The Ultimate Guide to Colorbond Supplies: Choosing Quality and Durability
Welcome to our comprehensive guide on Best Colorbond supplies Melbourne In this blog post, we will delve into the world of Colorbond and explore why it is crucial to choose high-quality supplies. Whether you're looking for roofing, fencing, or cladding solutions, Colorbond is a name that stands for exceptional durability, aesthetic appeal, and low maintenance. So, let's dive in and discover everything you need to know about Colorbond supplies!
Understanding Colorbond:
Colorbond is a brand of pre-painted steel manufactured by BlueScope Steel. It is renowned for its exceptional quality and versatility in various applications. The benefits of Colorbond supplies are manifold. Firstly, they offer superior durability, making them ideal for both residential and commercial projects. Colorbond products are designed to withstand the harshest weather conditions, including intense heat, heavy rain, and strong winds. This durability ensures that your investment will stand the test of time.
Moreover, Colorbond supplies come in a wide range of colors, allowing you to choose the perfect shade to complement your architectural style. From classic neutrals to vibrant contemporary hues, Colorbond offers a diverse palette that can enhance the aesthetic appeal of any building. This versatility ensures that your Colorbond supplies not only provide excellent protection but also elevate the overall look and feel of your property.
Another significant advantage of Colorbond supplies is their low-maintenance nature. Unlike other materials, Colorbond does not require frequent repainting or sealing to maintain its appearance. The pre-painted steel surface is resistant to chipping, peeling, and fading, ensuring that it retains its vibrant color and finish for years to come. This convenience saves you time, effort, and money on regular maintenance, making Colorbond an excellent long-term investment.
Types of Colorbond Supplies:
Colorbond supplies encompass a wide range of products, each serving a specific purpose. Let's explore some of the most common types:
Colorbond Roofing: Colorbond roofing is synonymous with durability and style. It is available in a variety of profiles, including corrugated, trimdek, and klip-lok, catering to different architectural requirements. Colorbond roofing not only protects your property from the elements but also adds a sleek and modern touch to its overall design.
Colorbond Fencing: Colorbond fencing is a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties. It offers privacy, security, and a contemporary aesthetic. With a range of heights, colors, and styles available, Colorbond fencing can be customized to suit any landscape or architectural style.
Colorbond Cladding: Colorbond cladding is an excellent option for enhancing the exterior of your building. It provides a protective layer against the elements while adding a visually appealing texture. Colorbond cladding is available in various profiles, such as standing seam and snaplock, providing versatility in design.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Colorbond Supplies:
When selecting Colorbond supplies, it is essential to consider a few key factors to ensure you make the right choice for your project:
Color Selection: Take into account the overall aesthetic of your property and choose a color that complements it. Consider the surrounding environment, architectural style, and personal preferences to select the perfect shade.
Compatibility with Architectural Style: Ensure that the chosen Colorbond supplies align with the architectural style of your property. Whether it's a traditional or contemporary design, Colorbond offers options that seamlessly blend with any style.
Climate Suitability: Consider the climate in your area and choose Colorbond supplies that are suitable for the conditions. Colorbond products are designed to withstand extreme temperatures, corrosive environments, and harsh weather events, ensuring long-lasting performance.
It is always recommended to consult with professionals or experts in the field to guide you through the selection process. They can provide valuable insights based on their experience and help you make informed decisions.
Furthermore, when assessing product quality, look for reputable suppliers that offer genuine Colorbond supplies. Check for certifications and warranties to ensure that you are getting a reliable product. Reading reviews and seeking recommendations from others who have used Colorbond supplies can also help in making an informed decision.
Where to Find Reliable Colorbond Suppliers:
Finding reliable Colorbond suppliers is crucial to ensure the authenticity and quality of your supplies. Here are some options to consider:
Local Suppliers: Look for reputable local suppliers in your area who specialize in Colorbond supplies. They will have firsthand knowledge of the product and can provide valuable guidance throughout your project.
Online Platforms: Several online platforms and websites offer a wide range of Colorbond supplies. These platforms provide convenience and access to a vast selection of options. However, ensure that you purchase from trusted sources to avoid counterfeit products.
Recommendations and Reviews: Seek recommendations from friends, family, or industry professionals who have previously used Colorbond supplies. Additionally, read online reviews to gain insights into the experiences of other customers.
Tips for Proper Installation and Maintenance:
Proper installation and maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and appearance of your Colorbond supplies. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Installation: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines and consult professionals if necessary. Each type of Colorbond supply may have specific installation requirements, so it's crucial to understand and follow the correct procedures.
Regular Maintenance: While Colorbond supplies are low-maintenance, some routine practices can further prolong their lifespan. Keep the surfaces clean by removing debris and dirt regularly. Inspect for any signs of damage and address them promptly to prevent further issues.
Additional Guidance: If you require additional guidance on installation or maintenance, there are resources available, such as tutorials, videos, and user manuals. These resources can provide step-by-step instructions and helpful tips to ensure you get the most out of your Colorbond supplies.

POP-UP House, Essendon Melbourne

POP-UP House in Essendon, Melbourne
16 Mar 2021
POP-UP House
Architects: FIGR Architecture Studio
Location: Essendon, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
POP-UP House attempts to counter the status quo of a new family home in a predominantly heritage setting. A common approach with new homes is to occupy most of the site whilst retaining a minimal front setback with a fortified sheer built form that shuts itself off from the public realm interface. Our approach was to create a home that challenges the aforementioned notion to discover opportunities in the often static, underutilised and forgotten. Focused on engaging with the urban realm, by inviting opportunities for interaction between inhabitants, passer-by’s, and neighbours to promote a sense of community engagement.
When presented from the street, the elevation is an extruded silhouette which is a sympathetic nod to the familiar roof forms of the surrounding vernacular. The upper volume of the building hovers above a landscaped mount that creates the beginning of a journey into the house. Flanked by existing neighbouring brick walls, that become internal edges which establish a dialogue between old and new.
The hovering belly of the house creates an undercroft that guides the guests into the house through lush, landscaped gardens creating a multi-faceted zone in the front yard that can adapt and evolve in program/use. The green landscaped wedge is planted with native vegetation which gently slopes back to the street frontage creating a mount that engages the public realm.
From the outset our clients felt their new home had to engage with the context beyond the site boundary creating a visually engaging public setting where neighbours and friends can be part of informal gatherings.
This modest 200m2 home required constraint and duality of use in its architecture. The in-between/ambiguous spaces had to contain multiple programs. One of such programs is the study positioned within a thoroughfare activating an otherwise underutilised threshold.
The green wedge facilitates bicycle storage, building services and a water retention system. The outdoor terrace extends into a netted area, utilising the in-between space to create additional zones for play and activation whilst allowing light to penetrate the front courtyard. To further remove the idea of redundancy, the underbelly of the dwelling doubles up as a carport, an extension of the workshop and informal entertaining area.
This mouldable zone provides long term flexibility for adaption of use. Increased site permeability through various garden zones and a generous garden at the rear of the site. High quality thermal insulation throughout the walls, roofs and floors with under slab insulation and thermally broken timber framed double-glazed windows. Where possible we have sourced local trades, materials and fittings. The Pop-Up House is designed to be durable and long-lasting.
The roof is clad in Surfmist Colorbond which reduces heat build-up in the home and the heat island effect in our cities. The walls are predominantly white painted weatherboards with accents of Silvertop Ash cladding. The roof form allows for strategic placement of solar panels for optimum capture.
A 5000-litre water tank has been buried in the front yard. All the roof water is captured and reused to flush toilets and garden irrigation. Custom fabricated mechanically operable screens are strategically positioned on the first-floor western facade for controlled screening of the Western Sun whilst allowing for maximum flexibility in managing solar access and views to the nature strip.

AMA'S King Bill House is a love letter to Fitzroy
King Bill is a love letter to Fitzroy, Melbourne in Australia. King Bill is a collage of Fitzroy’s built history, its textures, its forms, its order and its chaos. The high land values of Fitzroy would encourage many owners to add as much building as possible. Not so for the owners of King Bill. They sought to give something back to the suburb they love. They sought to create a new pocket park.
Located in the vibrant back streets of Fitzroy, Melbourne, King Bill is the renovation and extension of a double story terrace house and neighbouring garden. The house (one of 5 terraces built circa 1850) and its eastern garden were initially separate lots that were recently consolidated onto a single title. Recognising the importance and heritage significance of the area, as well as the rich eclectic nature of the location, the terrace facade remains untouched. A glazed corridor now runs along the eastern outer wall of the original terrace, linking the original house with the stable (garage and parents retreat) and the new pavilion, which houses kitchen, living and dining.
A family of four asked Austin Maynard Architects to design them their “forever house”. They asked for a renovation to their two story terrace home, incorporating the empty garden site to the east and re-using the old stable building at the rear. Long time Fitzroy locals, the clients chose not to capitalise on their block by exploiting the vacant site. They wanted more living space but they had no intention of maximising the economic yields by creating a huge home. Instead they sought to give something back to the suburb they love through a rich and generous garden.
‘For two centuries Fitzroy has been a highly diverse suburb of Melbourne. Throughout Fitzroy we see examples of this. Brick terrace homes, weather board cottages, post war stud-veneer homes and 1960s flats sit comfortably next to corrugated sheds, old factories and repurposed warehouses, randomly broken by pocket parks and dense gardens. This diversity surrounds one of the finest neo-classical buildings in Australia, The Fitzroy Town Hall, one block form King Bill. Fitzroy’s history of boom and bust is written in its buildings, which has created a diversity and eclecticism rarely seen nor maintained with such affection. Here there is memory, but also a dedication and willingness to be playful. Fitzroy is not nostalgic about its heritage, it engages with it. If you want to bring an old building back to life you do something vibrant so it doesn’t become a museum piece. King William Street is a wonderful example of Fitzroy’s eclecticism. King William Street has bursts of consistency broken by pocket parks and greenery. King Bill House is a love letter to Fitzroy. King Bill is a collage of its built history, its textures, its forms, its order and its chaos.’ – AMA
At King Bill, Austin Maynard Architects set out to completely re-think the terrace house and the principles that created them. Typically you walk through the front door of a terrace, past two bedrooms to the kitchen/living and small rear yard, which is usually overshadowed by the house itself. Austin Maynard Architects set aside these principles and looked at the house as empty spaces that needed new purpose. Holes have been punched through the boundary wall on the east and the entrance has been moved to the side to become a light filled corridor linking the old house with the stable and pavilion. With the entry moved, the original terrace entry porch is now a garden that the entry corridor is now a bathroom, which brings delight to the owners as they watch visitors scratch their head while they try to figure out how to find their way inside.
Surrounded by established garden, the glass pavilion sits in stark contrast to the dark masonry walls of the robust two story terraces either side. As with many Austin Maynard Architects projects the spaces created vary greatly in nature, thereby enabling the users to occupy spaces that best suit their mood, at any specific time. The introvert who wants to hide away and read a book in a dark space, verses someone who wants to slide away the walls and be in amongst the garden. Retaining the existing trees was fundamental to creating a variety of spaces. The house and the structure was meticulously designed to ensure that the exisiting trees remained intact throughout construction.
The brick and metal rear stable was in general disrepair. The original brick walls, internal fireplaces and timber beams were retained. The new Zincalume walls provide contemporary memory of the former life of the stable, which now houses a car stacker and a study, with the parent’s bedroom and bathroom above. A large curved sliding wall separates the parent’s bathroom from an open net over the study below. The parents can now step out of the bath, slide the wall away and then air dry themselves on the net in front of the big sunny north facing window.
Good architecture requires a great client. King Bill’s owners are a dynamic and enthusiastic family. While the strategies have not changed greatly since the first sketches, the addition of curves was something that the owners were very keen to see. Inspired by them, Austin Maynard Architects added curved corrugated metal, curved internal walls and an inset curved concrete slab.
The distinguishing and unifying feature of King Bill is the corrugated Colorbond steel metal cladding. Surfmist Custom Orb is used to define each of the additions – the stable building, the glass pavilion, and the bedroom pop out. The use of a singular material highlights the additions, particularly in the old stable building where the clean white steel contrasts with the original old brick. The advantage of the profile is that it can be rolled to create sweeping curves and sun shading eyelids. The versatility of using the linear ribs vertically or horizontal – allows the material to be used practically in different applications, to shade and guide rain water (the stable and pop out), or to create the curve of a building (the pavilion.)
Austin Maynard Architects were determined to maintain and encourage a significant indigenous garden, to enrich the block, to contribute greenery to the street and to create another pocket park in Fitzroy. The eastern garden, which was obscured behind a tin fence, was already long established with thriving Ornamental Pear and Silver Birch trees. Instead of clearing the site (the easy option), great care, consideration and even greater lengths were taken to save the trees. This was a project in itself.
The concrete slab of the living/kitchen/dining pavilion cantilevers beyond its footings so as not to encroach on the root zones of the trees. The foundations for the Y-shaped steel framing are thin piers designed to pierce the ground in the smallest way possible to avoid causing root damage. The Y’s themselves were meticulously arranged to avoid trunks and branches, with the screening allows generous space for natural growth.
Like all of Austin Maynard Architects buildings, sustainability is at the core of King Bill. The large garden increases the permeability of the site and also radically reduces heat sink in the area. Passive solar principles are maximised by the design. The pavilion is set back to create a sunny northern garden and is a deliberately low structure allowing sunlight into the garden to the south of it and passive solar gain into the re-imagined ‘shed’ on the southern boundary. The northern facade of the shed has been rebuilt to create a smaller footprint. The new facade is clad in Surfmist Colorbond which significantly reflects heat. The wall is double stud and thermal broken with high performance insulation throughout.
All new work aims to maximise available daylight and optimise passive solar gain in winter, while ensuring that summer sun does not hit the glass. All windows are double-glazed. There is no glazing on western facades and limited glass on the eastern facades. With active management of shade and passive ventilation, demands on mechanical heating and cooling are drastically reduced. A large water tank has been buried within the rear yard. All roof water is captured and reused to flush toilets and water the garden. Where possible, Austin Maynard Architects have sourced local trades, materials and fittings. Solar panels with micro-inverters cover the old roof.

Melbourne Polytechnic Glasshouse, Victoria
Deep within Melbourne Polytechnic’s Epping Campus is an empty green-field site, chosen by Melbourne Polytechnic as the location for a new Glasshouse facility capable of supporting their commitment to the growth of Victoria’s Food and Fibre Industry.
Melbourne Polytechnic Glasshouse realises the TAFE’s commitment to respond to the needs, priorities and innovations within the sector, combining theory-based classroom learning with hands-on experience to facilitate a training and education centre that will enable the up-skilling of a future focussed workforce in aquaponics, hydroponics and modern agricultural practices.
We took a risk with our tender invitation where, in collaboration with Lloyd Group, we decided to challenge the brief and invert the provided concept plan for the new facility. Understanding the building requirements for both programmes, we proposed re-locating the Glasshouse, i.e. the larger of the two volumes, to the rear of the facility so as to have the education centre face inwards towards the heart of the campus. This allowed us to establish a greater connection between the facility and the rest of the precinct and to locate glazing in a meaningful way to provide direct engagement with its adjacent context.
Key to the design was understanding Melbourne Polytechnic’s teaching and learning philosophy that proffers the development of skills through practise and practical industry experience. This pedagogical approach is reflected through the architecture which links the Glasshouse and Classrooms via a long internal corridor and central entrance, providing a palpable visual connection between the spaces. The two are similarly linked by their roof and ceiling forms where the classrooms celebrate the portal frame architecture of the Glasshouse.
Whilst the form and floor plan of the facility serves to connect the two learning environments, the selection of materials throughout distinguishes the spaces as separate yet symbiotic learning environments. The transparency of the Glasshouse is juxtaposed with the robustness of the colorbond metal cladding of the classrooms where internally, the selective use of plywood in the classrooms is key to softening this exterior. Through this, the architecture maintains a strong presence whilst still sitting comfortably within its precinct environment.
Having worked with Melbourne Polytechnic to deliver the adjacent Green Skills Centre we were mindful of the existing building context and subsequently used a subdued natural colour palette inside and out to create a broader connection to these facilities.
The design strategies for the new Melbourne Polytechnic Glasshouse have been balanced against the institute’s educational ideology, to create a building that truly represents a relationship between education and architecture. It is this connection between form, material and function that is crucial to achieving an innovative technical learning environment within educational precincts and has here resulted in a distinguished and compelling outcome for Melbourne Polytechnic.

Spray Painting Our Old Colorbond Sheds
Recently I tackled a DIY project at our place that had been on my to-do list for a LONG time – spray painting our old Colorbond sheds black. Woohoo! I know they are just sheds, but they look SO much better now that it legitimately thrills me. I had it in my head for months how much nicer they would look black, and they turned out even better, which is always a nice surprise. I’m totally revealing the absolute dag I am here, but do you guys get the same way about house and garden projects? You think of something you want to make over, and then you cannot get it out of your brain. Every time I looked at those old sheds I would think about how much more sexy they would look if they were black. (Can I get away with using the words ‘sexy’ and ‘sheds’ in the same sentence? I think so).
AFTER
  BEFORE
I think it’s because those sheds backdrop our new deck and outdoor living spaces, and our house had this gorgeous new look with the Scyon cladding, and we had this beautiful new patio and deck, but behind it were these really average old sheds. They’ve been there since we bought the place and you see them from every single back room of our house. Practical, but not very pretty. The small shed was maybe made from Zincalume (I’m guessing?) and the large one was cream Colorbond, with bore water stains.
Mr Nerd is generally supportive of my crazy endeavours, but I can’t say he quite understood my obsession with painting them black. “Why would you want to bother painting the sheds?” he asked.
He ate his words when he saw the results. There is just something about black paint, isn’t there? It has transformative powers. Especially in a garden – plants look so brilliant against black; it makes buildings – even big sheds – seem to recede; it sort of ties everything together and it just looks bold and deliberate. I can’t get enough of black houses and sheds.
The kids have been consuming a good chunk of my energy, time and soul lately but the perfect excuse to finally paint came when Dulux put the word out about their new Jelly Beans campaign. This year from September to October everyone who buys 8L of Dulux paint from Bunnings or an independent hardware store receives a tin of jellybeans, one-of-five collectable Dulux puppies and helps support the company’s $140,000 donation to Second Chance Animal Rescue in Melbourne, and I was happy to put my blogger hat on and do my bit.
Nala was happy to put her hat on and be a MODELLE
So, I got my black Dulux Weathershield paint (Dulux Monument – to tie in with our house’s cladding paint scheme, which we did in Dulux Monument and Dulux Natural White) I cleaned the sheds with a hose and an old broom, and then I began painting.
With a brush. With the kids at my feet. I know.
I’ve done a bit of spray painting – all our old aluminium windows, chairs, planters, small things like picture frames etc – but can you believe I actually had to get up the nerve to spray paint the sheds?
I think it’s because an aerosol can seems so easy, but an electricity-operated spray gun just seemed so intimidating. I felt like if there was someone in the world who could muck it up and somehow whip that spray gun around and spray paint themselves in the face, it would be me. And I thought there would be much more backspray than there actually was. Even when I spray painted our old aluminium windows, I couldn’t believe how much the backspray went. I looked in the mirror afterward and realised the backspray had coated my eyebrows and nostril hairs white. I was horrified. I looked like a fiercely ageing Oompa Loompa.
I legit thought that painting with a brush – at least while the kids were underfoot – would be the more doable option. You can see how well THAT idea turned out on my Instagram Stories. (I saved all my progress to a Highlight reel called Shed Makeover, if you want to see videos of my fails and eventual progress). If you want the short version, just imagine Little Nerd asking me his daily 48,000 questions and telling me he wants his 34th snack of the day while I try to paint and Little Miss Nerd climbs up my ladder behind me and joyfully dips her chubby arm into the paint tin (and me screaming and admitting defeat).
The next day I begged my mother to take my spawn for the day, and then I faced my fear, got a spray gun (I used this Dulux Rapid Finish Spray Gun) and BALLSED UP.
Me with BALLS UP…. wait
I read the manual, got it going and was so delighted with it I wondered why on earth I had been so wary about it before. It was SO much faster and the finish was good. I did two coats, and it was done! It was deliciously satisfying seeing the shed transform before my eyes. I think refilling the plastic container on the spray gun took longer than painting the shed did.
I also fixed up this ugly corner of our garden that’s been bugging me for years (because it’s what my eye would be naturally drawn to when you’re standing at our kitchen sink looking out the window) and I wish I’d remembered to take a proper before photo because it was such an unattractive patch with just some dead straggling plants in it. But as it is I only thought to take a photo of it when I’d cleared it (with the aid of my small, useless assistant). I filled it in with plants I already had – potted palms and some agaves and dracaenas I’d found on the side of the road (God I love green waste pickup) and added some brushwood fencing I got from Bunnings.
When I shared this makeover to my Stories, I got so many DMs – it seems I’m not the only one thinking of painting an ugly Colorbond shed or fence! – so here are a few of those questions and replies. I’m definitely no painting expert, so please feel free to weigh in in the comments section if you are.
HOW TO SPRAY PAINT COLORBOND
What colour did you use?
Dulux Monument – same as our house.
How many tins of paint did it take?
I used up two 4L tins of Dulux Weathershield in a low sheen formula. You need to choose a paint that is compatible with your steel. It needs to be exterior-specific, water-based acrylic paint.
Do you have to use a special paint for spray painting?
Dulux DO make specific formulas for spray painting but you can also use other paints to spray paint with a spray gun. You just need to dilute them with 10 – 20 percent water.
Did you prime the Colorbond first?
After researching this topic online and talking to friends who’d done it before, I decided not to worry about doing a primer beforehand. I did apply an SLS metal etch primer on high-wear areas (like around the handle to the shed door and on the hinges) but aside from that I applied the paint directly to the Colorbond (and metal of the rear shed). The reason for this, is that it’s old Colorbond, which over time has more adhesion than new. If you have a brand new Colorbond shed or fence, some people seem to recommend adding adhesion by either sanding it or using a primer. And you have to make sure you get rid of all the manufacturing residue if it’s a new fence or shed. A warning, if you paint a new Colorbond shed or fence, Bluescope Steel (who manufacture them) say that it will void any of their warranties issued.
If I look tired it’s because I am. Thanks Mr Nerd for the photos, you did reasonably well at finally becoming a good Instahusband and I saw a remarked improvement on your usual”one-shot-is-all-I-got” attitude
How bad was the backspray?
It wasn’t as bad as I had been expecting however if you are painting outside I would one hundred percent recommend you wait for a very calm day (no wind) and make sure you’ve moved your cars away or taken in your washing if it’s close by! If you’re spray painting a patio etc I would make sure you cover up your paving or decking.
Thanks Dulux for gifting me the paint for this post. If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments! Do you have a project you’re dying to spray paint? Maya x
