total drama cast ranked by how much i want to smoke with them
would feel actively bad making this guy smoke
24 alejandro already weird about food and his body in a not eating preservatives or dyes way i do not think he would smoke or drink. he would do cocaine but that’s not what we’re asking. wouldn’t participate and would have a bad time if he did. would be number one if the question was which total drama character do i want to talk to about orthorexia. also wayyy too much of a dick to be a good trip sitter he’d start trying to hypnotise me or some shit
23 trent i cannot imagine weed would make his paranoia less debilitating which sucks because i feel like all his friends smoke. cool guy not a stoner would hang out with him sober unless he brought his guitar
nightmare blunt rotation
22 cody brags a lot about how much he smokes and how much of a total nonevent this is for him takes one drag and coughs so hard he throws up. bad time for everyone
21 duncan keeps mentioning that he did ket before he came because he knew your shit was going to be weak as if you didn’t hear him (he doesn’t think you reacted enough the first time). just kind of an asshole
20 justin opposite to alejandro in one important way which is that i think he absolutely smokes. however i think weed would make him even more intolerable i think he’d be a buzzkill and kind of mean
whatever
19 izzy keeps describing the crazy horrific ‘hallucinations’ she’s having to try to freak everyone out and successfully convinces owen he can also see them. may or may not actually be high. only not in nightmare because i think if she did smoke she’d be relatively mellow
18 beth trying too hard to be funny acting way more out of it than she is. would annoy me i think
17 katie and 16 sadie would be whispering to each other the whole time and not really mixing with the rest of the group. they’d giggle until they had an incomprehensible falling out. they would still leave together
15 owen on paper ideal he’s chill he’s put more thought into the snacks than he has the weed. however i know he’d be farting constantly and apologising but still doing it and it would piss me off so bad i’d have to leave
14 sierra would be very giggly and her infodumping would be plagiarised from a video essay i watched last week. i would not call her out on it
13 noah ‘this is garbage i don’t feel anything’ -> catatonic
12 ezekiel not allowed to smoke weed but if he did it would change absolutely nothing about his behavior. this one’s just whether i would hang out with ezekiel and honestly i would
11 heather would get a headache and get snippy but i think she both has smoked before and would be pretty mellow. total middle of the road she’s fine
sure
10 gwen would be cool if i could talk to her about her art and bugs and dali but if she got one text from duncan or courtney or trent i think she would enter a paranoia death spiral. i would have to hide her phone
9 eva i think she’d be quiet but chill. inoffensive i think it would do her good
8 tyler would have a good time i think he’d be funny but would manage to grievously injure himself and then we’d be stoned in the emergency room and he’d panic
7 geoff cool guy definitely knows a guy but i think he’d be too much. i’d be greening out and he’d be crossfaded stood on the table. would be willing to put up with him for bridgette’s sake
6 courtney would tell me several times about how letting loose on one day actually allows her to be sharper and more productive for the rest of the week before going nonverbal. that’d be cool with me i know she needs it
5 leshawna she’s cool i want to talk to her about what she’s got going on. would stay relatively level-headed though i think she’d be annoyed by anyone acting up
dream blunt rotation
4 lindsay honestly can’t see a downside here. she would have a sparkly pink bong i would definitely smoke with lindsay
3 dj don’t think he smokes much but would socially. just a cool guy probably homemade food for the sesh. ideal
2 harold i want to watch star wars with harold stoned soooo bad. i’d let him infodump about the medieval summer camp he went to last year
1 bridgette chill into crystals and spirituality objective best choice. all her snacks are vegan she would smoke on the beach. nice and funny also only contestant i think was actually stoned on the show

Monthly reggae disco in North-East London. The night is named after sadly departed MC Earl Anthony Robinson, the voice behind classic deejay tunes such as “Drunken Master”.
For our July session we’ve got something slightly different to the usual dance, this month we've got something to feed your head AND your feet when we welcome writer and researcher Edward George to Walthamstow.
Edward’s radio show The Strangeness of Dub on Morley College Radio is a truly essential listen - it dives into dub, versions and versioning, drawing on critical theory, social history, a deep and broad musical selection, and live dub mixing.
Edward will be in conversation with Paul Rekret about these topics and more at the start of the night, before taking to the decks to play some of the selections discussed.
The Strangeness Of Dub show is described as follows:
"Dub is strange. A musical process and a sub-genre formed in the early 1970s and pioneered by Clement Dodd, Sylvan Morris, Lee Perry, King Tubby, Scientist, Jah Shaka and The Mad Professor, dub takes place through a kind of violence, an act of reducing archival audio documents to fragments and traces, yet is associated, in its sound system context, with communal reverie and meditative states.A marginal music and a music of margins, first and most enduringly located on the ‘b side’, the underside, of phonographic recordings, dub is a sub genre of reggae music, subordinate and secondary to song-writing, musical performance and recording. And yet more so than reggae song writing, vocal or musical performance, dub’s influence reverberates across other genres of electronic music, even while never quite comprising a genre of its own."

Edward George is a writer and broadcaster. Founder of Black Audio Film Collective, George wrote and presented the ground-breaking science fiction documentary Last Angel of History (1996). George is part of the multimedia duo Flow Motion, and the electronic music group Hallucinator (Chain Reaction).
Paul Rekret is a researcher and teacher in political and cultural theory. He is associate professor of politics at Richmond American International University, London, and is author of numerous publications including Down With Childhood: Pop Music and the Crisis of Innocence (Repeater, 2017), as well as being a contributor to The Wire and London Review Of Books amongst others.

SO…. slight cw for dr*g mention but it won’t be graphic (and i’ve been clean from this specific stuff for years and from everything for a lil over 8 months 🫶) when i was a teen my main friend group went thru my 1d phase w me and for my 19th bday we all dropped acid and listened to 1d while vibing out but long story short things went sideways for me (i’m still not totally sure why) and despite having never hallucinated before, i thought all my friends were the members of 1d trying to Get At Me and shit got scary but ! i have since repaired the trauma this caused w myself and all those friends, and my main bestie from that group is now a dj in berlin and she dj’d my 24th bday party over zoom (bc covid) and without telling me she sent everyone harry styles masks and they all pulled em out when she slid a harry song into her mix and i nearly pissed myself laughing. it was so funny and cathartic and a very full circle moment that healed that strange time in my life tbh so….. I like chilling out in bookstores more bc I feel like Constantly Judged by the employees at the record stores I’ve been to but I do love listening to the random shit they play in record stores and finding old gems I’d forgotten about so… let’s say it depends on the mood?

HEALTH AND WELLNESS: HEALTHY SLEEP FOR A HEALTHY SOUL
Sleep deprivation is one of the prevalent problems that our society faces right now, for it touches not just one but different aspects of life. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2008), the amount of sleep a person needs varies from one individual to another. Most adults must sleep about seven to eight hours every night to feel well-rested. Teenagers must have nine hours of sleep every night, and children need nine hours of sleep or more, depending on their age. In a survey conducted in 2016, it was discovered that the Philippines has the highest sleep deprivation rate in Asia. It showed that 46% of the Filipino population does not get enough sleep, while 32% claimed they slept for only six hours. Sleeping is a basic human need, like eating, drinking, and breathing. Like these other needs, sleeping is vital for good health and well-being throughout your lifetime.
There was a case back in 1959 wherein a famous radio DJ, Peter Tripp, went through a 200-hour no-sleep publicity stunt which gathered a lot of attention by netizens. Although he was able to do it successfully, the health consequences of his action were severe, such as intense hallucinations and headaches. This incident only proves that sleeping is essential in human life. Sleep is a state wherein it decreases a person's awareness of an environmental stimulus (Mandal, 2019). It has two main types: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. The electroencephalogram (EEG) shows that rapid eye movement is a paradoxical state of sleep wherein a brain appears to be awake, but an individual is in a deep sleep. On the other hand, non-rapid eye movement is an orthodox state of sleep that lacks motor activity. The electroencephalogram (EEG) shows that the brain appears calm (Memar & Faradiji, 2018). Without a proper amount of sleep, it can affect a person's cognitive performance, attention, memory, and logical reasoning. Furthermore, this may lead to depression, anxiety, and poor well-being among individuals, especially students (Hershner & Chervin, 2014).
Sleep deprivation is common among students. A worldwide statistic shows that 97% of teenagers get less than recommended sleep each night (Rodriguez, 2015). Furthermore, a study by Hershner and Chervin (2014) states that irregular sleep schedules are highly prevalent among students, and 87% believe that insufficient sleep affects their academic performance. The increasing rate of sleep deprivation concerns all educational institutions, for it affects one's physical and mental health that and allows more risk to health problems and behavioral changes in students.
Working and moving around for a whole day requires rest to be able to recover the energy that was lost. This can be explained through Oswald's (1980) Restoration Theory of Sleep. It states that sleep allows the human body to repair and rejuvenate itself. It restores and revitalizes the physiological processes that keep the body healthy and the mind functioning correctly. It also explains that to successfully undergo different body vital functions like muscle growth and tissue repair, the person must have enough rest. A few reasonable shreds of evidence have also supported this theory. Experiments were also conducted to prove this theory, and results show that sleep strengthens the body's immune system.
Sleep is a basic necessity for a student’s life.
Humans need at least 8 hours of sleep to maintain a healthy body. According to a journal article by Ming et al. (2011), sleep is inevitable, and humans need to have a good quality of sleep to live and perform typically. Sleep is essential for physical growth, helps in aiding with the interest of a learner to listen and participate in class, and also, sleep is an excellent way to relax after a long day at school. According to Holmes (2016), having a good quality type of sleep helps one to remain sharp and alert. Also, it was stated that it helps improve learning and problem-solving skills.
Lack of sleep and sleeping disorders can lead to serious, life-threatening consequences. That is why this is an issue that everyone should be aware of.
As a result of accepting sleep deprivation as the norm, many people experience sleep problems. Instead of getting more sleep, people cope with being tired by consuming coffee or energy drinks, napping, or just "powering through."
HOW TO OVERCOME SLEEP DEPRIVATION?
Have a consistent sleep schedule:  Even on weekends, you should try to sleep and wake up at the exact times every day. Schedule a time to obtain enough sleep while scheduling those times. Once you have created your routine, stick to it religiously. Maintaining consistency in your sleep schedule can help you prevent nocturnal sleep changes.
Set boundaries being a student and social life: It can be easy for the demands of your personal or student life to chip away at your dedicated time for sleep, so it is helpful to set boundaries to preserve the full time you need for rest each night.
Have a bedtime routine: Every night, prepare yourself by following the same routine: cleaning your teeth, putting on pajamas, reading quietly, and stretching. You can get in the appropriate frame of mind to sleep soundly every night with a consistent bedtime ritual.
Customize Your Bedroom Environment. Design your bedroom environment to be ideal for your relaxation. You are less likely to avoid going to bed if your sleep setting is inviting and suits your comfort preferences.
Avoid Things That Can Interfere With Sleep:
Electronic devices: Your mind can be stimulated by TVs, smartphones, tablets, and laptops, keeping you awake when you should be sleeping. These devices' light emissions may also mess with your circadian clock. Therefore, it is preferable to refrain from using electronics for at least one hour before bed.
Alcohol: Alcohol use, especially late at night, might interfere with your regular sleep cycle and lower the consistency and quality of your rest.
Caffeine: It is advised to avoid consuming caffeine in the afternoon and evening because it is a stimulant and can stay in your system for several hours.
Naps: Keep naps under 30 minutes and avoid taking them in the late afternoon or evening to prevent them from interfering with nighttime sleep.
Make the Most of the Day. A healthy circadian rhythm, which keeps you awake during the day and asleep at night, is supported by getting plenty of exposure to sunshine throughout the day. Getting regular exercise might help you maintain a regular sleep schedule, so make an effort to work out every day.
As a student, I urge you all to rest and get some sleep. Always keep in mind that resting is acceptable. You need to manage your time effectively if you don't want to suffer from sleep deprivation. You all are being warned to STOP sleep deprivation because it can negatively impact both your physical and emotional health. Keep your body in good condition while you're still young to avoid regretting it afterward. Sleep is the best form of meditation, and there is nothing wrong with it. A good night's sleep is often cited as the "best bridge between despair and hope." Schedule regular "me time" to allow yourself to unwind.
In particular, I hope this blog will help my fellow students who are having trouble sleeping understand how vital sleep is. You can accomplish it; I'm sure of it! Always have faith in yourself, and get some rest for a brighter day ahead. I'm Margha Stefhanee B. Campecino once more, and I always adhere to the motto "HEALTHY SLEEP FOR HEALTHY SOUL."

Pokemon SWSH - Raihan x Piers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title : HEART☆BEAT☆DROP
Rating : E
Number of chapters/words : 8/92k
Status : Complete
Resume : “The music fleeing the speakers is familiar. Beyond familiar, it's recognizable, and he recognizes it because it's his own damn song! His music, playing in a bloody nightclub. He's not hallucinating, he's not that drunk, this is real. Real and downright offensive, because this is the last place anyone should hear his style. His shit's above being played at a place like this alongside the rest of the club trash. He's still got some pride left, damn it all, and he won't let this mockery stand.Piers snarls, ready to shove away from the bar, but the beat changes, and the recognizable fades back to merely familiar. The riff of guitar is split through with a surge of foreign synths. The tempo picks up and drums that aren't his own define an energy he never intended. This isn't only his song. It's a remix. Someone's made a remix of his music.“
Review : This one is a masterpiece. I know I can be very enthusiastic when talking about works I liked but my enthusiasm is proportional to the quality of this fic.
I would qualify this one as a slowburn, a REALLY slowburn and I’m not saying this in a bad way. Some slowburns I read were simply boring because there was like... nothing going one in the relationship between the two protagonists, no progression and BAM they are together. This one is NOT. There is a real progression in the feelings of both Piers and Raihan, the author gave them both a real identity. One of the major point of this work is its realistic aspect (I loved that). By reading, you learn to know Piers and Raihan, their fears, their wants... They become like friends to you and that’s thanks to, imo, the amazing writings skills the author uses to depict feelings. This alternative universe is quite good too and, even if I couldn’t really imagine Raihan as a DJ at the beginning, it was easier and easier while reading.
Well, I’ll let you get a shot at it, you won’t be disappointed ! Now, I’ll retreat to my chambers to think about how sappy this fic made me and how I would like to hear the collab between these two boys !

songxiao (modern AU), one of 8/14/28?
28. They ask you to pretend to be their date at a bar to prevent an ex from talking to them.
**********
Of all the times Xiao Xingchen’s been dragged out to a bar, this certainly isn’t the worst. That dubious honor belongs to the night Xue Yang found out he would not, in fact, be coming back next semester, and decided the solution was to drink until he was borderline hallucinating, and then try to fight everyone in his general vicinity. The night ended with Xiao Xingchen sitting in urgent care with a concussion, and also with Xue Yang arrested.
That was the worst night, and also the beginning of the I’m not responsible for bailing you out agreement that preserved what was left of their friendship, which is the only reason why Xiao Xingchen agreed to come out for Xue Yang’s birthday. He’s only planning to stay until the rest of Xue Yang’s friends arrive, and he can slip away with no one the wiser. Especially not the birthday boy, who has a bottle of something called Malört he keeps threatening to make Xiao Xingchen drink.
Having Googled it earlier, Xiao Xingchen would like to make his escape before Xue Yang just shoves a shot glass into his face. Of all the things to make alcohol from, who thought wormwood was a good idea? He tried to explain that to Xue Yang an hour ago, which led to Xue Yang drinking straight from the bottle while maintaining eye contact and — honestly, Xiao Xingchen didn’t know what he expected.
Now he sits at the bar, watching his friend yell requests at the DJ and eat a terrifying amount of vodka-infused gummy bears, and wonders, not for the first time, if this is the night Xue Yang’s liver will go on strike.
If it does, their agreement also includes a clause about Xiao Xingchen not having to deal with the mess — but he will, if it comes to that, and Xue Yang knows it.
He sighs and turns back to his sketch. If Xue Yang catches him at it, there’s no end to the amount of teasing he’ll get for drawing, at a bar, like a fucking hipster, but there’ll be a compliment or two hidden in the mix, too. They’re friends, after all, if sometimes grudgingly.
The bar’s almost too dark to make out the rough outline of what might, someday, be a sword, but Xiao Xingchen doesn’t mind. With the music pounding against his ears, and his pen moving smoothly over the paper, he’s more relaxed than he has been in weeks. Maybe he’ll stay a little longer, nurse another glass of wine. Just until the sketch is done, and the image that woke him that morning will be trapped on paper, instead of in his head.
A moment before he signals for another glass, someone drops heavily onto the stool next to his.
“I’m so sorry,” says a cool, pleasant voice, close to his ear. “But could you please pretend I just said something hilarious?”
Xiao Xingchen looks up, blinking hard at the source of the voice — which turns out to be a very tall, solid-looking man with a stern face, with long hair swept back from his face. “Uh?” he says, with a nervous laugh. He hates that this is his stress reaction, but the man relaxes, fractionally, before leaning in again.
“Like that, yeah. God, thank you — oh, shit, could you do it again? I’m so sorry.”
“I’m having trouble understanding what’s going on,” Xiao Xingchen says, through another laugh. “But — okay. I can do that.”
Well, he tries. Xue Yang never tags him in on any of his pranks these days because they’ve both learned, through long, painful experience, that Xiao Xingchen has no poker face and no acting ability whatsoever. So, when he tries to laugh, he knows it looks stilted, and awkward, and is definitely too loud, even for the raucous bar.
But then the man sitting next to him smiles — a tiny thing, his mouth barely curving — and abruptly his weak, awkward laughter turns into something real. Something warm, and unexpected; almost relieved, though Xiao Xingchen isn’t sure why that word occurs to him, or why it feels so right.
“Sorry,” says the man, propping an elbow on the bar and leaning his head on his fist. He hasn’t stopped smiling, and he hasn’t stopped looking at Xiao Xingchen either. His regard feels like the sweet spot between the second glass of wine, and the third: warm, and peaceful, like waking up to full morning sunlight. “Feel free to tell me I’m an idiot, but my ex is here, and if he got me alone, it’d be a mess. So I just thought —”
“You needed a distraction.” A little of the warmth fades as Xiao Xingchen nods. He understands — it’s not like people approach him at the best of times, and a noisy dive bar is not the best of times — but it does sting, a little, to know he was just convenient. He tears his eyes away, ready to go back to his sketch now that his purpose is served, but the man leans in again.
“What I needed was a co-conspirator,” he whispers. This time, his breath washes against the side of Xiao Xingchen’s throat, and it takes every bit of his self-control not to shiver. “Let me buy you a drink to say thanks.”
“Co-conspirator?” Xiao Xingchen looks back, half-smiling, and freezes. He sees — he sees a tall man, with long hair and a stern face, dressed in dark grey and black, and then his eyes burn, not with tears but heat, and he curls in on himself, something tugging at the edge of his mind.
“Hey, are you — are you okay?” He looks up and finds the man staring at him, concern starkly written across his face. “Say something,” the man adds, when Xiao Xingchen just stares at him, blinking away tears.
“Xingchen,” he says, even though that wasn’t at all what he intended to say when he opened his mouth. But when he says it, he realizes it’s the only thing he possibly could say. His name, to this man, now.
The man stares at him, mouth open. It’s a lovely mouth, and the line between his brows is lovely too, like his throat, and the long-fingered hand hovering over Xiao Xingchen’s shoulder, without quite touching him. “Xingchen,” he says, almost in wonder. “I’m — Song Lan. Zichen.”
There’s no telling how long they would have stared at each other if the bartender hadn’t materialized in front of them, talking about drink specials and tabs and refills. Xiao Xingchen waves vaguely at his glass, and Zichen asks for something that is, mercifully, not Malört.
And then — and then they drink in silence, side by side, and Xiao Xingchen figures another hour of doing so might almost calm him down, so long as Xue Yang doesn’t reappear. But Zichen, glancing at him just as furtively as Xiao Xingchen has been glancing back, sees the messy sketch lying on the bar, and lets out a breath like he’s been punched in the gut.
“Your drawing,” he says. “The sword. What’s its name?”
Xiao Xingchen hadn’t honestly thought that far ahead. He woke with the sword in his mind, and there it remained all day, until he sat down at the bar and started to draw. How Zichen can tell it’s a sword at all is a near-miracle, given the lack of light and the bad sketch.
But he did, and he’s staring at Xiao Xingchen’s face again, open and confused and — hopeful?
So for the second time that night, Xiao Xingchen opens his mouth, and what comes out is not what he planned, but what is right.
“Fuxue,” he says. The pain behind his eyes flares again, and then fades away.
Zichen sighs. The hand wrapped around his glass shakes, faintly. You could almost miss it, if you weren’t watching closely, or didn’t know what to watch for. Xiao Xingchen wonders which it is.
“Do you want to go for a walk?” he asks.
“With you?” says Xiao Xingchen, almost shouting to be heard over the music as it crashes into the chorus. He hears Xue Yang laughing, and forces himself not to turn around.
Zichen nods, something unreadable but somehow familiar moving through his gaze. “With me, Xingchen,” he says. “Just to talk.”
Go now, whispers a voice in the back of his head. Go now. It’s time.
Xiao Xingchen looks at the sword in his notebook, at how tightly his hand grips the pen. And then, without thinking, he shoves notebook and pen into his bag, and grabs his coat, and stands up.
“Yes,” he says. “I do. I want to go for a walk with you.”
Zichen smiles again, small and perfect.

THE MAD GEAR & MISSILE KID
The Mad Gear and Missile Kid (often simply referred to as "Mad Gear") is a hard rock solo artist based in the Zones outside Battery City. He first rose to prominence in 2009 with his self-titled debut EP, The Mad Gear and Missile Kid, which immediately garnered vast critical acclaim among the desert's population of zonerunners. Mad Gear's style is best described as hard rock with a notable hardcore, thrashcore, crust punk, and anarcho-punk influences. Multiple independent Zone artists have cited Mad Gear as a primary influence in terms of genre and personal style, and consider him to be a cornerstone in the proliferation of the politically-charged hardcore genre in the Zones. The purposeful incorporation of pre-war ideologies and stylism has made Mad Gear one of the most infamous and prolific musicians to be unconditionally banned from all premises owned and operated by Better Living Industries, and has been since the release of his second EP, Fuck Your Damage Control, in 2010. Known possession of Mad Gear memorabilia, as is the case for most artists who preach pre-war ideologies that run contrary to B.L.I.'s own, is an actionable offense in any spaces under their ownership, including Battery City.
Very little is known about Mad Gear's personal life. While he is generally assumed to be male, his age, name, and appearance have all been routinely obscured. He appears to write, record, and produce his own music but oftentimes enlists DJs to distribute it, usually by sending them cassette tapes or vinyl pressings to be played over pirate airwaves. Mad Gear has been known to use outdated methods for distribution, such as the use of bone vinyls or shellac pressings, though the reasons behind use of such atypical technology are unknown. Due to the fragility of such distributive methods, existing physical vinyls are exceptionally rare and highly valued. In spite of sporadic release dates and almost no publicization outside of DJ broadcasts, Mad Gear's rise to popularity was almost instantaneous and has sustained itself for years.
Following the release of Mad Gear's debut EP, further records have been released with no predictable pattern. Mad Gear's use of hardcore and punk sensibilities often translate to short, fast, hard-edged tracks, though he has been known to experiment with industrial overtones. Standard length for a Mad Gear EP typically falls between three to nine minutes, and consists of about two to five songs. Standard length for a Mad Gear LP typically falls between ten to twenty minutes, and consists of about six to ten songs.
Contrary to popular belief, the "Missile Kid" is not another member of the group, but rather a caffeine-induced hallucination of a sentient weapon that Mad Gear once witnessed onstage. No other band members have been sighted during live Mad Gear performances, which has led to the commonly accepted belief that Mad Gear is a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist.
The Mad Gear and Missile Kid were active from 2009 onward until a spontaneous disappearance in 2032, following an experimental performance that involved shooting a "giant, red-hot flash blast up into the sky to shake up the heavens," a maneuver dubbed the "Galactic Shatter." The performance alerted the show's presence to B.L.I. enforcement, which promptly arrived on the scene to shut down the premises.
Mad Gear has not been sighted since, leaving KY (2031) to be his last known release. He has nonetheless remained a highly influential presence among artists and musicians in the Zones. While other musicians have attempted to emulate his stylistic leanings, very few have achieved the same level of praise and attention.

BEST ALBUMS 2020
Some albums I enjoyed during quarantine.
Hon Mentions: Campfire Chords - Arkells, A Written Testimony - Jay Electronica, All In One - Jaunt, Punisher - Phoebe Bridgers, Alfredo - Freddie Gibs and Madlib, Thats What They All Say - Jack Harlow, Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs - Colter Wall, This Place Sucks Ass - PUP, Only For Dolphins - Action Bronson, Black Habits - D Smoke, What’s Your Pleasure - Jessie Ware, 3.15.20 - Childish Gambino, Dedicated Side B - Carly Rae Jepsen, Dark Lane Demo Tapes - Drake, After Hours - The Weeknd, color theory - Soccer Mommy, Circles - Mac Miller, Womb - Purity Ring
10) Future Nostalgia - Dua Lipa
Tumblr media
One of the lesser, although still significant, tragedies of the 2020 COVID era was that weddings and sweaty club basements the world over were robbed of Dua Lipa’s prolific output this year. Future Nostalgia is hit or miss in places, but the hits come hot and heavy delivering banger after 80′s-disco-inspired banger. Dominant summer jams “Don’t Start Now” and “Break My Heart” are the highlights here, along with “Levitating” (equally good with or without DaBaby). Sleeper tracks “Cool” and “Hallucinate” round out the year’s best pure pop album.
Highlights: Don’t Start Now, Break My Heart, Levitating, Physical, Cool, Hallucinate
9) Women In Music, Pt. III - HAIM
Tumblr media
The third album from LA’s sister act rock trio HAIM delivers consistency and growth for the band. There’s plenty of retro heartbreak rock on Women In Music, Pt. III to satisfy fans of HAIM’s first two albums, but lots of new on offer as well including the jazzy Lou Reed inspired sax of “Summer Girl” and Danielle Haim sounding positively Joni Mitchell-esque on “Man From the Magazine”. The auditory production flourishes of erstwhile Vampire Weekend member Rostam are noticeable throughout and help stretch the bounds of the HAIM sisters’ signature Wilson Phillips meets Fleetwood Mac summer rock sound into something more of the moment.
Highlights: The Steps, Summer Girl, Don’t Wanna, Man From the Magazine, FUBT
8) My Turn (Deluxe) - Lil Baby
Tumblr media
I’ve almost given up on trying to enjoy or understand most “new rap” but every now and then something breaks through that I connect with for some reason. Atlanta rapper Lil Baby’s My Turn was that album for me this year. There are many reasons I feel I should not like Lil Baby’s music, from his liberal use of autotune to his mumbling delivery, but something always drew me back to it and, listen after listen, it grew on me. Lil Baby’s flow is persistent when he locks in, with matching driving trap production from Quay Global, Tay Keith and others, mirroring in sound the story of Baby’s rise from the streets to prison to the studio. The standout track is late addition “The Bigger Picture”, Lil Baby’s protest anthem on race in America, policing and the turmoil following the killing of George Floyd by police, a political statement from an otherwise apolitical artist, showing that Lil Baby has much more to offer than bravado and autotune.
Highlights: Grace (ft. 42 Dugg), Forever (ft. Lil Wayne), No Sucker (ft. Moneybagg Yo), Social Distancing, The Bigger Picture
7) Miss Anthropocene - Grimes
Tumblr media
The third major studio release from Montreal native Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes, doesn’t reach the same highs as its predecessors - 2015′s electro-pop masterpiece Art Angels (which rated number 1 on this list for that year) or 2012′s Visions, the synth-laden fever dream that introduced Grimes to mainstream notoriety (number 2 on this list for 2012) - but it’s still very much worth the time. The vibe of Miss A falls somewhere between Grimes’ previous two albums, and a little darker and messier to boot. Grimes sounds a bit like she’s playing a concert for the end of the world, which feels a bit prophetic for an album released just before a global pandemic took hold. As always, Grimes is out to flex her muscle as a technician and across the album’s ten tracks she mixes diverse sounds ranging from rave synths to banjos showing how far her craft has come since making Visions on Garageband in her Mile End apartment.
Highlights: So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth, Violence, Delete Forever, 4ÆM, You’ll miss me when I’m not around
6) evermore - Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
Spoiler alert, this isn’t the highest ranked Taylor Swift album on this list. Surprise released in December, evermore was an early Christmas present to fans of Swift’s surprise summer album folklore (more on that later). evermore continues Swift’s reinvention from pop star to indie singer-songwriter, assisted by songwriting partner Aaron Dessner of The National and a variety of indie darling guest stars - this time around featuring HAIM, The National’s Matt Berninger and another stunning guest turn with Bon Iver. Speaking of Justin Vernon, the album capping title track might be the single best song on either folklore or evermore. And for fans of Taylor’s earlier catalogue like me, the return to country music on “no body, no crime” is like reconnecting with an old friend. evermore is a little messier and less consistent thematically than its sister album, feeling a bit like folklore’s b-sides. But when your b-sides are better than most artist’s a-sides, why not release another album’s worth?
Highlights: ‘tis the damn season, no body no crime (ft. HAIM), coney island (ft. The National), cowboy like me, evermore (ft. Bon Iver)
5) RTJ4 - Run The Jewels
Tumblr media
Walking the streets of my neighbourhood with the first listen of RTJ4 in my earbuds, I found myself actually crying at the thought that I would not get to see Killer Mike and el-P perform these songs live in the summer of 2020. The memories of RTJ festival sets past came rushing over me in a wave. That was my first “damn, I miss live music moment” of the pandemic. The fourth instalment of Run The Jewels’ historic rap partnership is more of the same in the very best way. Like the dynamic duo’s previous three instalments, RTJ4 is in your face, moves at a frenetic clip, and takes no prisoners. There’s even another album highlighting collaboration with Rage Against The Machine’s Zack De La Rocha. The politics of RTJ4′s tirades against inequity and the police state feel even more imminent in 2020 against the backdrop of George Floyd, the ensuing protest movement that gripped America, and the 2020 presidential election. I really hope we get a chance to see Mike and el-P tour these songs in 2021, the world needs it.
Highlights: ooh la la (ft. Greg Nice and DJ Premier), goonies vs. E.T., walking in the snow, JU$T (ft. Pharrell Williams and Zack de la Rocha), a few words for the firing squad (radiation)
4) Saint Cloud - Waxahatchee
Tumblr media
The majestically twangy folk-Americana of Saint Cloud, the fifth solo album from Katie Crutchfield (stage named Waxahatchee after Waxahatchee Creek, Alabama, where the singer grew up), is a nostalgic cure for the ails of 2020. The soft bluesy rhythms of Crutchfield’s songs feel like a lazy long summer day spent by the water. That was something we needed this year. The songwriting is just as beautiful. The standout track, “Fire”, speaks to Crutchfield’s journey finding sobriety and reconnecting with her southern roots. It also speaks to a longing feeling “give me something / it ain’t enough / it ain’t enough”.  On “Arkadelphia”, Crutchfield croons: “We try to give it all meaning / Glorify the grain of the wood / Tell ourselves what's beautiful and good”. In the chaos of 2020, the calm oasis of Saint Cloud is certainly something beautiful and good worth enjoying.
Highlights: Can’t Do Much, Fire, The Eye, Arkadelphia, St. Cloud
3) Suddenly - Caribou
Tumblr media
Suddenly was my first genuine pandemic listen and, in the early days of lockdown, I found myself going back to it again and again. So much so, that the opening haunting notes of “Sister” became a kind of touchstone as I adjusted to a weird new work-from-home lifestyle. The chilled out weirdness of Caribou was an extremely welcome presence in 2020. It had been long enough since 2014′s Our Love (2014′s number 1 on this list) that I’d forgotten how enjoyably quirky Dan Snaith’s floaty pseudo-house tunes could be. Suddenly is a little more laid back than the club ready Our Love, which maybe suits it more to a world where dancefloors are closed. The tunes are also tighter, more economical in their length and soundscape. The lead single “Home” sounds downright commercial (in a good way) with it’s motown sampled chorus. Other parts of the album, like the closing “Cloud Song” venture into more experimental territories. All throughout, however, are Caribou’s signature warm chord progressions inviting you to lose yourself in them. Whether you’re looking for a guided meditation or an at-home dance party, Suddenly was the perfect 2020 album for it.
Highlights: Sister, Home, Lime, Never Come Back, Ravi
2) Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 1 : The Butcher Shoppe Sessions - Sturgill Simpson
Tumblr media
2020 was full of unexpected things, many bad but some surprisingly delightful. Firmly in the latter category is Cuttin’ Grass, Sturgill Simpson’s surprise double album made up entirely of bluegrass covers of his own catalogue. A true product of 2020, Simpson recorded the album with a murderer’s row of contemporary bluegrass artists after recovering from COVID-19 and challenging his fans to raise funds for charity in exchange for recording a new album. That album became Cuttin’ Grass, a traditional bluegrass re-imagination of the greatest hits and hidden gems of a country artist who has always strived to avoid being labelled as a country artist. The songs feel effortlessly at home and are given new life amid the frenetic guitar and mandolin picking, flying fiddles, and twangling banjos. If Simpson’s ode to the revelatory experience of psychedlic drug use “Turtles All The Way Down” felt revolutionary on 2014′s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, it feels like an old standard here with its tempo pitched up and enveloped in the cacophony of the bluegrass ensemble. There is some good old fashioned heartbreak to slow things down too. Mandolin player and backup vocalist Sierra Hull shines on “I Wonder” (a cover of a song originally recorded by Sturgill’s former band Sunday Valley) as she joins Simpson on the chorus: “Tell me am I the only one / drinking and cursing your name?” The juxtaposition of Simpson’s unconventional country catalogue with the most traditional of country music styles just works and the entire hour can be listened and relistened for days. And if you’re still not satisfied, the companion “Volume 2: the Cowboy Arms Sessions” released in December brings back the same supporting cast to explore more of Simpson’s catalogue.
Highlights: All The Pretty Colors, Breakers Roar, Time After All, Turtles All The Way Down, Voices
1) folklore - Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
Well, I told you there’d be more Taylor Swift on this list, and here it is. Your number 1 album of 2020 is folklore, the surprise release pandemic project in which the world’s biggest country star turned pop star reinvented herself again as an indie artist. Unlike anything else Swift has put out since RED, nothing on folklore is designed to be played in a stadium. Rather, it’s all more at home in a cabin by the fire, or in your earbuds on a fall walk... basically, it’s music meant for 2020. Like its companion evermore, folklore is the product of Swift’s songwriting collaboration with The National’s guitarist Aaron Dessner. The melding of songwriting styles seems like an odd match at first but sounds like a match made in heaven. Lyrically, Swift’s songwriting makes an evolutionary leap, almost leaving her primary auto or semi-autobiographical comfort zone behind completely (other than, perhaps, in heavily veiled metaphor) in favour of invented stories and semi-historical world building. After a few listens, you discover that the same characters appear in different songs like the imagined history of Rebekah Harkness, the real life former inhabitant of Swift’s Rhode Island home, on “the last great american dynasty” or imagery of “battleships” that “sink beneath the waves” in the ghost story of “my tears ricochet”. In the so-called “teenage love triangle trilogy” of “betty”, “cardigan”, and “august”, Swift tells different parts of the same story from the perspective of different characters. Each song stands on its own, but the discovery that the pieces fit together is wonderful. “betty” is the standout track for me, as a long suffering fan of “country Taylor”. In style, it harkens back to her earlier work, but in substance it’s something new entirely as Swift sings from the perspective of James, the boy who has done wrong by his lover and is seeking forgiveness. The pinnacle of the album is “exile” Swift’s collaboration with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. The call and response interaction of Swift with Vernon’s true to for emma form baritone is chill inducing. Like so many of the unexpected good things in 2020, folklore came from throwing plans out the window and doing what felt right for the moment. This is Taylor Swift making the music she wanted to make. In Dark Knight fashion, it’s the album we needed, if not the one we deserved. It’s the best album of the year.
Highlights: cardigan, the last great american dynasty, exile (ft. Bon Iver), my tears ricochet, epiphany, betty, peace

Asur - Review/Reaction
Okay so I loved it! This show has changed me as a person somehow. But honestly speaking it was fucked (some people said more fucked than sacred games but I dont watch that so I dont have a reference). The background of Hindu mythology was used amazingly and holy shit the actors. Guys the actors need a round of applause coz they were simply amazing. I’m still shaking after watching the last episode I literally finished the show in 1.5 days so like safe to say I was hooked. I would also like to say that the show itself was very well paced, at no point did I think that the story was going too slow or too fast, everything was perfectly timed and perfectly revealed. I will be cutting this post for a more in-depth review - and after the cut everything are
Also before you guys watch - this show is very dark - it depicts suicidal tendencies, gory murders and gruesome scenes - things that will make you lowkey vomit (I have a pretty high tolerance for these things so I was fine, but just in case you aren’t it’s good to know coz they spring those up on you)
SPOILLLLERRRRSSSSS
Actors/Characters:
Arshad Warsi as Dhananjay ‘DJ’ Rajpoot: This is the first time I’ve seen Arshad Warsi in a non-comic role, and I was honestly truly blown away. He was simply amazing. Now coming to character. The main message of this show was that ‘evil lives in all of us’. But the way they revealed it was quite phenomenal. DJ is shown to be the ‘innocent’ ‘good guy’ and how is was wrongfully framed for his wife’s murder, but is still working to find the actual serial killer - not because to save himself, but in order to save other people. It is then shown, that he had done something ‘bad’ ‘immoral’ and ‘wrong’ in his life - 10 years ago he caused a 15-year-old to go to jail rather than a juvenile detention centre for the murder of his father. He did this by faking his birth certificate and forging evidence - since there was no evidence to connect the child to the murder (but the audience knows that he did it). Thus, begins the game for his repentence.
Barun Sobti as Nikhil Nair: So here’s the ting - I genuinely forget how good of an actor our boi is (don’t blame me I’ve spent the last 8 years, watching him go “what the” and “Khushi Kumari Gupta”, throwing anger fits and tantrums), but holy shit I was blown away. Barun has this ability to make his audience feel every emotion he’s going through - anger, sadness, despair, happiness, joy, relief - everything, he is a brilliant actor. Nikhil was an amazing character. He was an all-in-all protagonist. He had a loving relationship with his wife and a daughter that he loved very much. However, when he is kidnapped by the serial killer himself - he is given an option - to either let his wife and kid die, or become an accomplice to murder, where he meticulously plans the murder and the killer goes and does the job. He chooses the latter, thus, blurring the line between good and bad. It is also interesting considering the man that saved lives ended up taking them. The final test for him is when in order to save three hostages, he is asked to sacrifice his daughter. He does that and it is shown that due to the trauma they have faced, one of the hostages shoots the other, making Nikhil regret his decision instantly - the killer thus proving his point, human nature is evil, that even the good turn to evil in hardship. Nikhil blames DJ’s deeds for his daughter’s death, and Naina leaves him, blaming him for their daughter’s death.
Ridhi Dogra as Nusrat Saeed: Nusrat is shown to be the ex-gf/ex-love etc. of Nikhil, before he left CBI without telling her about where he was going and for how long. In all these years she has been unable to move on from him and has replaced her love life with work as a forensics expert. She is shown to be very talented in her job and is shown to have a friendly relationship with everyone - although, in a hallucination, Nikhil is shown to feel guilty for what he did to her and deep down does love her, but loves his wife more
Anupriya Goenka as Naina Nair: Naina is shown to be a doting mother, and a loving wife, who has issues that although her husband loves her very much, wants to rejoin the CBI, even if he has to leave her for it. She ends up going to him and is shown to be a very talented software engineer working in cyber-security. She then ends up helping the CBI in order catch the killer
Vishesh Bansal as 15-year-old Shubh Joshi: This kid holy shit. I watched him in IPPKND as Aarav and some other serials here and there, but man he blew me away. Like I was sitting there shook half the time as to how can someone be this talented. Now Shubh Joshi was who this story was about - the asura, the rakshas, the one who was awaiting for Vishnu to return on this Earth to vanquish him. When Shubh’s mother was pregnant with him, his father the head priest wanted a ‘devta-like putra’ he wanted a god on the form of the Earth to the point, he made his kundli in advance and did not allow for his wife to give birth until the right month. He failed, as his wife slipped down the stairs, and ended up giving birth 2 days before he wanted her to. She gave birth in the month in which demons were said to be born. Thus, Shubh turned out to be extraordinary - he learnt how to walk at 2 days old, he was able to read the scriptures by the time he was 3, and had an IQ of above 160. His dad used to curse him, beat him, and call him an ‘asur’ to the point he started believing it. When his grandfather took him to the psychologist - he was diagnosed with autism, causing him to not have the same social skills and unable to connect with others as well as other kids. His father’s abuse caused his brain to become extremely violent, and it is then shown that he goes to a skeleton and breaks its index finger, then finding a dog and burning it alive, with no emotion. At 15 he poisons his father causing his father to fall into the river to his death - he drops the lota in which he was poisoning him with getting rid of the evidence. However, DJ sees this, and sees no remorse for his father’s death, he seems unaffected by it, and continues on his day as normal. DJ then fakes evidence and his birth report - causing him to go to jail rather than receive therapy and counselling for a better future. In jail he becomes a leader - he is able to convince people to let the evil in them take over the good because that’s what human tendency is. It is what we are meant to do and that those who do not entertain the evil in them, deserve to die.
Amey Wagh as present-day Shubh Joshi: Gonna say it here - A+ casting. He looks exactly how you would expect Shubh Joshi to look when he is older. So Shubh Joshi is now a serial killer - who kills people from the horoscope of greatness, people who do good deeds - he does this to send a message to Vishnu to come on earth and now thinks of himself to be mighty and powerful as an asur should be. He is shown to now have a huge following to the point where Nikhil and DJ all think of him to look different, but he instead, is their coworker, Rasool Sheikh the hacker in the CBI. As he is quiet and aloof, no one suspects him, and thus, he is able to conduct these murders with absolute precision of planning. When Lolark finds out that he is the real Shubh, he ends up killing him, right after his child’s death and the CBI arrest the wrong Shubh who was shown to be Kesari - the first follower of Shubh in jail. The show ends when Shubh looks deep into DJ’s eyes reminding him of his 15-year-old self, causing DJ to realise he is indeed the real Shubh.
The rest of the cast and crew were equally amazing but I just mentioned the main ones otherwise we’ll be here for days
Things I liked:
I loved the use of Hindu mythology, they also narrated some stories in Shubh’s POV questioning whether the gods were always right - was Vishnu right into tricking the asur’s into their death for no reason, was Krishna right, knowing about the war and not being able to stop it?
Also loved how in depth the characters were - Shubh was horrible in what he did, but by writing in a way that if the things that happened to him hadn’t had happened owing to his developmental disorder he would’ve been a ‘good’ person.
The fact that it wasn’t Shubh’s complete fault that he thought this way, and the fact he had autism + the system really failing him showed us that not all bad people are born bad - sometimes situations make them that way. And some don’t even know the difference between the right and wrong choice - what if some people do truly think evil is bad.
I loved the concept of the main protagonists being good people but being pushed to embrace the evil - especially when Nikhil, who thought he did a good deed by saving the hostages to prove to Shubh that inherently good people do truly exist and he sees one of the hostages kill the other - truly shakes this belief. It shows that even after being forced to accomplice to murders - he still had hope, a hope that was brutally crushed
I loved the cast as well, they all had good chemistry and Barun and Arshad were amazing.
Things I disliked:
The female characters weren’t explored at all. Nusrat’s whole arc revolved around Nikhil and finding the killer’s. There were some episodes where she wasn’t even there. And a lot of her character was an accessory to Nikhil’s and DJ’s characters. On the other hand, Naina’s character was only a mother and a wife. In fact she joins the CBI to help them find her husband, she isn’t even leading the investigation or anything. Also in the first half of the show she was truly very annoying and just deserved better in general rather than just being the parallel love interest. They should’ve done more with the female characters. What was stopping them from being as brilliant or as great as the male characters. Nikhil and DJ were described as geniuses and out of this world. While Nusrat just helped.
The amount of Shuddh hindi - I know he’s a pandit’s son and his whole thing is religion he will talk in Shuddh hindi. But honestly, I wish they gave english translations or show it with pictures or something else coz it was very very very hard for me to understand some things and I lost a lot of context
That is all - enjoy this review hopefully I didn’t spoil the whole show (I definitely did), and have a great day
