o/ hello I'm also on the psychonauts braintrain rn - a thought hit me while i was working on something else and that thought was "someone should get Raz (or maybe several of the Aquatos) a service dog." (Let's be real, even if the kid didn't arrive at Whispering Rock with trauma he's surely got it after everything else that's happened to him)

Maybe it's some kind of water dog, like a retriever? So if he accidentally into the water while he's working on something else the dog's there to help him get to shore again.

Or! Or or or it's some kinda big fluffy friend, like a newfoundland or a great pyranese, and either is or will be (imagine he gets it as a puppy) bigger than Raz himself!

imagine he talks to the pupper and talks out everything that happened to him over the course of the games, from his perspective.

I'm still early in my playthrough of Psychonauts 2 (I know what happens, no worries there) but the wiki says Raz himself has Zoolepathy - imagine him talking things through with his service dog and the dog talking back and helping him figure things out.

I will love you forever its like giving a food motivated zoo animal more treats i'm going crazy. throw those fish into my enclosure. This is a great idea! They could have a full service dog or an emotional support companion, both can be taught to perform helpful tasks! Since service dogs need certification and special training the breed can be pretty important to determine what services they can provide.

I adore New Foundlands! They're so, so sweet and are bred water dogs, so they're great for swimming! Bernese Mountain Dogs and Great Danes are other large breeds that also make good service dogs, and mixed breeds are lovely too!

A water dog would be so good for this family, especially if it can rescue drowning people. Imagine tala or queepie holding onto its fur when learning to swim 💞.

They could teach the dog tricks, of course they'd perform at the circus. A herding dog would also be fun. Guiding everyone back to camp, or finding Nona when she wanders off. Larger dogs can perform deep pressure therapy for people with anxiety and PTSD too!

This sweet pet would be so loved. Maybe the family meets them as a puppy at a shelter, and Augustus is remembering the orphanage he was briefly in. Need to stop him from adopting all the dogs there.

Gus needs a quiet moment to sort through his thoughts (have a panic attack) and the dog finds him and lays their head in his lap so he can pet their fur. Tala is scared of a thunderstorm, and the dog ends up curled beside her, soft grumbly snores soothing her to sleep. They fetch psi-cards for Raz, and Frazie and Dion are always competing over their affection with treats.

hello! i'm also someone who is really struggling with the country that i lived in most of my life and plans to move abroad to a specific country, so it's been oddly moving and melancholic seeing you post about the same thing. i was wondering, if you wouldn't mind sharing, how much language plays into it for you? i feel such a disconnect from the language i was raised in, and it is part of my motivations for wanting to move

i had a moment to think about this while tackling my cats and getting ready for bed. i really love this insight and i find it very fascinating! i think it mostly is the opposite for me though, as one of my biggest anxieties about moving abroad is language, and not being able to express my feelings as thoughtfully and casually as i can in my native tongue.

a couple weeks ago i saw my favourite dutch artist (spinvis) live and i shed a little tear over this very thing. the thing with spinvis is, that he writes melancholic (yet with some positive undertone, mostly?) music with lyrics that is based on the most ordinary of ordinary dutch phrases he has heard in every day life. with his work he has managed to come closest to the essence of humanity i have heard any artist be. but the casual, mundane, everyday type of dutch he uses to express all these nuances and meaningful moments with, is that level of language you only master at native speaker level.

and then i got sad because of two fears:

fear one: never being able to express myself in danish in this matter, and not understanding the casual native speaker elements and the tiny details. always being Nearly There but not fully. being alienated over language.

fear two: having someone who loves me and who is important to me, who is unable to grasp the concepts that spinvis for example digs up. not understanding the way my native language can dig deeper into my heart than anything else.

my native language is like breathing. making small talk while ordering food comes easy. i am very jokey and positive and goofy in dutch. and compared to that the danish language makes me feel a bit trapped, because speaking 'monotone' drags some life out of my speech, i tend to over think casual conversation, i feel my energy drained after being among danish all day and i also feel like i cannot make jokes 😭

i have a C1 certificate in danish and most of the danes i have been talking to have been supportive as well, but i have realized over time that danish will never be my dutch in level of comfort.

but what drags me to denmark is just how much it... feels like home to me? and how life is not as fast paced as it is in the netherlands, and how not everything is as structured and controlled. being in denmark lifts something from my shoulders and despite The Anxiety That Comes With Moving Abroad, i feel lighter there. i remember during my first half a year living in denmark, my prof asked me: "how are you doing?" and i replied: "my bike's chain kept flying off, my hands were frozen in my gloves, i waa tired from biking all the hills, but i was still smiling." and tbh, that attitude has never left.

The History of the country..

Denmarks first writings are in 500ad, that is a long time ago and the history surrounding the country can be seen everywhere. Of course you have the Viking era that started in the 9th Centrury and can be seen in towns now such as Aarhus, a walled city that has the most incredible Viking museum! Denmark is situated between Sweden and Germany. Kastrup Airport which is just outside of the city centre is a major hub that accommodates long haul from all over the world and low cost airlines from all over Europe. It welcomes flights for 20 hours in every 24 hour period. In 2019 it hosted 33 million passengers. Denmark is part of mainland Europe and there are international rail routes which link Denmark to all of Northern Europe and Germany.

Denmark has forever been committed to sustainability and being green and although Copenhagen, the countires capital is slowly becoming one of the worlds most innovative city with regards to being eco friendly, the rest of the country is also equally as committed. Naturkraft, they are so committed that in June of 2020 they are openning the worlds first sustainable theme park called A theme park dedicated to the powers of nature is set to open on 50 hectares of former seabed right next to the city of Ringkøbing in West Jutland. Reportedly the world’s first such theme park, Naturkraft seeks to instil in its visitors a greater awareness and appreciation of the powers of nature — and encourage sustainable living.

(1/3) Jelling as a Text: What does It Tell?

The Birth Certificate

Begitulah nama Denmark pertama kali terekam secara tertulis pada sebuah batu. Batu ini merupakan satu dari dua runic stones yang ditemukan di Jelling, yang akhirnya terkenal sebagai birth certificate-nya Kerajaan Denmark. Jelling adalah sebuah kota kecil yang juga terkenal dengan College of Education-nya, sebuah contoh bagaimana sebuah situs bersejarah seluas 12,000 sqm terletak di tengah-tengah kota berpopulasi 3,000an orang, salah satu situs bersejarah yang masuk dalam World Heritage List oleh UNESCO.

Diukirnya nama Denmark pertama kali bersamaan dengan keperluan raja untuk mengenang istrinya, memunculkan interpretasi mengenai posisi pada perempuan pada tahun 950 di lingkungan sosial, yang disebut adornment, atau perhiasan. Penggunaan perspektif terhadap perempuan sebagai media dalam sebuah pernyataan yang sentral, sepertinya adalah upaya mengukuhkan kekuasaan yang aman, dengan cara objectifying women.

Mundur sedikit ke kesan pertama ke situs ini, terdapat penonjolan maskulinitas era Viking di pintu masuk: dinding tinggi, replika perisai, dan gambar prajurit Viking yang gagah di mana-mana. Nama museum untuk situs ini adalah Kongernes Jelling, the Home of the Viking Kings, yang juga menonjolkan dominasi laki-laki dalam narasi sejarah Viking. “King Harald ordered these kumbls made in memory of Gorm, his father, and in memory of Thyra, his mother; that Harald who won for himself all of Denmark

and Norway and made the Danes Christian”

Sebagai pernyataan atas kekuasaannya, Harald menyatakan bahwa ia adalah bagian dari royal family kerajaan Denmark. Selain itu, lewat batu ini, Harald menekankan bahwa ia adalah raja dengan kekuatan yang besar, bahwa ia berkuasa atas Norway dan sekaligus mengubah agama resmi di Denmark dari Pagan ke Kristen. Mengubah agama resmi ini menjadi penting untuk menjalin hubungan diplomatis antara Denmark dengan dominasi negara-negara Eropa, yang dimulai dari hubungan diplomatis antara Harald dengan Otto the Great dari Jerman sebagai Holy Roman Emperor. Hubungan diplomatis ini pun diperkuat dengan pernikahan putranya Harald, Forkbeard, dengan putrinya Otto, Swanhild. Batu ini merupakan wujud dari kooperasi Denmark terhadap kekuasaan Eropa, namun pemilihan kata dan penggunaan huruf pagan ini merupakan penekanan bahwa Denmark masih berdaulat, masih punya kekuasaan atas dirinya sendiri… (dan Norway).

Conversion to Christianity

Dua batu ini terletak di depan gereja paroki dari tahun 1500, yang di bawahnya ditemukan jejak bangunan kayu– kemungkinan gereja sebelumnya yang lebih kecil di tahun 980. Organisasi gereja berkembang di Denmark sejak Harald menyatakan kekristenannya, dimulai dari pembagian Denmark menjadi delapan keuskupan (bishoprics) yang membuat posisi gereja, baik bangunan maupun organisasinya, semakin sentral di tengah masyarakat. Terjadi ledakan pada jumlah pembangunan gereja di Denmark, bahkan masyarakat membayar pajak pada gereja dan biarawan berkeliling untuk menyebarkan agama. Pada tahun 1500an, terjadi reformasi selama 30 tahun, di mana biarawan-biarawan dipenjara dan biara ditutup, bahkan kekayaan gereja disita oleh raja. Setelahnya, Protestan masuk ke Denmark dan pembaptisan sebelum umur 19 tahun diwajibkan sebelum masyarakat bisa menikah atau menjadi godparents. Barulah di awal abad 20, pergerakan gereja paroki dimulai oleh para petani dan tukang kayu. Begitulah gereja yang tersebar di penjuru Denmark mengalami berbagai perubahan, namun gereja senantiasa memiliki posisi sentral dalam kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakatnya.

Gereja paroki Jellings yang dindingnya terbuat dari batu. Pada sebuah lubang di dinding, aku mengintip untuk melihat bahwa ketebalan dindingnya mungkin saja sekitar 30 cm– tebal sekali, seperti gereja romanesk lainnya yang biasanya batanya dibiarkan terekspos.

Symbol of Greatness

Di bawah lantai gereja Jellings, ditemukan sebuah makam dengan sisa jasad seorang pria yang tidak teridentifikasi. Siapapun itu, sisa jasad itu diduga merupakan jasad yang dipindahkan dari gundukan makam (burial mound) tanpa jasad di dekat gereja. Gereja putih ini diapit oleh dua burial mound: satu dibangun oleh Gorm dengan fungsinya sebagai makam, walau ketika ditemukan makam di dalam gundukan ini kosong; satu lagi dibangun oleh Harald tanpa fungsi sebagai makam. Entah apa motifnya, namun gundukan yang dibangun oleh Harald diduga adalah monumen agama pagan, sebagai simbol keberdayaan Harald atas dirinya sendiri walaupun tunduk pada dominasi bangsa Eropa lainnya.

Terdapat tangga untuk naik ke atas kedua burial mound tersebut, namun kebanyakan naik ke bukit utara yang dibangun oleh Gorm, di mana bendera Denmark biasa dikibarkan. Terlihat seorang pengunjung bertopi koboi melihat ke bawah beberapa saat sebelum turun dari gundukan tersebut. Mungkin ia sedang merasakan kebesaran royal family yang saat itu berkuasa. Bagaimana pun, Jelling adalah simbol kekuasaan Harald dan keluarganya.

Dari gundukan tersebut, terlihat dua buah pola yang membentuk perimeter, satu berbentuk elips, dan yang satu lagi berbentuk jajar genjang. Yang berbentuk elips adalah ship setting, jajaran batu untuk jadi tatakan kapal. Jejak ship setting pertama kali ditemukan di bawah gundukan selatan milik Harald pada 1941 dengan posisi meruncing saja, dan berkembang seiring ditemukannya jejak lain di sisi utara kawasan ini.

Yang lebih menggemparkan bagi para arkeolog adalah penemuan jejak palisade pada 1974. Palisade adalah jejak dinding kayu yang rupanya membentuk pola jajar genjang, yang setelah dilakukan dendrokronologi (mengukur umur kayu untuk memprediksi waktu dibuatnya), sesuai dengan linimasa kekuasaan Harald pada tahun 950. Palisade ini sekaligus berfungsi sebagai parameter untuk mendefinisikan batasan situs, sekaligus membantu arkeolog untuk menduga kegunaan dari area ini. Pada perkembangan terkini, diduga kawasan ini adalah kawasan militer, karena selain keberadaan palisade, kawasan ini juga terdapat pada posisi yang strategis di Jutland dan terletak pada dataran tinggi, walau ada pula yang menentang dugaan tersebut karena sebuah kawasan militer tidak mungkin berbentuk jajar genjang, karena sudut runcing merupakan titik lemah untuk keamanan kawasan.

Wujud situs bersejarah yang terletak di tengah-tengah kota, cukup nyentrik karena geometris. Yang jajar genjang adalah jajaran palisade dengan panjang sisi 360 m, yang elips adalah ship setting sepanjang 350 m, dua lingkaran besar itu adalah mount burials yang kosong, dan di antara mereka terdapat gereja putih, yang di depannya terletak dua runic stones.

(2/3) Jelling as an Arena: What Power Relationship Can be Traced?

World Heritage Site

Sebagai syarat untuk gelar World Heritage, situs bersejarah harus memiliki outstanding unique value, yang oleh UNESCO di-breakdown menjadi 11 kriteria. Jelling memenuhi kriteria ke-3 yang menyatakan bahwa Jelling adalah saksi unik dari sebuah peradaban, yaitu pertemuan budaya pagan nordic dan kristenisasi dalam wujud runic stone dan gereja paroki. Dengan disematkannya gelar World Heritage ini pada tahun 1994, budaya pagan nordic dan kristenisasinya tidak hanya menjadi milik Jelling saja, atau tidak hanya menjadi milik Denmark saja, melainkan milik kemanusiaan. Dalam konteks Denmark sebagai negara koloni, menjadikan situsnya sebagai milik bersama merupakan keputusan yang dermawan, namun dalam konteks negara lain yang pernah dijajah (misalnya Greenland), kemudian situsnya diklaim sebagai milik dunia merupakan keputusan yang semena-mena. Mengapa demikian, ya?

Bersama dengan Culture Agency dari UNESCO, Museum nasional merupakan dua badan yang berlaku sebagai stakeholder primer dalam manajemen kawasan ini, selain para pemilik kawasan yaitu Vejle Municipality (pemerintah kota), gereja paroki, dan para dewan khusus. Di luar badan-badan tersebut adalah stakeholder sekunder, yaitu peneliti, organisasi pariwisata, dan College of Education yang terletak tepat di sebelah selatan kawasan. Komunitas lokal tidak termasuk dua golongan tadi, namun kebutuhan mereka tetap terwadahi. Misalnya, keberadaan komunitas bersepeda membuat pengembangan jalur sepeda sebagai salah satu tujuan pembangunan area kota.

Archeology Treasure Hunt

Arkeolog sangat bersemangat untuk menelusuri berbagai misteri dari kawasan ini, misalnya kenapa burial mound tidak memiliki jasad di dalamnya, di manakah entrance kawasan pada palisadenya, dan apakah fungsi dari bangunan ini. Riset menjadi lapangan yang selalu berkembang bagi semua situs bersejarah, sebab interpretasi masa lalu selalu bergerak seiring berjalannya waktu.

Namun, penemuan arkeolog juga mengundang masalah, misalnya pada warna tanah yang berubah ketika palisade asli diekskavasi. Selain itu, pada pengeringan sebuah kolam di Jelling pada 1945 guna menemukan kayu palisade. Pengeringan tersebut menyebabkan air kolam harus direkayasa secara buatan demi menjaga permukaan airnya tetap berada pada level tertentu, agar ekosistem tetap terjaga. Walaupun ekosistem telah dipindahkan ke kolam kompensasi, namun tetap saja kolam yang lama itu tidak dapat ditinggalkan begitu saja karena masih dibutuhkan untuk kepentingan riset lebih lanjut. Muncullah diskusi mengenai preservasi dan ekskavasi kolam, yang manakah dari kedua hal itu yang lebih patut untuk dilakukan? Sebab preservasi memang lebih mahal, namun lebih patut. Disebut patut dalam konteks kolam sebagai natural heritage adalah dengan meninggalkan kondisi aslinya semaksimal mungkin.

(3/3) Jelling as a Performance: What does It Make You Feel?

The Locals

Sebagai pemilik situs, gereja paroki memiliki posisi sentral di Jelling. Di sekitar gereja, terdapat pemakaman warga, yang tahun-tahun kematiannya memang cukup baru. Agama merupakan penghubung masa lalu dengan masa kini, yang menjadikan kompleks Jelling ini dapat secara aktif menjadi bagian dari kehidupan masyarakat sehari-hari. Lalu bagaimana hubungan gereja paroki ini dengan wisatawan?

Seperti permasalahan pada situs bersejarah lainnya, terdapat kondisi bertentangan antara kesakralan area gereja dan wisatawan. Kemarin aku berkunjung di pagi hari, di mana sedang tidak ada aktivitas apa pun di gereja. Namun, kawasan gereja ini memang cenderung tertutup, sehingga masuk ke kawasan gereja ini rasanya seperti diperbolehkan masuk ke rumah orang.

Berbeda dengan gerejanya, Museum Kongernes Jelling terkesan mengundang pengunjung untuk masuk dari pintu masuk yang denahnya cukup straightforward: dari area foyer, sudah terlihat pameran, kafe, hall, dan situs bersejarahnya. Pengunjung bisa menentukan kemana mereka akan berkunjung. Pameran di dalam Museum Kongernes Jelling ini sangat interaktif dan menyajikan informasi secara komprehensif. Pameran sebagus ini dapat dinikmati secara gratis sejak 2006, sama seperti semua museum di Kota Vejle. Setelah mengalami pekan pameran Denmark yang menggratiskan seluruh museum di Denmark, aku memahami bahwa mau tidak mau, pergi ke museum adalah kebutuhan rekreatif yang tidak semua orang butuhkan, sehingga sangat mungkin bahwa wisatawan pergi ke Kongernes Jelling bukan karena rasa ingin tahu, namun karena gratis.

Voluntary fund untuk pengembangan museum, dalam upaya menjadikan museum ini milik masyarakat, milik pengunjung, dan bahkan milik dunia.

World Heritage Status

Selain itu, tidak terlihat banyak warga lokal di sekitar situs bersejarah ini, walaupun situs ini terletak di tengah kota. Bahkan tidak ada mahasiswa berseliweran walaupun posisinya bersebelahan dengan kampus. Dua ruang yang saling mengabaikan ini menunjukkan bagaimana situs bersejarah ini menggusur (displacing) kehidupan yang sedang berlangsung. Segala upaya untuk mempertahankan viking sebagai identitas masa lalu malah berjarak dengan masa kini. Jelling sebagai situs bersejarah menjadi alat untuk menarasikan ideologi terpilih, yaitu nasionalisme, alih-alih memerdekakan masyarakat di sekitarnya.

Akhirnya, yang dirasakan pengunjung yang tidak punya kepentingan dengan identitas tersebut (misalnya, aku sendiri) adalah bahwa situs bersejarah ini mengeksklusifkan dirinya untuk kalangannya sendiri, jauh dari statusnya sebagai “situs kebudayaan milik kemanusiaan”.

Artist Bio:

Here is a taste of something I’ve been working on lately. It’s a track from an upcoming ‘covers album’, which will focus on low-profile independent Australian artists from the 2000's and 2010’s, with a few auxiliary additions.

The original ‘Deep Sea Diver’ was written by Marc Regueiro-McKelvie (AKA Popolice) who was active in Melbourne during the 2000’s and 2010’s, after having relocated from New Zealand.As well as doing Popolice Marc has played in other bands such as New Estate, The Enclosures, Teeth & Tongue, and Jess Ribeiro.

The other artists I’m working on covers by are Small World Experience, Dag, Panel Of Judges, Drunk Elk, TV Colours, Pikelet, Go Genre Everything, Dane Certificate, Grand Prismatic, The Moles, and Dom & The Wizards.

For this album I am going for a clean, warm, and welcoming sound; rather than the more aggressive and fuzzed out sound which I aimed for on my last record. I’ll be playing every instrument and doing all the mixing / mastering / production. It will hopefully be ready for release in September.

明日より5月なので、今後の予定。今年に入って、VARRISPEEDS、Itsuro1×2_6+Topologicalなどのバンドの活動が活発になってきたり、（主に山田邦喜さんからの）お誘いが多かったりで、妙に予定が多く、自分で主催する企画をする余裕があまりなく、というのが最近の傾向のようです。いくつか考えていることは今年の後半に持ち越しになりそう。そんな訳で、5月もソロからスタート、なんですが、初めての試みでリキッドライトとともに演奏をする予定。楽しみです。 ◇2023◇

Woke up at 6.30am and told Siri to wake me up at 7am but woke up around 6.50am. Called my sister and told mommy happy birthday through the phone. Kinda sad that I wasn't there to celebrate her birthday with her but Iiterally don't have the financial capability to go home this year after last year's financially traumatic escapade. My 60 day streak in Wordle has ended today.

Went to work and did a Plastics list with ate Jo and kuya Rex. We ended the morning list around 2pm. 2 fucking PM. I was so not in the mood today to deal with the consultant. Had lunch with Porcia and Dane in the cafeteria and had Costa after.

This afternoon we had clinical governance and my defective eye was trying its hardest to stay awake. Gosh! These things can be so boring but I need the trainings to get my certificates.

I was LD today along with Porcia and Dane. Did a testicular exploration due to torsion. MT is so different from DSU and I don't know where to get what.

Went home early and went to Wendy's and Creams with Porcia and Dane after work. The stuff that we talk about... They don't know how much they're helping me move forward from the things that are keeping me from moving forward with my life. I'm so glad that I've finally found friends like them.

Eddie and I seem to be okay. Still kind of scared for tomorrow. Lots of difficult talking that's going to happen. I'm ready. Washing my clothes now and will sleep right after.

If your pet gets injured or sick, pet insurance helps cover medical expenses. What was once an obscure insurance product has been gaining steam. There are nearly 4 million cats and dogs insured in the U.S., according to the “State of the Industry 2022” report published by the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA). That’s more than double the total number of cats and dogs that were insured in the U.S. in 2017.

Pet insurance might be more affordable than you think. It costs an average of $35 a month for dogs and $28 a month for cat insurance in 2022, according to a Forbes Advisor analysis of pet insurance rates. If you’re wondering if pet insurance is worth it, here are some things to consider.

To determine if pet insurance is worthwhile, it’s good to know what kind of vet bills you could be looking at. Here are examples of average treatment costs, courtesy of Pets Best.

In addition, pet treatment costs are steadily rising. Data from Pets Best shows that the cost of treating a broken bone is up 16% year-over-year for dogs and up 6% YoY year-over-year for cats.

It’s also worth mentioning that some pets are prone to hereditary conditions that could increase their cost of care. For example, large dogs like border collies, Labrador retrievers, Great Danes and German shepherds are more likely to have hip dysplasia, which could cost between $3,500 and $7,000 to treat, sometimes even more, depending on the situation.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Now that you’ve taken a crash course in the cost of caring for a pet, you’ll want to identify what pet insurance covers. A per insurance policy will state the amount the insurance company will pay for medical expenses.

Accident and illness plans typically cover:

Broken bones

Toxic ingestion

Dental illnesses like gingivitis

Chronic conditions like diabetes

Breed-specific conditions like hip dysplasia

Emergency care

Surgery

Disnitic testing

Hospitalization and surgery

Prescription medications

An accident-only pet insurance plan will cover veterinary expenses related to an accident, like a torn ligament or a pet swallowing something poisonous. But an accident-only plan will not cover veterinary expenses related to an illness, like ear infections or cancer.

Some pet insurance insurance plans have the option to add wellness or routine care coverage. This add-on covers expenses like routine check-ups, microchipping, vaccinations and flea/tick prevention.

What Does Pet Insurance Not Cover?

Here are some common pet insurance exclusions:

Experimental treatment. This includes treatments that are considered experimental, investigational and not within the standard of care accepted by the veterinary medical board in your state.

Food, dietary and nutritional supplements. Your pet’s dietary expenses are usually not covered by pet insurance, but some plans cover prescription food and supplements.

Grooming. Services such as baths, dips, nail trims and shampoos are typically not covered by pet insurance.

Non-veterinary expenses. This includes expenses such as any license or certification, compliance with a government rule or regulation (such as a dog license), record access or copying, and waste disposal services.

Pre-existing conditions. This includes illnesses and injuries that your pet had before your coverage started. Some plans do not permanently exclude pre-existing conditions. For example, ASPCA pet insurance covers “curable” pre-existing conditions if your pet has not shown signs or symptoms of certain conditions for 180 days. If the condition recurs after 180 days, it is covered like a new problem.

Pet Insurance Deductibles, Reimbursement and Coverage Caps

When you choose a pet insurance policy, you will choose a deductible amount, which is the amount you pay before pet insurance starts to pay. Common per insurance deductible amounts range from $50 to $1,000. Generally, there are two different types of pet insurance deductibles:

Annual deductible: You’ll be responsible for paying the deductible each policy term. Once your deductible is met during the policy term, you won’t have to pay it again until the next year.

Per-condition deductible: You will pay a deductible for each condition or incident. For example, if your pet has chronic allergies, you would pay a deductible for medical expenses related to that treatment. Once your deductible is met, you won’t have to pay it again for vet expenses related to that condition. However, you will have to pay another deductible if your pet develops a new condition or incident.

You will select a reimbursement level, which is the portion of vet expenses your insurer will pay (after the deductible). Common reimbursement levels are usually 70%, 80% or 90%. However, some insurance companies like Figo will reimburse 100% of your vet expenses.

Your pet insurance company may also let you choose an annual coverage cap, such as $5,000. Some companies like Pets Best, TrustedPals and Spot have unlimited coverage.

What Does Pet Insurance Cost?

Our analysis found the average yearly cost is about $420 for dogs and $336 for cats, based on $5,000 in annual coverage with a $250 deductible and 90% reimbursement level.

Your costs will vary depending on factors such as:

Pet’s breed. Some pets are more susceptible to certain conditions than others. For this reason, it may cost more to insure certain pets. For example, larger dogs usually cost more to insure.

Pet’s age. As pets age they are more susceptible to accidents and illnesses.

Pet’s gender. Female pets may be considered a lower risk, which can result in lower pet insurance premiums.

Location. Vet costs vary by location. If the vet costs are higher in your area, you may pay more for coverage.

So, Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Insurance companies aren’t in the business of paying more out in claims than what they take in in premiums. But that doesn’t mean the odds are always against you. If you get socked with a large, unexpected vet bill, what you’ve paid in premiums can be far less than what you receive in reimbursement. And that’s the main point of insurance: To have financial protection against large disasters.

Here’s one scenario:

Premiums: Suppose you’ve been paying for pet insurance for your dog for three years at about $684 a year. That’s $2,052 so far in pet insurance premiums.

A big vet bill: Then your dog ingests one of your toddler’s toys, which ends up costing $4,000 in vet bills. If you have a $500 deductible and a 90% reimbursement level, your out-of-pocket cost for the incident would be $850 ($500 deductible + 10% of 3,500 = $850).

The result: Adding up premiums for three years and the toy incident, you’ve paid $2,902. Without pet insurance, you would have paid $4,000 for the vet. You’ve avoided paying about $1,100 by having pet insurance.

“What’s important to know is that four out of five pets will have an unexpected emergency. You don’t know if that’s going to come three months or three years after you get your pet,” says Walter Haugland, vice president of marketing of Pets Best. “It’s almost impossible to plan for the unexpected. So, that’s where pet insurance comes in.”

When deciding if pet insurance is worth it, ask yourself:

What are you willing to pay out-of-pocket for vet bills?

How would you pay for costly vet expenses if something did come up, like an accident or an illness such as cancer?

You might have an idea right now of how much you’d be willing to pay in vet bills for an emergency. But if your pet is actually faced with a life or death situation, “you might be willing to stretch the budget further than you ever imagined,” says Haugland.

“Overall, buying pet insurance can give pet owners peace of mind and options so they can make the best care decision possible for a pet, without the financial risk,” Haugland says.

Are Pet Owners Buying Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance has been growing in popularity. There was a 28% increase in total insured pets in the U.S. from 2020 to 2021, according to NAPHIA. Dogs overwhelmingly represent the majority of insured pets (82%) compared to cats (18%).

The rise in pet insurance might be partially attributed to the pandemic. More than three-quarters (78%) of pet owners said they acquired a pet during the pandemic, according to a Forbes Advisor survey. Of the survey respondents, half (50%) said they already had pet insurance while 21% said they plan to buy pet insurance this year.

Alternatives to Pet Insurance

If you’re not interested in purchasing pet insurance, here are some alternatives to pay for your pet’s veterinary care:

Savings account. You can set aside money in a savings account for your pet’s vet bills. The advantage of this strategy is that you won’t pay an annual pet insurance premium. The disadvantage is that you could take a considerable bite out of your savings if your pet suffers a major accident or illness, such as a torn ACL or cancer.

Credit card. You could pay your pet’s vet bill with a credit card. The downside to this approach is that the average credit card interest rate is 16.45%.

Financing. You could borrow money from a bank or lending institution to help pay for your pet’s vet bill. Personal loan rates currently range between 4% to 36%, depending on your lender, creditworthiness and other factors.

Payment plan. You may be able to negotiate a weekly or monthly payment plan with your veterinarian.

Fundraising. You can look into crowdfunding your pet’s vet bills with fundraising platforms such as GoFundMe or Waggle, a pet-dedicated crowdfunding site that sends funds directed to verified veterinarians.

Other alternatives. If you have trouble paying for your pet’s veterinarian bills, ask if your vet accepts Care Credit, a credit card designed for health care expenses, or look into other pet financial aid options. Here is a list of resources from the Humane Society of the United States.
