Christmas in Copenhagen

Denmark is a Nordic country and what happens in the Nordics at Christmas time?  Generally it is cold, dark, wet, probably windy and it is definately one of the most Christmassy places you can visit.

Christmas in Copenhagen is a magical time filled with festive traditions, beautiful decorations, and a cozy atmosphere. The city transforms into a winter wonderland with its streets, squares, and markets adorned with sparkling lights and decorations.

Tivoli Gardens, an iconic amusement park, becomes a center piece for Christmas celebrations in Copenhagen. It's beautifully decorated with thousands of lights, Christmas trees, and stalls selling seasonal treats. Getting Married in Gibraltar in 2024

Gibraltar is always such a special venue that everyone loves..  Renowned throughout the world as a wonderful place for people to marry quickly and easily.  As the marriages are non religious legally binding civil ceremonies that are recognised all over the world it is a wonderful location for all religions, situations, sexuality, and requirements.  You need only stay 36 hours - just enough time to present your documents and then marry. No wonder  it now attracts international and foreign couples from around the world to marry abroad easily, and each day throughout the year people for all corners of the globe are married in these amazing surroundings. If there is space & availability we can organise you a wedding very quickly - within days weeks, although usually for a registry office wedding you need at least 4-6 weeks leadtime. For a speciality wedding there is usually more availability and the registrars are available weekends and evenings. So if you want a Saturday wedding then Speciality is going to be your best option. Mondays in the registry office have best availability as the document presentation is the business day before (the Friday). So for best chance of a fast wedding, if that is what you need, do see if you can make your travel plans work for a long weekend, arrive Thursday night and marry on the Monday. And if you use your time wisely that is all you need you see, hear and make enough memories to last a life time! The country is part of the UK but on the Southern Spanish border. You can fly directly into Gibraltar (interesting fact that our own Leanne's Dad was in charge of rebuilding the runway a few years ago so think of us when you fly in and land safely!). You can also fly directly into Malaga and there is a bus service that leaves regularly to take you to La Linea - which is the Spanish border town of Malaga and it is a 3 minute walk from La Linea into Gibraltar over the walking land border. Or you can very easily drive from Malaga, it is quite often a fraction of the cost to fly into Spain and drive or get a bus to Gibraltar. The weather is tropical and warm all year round as you would imagine from Southern Spain, and it is nice to see Palm Trees and such greenery with tropical plants and flowers. The language spoken is English, but there is a very strong Spanish influence, so it is the best of both worlds with culture, fusions, food, and language. Monkeys are a big part of Gibraltar as they roam freely, and you have got to keep your balcony door closed when staying at The Rock Hotel as they are known to pop in and steal any snacks you have left laying around. Take a cable car up to Mons Calpe and you can see and hold the monkeys yourself. Chill out in the square that is Casemates and have a sangria and some fish n chips for a real UK meets Spain experience! If you like seafood you are spoilt for choice with options as of course Gibraltar is right on the sea! But the locals all head to The Ocean Restaurant For those who are pure carnivores have a look at Gaucho's, where the steaks and sides are really impressive, and it has an awesome atmospheric interior which is a bit like a cave, and there is a really sweet courtyard. If Spice is your thing the place to head is Little Bay, which is famous in Gibraltar for Curries, Cocktails and Spanish/Indian Tapas. This restaurant is also a really firm favourite recommendation from many of our Vegan couples as somewhere to try as there is a wide variety of really nice vegan dishes.

Registry Office

This ceremony is a wonderful simply ceremony in the glorious ceremony room at the registry office, there are multiple appointments here every weekday and you will marry in the cool, calm room away from Main Street with the registrar, guests and witnesses. This is with our "Everything Gibraltar" service that is €795

External Ceremony registrar only

If you are staying at a hotel in Gibraltar or planning a meal or reception in one of the hotels and restaurants that offer a wedding package that you can incorporate in your stay on "The Rock' you can take this option. We will arrange the documents, license, notary, paperwork and the registrar, and we will just let them know where to be at what time, at that point we hand over all the other arrangements to the hotel/restaurant as they are the experts and will ensure that you have everything that you need!

External Ceremony

For some external ceremonies you only need to hire the space for an hour, for example the wonderful Botanical gardens.  In these instances we will arrange the registrar to be there, we will arrange the venue that they are booked and confirmed and all of this is included in the fee. So you can have a wedding in one of these wonderful locations, they are €1495 which includes the venue, registrar, license, documents, booking, marriage certificates. You just turn up at your chosen location and marry! We can also organise you the witnesses if you need.

Getting Married in December

Getting Married in December is very popular, for many reasons!

Summer, is usually busy, for all locations where destination weddings are popular, there are lots of tourists, it can be really hot, and travelling to an from locations can be expensive.

So you could flip the wedding norm and marry in the Winter... So what can we tell you about December weddings... 

December in Denmark

Denmark is a nordic country, in December it is cold, there is every chance that it can snow - which is fantastic! But also it may rain- you can check out the weather HERE.  When you are getting married in Denmark and considering have a wedding photographer, do bear in mind It is dark almost all day, with the sun rising late and setting early daylight hours are limited so when choosing your wedding time, and try to marry earlier in the day. But your wedding photographer can also advise on that.

Remember the Danish word 'Hygge' this is a word for being cosy, well in Denmark this is almost a sport, not just for people dressing, but for bars and restaurants and hotels alike, they excel in making things cosy.  Be it roaring fires, big warm blankets, so you can still sit outside on the terrace, heat lamps.  Big steaming frothy hot chocolates, mulled wine, hearty food that you can have either before or after you take a look around the Christmas markets, ice skate in the open air or simply walk through the towns and cities all 'hygged up'!

It doesn't matter where you decide to marry (take a look at our map here for your options) you can be sure that the scenery will melt your heart and the people will win your heart and even though you are marrying the love of your life and your heart will get bigger, you will, for sure leave a tiny bit of your heart in Denmark!  And that's what we love, people coming back over and over and over to get some more Hygge!

Christmas in Copenhagen is magical with Tivoli being just stunning, having "Gløgg" or "Gluwein" and snuggling up to your soul mate - heaven!

December in Gibraltar

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Gibraltar also has so much to offer in December, it is hot!  But not as hot as it is in the Summer (see my blog here for when I visited in August, I mention the heat quite a lot!).  The sun is generally out every day it is lovely and warm in the afternoon, warm enough to see the sights with only a t-shirt and have amazing lighting for some wonderful photographs.  Please see the average weather here, a lovely 18degrees, how perfect it that!

You can got to the beach, have lunch outside in the wonderful Catalan Bay, or explore the rock or have a coffee on casemates square out of the blazing Spanish sunshine.

So if its a sunshine wedding that you want but don't want the business or the heat of the Summer, Gibraltar is a perfect choice!

The Danish International Marriage Certificate

The Danish International Marriage Certificate

When you get married in Denmark you will be issued with 2 copies of the Danish International  Marriage Certificate straight after your ceremony by the registrar.  The Marriage certificate is International, and as you will notice, each section and all information is recorded in English, German, Danish, Spanish and French. This document of course is a very important part of the process and all couples need this document in order to register their marriage and complete a variaty of different administrational proceedures from name changes to residency permits and spousal VISA applications.   

So you know what exactly will be included, we have run through the document section by section for you, there are 4 sections to the marriage certificate: Top or first section This includes - Date of your marriage - Your wedding file number - The venue you married at

Second Section of the Marriage certificate This includes 1) Current legal Surname of party 1 2) Current first and middle names of party 1 3) Date of Birth 4) Country of Birth

Third section of the Marriage Certificate This includes 1) Current legal Surname of party 2 2) Current first and middle names of party 2 3) Date of Birth 4) Country of Birth

Fourth and final section of the marriage certificate This includes - The venue you married at and address - The date of the wedding - The name and wet signature of the registrar - The official stamp or seal of the venue you married at.

General appearance The marriage certificate is a single A4 page in size, with nothing recorded on the back - which is where the Apostille is added if you request or require the Legalisation to be done on the document.  

* General FAQ questions and answers When do I receive my marriage certificates? You get them straight after the wedding from the registrar. What if there is a spelling mistake or error on them? This is easily put right, just check the certificates and the registrar can have them corrected and re-issued whilst you are there. Or they are posted onto you if you notice when you get home.

What Languages are my certificate issued in?

The certificate is issued in a multi-lingual format this means that it is already written in Danish, English, German, French and Spanish.

Where is the original kept?

The certificate is issued on the day of the ceremony and is stamped and signed by the registrar that has married you.  The details of the certificate, and the original signed document are then entered into the Danish Wedding Archives and they are then stored there for 100 years.

Extra copies

If in the future you need more copies then this is easily done by request to the town hall and they will post them to you.

Name change

You always marry in your legally recognised name at the time of your marriage as shown on your photo ID travel documents. The marriage certificate gives you legal permission to change your name to your partners after the wedding. Do I need to register my marriage? Yes you will need to register the wedding back home in your local office of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Can I request the second page document with the witness names on? Yes this can be requested and a scan or document sent to you if required.

Do I need to Legalise my marriage certificate? The marriage certificate is Legally recognised Worldwide, but for use in some countries you may be asked for the full, further, optional level of Legalisation a certificate called an Apostille. This is very easy to obtain, and can be done at anytime, and it is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen and fixed to the back of the certificate. Where can I get married in Denmark near the German border?

Many couples with links to Germany, such as one or both parties may be Resident, Citizen, Visiting, Tourist, Students. You can marry in Denmark as a Tourist, turn up marry and leave the same day - which makes getting married in Denmark near the German border a popular choice. Which does mean you will have to start planning a little further in advance, or you will need to be flexible on which Town Hall in Denmark you marry.

The most popular Venue is Tonder, they have ceremonies on a Tuesday and Thursday, with document presentation the same day of the wedding. This venue is the most popular wedding venue in Denmark, so you need to have your license at least 3 months ahead of the date you would like to marry. And you will still need to be flexible on date. We then have Ribe & Esbjerg - They have ceremonies for International couples on a Friday (in alternating locations Ribe/Esbjerg) if you need witnesses to be provided, and then also a Saturday if you are able to take 2 of your own witnesses. Ideally you will need 4-6 weeks from date of your license to the ceremony day you would like. Sonderborg is a great option and can be faster than the 2 venues above, as the document presentation is on the Thursday, and they only have ceremonies on a Friday. It is advised you are driving if you look at this venue as the document presentation location and ceremony locations are about 20 minutes drive apart. Witnesses are provided and it is advised you allow 3 weeks (minimum) from date of issue of license to the wedding date you would like. Kolding/Christiansfeld - This is a very popular venue and they have ceremonies 7 days of the week. Document presentation is business day of the wedding UNLESS you are marrying on a Saturday or Sunday and then the document presentation is on the Friday. Witnesses are provided 7 days a week. And document presentation is always in Kolding, which is about a 30 minute drive from Christiansfeld, so it is advised to drive, or get a taxi from Kolding. Generally space 3 weeks from issue of your license. Aabenraa - this fantastic venue has ceremonies every weekday, with document presentation just before the wedding at the same location. Witnesses are provided but you will find there is faster availability and more date choice if you are able to take 2 of your own witnesses. You can generally marry in around 2 weeks (maybe faster, it is seasonally dependant) from issue of license. Fredericia - a lovely venue which has flexible dates depending on when the Mayor and registrars can marry you, a lovely option if you are very flexible on date and want a very Danish wedding experience. Document presentation is same day as the wedding. And generally a date around 4+ weeks from date of license being issued. What documents are required to marry in Denmark

Marriage requirements in Denmark may vary depending on your nationality and specific circumstances, but here are the general documents commonly needed for non-residents to get married in Denmark: Documents everyone needs   - Valid Passport or EU ID card - which need at least 3 months validity from the date of your marriage. - Some relationship evidence, to show longevity and contact, which can be photos, screen shots of dated messages, whatever you have. Getting Married in December

Getting Married in December is very popular, for many reasons!

Summer, is usually busy, for all locations where destination weddings are popular, there are lots of tourists, it can be really hot, and travelling to an from locations can be expensive.

So you could flip the wedding norm and marry in the Winter... So what can we tell you about December weddings... 

December in Denmark

Before we start, please can we just highlight that Denmark is a nordic country, in December it is cold, more than likely it will rain, there is every chance that it can snow.  It is dark almost all day, with the sun rising late and setting early daylight hours are limited so when choosing your wedding time and your photographer please remember this.

However all these things can bring us to the most sensational wedding pictures and memories.  Remember the Danish word 'Hygge' this is a word for being cosy, well in Denmark this is almost a sport, not just for people dressing, but for bars and restaurants and hotels alike, they excel in making things cosy.  Be it roaring fires, big warm blankets, so you can still sit outside on the terrace, heat lamps.  Big steaming frothy hot chocolates, mulled wine, hearty food that you can have either before or after you take a look around the Christmas markets, ice skate in the open air or simply walk through the towns and cities all 'hygged up'!

It doesn't matter where you decide to marry (take a look at our map here for your options) you can be sure that the scenery will melt your heart and the people will win your heart and even though you are marrying the love of your life and your heart will get bigger, you will, for sure leave a tiny bit of your heart in Denmark!  And that's what we love, people coming back over and over and over to get some more Hygge!

Christmas in Copenhagen is magical with Tivoli being just stunning, having "Gløgg" or "Gluwein" and snuggling up to your soul mate - heaven!

December in Gibraltar

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Gibraltar also has so much to offer in December, it is hot!  But not as hot as it is in the Summer (see my blog here for when I visited in August, I mention the heat quite a lot!).  The sun is generally out every day it is lovely and warm in the afternoon, warm enough to see the sights with only a t-shirt and have amazing lighting for some wonderful photographs.  Please see the average weather here, a lovely 18degrees, how perfect it that!

You can got to the beach, have lunch outside in the wonderful Catalan Bay, or explore the rock or have a coffee on casemates square out of the blazing Spanish sunshine.

So if its a sunshine wedding that you want but don't want the business or the heat of the Summer, Gibraltar is a perfect choice!

Danish Wedding Traditions

Here are some traditions and facts about Danish weddings.

When we think of Danish Wedding Ceremonies we think of International couples marrying in stunning town halls, elopement style weddings, Vikings, Herring and boats!

However as every country Denmark has lots of traditions in their wedding ceremonies.  Maybe if you marry in Denmark then you can adopt one as a nod to the wonderful country that has made your marriage possible!

"Gate of Honour"

On the wedding day an archway known as "gate of honour" ("æresport") is placed around the door to the bride's home.  This is made of pine branches and flowers.  This is prepared by friends and family members and it is re-created on the day of the 25th Wedding Anniversary.

Wedding Dress

A Danish bride traditionally wears a white wedding dress and a veil. The bride will also wear something in red as red symbolises Love in Denmark and it wards off evil spirits.  The bridal bouquet is also always bought and chosen by the groom.

Wedding Shoes

The groom should not buy the wedding shoes for his bride. She must get them by herself. She should not sell them after the wedding - they are kept and treasured as heirlooms.

The Ceremony

Wedding ceremony can be held in church or in a town hall.  The bride and father will always be the last to arrive.  After the wedding ceremony - rice is thrown at the newlyweds as it symbolises fertility.

The Reception

This is always managed by a toast master. There are several speeches made during the wedding reception always starting with the father of the bride.

There is lot of singing and laughing. People often change the lyrics of a famous song so it relates to the newlyweds. Such lyrics are printed and given to the guests so everyone can sing.

The Bride Dance

This is a waltz the Danish believe that "brudevals" must be danced before midnight. The music for the waltz is from the ballet "A folk tale" (1854) by the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817-1890). While dancing the couple is surrounded by the guests. They slowly getting closer towards the couple in time for them to kiss at the end of the Waltz.

The Grooms Dance

Straight after the waltz all the male guests will then take off their socks!  The best man will cut the end of his socks off, this tradition has two different meanings for different people the first reason is to stop the groom ever being interested in any other woman.  The second is so the wife repairs the sicks to prove that she will be a goo/d wife (please remember this is tradition and not personal thoughts!)

The Brides Veil

Bride's veil is then destroyed by the guests.  This is to show that there is no need for it anymore.

The Cake

The traditional wedding cake called "kransekage" is cut by the couple sometime around midnight. Each guest must get a slice. Otherwise the couple will have a bad marriage. The "kransekage" is often decorated with small Danish flags.  For pictures of the cake please see our pinterest board.

The Stamping

This is where a guest starts stamping on the floor the other guests join him or her. The newlyweds then hide under a table and kiss.

Silverware

This tradition can get very noisy especially if it is later on in the evening after the cocktails and wine have been served!  Guests take the silverware and start hitting glasses or plates. That is the sign that the bride and groom have to stand up on chairs and kiss.

The Kissing

Kissing plays an important role in the wedding as you can tell by the stamping and the silverware.  Every time the bride has to go to the toilet all the female guests have to rush and kiss the groom.  This is the same when the groom goes all the men have to kiss the bride.

Where Can I Get Married without a Single Status document

Getting documents can be a really frustrating process, in a world where technology is changing almost every aspect of our everyday life.  The beaurocracy of some government departments all over the world is slow and frustrating.  Meaning that we have to sit back and wait sometimes for various documents to arrive from various offices before making any plans. What is a Schengen Visa and why may I need one to marry in Denmark?

A Schengen visa is a visa that allows you to travel and enter all 26 Schengen countries with one visa.  If you are not sure if you need a Schengen visa then please see this page.

The 26 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

These countries abolished the need for passport controls at their mutual boarders, therefore if you apply for and receive a Schengen visa you can move freely between these countries for the validity of your visa. Just check the conditions of your Schengen VISA, and make sure you are aware of all restrictions like entry needs to be made through the country of issuing state, or the majority of your Schengen stay is in the country of issuing state.

The standard multi state visa will allow you to travel and stay in all countries in the Schengen zone for the allotted period as outlined on the VISA - and there are a variety of timeframes, so make sure you get the right one! A multi schengen will of course allow entry into Denmark, and the license of marriage will only be valid for you get married within the period of the VISA (but of course once you are married you are married until Divorce/Death)

There are many types of Schengen visa so when applying you have to make sure that you apply for the correct visa because if the wrong visa is issued then you will have to go through the process again.

Applications can be made through any Embassy of a member state.

Type A - This is an airport transfer visa and allows you to enter the airport of a Schengen country to transfer onto another flight, but it does not allow you to stay in the Schengen area.

Type C - This is a short stay visa and allows the holder to stay in the Schengen Area for the length of validity on the visa, this is then divided into;

- Single Entry - You can enter the Schengen Area one time and stay for the validity of the visa, this can be for any amount of days up to 90 days.

- Double Entry - You can enter the Schengen Area two times, however you can NOT overstay the total days mentioned on the visa

- Multiple Entry - You can enter the Schengen Area as many times as you like during the validity of the visa.  This visa is usually issued on a one year, two year or 5 year validity.  Allowing the holder to stay a maximum of 90 days in every 180 day period.

Limited Territorial Validity Visa - This allows you to only stay in the country where the visa was issued, therefore it does not allow you to travel from country to country.

Type D - This is a national visa and works the same as a residence permit, this is usually issued to students or those on work placements.  These can be issued as a single entry visa or a multiple entry visa.  In order to obtain one of these visas you have to meet one of the following criteria;

-An international student program will grant a visa for a period of no more than one year.

-An international student that is about to start a full course of studies in one of the Schengen countries. Again the visa is issued for a period of one year with the possibility of extending it.

-A pedagogical work at a higher institution or research centre in any of the Schengen countries, regarding the person and its close family members.

-A professional who is traveling in any of the Schengen countries due to its expertise be it a sportsman, an artist or any other professional of its kind with the purpose of sharing its expertise.

-Emergency cases as a medical condition that prevents the individual leave the Schengen Area at the designated time frame.

One thing that you have to be careful of with a visa is the difference between the validity of the visa and the duration of stay, as they are two very different things!

Duration of Stay – is the maximum of days you are permitted to remain in the Schengen. The first day you enter Schengen is counted as “Day 1”, even if you enter just a few minutes before midnight. Whereas, the “Last Day” is counted the day you leave Schengen, even if it is just a few minutes after midnight. 

Visa Validity – on the other hand, is the period of time from which to which you can use your visa to enter and stay in the Schengen Area.

As of the 2nd February 2020 there are a number of changes to the application process, 2 of the major changes being that you can now apply for your visa 6 months in advance of the trip, the minimum application time is 15 days.  Also the fee has increased and will now cost 80€ per application.
