections on occasion.
She wrote of the West Martello Fort. Its history. Today home of the Garden Club and a wedding venue. She mentions the Autograph Tree. Never heard of it. Yet, she knew.
The tree stands at the entrance to the Fort. People have scratched and otherwise written their names and initials on the leaves over the years.
Another story involves the fish sitting on the outside of Capt. Tony’s bar.  Second floor level. People always turning their backs to the fish and trying to throw quarters into its open mouth.
Toni shared the origin of the custom.
As a girl, she helped out at the bar. There actually was a slow season then. The summer. The bar was hot. She and other staff would take benches outside and sit on them. The heat inside too much.
One of those sitting with Toni was a rabid Larry Bird fan. He used to stand, yell “top of the key” and try to throw quarters in the fish’s mouth.
Toni and friends thought it too hot for him to do it as he was. They convinced him to stand on the curb on his toes with his back to the fish. And then try to successfully throw quarters into the fish’s mouth.
A tradition was born. You know the story. A continuing event born out of heat, boredom, and today a bit of alcohol.
My Key West yesterday.
A manicure with Tammy. Business slow. Will pick up next week. Tammy said women like to pretty up for Thanksgiving.
Then a visit with  Dr. Norris. He’s not concerned with what now has been determined to be a ligament or muscle protruding on the left side of my neck. Five inches long. I feared it was my carotid and I was heading for a stroke.
A late lunch at Cuban Coffee Queen. The Queen I was at is in the bowels of Key Lime Square. As is Dr. Norris’ office. I sat looking down the Square towards Southard. It was quiet. Peaceful. Few people. Sun hitting the trees and foliage just right. A relaxing moment.
On the way home, I drove pass David Wolkowsky’s home on Flagler. Someone was working on his Rolls Royce or some ancient roadster. The hood was up. David had two vintage vehicles. Each close to 100 years old.
Last night, Blue Macaw. Enjoyed!
Joe and Andrea back after 2 weeks in Ohio. Good to see them again. Terri singing. Donna at the bar, of course.
More Key West nostalgia.
Some small guys enjoy big ladies. Especially sexually. In 1993, Rocky was out and about. Rocky a 7 pound male Chihuahua. He saw an 80 pound female Rottweiler. One or both in heat. The dirty deed was done. The 80 pound Rott got pregnant.
The Rottweiler’s owners sued. I have no idea what the offspring looked like. In any event, the Rott owners won. The court awarded them $2,567.50.
Pythons have overtaken southern Florida. Actual number unknown. Estimated to be in excess of one million. Cannot be eradicated. Hopefully contained.
The government hires snake hunters. One recently killed the largest ever. A 17 foot 5 inch python weighing 120 pounds. In the Homestead area.
Imagine the beauty wrapping itself around you.
Another problem now out of control are iguanas. The State failed to pay attention. They eat our flowers and defecate in our pools. They are all over the roadways. A danger to driving.
The State has commenced a program to get rid of the iguanas. I hope it is not too late as with the pythons.
Tonight, Syracuse/Connecticut play basketball at 7 in Madison Square Garden. Two former Big East foes. Syracuse ranked #15 nationally. Connecticut not ranked.
I will be home watching the game.
A cold spell coming in. The temperature will be 75 degrees tomorrow. Down from 85 in one day. Most Key Westers will say they love it. I will say I’m cold! Just how it affects me.
Never got to the notes re world events I wanted to share. All less than a week old. Perhaps tomorrow. I got carried away today with Key West items.
Enjoy your day!

A CATASTROPHIC KEY WEST HAPPENING
A catastrophic event has occurred. Smoking no longer permitted in Berlin’s.
New owners. The no smoking rule invoked. Surprising because one of the primary new owners a smoker himself.
Please, do not bury me in e-mails about the evils of smoking. Some remain who enjoy it. A personal choice. I do not criticize those who opt not to smoke.
If second hand smoke is a problem, do not attend a place that permits smoking. Only a few are left in Key West. Many non-smoking restaurants and bars available for the multitude.
Lets me share the Berlin story with you.
Berlin’s full name is Berlin’s Cigar and Cocktail Bar. It has been a place frequented by smokers since 1947 when it was first opened as Alonzo Cothron and Berlin Felton’s Fish House.
Eventually, the name was changed to Alonzo’s and Berlin’s Lobster House. The dining institution of the day. The place for a night out followed by a Cuban cigar. The affluent then hopping a plane for a quick flight to Havana for a night of gambling. Returning in time to bed down while still dark outside.
Those must have been the days!
At some point, the establishment was rebuilt. Always a perfect waterfront site. Class before and class after the rebuilding.
Berlin’s had a cool look to it. The feeling of Rick’s cafe. Some consider the swankiest spot in Key West.
Paul Tripp was owner at the time of rebuilding. He said, “I wanted it to be a men’s club, to have a masculine feel to it.”
It did.
An intimate room. Mahogany walls. Maroon leather bound stools and large comfortable easy chairs. Cigars stored in a humidor. The perfect place to sit back and enjoy a smoke.
The present day Berlin’s has the finest filtration system I have ever experienced. Even if the person next to you was smoking a cigar, you never smelled it. The filtration system sucked up the smoke  immediately. After leaving, your clothes did not smell of smoke.
Smokers generally ate in the intimacy of Berlin’s. A&B Lobster House, the restaurant portion is extremely large with a huge outdoor balcony to accommodate everyone else.
The food at the bar and restaurant the same. Always excellent. Pricey. Worth it, however. Especially when I could enjoy a couple of drinks and cigarettes before dinner and another after dinner while enjoying the last drink of the night.
The change makes no sense. It will not increase business. It might lessen it, if anything.
The Chart Room my only stop last night. John bartending. Ran into Diesel last year. Again, last night. We spoke at length. I enjoyed his company.
Diesel is from Ohio. Retired. He and his wife Lynise bought a home in Key West several years ago. Lynise was not with him. An early to bed person as I am most evenings.
They spend 6 months a year on the island. I told Diesel he was a snowbird. He did not like the title. Preferred to be known as a transient Conch. Don’t think it would fly with the Conchs.
Cori Convertino, how I envy you! Cori was on Ballast Key yesterday!
Cori is technically Dr. Cori Convertino. She is curator at the Custom House. Over the years, she became a close friend of David Wolkowsky. David you will recall died 2 month ago.
David enjoyed 3 homes in the Key West area. One was on Ballast Key. A small island 16 miles west of Key West. A magnificent edifice planned and built by David.
Not sure why Cori was there yesterday. Wish she had invited me. I assume she was there for some reason having to do with the furnishings. David was a huge benefactor to the Custom House.
I met Fritz Adare 12 years ago at a party at Larry and Christine Smith’s home. Nice guy. He was introduced as a personal trainer. Looked it. A magnificent body. Skin like a baby’s back end. A body that sparkled.
It was obvious Fritz was a good health addict.
I rarely saw him. We would run into each other one or two times a year. Always a cordial hello and a few words.
Yesterday’s Facebook listed the day as Fritz’s birthday. I sent him a Happy Birthday!
Last night, Larry and Christine telephoned me. I knew there had to be trouble if both were on the phone together. Fritz had died several months ago. I did not know.
Strange. I never saw his obituary. Looked for it this morning. Not in the Key West Citizen. Found it in a South Bend, Indiana newspaper. Fritz died on May 29. He was residing in an assisted living facility at the time. Age, 71.
May he rest in peace.
When older people who I know pass on, I get a bit nervous. I am 83. Fritz was 71. He unquestionably was a health nut. Always working out. Took all kinds of vitamins and supplement pills. Nutrition was a big thing with him.
I do not dwell on death. Mark Twain said, “Age is not an issue of mind. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
What will be, will be.
An important thing in life. After saturday’s victory, Syracuse is now ranked 14th in the nation. A 7-2 record so far. Go ‘Cuse!
Enjoy your day!

AMERICA LOST
With the final Kavanaugh confirmation vote today, America will have lost. The wrong man elevated. The Supreme Court conservative for the next half century.
I am not going to waste time by going over the facts. They have been seared in all our minds.
A couple of admonitions.
First, a leopard never changes his spots. Known to God and man even back to the Old Testament: “Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots?” Jeremiah 13:23.
The second, what goes around comes around. Kavanaugh will get his. Other damaging matters will come out. Those who supported him will get theirs, also. Look for new faces in Washington. Enough people are disturbed.
Haircut with Lori yesterday. Back to being bald for a few days.
Last night, Blue Macaw. After hellos to Donna and Terri and John and Fiona, spent the evening with Mary and Doug. Interesting people. Mary a tour guide at the Little White House. An expert on Truman. Doug a guide at the Hemingway House. An expert on Hemingway.
We talked of Truman and Hemingway. Condolences offered re my friend David Wolkowsky. Politics consumed most of the evening. We were three unhappy campers re how the Kavanaugh vote had gone and will go today.
A wonderful afternoon ahead. Syracuse/Pitt. Louis in a comfortable easy chair, feet up on an ottoman and the TV set in front of me.
I am especially excited since Syracuse is having a decent season for the first time in 20 years. The spread is 5 points. I think it wrong. Should be 20 or more.
I have been reading How To Win A Fight With A Conservative. Figure I might as well get ready. They are taking over everything.
Interesting tid-bits.
A few shared.
Comedian George Carlin offered…..”Conservatives will do anything for the unborn. But once you’re born, you’re on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don’t want to know about you. No nothing. No prenatal care, no day care, no Head Start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you’re preborn, you’re fine; if you’re preschool, you’re fucked.”
Russ Limbaugh is much like Donald Trump…..”Now, how can I be anti-woman? I even judged the Miss America pageant.”
The Missouri legislature was debating a program that feeds poor children. A Republican State Representative argued against the program. No free food for children. Suggested they should get jobs instead…..”Hunger can be a positive motivator.”
The Divinely inspired Pat Robertson had his say re females…..”The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians.”
And they say Democrats are bad!
Enjoy your day!

EARLY KEY WEST SPEAKEASIES
Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History and Discovery Center. He wrote an interesting article re prohibition and Key West speakeasies in the Key West Weekly 9/27/18.
It was 1928. Prohibition was upon the U.S. Bootleggers were running booze in from larger boats sitting beyond U.S. territorial limits. Some of the illicit alcohol passed through Key West on its way to other parts of the country. Some remained in Key West.
A new type drinking establishment arose. The speakeasy.
Key West had 2 speakeasies early on. Club Florence and the Blind Pig.
Club Florence was located at 1117 Duval St. Today, the Speakeasy Inn. Owner Raul Vasquez named the place Florence because a number of his customers had wives named Florence.
The Blind Pig operated at 428 Greene St. Today, the infamous Captain Tony’s.
The structure was built in 1851. Over the years, served as an ice house and city morgue, wireless telegraph station, cigar factory, and bordello.
The building was owned by Isaac Wolkowsky. David Wolkowsky’s father.
Issac rented the building to Joe Russell during Prohibition for $3 a week. When Prohibition ended, Russell changed the name to Sloppy Joe’s. He would later move the bar to its present location.
Dueling Bartenders first last night. The wonderful Terri Smith guest performer. Joining regulars Tom Luna and Rick Dery. A good crowd. Donna, Andrea and Joe, John and Fiona, the wonderful Liz, Josefina, and Mary among others.
Stopped at Sandy’s Cafe on the way home for a bite. My usual. Cuban cheese toast with tomato and a diet coke. Love the meal! Think it is the cost. $4.39. Can’t beat it.
Shades of Tom Cruise and Ancient Japan last week in Key West. Samurai!
A homeless man threatened 2 different persons early friday morning. With a samurai sword. Ended up being arrested.
I am excited. Tonight, I watch Ally play volley ball for the first time. She is on the Montessori team.
Afterwards, I have to hurry home. My podcast at 9. Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou. Interesting. An eye opener on occasion. Join me for a half hour. Listen to me rant and rave. Guaranteed you will not be disappointed. www.blogtalkradio.com/key-west-lou.
On this day in 1950, Tennessee Williams purchased what was to be his home for some 30 yeas on Duncan St. Only $13,000 back then.
The home remains lovely. Present owners keep it in tip top shape.
Lisa and family live 1 1/2 blocks down the street on Duncan.
One of the most thriving and happiest Key West businesses is on Union just below White. Dairy Queen. On this day in 1951, the Zoning Board approved a zoning change so the Dairy Queen could be built.
For over 60 years, Dairy Queen has successfully operated in the same place. Primarily patronized by locals. School kids and families. Many the time Lisa, Robert, Ally and I would stop and enjoy. Sometimes Louis alone with the grandkids. Small tables outside to sit on. One of the few Key West businesses with more than adequate parking.
We wait for the FBI report. Now expanded. Going to be interesting.
I suspect another governmental investigation is ongoing at the same time. One by the Judicial Conference of the United States. Composed of Federal Judges. Oversees the operation of Federal Courts.
The Judicial Conference at the moment would be operating in secrecy. It has the power to recommend impeachment among other things for criminal malfeasance. It can initiate its investigation on its own based merely on media reports.
Does Kavanaugh qualify for such an investigation? I think so. However, I am not a member of the Judicial Conference.
Got to give the Devil his do. I refer to Trump.
NAFTA was replaced by USMCA yesterday. A better trade agreement.
Trump delivered.
Enjoy your day!

WORLD LEADERS LAUGH AT TRUMP
When Trump was running for President, he frequently said the U.S. needed a President who was not a joke in the eyes of the world: “We need a President who isn’t a laughing stock to the entire world. We need a truly great leader, a genius at strategy and winning.”
World leaders laughed at Trump yesterday. Openly and publicly as he addressed them at the United Nations.
Laughter occurred two times.
First, when Trump said, “In less than 2 years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.”
The laugh from all followed.
The second time involved the German delegation openly laughing when Trump claimed Germany was becoming “totally dependent on Russian energy.”
The man is a buffoon. He makes a mockery not only of our Nation, but each and every one of us. I am sure the thought of other peoples is….. What has happened to the American people?
Nothing like throwing gasoline on a fire. Trump did it with China.
The U.S. and China are in a major trade war. The trade war of all trade wars. To further aggravate China and let them know he was no pussy, Trump authorized a $330 million military sale to Taiwan.
China’s ire obvious. For the time, China merely said that the action jeopardizes Sino-U.S. cooperation.
I fear if the trade war continues tit for tat, what began as a trade war will turn into a military one. You can only push some one or nation around so long.
Our government is degenerating. The Presidency with Trump. Our Congress as it behaves. The Kavanaugh war a perfect example. The Senate is not distinguishing itself.
Civility is a dying art. It is like respect. If you do not give respect, you should not expect it in return.
Most in this country feel they are constantly being defecated upon. By the “elite.” Understandably so. Since the 1980’s, things have gotten decidedly better for important people and worse for everyone else.
Ted Cruz and his wife Heidi were having dinner at the expensive Fiola Restaurant in Washington. A group approached and began heckling the Senator and wanting to know his position on Kavanaugh.
Though I agree with the hecklers, I would not confront the Senator in the fashion they did. Not my way. On the other hand, these people have a right to disturb the Senator as they did. A restaurant interruption is public approbation in a small way. The elite should not be immune from the consequences of their behavior.
The confrontation small. However to be expected by the affluent these days. A people being jerked around will respond in various ways.
I have 2 observations.
First, what was Cruz doing in Washington? He was not required in Washington till thursday for the Kavanaugh hearing. He is in a tight race in Texas for his Senate seat. Democrat Beto O’Rourke is running a neck and neck race against him.
Cruz must be overly confident.
Fiola is one of Washington’s most expensive restaurants. The menu pre-fix. $90-$145. Wine prices off the wall. Not a dinner for two that most can afford.
An Irma update.
Irma occurred more than a year ago. Woeful stories continue to pop up.
A Big Coppitt family lived in a home erected to withstand a category 5 hurricane. Strongest concrete, hurricane proof doors and windows. The family opted to ride out Irma in their home.
The Blue Paper recently revealed a story untold. The category 5 home did not hold up. Irma came into the house.
The family reported the house began to shake. A crash was heard in the children’s bedroom. Two young children were in the bedroom with the door closed.
The door flew open. The young son came out with blood matting his blond hair. His injury required 10-12 stitches. The daughter at first could not be located. Later found unharmed.
The hurricane was in the bedroom. A window and part of a wall gone.
My podcast Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou last night. First talking show I have done in several days. My bronchial condition made it difficult to speak.
I spent half the show talking about David Wolkowsky. My friend, Key West’s friend, who died in his sleep sunday night at 99 years of age. A rare individual.
Enjoy your day!

DAVID WOLKOWSKY'S PIER HOUSE MOTEL AT DUVAL-ON-THE-GULF
The best laid plans of mice and men…..
Last night was to be Captain Tony’s at 8 for his 102nd birthday bash. Thought it would be fun. Locals and tourists combined.
Never made it.
I enjoy researching. Can be a trip! Occasionally, a drudge.
Began researching at 2 yesterday afternoon. I was right into it. It was quickly 7. I was enjoying myself. Decided to skip Captain Tony’s party. I was confident he would not miss me.
I worked till 2 am. Dead this morning.
Tomorrow morning from 10 to noon, Terri White sings! With Larry Baeder at Hard Rock Cafe. Brunch time. Terri will be appearing every sunday morning with Larry.
I plan on having brunch at Hard Rock tomorrow morning. My lady entertains!
David Wolkowsky is responsible for the Key West of today. No one had his vision when he opened the Pier House in 1968. Actually, on this day in 1968.
Called the operation the Pier House Motel-At-Duval-On-The-Gulf. Fifty rooms.
David a person who could see whether others could not. The Duval location was nothing but a mud pit when he decided to develop it.
David has had many accomplishments. One notable is Jimmy Buffett. Buffett will tell you David was the first person in Key West to pay him to sing. In the Pier House Chart Room, of course.
David not yet a 100. He has a ways to go. He will be 99 later this month. I received my invitation to his birthday party yesterday.
Mom’s Tea Room was a popular place back in the 1930’s and 1940’s. A bar with ladies of the night. Even in the day time.  A house of ill repute. A whore house.
If my recollection is correct, she operated at different times at 3 locations. Two in Key West and one on Stock Island. The authorities kept closing her down. The local police were not concerned. The federal government was. The Navy base was large in those days. The Navy did not feel it proper for their men to frequent a place like Mom’s.
On this day in 1941, Mom’s Tea Room was located near Fort Zachery Taylor. The constabularies raided the place. Three of Mom’s ladies were arrested.
Recall the power outage I reported this week. The one that occurred thursday night while I was at the Blue Macaw. The power outage was caused by a sailboat that struck a transmission line at the north end of the Seven Mile Bridge.
Irma beat up the Key West Shipwreck Museum. Located at 1 Whitehead. Recently reopened. The Museum has a 65 foot tower. The view spectacular. The island and Key West Harbor.
The Museum and tower are free to locals through September 30. Take advantage!
The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard are friends. We have lived together since way before World War II.
Friends take care of each other.
This past week, a fishing boat was out 63 miles northwest of Key West. A man on board was thought to have had a heart attack. The Naval Air Station was called. A Coast Guard boat arrived swiftly.
The crew recognized the man required immediate attention. A helicopter was called. The helicopter arrived in 9 minutes.
A medic was lowered from the helicopter. Arranged for the man to be lifted to the helicopter. He was flown to Lower Keys Medical Center. He is in stable condition.
Today and tomorrow tumultuous ones. Our country’s dark side will be exposed. Today, Charlottesville. Tomorrow, Washington, D.C.
Today is the one year anniversary of what could be described as the Charlottesville race riot. A wound opened. Exposed. A President who indicated support for the bad guys. By so doing, blatantly evidencing his racism.
White nationalists were on the march. Persons of color and those supporting them in opposition.
The vermin came out of the woodwork.
White nationalists are pro-white. Supportive of those who have come to America from European countries. They are white. Nazis at heart. Supportive of Hitler and his beliefs. Anti-Semitic.
An advanced U.S. group consists of those with extreme far right leanings. They are known as the alt-right. Whether extreme, all are white supremacists.
They Heil Hitler! Use the Nazi verbiage, Sieg Heil!
Primarily young. Difficult to distinguish or be aware of their political leanings. Your next door neighbor.
They believe white people are a race unto themselves. Whites presently are a majority in the U.S. They want to maintain that majority. They believe non-whites are on a mission of genocide to destroy whites. They seek to protect their own.
They are anti-immigration. Immigration allows additional non-whites to enter the country.
Trump supports them. They support Trump. They are part of the hard-core Republican conservative base that supports Trump.
They claim history supports their position.
The Naturalization Act of 1790 set forth the rules for granting naturalized citizenship. Immigration was limited to those who were “free white persons” of “good moral character.”
The law remained such till the adoption of the 14th Amendment in 1868. Did not blanket cover everyone, however. Granted citizenship only to black people born in the U.S.
The issue as to other non-whites was resolved in U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark in 1898. Allowed for naturalization to be available to everyone.
John C. Calhoun is a respected historical figure. Never the less, he was pro white and anti all other persuasions. He said, “We have never dreamt of incorporating into our Union any but the Caucasian race – the free white race…..Ours, sir, is the Government of a white people.”
I took the time this morning to spell out in some detail the background, etc. re the white nationalists. They are the enemy of our democracy. They seek to change it. By so doing, destroy it.
You will hear much on the media today and tomorrow re Charlottesville and Washington happenings. Our country may bleed a little.
Understand what is going on.
Enjoy your day!

WOLKOWSKY DID IT AGAIN.....NIXON AND TRUMAN AT PIER HOUSE 1969
The father of modern Key West is David Wolkowsky. Ninety eight and still going strong.
David built the Pier House. Its beginnings 1968. Nothing but mud where it presently stands. He started with a 50 unit motel. Called it the Pier House Motel.
David knew everyone. Persons of prominence came to stay at his motel. Two United States Presidents at one time in 1969.
I was at the Chart Room last night. John showed me a photo on his cell phone of the two Presidents and their wives. He had received the photo earlier in the day from Tim. Tim and his wife live with David and assist him with his everyday living.
Seated at a piano playing was Richard Nixon. Standing behind him, Nixon’s wife Pat, Harry Truman and Bess. It appears the picture was taken by David. A note written on the photo said: “To David Wolkowsky. The view at the Pier House-the greatest.” Signed: “Richard Nixon.”
A piece of memorabilia.
My Wampsville friend and former Court Clerk Ted was to join me for dinner last night. He called after I was sitting waiting for him for an hour to report he could not make it. He either was sick or met a lady. I hope the latter.
Met John from northern New Jersey at the bar. Nice guy. We chatted about the glories of the Jersey beaches.
I was hungry. No Ted. Called Catherine. Asked if she wanted to feed me. No problem. I hurried over and partook of all kinds of delicious cheeses. Even got to watch a great movie. The one which received this year’s Academy Award as Best Picture. The Shape Of Water. Miss it not! Absolutely fantastic!
The writer had to be extremely talented. I have never seen a movie with so many surprising scenes. The unexpected every few minutes. Great writing!
Tonight at 9:40, Syracuse/TCU. TCU a 4 point favorite.
My day yesterday began with a noon doctor visit with my primary care physician, Dr. Norris. To review my blood and urine test results.
God bless! Everything good.
More importantly, my weight. When I was in last week for my annual physical, I had lost 24 pounds. One week later, 2 more. Total loss to date 26 pounds. Love it!
I suspect my home scale is broke. It has not moved in 7 weeks. Always shows a 20 pound loss. My heart doctor’s machine showed a 22 pound loss 2 weeks ago.
Time to get a new scale.
Blood pressure 110/80. Wowie!
Health increasingly important as one gets older.
The Cuban Coffee Queen is like 50 feet from Dr. Norris’ office. Stopped for lunch. Enjoyed Cuban cheese toast with tomato and a large hot Cuban coffee. I know, I cheated. Cuban bread made with pork lard. Milk in the Cuban coffee. I felt I was entitled.
Spring breakers all over Key West. Well behaved.
It seems every year, the spring breakers look younger to me. Makes sense. As I am one year older each year, they would of necessity look younger. Kids!
Key West a place where adults can be children again.
The foot race for all ages has been scheduled. The Cow Key Bridge Race. April 15.
The bridge is 300 feet long, the length of the race. It has been dubbed a zero K race. Designed for “athletes” who don’t want to wake up early or break a sweat. Over 1,000 will participate. Most costumed.
How we value things sometimes does not make sense. Seventeen were killed at Douglas High School. The students reacted and are reacting. Washington not.
This past week a dog was made to ride in a United luggage bin. The one above the passenger seat. The dog died. Within 48 hours, legislation was filed in the U.S. Senate to make sure a dog would never again be placed in a bin where he/she could die.
It would appear we value dogs more than children.
Trump and his minions are slowly turning our country to one like Germany was in the 1930’s.
Night time in  Delano, California. ICE looking for a particular Mexican to arrest and deport. Saw a Mexican couple getting into a SUV. The man looked like the one they sought.
As ICE approached, the couple panicked and took off. ICE gave chase. The SUV turned over. The couple died. The couple parents of 6 children.
Turned out the couple were illegals. Further turned out the man was not who ICE was seeking.
I appreciate ICE is doing its job as directed by superiors. Such does not make what they are doing correct.
The ICE of today are the Gestapo of yesterday. Our government is moving in the wrong direction. Many support Trump and believe in him. As did the Germans with Hitler.
The madness has to stop. America wake up! If not, in the end everyone will suffer including Trump’s followers.
Enjoy your day!
