Hi! I feel stupid to ask this but I was wondering if you could recommend Somme books for me? I’m looking for something new for the summer, but I’m groping in the dark here ahaha
Okay!!!! I'm actually very excited for this. I'm on mobile so sorry about the lack of links and such. I'm not really sure what genre you are looking for, and I read a lot of books over a variety of topics so I'll suggest a few.
SCI FI/FANTASY/DYSTOPIAN/RETELLINGS
The Lunar Chronicles - Marissa Meyer: These books bruh, I found Cinder at a thrift store nearly a decade ago and I was hooked. I love the universe she built and how she tied all the classic fairytales together. Fave character hands down is Wolf, but Cress and Thorn are also top contenders.
Arc of a Scythe series - Neil Shusterman: the premise of this books had me the minute I read the back cover in an airport bookstore. Like. It's everything I love in one book. Moral ambiguity, addressing our dependency on technology, political corruption even in an utopian society. Sign me TF up.
Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini: the first two books in this series are dry AF, but the last two books completely make up for the neverending world building that seemed almost redundant. Seriously. The last book, Inheritance absolutely blew me away, even if I didnt agree with the protagonist's final decision.
A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J. Maad: I found this book rec'd on tumblr and never fallen in love so fast with first, these books, and second Rhys and Cassian. Give me 100.
FICTION
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova: Its like the Da Vinci code but instead of Jesus its Dracula and it might just be one of the most brilliant books I've ever read. I still go back to this book on a regular basis because it's just that good.
Mr. Emersons Wife - Amy Belding Brown: this book isnt for everyone, it blends fiction with a lot of true life information about Ralph Waldo Emerson but this book is absolutely heart breaking. It will for sure stick with you.
Anything - Dan Brown: I'm going to be that person, but I love Dan Brown books. Like I love them. My favorite by far is Inferno, but I really liked the Lost Symbol as well. Zero shame over here.
CLASSICS
The Portrait of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde: First off, mai boi right here. I LOVE Oscar, I love everything about him, but especially this book. Some of the most profound quotes on the human condition come from this book and is still applicable today. This book is timeless and an all time fave.
Persuasion - Jane Austen: I will forever stand on my soapbox that Persuasion is the most slept on Jane Austen work. I love Captain Wentworth, I love Anne Elliot. I love the crazy cast of characters. I find Anne next level relatable and I want to both protect and give her the world.
Complete Works - Edgar Allan Poe: I have two Poe tattoo's and a likely neverending obsession. Alone is my favorite poem ever written, but check out his short stories. They are beautifully haunting, this mad cat delivers.
NONFICTION
Peter Lawford: The Man Who Kept the Secrets - James Spada: I have an obsession with both the Ratpack and the Kennedys and viola, this book is about a man who is both. It also is about a man who's got serious issues, but this was an insanely good read.
Columbine - Dave Cullen: I think the premise of this book is self explanatory. Beautifully and respectfully done. Heartbreaking.
Soiled Doves - Anne Seagraves: this is a book about prostitution in the Old West. Its actually really interesting. Not too long, but I've read it more than a dozen times.
HISTORICAL ROMANCE
The Relecutant Suitor - Kathleen Woodwiss: I asked my mom to get me this book when I was twelve and its one of my favorites to this day. I am a total bitch for historical romance and this one is no exception. There is war and intrigue and dastardly plots and love. Its everything and more.
A Rogue by Any Other Name - Sarah Maclean: all of her books are amazing, but this one is just.... Michael is basically the epitome of every fantasy I've ever had and I've never related so hard to a Heroine as I do Penelope. Plus this writer has a way with words I could only dream of.
Three Weeks with Lady X - Eloisa James: A big fan of this writing style as well. Lady X conquers what is considered the outskirts of what was acceptable in regency England, and how money quite literally made the man.
CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Austensibly Ordinary - Alyssa Goodnight: Modern day austensian tropes brought into modern times. Its exactly how it sounds. Light on 'the sex' but still worth a read.
The Wall of Winnipeg and Me - Mariana Zapata: I dont know how I found this author but this book is incredible. Its got all the things that I love. A celebrity curve that is still insanely realistic and real. Football and shitty families, and marriages of convenience and everything else.
Dirty Rowdy Thing - Christina Lauren: I get weird about first person POV, but Christina Lauren does it very well. This also goes into the realm of kinks which I find rare in a lot of modern romances. The bondage is hot, the main characters are hotter.
Sorry this ended up so long!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Tumblr media
I had a friend create a 10-category, 50-question Harry Potter trivia quiz for my 30th birthday. I have a Ravenclaw tattoo that takes up most of my right forearm. I’ve helped orchestrate an HP-themed baby shower. I’ve held multiple HP movie marathons. And when we were first dating and Wife told me she’d never read the books, I legitimately cried and then blocked it from my memory. When she told me for the second time, months later, I cried again.
One could say I’m a fan of the wizarding world.
So here we are, at the second entry in the second wizarding franchise, and the only question really worth answering is, is this a world that’s still worth visiting? Well...
Imagine someone you love - it could be anyone, but as an example I’ll use your best friend. Imagine your BEST friend, whom you’ve shared so much with, whom you’ve gone through ups and downs with. That one. Now imagine that every few months, your best friend’s mom sends you a text, or calls you, or puts up a billboard in your town that seems to be actively trying to get you to hate your best friend. Things like “She kicks puppies” or “One time, she made fun of a homeless man until he cried” or “She told me she wants to set fire to a hospital.” Like, real fucked up stuff. Would you maintain a relationship with that friend? With them both? Or would you cut ties completely and just hold onto the memories of the friendship you used to have?
I’m genuinely asking, because J.K. Rowling seems hellbent on shitting all over the things I love in some twisted effort to make me utterly baffled and repulsed by the world she has created. I never thought I’d say this, but Johnny Depp is the least of this movie’s problems, so welcome to Whose Crime Is It Anyway? where the timelines are made up and the plot points don't matter.
A spoilery summary! Our favorite Hufflepuff Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is asked by Hot Dumbledore (Jude Law) to go to Paris and find Credence (Ezra Miller). You remember Credence, the sweet emo boy from the first movie whose death functioned as the climax of the film? JK JK death is meaningless and impermanent here! It’s the roaring 20s, everyone’s drunk. Newt needs to find him because Grindelwald (Johnny Depp, doing his best impression of day-old potato salad) is also looking for him. Credence is the subject of a prophecy that everyone’s familiar with but the audience, you see, and he’s currently trapped in a Parisian street circus with a woman/snake named Nagini (Claudia Kim, and yes, THAT Nagini). Jacob and Queenie (Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol) also show up again, because they were in the first movie too so they have to be here for this. Jacob’s memory has been restored because...~handwavey reasons~ and Queenie decides to join The Mayonnaise Man’s cause as a wizard Nazi because...she wants to marry a Muggle. Somehow I think she didn’t read the whole orientation flyer. Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) is engaged to Newt’s brother, Theseus (Callum Turner) but is mostly hanging around to look sad and reveal that Credence couldn’t be her long-lost brother because she killed her long-lost brother by switching him with another baby on a ship right before it sank at sea. And she’s right, Credence isn’t her brother - he’s gone over to the dark side, where the vaguely human amalgamation of cauliflower rice tells him he’s the long-lost brother of Albus Dumbledore! Because why the fuck not, nothing else in this goddamn thing makes any sense anyway.
I would also like to point out I left out at least 40 more characters, many of whom seem to be important but are never named or introduced in any way.
SEVERAL thoughts:
Visually, this world is stunning. The set designers have done an incredible job showcasing new magical settings in rich, vivid detail. The Parisian street circus and the French Ministry of Magic building were particular favorites of mine.
Likewise, the 1927-era costumes are drop-dead gorgeous. This franchise should really be called Fantastic Coats and Where to Find Them.
50 galleons seems so steep. I wonder what the wizarding inflation rate is.
Snakes can fit through bars of cages...
Performances - Redmayne is sweet, but virtually shoved out of the way in his own franchise; Kravitz is cold and removed - is that acting choice secret pain or constipation? Hard to say; Fogler is underutilized, especially after being the emotional MVP of the first film; Sudol is fractured and manic, completely devoid of her earnest warmth from before; Miller barely gets 3 lines, and mostly looks like he’s about to cry; Law is fine as hell and kindly and wise and doesn’t give off weird “I’m going to use children as sacrificial lambs without telling them or anyone else about it” vibes, so that’s already a big step up from the Dumbledore we get in the books; and then there’s Johnny. Johnny “lightly braised tofu” Depp is giving one of his most understated performances in years, to the point that he’s almost...boring? Most genocidal fuckheads are at least compelling speakers, but this dehydrated turnip just sort of glides about, while his followers do dastardly things for him. He doesn’t even kill his own toddlers, he outsources it to his followers. Does nobody believe in honest, hard work anymore?
Basically all of the details - the set dressing, the costumes, the overall aesthetics and feel of the film - are beautifully realized. However, the foundation is made of smoke and sand and the distant sound of JKR’s maniacal laughter.
Cast and endorse an accused abuser who is teetering on the brink of public collapse? Check. Include outdated Orientalism cliches by casting an East Asian woman as mysterious, dangerous, and literally snake-like? Check. How about a white imperialist Imperius-ing Leta Lestrange's (black African) mother and literally forcing her into sex slavery with no follow-up or reflection on the part of the film or its characters? Check. It’s like some sort of perverse bingo game she’s playing to try to alienate everyone who might have seen themselves in the Harry Potter universe as belonging, because they understood what it was like to be an outsider, to be abused, to be shunned and made fun of and ostracized. Cause fuck all those people, amirite?
And that’s just the offensive choices from a purely political standpoint. How about the offensive choices regarding more trivial matters like linear time and space - like Dumbledore teaching Transfiguration, not DAtDA. Or like Professor MacGonagall being born in 1935, yet somehow teaching at Hogwarts in 1927. People apparating inside Hogwarts. Complete reversals of characters’ personalities and motivations. Characters being introduced and never seen again (where did Bunty go?? Did she die???) Characters NOT being introduced and never seen again (what up Jessica Williams, super psyched that you’re here, sure would be neat if I knew who the fuck you were playing or why that person was important!) If the references are meant for fans’ benefit, it fucking BACKFIRED, because most HP fans I know aren’t looking for a convoluted soap opera where babies are switched, people have secret brothers, everyone's amnesia gets reversed, and people come back from the dead.
Now that I think about it, the practice of confronting a boggart is super problematic. Like people have traumas. It's not all spiders and snakes, Dumbledore! God, Hogwarts pedagogy is shit.
I’m still not convinced that Jude Law’s tasty Daddy Dumbledore could possibly still be in love with this tuna salad sandwich from a vending machine at the DMV. That flashback in the Mirror of Erised is supposed to be full of longing but all I could think was, “is this how straight people think gay sex works?” Would have loved to hear that day in the writer’s room. “Maybe we could have them kiss?” “Too gay. What if they exchange blood vows and hold hands to form a magical amulet?” “Nailed it.” *everyone high fives and chugs a Red Bull*
There’s just...so much. So much that I wish were different. I don’t quite know how it’s possible for a film to explain both too much and not enough, but here we are. The Crimes of Grindlewald isn’t just a title, it’s a prophecy of what audiences are forced to endure here - it’s not just separating art from artist, it’s not just cultural exploitation and othering, it’s not just queer erasure, it’s not just overplotted and underwhelming narrative, it’s not just cheap shocks and winking references. The rap sheet just keeps getting longer and longer, and I have to wonder when, if ever, Rowling will atone for these crimes.

Ode To Beauty And The Beast
I’ve loved Beauty and the Beast since I was 5. Belle was & still is my favorite Disney princess. Like Emma, this heroine (& in turn this story & it’s lessons) has shaped me into the person I am today. I watched this film on almost a constant loop. “With a dreamy far off look, & her nose stuck in a book” describes me to a T. I would tell people to ‘Be Our Guest” when they would walk in our door; or any door for that matter. When I was 7 I named my new puppy Beauty. Do I need to go on?
I believe it was around the release of Maleficent that I began to hear whispers of a live action BATB. My heart leapt out of my chest in anticipation & trepidation. Leading up to the films release I tried my damndest to keep my expectations in check. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say my inner child wasn’t full to bursting. I knew that even if the film was mediocre I would at least enjoy the music & visuals, like I did w/ the live action Cinderella. But, oh was this retelling better than anything I could've hoped for.
THE CAST IS PERFECT!! I don’t care what anyone says Emma Watson is an amazing Belle. She put so much into this role, and it shows beautifully. Dan Stevens deserves an award for being able to flawlessly, not only act, dance, but sing through all the crazy accoutrement that made him into the Beast/Prince we all know & love. Luke Evan’s Gaston is as dastardly as ever. I loved the slow build of his evilness; & I left the film cursing him more than when I arrived. Which I didn’t think was possible but damn! Lefou was an absolute joy & such a great surprise. By the end I was whisper shouting at him “C’mon Lefou, you see Gaston’s evil, STOP HIM!” Wow Josh Gad; SO GOOD!! Ewan Mcgregor as Lumiere was fantastic; Kevin Kline, Ian Mckellen, Emma Thompson... I can go on & on!!
THE NEW SONGS ARE AMAZING!! I do not want to see the day when “Evermore” doesn’t make me choke up or bring me to racking sobs. With that song there is no inbetween. “Days in the Sun” was a perfect new take on “Human Again”; & in some ways it’s almost better than it’s predecessor. Seeing “Be Our Guest” be brought to life was truly something amazing to behold; as was “Beauty & The Beast.”. Which by that point my cheeks were wet with tears.
THE VISUALS WERE BREATHTAKING, THOSE COSTUMES ARE TO DIE FOR!! I need Belle’s wedding dress in my life NOW!! And honestly that yellow dress isn’t even that bad. Everyone needs to get off their high horse & shut it. This film expanded on things that needed expanding, added things that I didn't even think needed to be there. ANSWERS QUESTIONS THAT I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR FOREVER (how do the villagers not know about the castle/why were the servants cursed along w/ The Prince, etc.) I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop praising this film. I’ve seen it twice now & there’s nothing I would change. Except for maybe an extra bit of backstory to when The Prince was young. But that’s just me being nitpicky. I was smiling from ear to ear from the moment the first notes of “Belle” began; to crying tears of joy when “Beauty and the Beast (Finale)” was playing. This film made me feel like a kid again; & I fell back in love with one of my favorite fairy tales.
Beauty & The Beast (2017) is sooo good & I'm sooo happy it's soo good!

KOrruption had run rampant over the Schmoedown for over half a year, under what seemed to be the careful direction of Mike Kalinowski.  But what many expected was someone was pulling the strings.  Kalinowski was directed to force Thadd Williams (the current Commissioner) to push for a Commissionership Match against Kristian Harloff, the original commissioner of the league.  Thadd was to give up temporary leadership of the Schmoedown at the end of last year’s Spectacular, but chose not too, using a faulty contract as the reason for keeping his power.  Eventually with Brianne Chandler’s suggestion, 2 more competitors were added in Emma Fyffe and Tom Dagnino (aka Finstock), making this a Commissioner Bowl, the winner becoming Commissioner of the Schmoedown for the next season.
Surprisingly Thadd Williams, in this very awkward position, was winning early.  Harloff and Finstock were struggling with Fyffe holding close to Williams.  At the beginning of Round 3 Finstock was eliminated early.  But after the final questions were asked we headed to Sudden Death with a 3-way tie.  Ultimately one question decided it all and Emma Fyffe won, and deservingly so.  But then Thadd trying to preserve his secrets attempts to shred the original KOrruption letter he received from Kalinowski, and was successful.  But then our mystery lawyer who had been working with Kalinowski, giving him orders from his mystery employer, not only helped reveal that Kristian Harloff was responsible for Kalinowski and using him as a puppet. Kristian then revealed that regardless of Thadd’s contract that he was always the “Chairman” of the Schmoedown and would continue to be so and removed Thadd altogether.
The Chairman hinted that the Commissionership that Emma Fyffe won will be one of many, my assumption being that there could be multiple commissioners heading each league of the Schmoedown and all answering to the Chairman, Kristian Harloff.
Part 1 Match 2: Team Championships - Shirewolves (Cushing/Wolfe) vs Who’s the Boss? (Bateman/Reilly)
Tumblr media
This was arguably the most anticipated match of the Spectacular.  You had the Shirewolves, a dream team of Rachel Cushing and Clarke Wolfe who proved all the haters wrong and became the most dominant team in the Schmoedown since The Patriots and their ridiculous run.  Then you had Who’s the Boss, a team created out of the anarchy of KOrruption, but ended up being a force in their own right, with surging Ben Bateman and the veteran and 2-time champ Mark Reilly.
The match lived up to its hype and then some.  It all came down to 2 5-point questions and the rest is history.  The Shirewolves retained their titles and continued to prove all the haters and those who disprove of the Shirewolves wrong.  They are the rightful team champions.  It was well deserved.  Who’s the Boss however seem to want to stay together which leads to a post-match scene that has stirred up conversation amongst those of the Action Army...
Ben Bateman, saddened by his team loss, is greeted by his longtime teammate, the Dastardly Andrew Ghai, who proposes that if Bateman wants to stick with Reilly that he has found another person to be his teammate and they can form a faction.  All seems to be well when Ghai walks away until Ghai tackles (!!!) Bateman seeming to have injured him saying “Who’s the Boss now, B*%^?!?!”  I guess this is the end of Team Action, and this means Ghai’s future in the league will remain a mystery for now...
Part 2 Match 3: Star Wars Championship - Alex Damon vs Ken Napzok
Tumblr media
Alex Damon seems to be undefeatable of late.  He won the 3-way at the live event, he then won the open match for the title.  But it seemed he wanted more of a challenge before really accepting being a Star Wars Champion.  KOrruption gave Ken Napzok an opening to align himself with Kalinowski to make it possible for Kalinowski to push Thadd Williams to put Napzok in a Star Wars Championship match.
At first the match was close, with each player going blow for blow.  But after round 2 and some misses and steals, Damon took hold and never let go, once again confirming his dominance in the field of Star Wars trivia.  Possibly hinting at a possible future match, Damon wants to battle Witwer for the title, which would be something if the scheduling worked out, could happen at Star Wars Celebration in April.
Part 2 Match 4: #1 Contender Match - Clarke Wolfe vs Dan Murrell
Tumblr media
This was a long-awaited match between two legends of the Schmoedown.  Clarke Wolfe, who has forged a singular path in the Schmoedown and lost her first ever title shot against a then undefeated Dan Murrell.  Then there is Dan Murrell himself, the GOAT as many call him and 2-time champion, who has had a rough year but had a great Ultimate Schmoedown Tournament run until running into Ethan Erwin, the potential Rookie and Player of the Year.
This match was going to be tough by many prognosticators for Clarke Wolfe, knowing she would be defending her Team Title just two matches earlier against Who’s the Boss, and in the end that ended up being accurate with Dan Murrell taking the match and securing a spot for himself at the Season Opener in NY to go up against the winner of the main event of Spectacular between John Rocha, his current stablemate/rival and Ethan Erwin.  Clarke however once again fought admirably and you can tell she did all she could but came up short.
Part 3 Match 5: Innergeekdom Championship - Mara Knopic vs Mike Kalinowski
Tumblr media
This was probably my 2nd most anticipated match of the Spectacular, especially after what occurred in the 1st match between between these two competitors.  Mara Knopic came out of nowhere and took the Innergeekdom League by store.  Watching her live and taking the belt from Jason Inman was extremely impressive.  But then a wind of KOrruption blew through the room and Kalinowski showed up to demand (and then arrange) a rematch at Spectacular for the belt that Knopic just won, to which she shrugged it off saying she would do it.
At this point in Spectacular, Kalinowski is down as well as KOrruption.  Finding out Kristian Harloff has been using you, Napzok your partner loses his match, how does it end?  The match was as close as expected going all the way to Sudden Death.  And somehow, someway, Kalinowski won.  I feel like this match could have been won by Knopic, but that’s just how it goes.  More shocking was Knopic essentially stating she wants to take a step back from the Schmoedown and having an extremely brief interview.  I hope Knopic returns to the league because she definitely put her stamp on it.  Kalinowski however finally achieved his dream of holding the Innergeekdom belt.
Part 3 Match 6: Singles Championship - John Rocha vs Ethan Erwin
Tumblr media
Since the beginning of Season 3 of the Schmoedown I fell in love with the Outlaw, John Rocha.  The personification of pure determination and will power, with a dose of good, old (and new) fashioned justice and smack talk, I couldn’t help but be a supporter of John Rocha then and now.  I’ve been on the train of Top Ten, the Four Horsemen, and now the Five Horsemen.  I was however concerned that this match might not go his way with the heavy favorite for Rookie and Player of the Year in Ethan Erwin challenging for his title.
As expected Ethan Erwin played as well as always, with Rocha stumbling a bit in the 2nd round.  Rocha kept it close but eventually lost in a TKO to Ethan Erwin, who is now a Singles Champion will have a rematch with Dan Murrell in NY, which potentially Murrell becoming the 1st 3-time champion.  That will make for a compelling season opener.  Then in the post-game interviews, Matt Knost, longtime partner of John Rocha, decides to retire from the Schmoedown, leaving an opening in Rocha’s stable.  That will be an interesting development going forward.
And running throughout the entirety of the event was a storyline involving Finstock/Dagnino looking for his infamous mask to no avail.  Well we found out that it was in fact Robert Meyer Burnett, the man burned and evicted from the Lion’s Den one year ago, getting some immediate revenge on Dagnino by burning his mask.  Not sure what this means going forward but RMB could be ready for a comeback...
We also got some major announcements regarding the Schmoedown for Season Six.  I recommend you watch for yourself towards the end of the Part 3 video yourself to learn more, but their Patreon comes into play which will help grow the league further.
And that was it for the Spectacular!  It was easily the best event put on by the Schmoes themselves Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis.  Not to mention the countless others who put so much time and effort into this.  Please check out the Schmoedown thus far on Collider Video.  And please support them on Patreon!

Fulfills my craving for integration of Scripture and neuroscience I've read Brene Brown and she has much wisdom. But after I read her, I was craving a solid integration of Scripture and theology with psychology and neuroscience on the subject of shame. Curt Thompson does that for me, and more. I finished reading The Soul of Shame this morning and immediately ordered 20 copies to give, sell, and loan at our church. Enough said. Curt personifies shame as lurking, lying, whispering, manipulating, hiding, doing its dastardly work to undermine the Holy Spirit. But there is hope for healing. My favorite chapter is 8, where the foundational principles apply to our primary biological and spiritual relationships. In Curt's words, "The process of being known in the context of our vulnerability within the church becomes one of the most powerful means of evangelism and healing." The book is not one to skim. Take your time to read it ponder it. I'll be gathering some fellow pastors to explore it together, as we did with his first book. Go to Amazon
Excellent Insights on the Power of Shame Curt Thompson's book, The Soul of Shame, helps readers reflect theologically on the unspoken topic that is in the air we breathe: shame. Thompson deals with shame on the personal level but also understands how it can affect structures and institutions. He posits that shame is the greatest tool of evil in the world to bring disintegration to self and disruption to relationships. Shame, according to Thompson, keeps us locked up emotionally, fuels addiction, alienates us from God and keeps us from being our best self. The pervasiveness of shame makes it hard to escape. We grow with shame from early childhood and have it constantly reinforced as we mature. Thompson's antidote to shame is vulnerability within community. Go to Amazon
One of the best reads of 2015 I cannot recommend The Soul of Shame highly enough. The author takes complex neuroscience, scripture and psychology and blends them together in an easy to understand narrative. His insights into shame brought new meanings to the Genesis story of Adam and Eve that make sense to us today in ways that I had not considered. It seems that, since shame is so pervasive and deeply embedded within us that we take it as something that is normal and simply to be tolerated, or even enhanced. It is not, but he also offers the cure! We can change our stories and drain away the toxicity of shame-based beliefs and behaviors. Go to Amazon
Brene Brown Christified If you've read Brene, you know that everything she write or says is worthwhile. Add to her work some brain research and the backdrop of the Story of Scripture, and you get The Soul of Shame. Well written, insightful, Biblical, and practical, Curt Thompson has given us a book that any group would benefit from. Potentially transformative stuff (if practiced!). Go to Amazon
Excellent sophomore release My friend Curt Thompson's sophomore release, The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves (IVP, 2015) does not disappoint. He is a Christian psychiatrist deeply influenced by the field of interpersonal neurobiology and particularly the work of Dan Siegel. Go to Amazon
Three Stars Not the greatest flow to his writing. More examples would have helped. Go to Amazon
Best book of shame I have read Great book on the subject of personal shame. Written by a Christian psychiatrist who blends the right about of scientific medical information and spiritual information. Not preachy, but also does not shy away from the discussing the influence of unseen spiritual forces that accuse and condemn, and these forces impact shame. I normally don't read books more than once, but I've already read it twice and continue to think about what was written. Go to Amazon
A Must Read This should be read - probably twice - as I've shared the content with others they are struck by the importance for their lives and work. Thompson's description of how shame functions in human lives and the life of society makes me stop and think over and over again. Imagine being told that you're good enough, that you are beloved, that you can engage with your vulnerabilities and stand with grace and humility and a solid understanding of who you are without shame. Yes, this is a book about shame and how it works and how we can stand against it's relationship destroying ways. There's a lot more to be said, but nothing as important as recommending that you read the book and have a writing instrument ready to underline and write notes. Powerful! Timely! Go to Amazon
thus destroying ties to the very thing that we want and need most - love, approval and lasting fulfillment Be forewarned! Shame Communicated Well Great & Annoying- It's very enlightening but sadly enforces his religious ideology An Intellectual treatise A great resource to normalize shame as well as provide background ... Thompson creatively ties biblical truth, spiritual transformation, and ... VERY DIFFICULT READ - UNIVERSITY STYLE OF WRITING ... opening to what drives us and the ones we love Awesome

2016 Fred Van Lente Day Chat Transcript
Brian Cronin: Welcome, everyone, to the Fred Van Lente Day chat!
Brian Cronin: Some quick Fred Van Lente Day links for everyone to take a look at when they get here.
Brian Cronin: An exclusive preview of “Comic Book History of Comics” #3!
Brian Cronin: And a cool look at some weird connections in comic book history, using a lot of awesome Ryan Dunlavey art to illustrate a bunch of them!
Fred Van Lente: I like how you added not one, not two, but THREE random Jack Kirby + Celebrities encounters to this list
Brian Cronin: When we started talking connections, I couldn’t help it. It’s amazing that he really does have these connections to these super famous people. And that doesn’t even count his CIA connections when his art was used for the fake movie that they were filming that was made into the film “Argo”!
Fred Van Lente: I will never get tired of looking at his expression here:
“If I get closer, will he bite me”
Brian Cronin: You would have thought that Zappa would have prepared Kirby for Alan Moore. It should have taught him that long hairs could be his friend.
Fred Van Lente: This is before Moore became a wizard and expending all that mana really drained him (I don’t know why I bust on Alan Moore so much, when I was 16 I basically wanted to be him). _________________________________________________________________________________________
Brian Cronin: Was “HerStory” something that you and Ryan considered having in the original “Comic Book History of Comics”?
Fred Van Lente: It was. “Comic Book History of Comics” is unusual for us in a lot of ways structurally because both “Action Philosophers” (and soon “Action Presidents”) are biography based. But “CBHoC” is structured more around particular ideas or genres or movements. So I could never figure out how to get “Women in Comics” in there as a story without it smacking of raw tokenism. Then when the book came out and the biggest criticism was “Where are the women?” I was like, well, that was a missed opportunity.
Brian Cronin: And there, you’re obviously hurt by the very nature of patriarchal history.
Fred Van Lente: Yeah, exactly.
Brian Cronin: When IDW said they wanted to bring back the book I realized this was my chance to right that wrong.
Wayne Hotu: I watched “Carol” for the first time the other week… I thought it was great. I think I heard about Patricia Highsmith doing comics, but not which ones
Fred Van Lente: Yeah, I need to see “Carol.” I am on a big Patricia Highsmith kick right now as a result of doing that story. Tore through “Talented Mr. Ripley,” and halfway through “Strangers on a Train” which I don’t like nearly as much. But then I think I’ll do “Price of Salt” (which was made into “Carol”).
Brian Cronin: I’m fascinated by how she was able to be so ruthless with her own history. Just excising the part of her past she didn’t want to discuss anymore. “If I said it didn’t happen, it didn’t happen.”
Fred Van Lente: Yeah. Highsmith, by all accounts (particularly her girlfriends’), was a real character. It’s not hard to see how she could really get into the mindset of a sociopath like Ripley. The info in the Patricia Highsmith piece comes mostly from “The Talented Miss Highsmith,” a good if rather … elliptically written biography. The author actually talked to Timely editor Vince Fago, and that’s how we know about this disastrous date with Stan Lee. _________________________________________________________________________________________
Wayne Hotu: The “Comic Book History of Comics” “HerStory” format kind of reminds me of those old Big Books that… Vertigo? Paradox Press? used to come out with… where they devote a page to a topic/person.
Fred Van Lente: The Paradox Press Big Books were a big influence! I have almost all of them on my shelf. Geez, maybe I should try and complete a collection of that. I’ve already lost interest in bobbleheads.
Wayne Hotu: Which other famous women will you cover?
Fred Van Lente: Highsmith is #3, we do Nell Brinkley in #1, Tarpe Mills in #2. Jackie Ormes is in #4. _________________________________________________________________________________________
Dennis Calero: Give us your top reasons that you love Dennis Calero.
Fred Van Lente: Why I love Dennis Calero: 1. He joins my live chat. 2. His “Six-pack” 3. I can’t remember
Dennis Calero: Airplane vodka bottles come in 6 packs
Fred Van Lente: “My abs look like airplane vodka bottles” was my opening line to girls in college. ___________________________________________________________________________________________
Brian Cronin: When “Generation Zero” was being previewed, one of the hooks for it was “Archie Meets Authority”. If you had to write an “Archie” Comic, which one would you go for? You better say “Jughead.”
Fred Van Lente: “The Shield”. “Vic Mackey Infiltrates Riverdale”
Fred Van Lente: Sure, Jughead, I guess?
Brian Cronin: Good, I got the answer I wanted. Let’s close this chat down now!
Fred Van Lente: My grandfather had this cabin by the lake in Holland, MI and he had all these comics in a box up in the attic where we had to sleep. There were a lot of 1970s DC stuff, some real gems like “Brave and the Bold.” But then my dastardly older cousins stole them all for their personal collection. All that were left were the “Archies.” I learned a lot about Archie during that long, sad, hot summer. But in my mind he makes me think…of failure. [END SCENE] [APPLAUSE]
Brian Cronin: Hey, 1970s “Archie” comics had some great work in them. Frank Doyle, Dan DeCarlo, Samm Schwartz, George Gladir, some great creators on the books back then.
Fred Van Lente: Actually, no, “Betty and Veronica” are pretty cool. I like the idea of doing a whole comic about two high school girls trying to backstab each other. My first meeting with the editor it would be like: “Look, they brought back Bucky back, why can’t Betty FINALLY kill Veronica? I mean you know she wants it. Or maybe Veronica can kill Betty? I know: PHONE POLL! LET THE READERS DECIDE!!”
Dennis Calero: What about a “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane” type scenario?
Wayne Hotu: I’ve always been Team Veronica… why are so many other people wrong?
Fred Van Lente: I think I always liked Betty just because Veronica’s wealth is slightly intimidating.
Dennis Calero: I prefer Veronica because Betty’s poverty is crap.
Fred Van Lente: “Mr. Dennis Lodge”
Brian Cronin: The best character is clearly…Glenn Scarpelli, from “One Day at a Time”!
Brian Cronin: His father, Henry Scarpelli, was a long time “Archie” artist, so Glenn would appear in the comics when he became kind of sort of famous in the early 1980s.
Fred Van Lente: I hope Reggie and Archie kick that guy’s ass. __________________________________________________________________________________________
BikeTodd: Fred, you’ve worked for a lot of different companies just in the past year, is there a favorite among them?
Fred Van Lente: My lawyers tell me that it is bad business practice to name a favorite client on a chat forum that will later be posted on a public blog like “Comics Should Be Good.” But! Everybody’s got their strengths and weaknesses. I’ve worked for Boom, IDW, Dark Horse, Marvel, Valiant, Dynamite, and I’m working for most of those now and plan to keep doing so in the future. So they can’t be that bad, right? __________________________________________________________________________________________
Taimur Dar: I don’t suppose we’ll be seeing another Sebastian Greene mystery in the near future?
Fred Van Lente: No plans at present. I really liked how “Weird Detective” came together as a stand-alone trade paperback. Someone told me today the trade will be out in Feb 2017, so I am psyched for that. __________________________________________________________________________________________
Brian Cronin: Any plans for “Generation Zero” to cross over with any other Valiant titles?
Fred Van Lente: Generation Zero will remain in the wild, weird town of Rook, Michigan for the foreseeable future. I imagine they’ll be involved in “Harbinger Wars 2” (since they debuted in the original “Harbinger Wars”) but that’s not until 2018. __________________________________________________________________________________________
ZKrishef: Greetings, sir! I just wanted to say that I’m going to be reviewing Slapstick for a website called Critical Writ. I’m incredibly excited to review it. Everything about it looks marvelous. Have a wonderful day!
Fred Van Lente: Thanks! Reilly, Diego and I have such a great time doing that, I feel almost guilty.
Brian Cronin: Tell us something about this…Slapstick, that you speak of.
Fred Van Lente: Slapstick was named “Wizard Magazine”‘s Best New Character of…I want to say 1992? Slapstick is a living toon superhero, a kid from our world — well, the Marvel Universe — who gets transformed into Roger Rabbit, basically.
Dennis Calero: Isn’t there another Marvel cartooneqsue character? Tell me my mind, Fred Van Lente!
Mark Weisenberger Calise: I loved Slapstick.
Fred Van Lente: In our comic, he is a headcase who thinks he is a gritty, realistic superhero in the vein of the Punisher and tries to get work as a hero for hire but he ends up killing everyone because his cartoon physics actually horrible murder flesh and blood people.
Taimur Dar: I’m amazed Marvel let you do something involving Slapstick and his missing “dingus.”
Fred Van Lente: Like, I had never heard of Slapstick when Marvel asked me to do the book all I knew about him was literally: 1) He was like Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a hero 2) And he has no dick So we kinda had to expand from there you know? In our comic crazed toons from Dimension Ecch invade Earth and only Slapstick can stop them because they’re only attacking New Jersey and no one else gives a shit. And…uhmmm…Ms Marvel is…uh…in space…yeah, she’s in space.
BikeTodd: Well, it is Jersey.
Dennis Calero: Is this something to do with Crossroads of Dimensions like in that Man-Thing thing with Howard the Duck and the hot chick!
Fred Van Lente: The Nexus of All Realities doesn’t play a role here but A.R.M.O.R., the inter dimensional defense agency I created for “Marvel Zombies 3,” does (they were first seen defending the Nexus in “Marvel Zombies 3”)
Fred Van Lente: In the first four issues of “Slapstick” alone we have Bro-Man Master of the Multiverse, the Taurs (My Little Pony/Smurf centaurs) and WAR D.O.G.S., America’s Best Friend.
Brian Cronin: Like Dennis mentioned, will we see Madcap meet Slapstick at all? That would be an epic battle, much like Jesus vs. Socrates.
Dennis Calero: Madcap! Thanks, Brian, I thought I was going crazy!
Fred Van Lente They made Madcap into Deadpool’s arch-nemesis (which I think is a pretty good choice). So I think, if anything, he’s a tad over-saturated at just this moment, believe it or not.
Albert Ching: Madcap being overexposed is probably the most surprising thing to happen in 2016.
Dennis Calero: Yes. Madcap is definitely the most SURPRISING thing this year (COUGH COUGH)
Fred Van Lente: So yeah, buy “Slapstick,” it’s amazing, and there’s no movie attached to it so it’s not exactly going to burn up the sales charts. __________________________________________________________________________________________
p_keely: You have had a varied career in genres. Is there a genre you want to try?
Fred Van Lente: I’ve been doing a lot of mysteries a lot lately. My first prose novel, “Ten Dead Comedians,” will be out in July (random plug). So I’m hoping to do more of those. I love historical fiction. I had a great time with Dennis doing our Shanghai story in “Assassins Creed: Templars.” That’s a fun period of history. __________________________________________________________________________________________
Mark Belktron: Who would win in a fight, Jesus of Nazareth or Socrates?
Fred Van Lente: Mark, Jesus came back from the dead and Socrates didn’t, so I think you have your winner right there.
Dennis Calero: Even Jesus from 169th street would kick Socrates’ ass.
Mark Belktron: That is such a good answer. Thank you, Fred. __________________________________________________________________________________________
BikeTodd: Is there planned number of issues for “Generation Zero”? There has been some grumbling from the Valiant faithful over the apparent sudden end to series.
Fred Van Lente: In this instance, the fans’ fears are well-founded, looks like “Generation Zero” will only last two storyarcs. But there are two good storyarcs and I’ll be able to wrap the storyline the way I want. __________________________________________________________________________________________
RyanDunlavey: Happy Fred Van Lente Day, everybody! I am just here to let you know that Fred’s latest “Action Presidents” script did NOT make me tear up in the dentist chair yesterday. ALL LIES!
Fred Van Lente: Kind words from super-cartoonist Ryan Dunlavey!
Dennis Calero: Hey, it’s the fall me!
RyanDunlavey: Gotta go help my kid with his homework. Give him hell, Dennis!
Dennis Calero: On it!
Fred Van Lente: Yeah, that was the Theodore Roosevelt one, looking to see Ryan tear that one up.
Dennis Calero: Is there one on James Buchanan?
Fred Van Lente: Buchanan appears in “Abraham Lincoln,” does that count?
Dennis Calero: Sure, why not? __________________________________________________________________________________________
Dennis Calero: How did you feel about the musical portrayal of Hamilton? From the John Adams biography, he seems like a dick. What’s your verdict? Hero or dick?
Fred Van Lente: Oh, dick. Definitely dick. But he’s way less of a dick than Jefferson. Hamilton was OUR dick. “The People’s Dick.”
Brian Cronin: Okay, rank Adams, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison and Hamilton in dickery.
Fred Van Lente: Well, I’m not going to lie I don’t know too much about Monroe and Madison. Monroe was kind of Jefferson’s toady. Madison basically wrote the Constitution and eventually outgrew Jefferson’s shadow. Hamilton was a horndog and pretty arrogant, to the point where not apologizing to Burr when he really was kind of a dick to Burr literally got him killed. Jefferson was a racist who wrote “All men are created equal”, go figure that one out. Adams was not really someone you would want to hang out with because he was pretty headstrong and full of himself, but on the other hand he didn’t own any human beings and actively try to keep them in slavery. And despite Jefferson having written the Declaration, the intellectual foundation of the Revolution really came from Adams.
So Adams: Least Dickish, Jefferson: Most Dickish, Hamilton and Madison: Tied for second-least Dickish and Monroe= Just meh. I expect this to be a listicle on CBR tomorrow, Brian.
Wayne Hotu: Which one did William Daniels play in that movie?
Brian Cronin: Adams
Mark Weisenberger Calise: William Daniels played Adams in the original Broadway cast of “1776” too, I believe
Brian Cronin: Yep.
Fred Van Lente: I saw Brent Spiner play Adams in “1776.” He was rad
Dennis Calero: Brent Spiner should have chosen one night to play Data playing Adams.
Brian Cronin: That would have been too much awesomeness for the audience to handle
Fred Van Lente: “SIT DOWN, JOHN, SIT DOWN” “All right” (Data sits)
Fred Van Lente: I really like “Hamilton,” but it’s no “1776,” partly because it’s a straight-up biopic and not about this very specific drama of trying to get the Declaration out. So it’s a lot more … flabbier is the wrong word, but because a guy’s life story can’t be as dramatically structured.
Brian Cronin: Absolutely agreed. “Hamilton” is a great musical. I just like “1776” even better.
Fred Van Lente: Seconded. __________________________________________________________________________________________
Brian Cronin: How do you and Reilly write Slapstick? Co-plot and then you script?
Fred Van Lente: Reilly and I go to a bar and drink for like a sold two hours. I write out what we talked about semi-legibly on a single piece of paper. I tear off this piece of paper and give it to him and he types it for our editors because I was, like, “If you want to be co-writer you’ve got to like actually type some shit.”
Brian Cronin: Seems fair
Fred Van Lente: Marvel approves/disapproves/comments. Reilly draws out rough layouts — they’re called “storyboards” in the credits but they’re really more like regular comics thumbnails. And then Diego pencils and inks over them. Once all the pencils are done, I do lettering script that Reilly approves/comments on before I give to Marvel. So it’s kind of like regular Marvel Style just with a breakdown/co-writer component (Reilly)
Brian Cronin: It sounds a bit like how Giffen and DeMatteis did “Justice League International.” Although I think Giffen plotted solo.
Fred Van Lente: Yeah, Giffen/DeMatteis on “JLI” was my inspiration.
Brian Cronin: Well, it certainly worked out for a hilarious comic when Giffen and DeMatteis did it.
Fred Van Lente: I am super happy with it. I hope people check it out. __________________________________________________________________________________________
Taimur Dar: I know before “Slapstick,” Reilly did an “Incredible Hercules” story. Was that first time you worked together or was there something else before that?
Fred Van Lente: You know, I think that was the first time, the Thorcules arc of “iHerc.” He lives nearby and we became fast pals after that __________________________________________________________________________________________
Fred Van Lente: Wow, that hour flew by … last licks anybody?
Brian Cronin: Plug “Action Presidents”!
Fred Van Lente: I will plug “Action Presidents” on the THIRTEENTH Fred Van Lente Day chat because it will not be out until Presidents Day 2018. But it will be glorious and awesome. All four hardback books of it.
Dennis Calero: Plug the “Templar” trade!!!
Fred Van Lente: “Assassins Creed Templars: Black Cross” is 5 issues of Jazz Age Shanghai mayhem by Mr. Dennis Calero and myself currently available from Titan. It’s great historical adventure/mystery in the AC world, check it out.
Brian Cronin: Plug other stuff!
Fred Van Lente: “Generation Zero” is currently on-going from Valiant (at least for the next five months).
Fred Van Lente: Coming soon: “Z-Nation: Black Summer,” written by the show’s co-creator Craig Engler and me from Dynamite not too far into 2017. A NEW Marvel project that they wouldn’t let me announce today because they didn’t want it to get lost in the X-Rollout (which made sense to me) “Ten Dead Comedian” A Murder Mystery from Quirk Books next July. “Weird Detective” trade paperback from Dark Horse in 2017. That’s it … I think!
Brian Cronin: Plug something for Crystal!
Fred Van Lente: Come see my wife Crystal Skillman’s new play “Open” in February in NYC!
Fred Van Lente: Dennis is writing/drawing “Assassins Creed Templars” right now. Go get it!
Dennis Calero: Thanks, Fred!
Brian Cronin: Thanks, Fred for another awesome Fred Van Lente Day chat!
Fred Van Lente: Thanks, Brian. And most importantly….thanks, Glenn Scarpelli. Wherever you are.
