Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

A Great Timeline
Ten examples of art through a thousand years
10th-19th Centuries
My project is a demonstration of art though out a thousand years with one piece for every hundred years. My attempt is to demonstrate how art effects art. All art reflects the individual and collective creative experiences that show us beauty and make us experience emotions. My Art selection demonstrates everything from the suffering of Christ to the beauty of Asian landscape art. I hope you enjoy as I attempt to show you the influence of art on art and the historical and cultural background of each piece.
Tumblr media
"The Gero Crucifix", Tenth Century.
"The Gero Crucifix" was an Tenth century sculpture of the crucified Christ. It is significant because it was the oldest and largest sculpture of its kind north of the alps. It was commissioned by Gero who was the Archbishop of Cologne and was completed by 970. This sculpture was unique and significant for its time not only for it's large size (6Ft 2In) height by (5Ft 5In) width, but also for its Byzantine influence which was uncommon in European religious art at the time. The artist was unknown, the culture was Byzantine/Cologne. It was carved from oak then painted and gilded.
Tumblr media
"Bayeux Tapestry", Eleventh century.
The "Bayeux Tapestry" was created in the eleventh century and was likely a commissioned piece of art by the Norman Royal family as it portrays the Norman conquest of England in 1066. This tapestry is 68.4 Meters long and .5 Meters wide. It is an important piece of English artistic history. The medium is linen, the artist is unknown, and the culture Norman/English.
Tumblr media
"Wind and Snow in the Fir Pines", Twelfth Century.
Wind and Snow in the Fir Pines was created by Li Shan is twelfth century China. This Painting shows a small house in the middle of a cold and harsh forest and mountains. This piece of Chinese art is a scroll painting and a landscape piece done on a medium of silk. Li Shan was the director of the palace library under the Jin dynasty.
The dimensions of the art is 29.7 x 79.2 cm. The painting is incredibly detailed, and contains six colophons of Cinese notable artists and officials and the signature of the Qianlong Emperor. The Painting is aesthetic and the emphasis on the harshness of nature and the small size of the house is representative of the Chinese art motif that life is ephemeral.
Tumblr media
"Sermon of the birds", Thirteenth Century.
The Sermon of the Birds was the fifteenth of twenty-eight scenes of a Fresno dedicated to the stories of Saint Francis. The Fresno series was dedicated to the documentation of the life and miracles of Saint Francis. This series was painted in the Upper Basilica of Assisi, which was a municipality of Italy.
The series was created by artist Giotto di Bondone between 1295 and 1299 and was commissioned by church officials. The scene shows an overjoyed Saint Francis sharing the gospel with birds. The dimensions are 200cm by 270cm. This Fresno is an example of Italian religious art.
Tumblr media
"Equestrian Figure", Fourteenth Century.
This figure of a horseman comes from the fourteenth century Mali empire. The figure is made of terracotta or fired clay. This art is important as historical documentation of the Mali empire as the presence of the horse (an animal not native to Africa) indicates the wealth and abundance of the Mali empire. The figure is 70.5cm tall. The artist was an unknown Mali, but this work was likely commissioned by a notable, wealthy, or royal Mali. Unlike the previous European artworks noted the Mali empire was influenced by Islam.
Tumblr media
"Codex Borbonicus", Fifteenth Century.
The Codex Borbonicus is an Aztec manuscript that contains the Aztec calender documents the religious practices of the Aztec people. It was taken by Spanish conquistadors during the Spanish-Aztec war (1519-1521) and brought to Europe. The codex is one of the most important surviving Aztec works as many religious and cultural works were destroyed when the Spanish deemed them demonic. The Codex was originally written in pictorial and logographic symbols. The codex is 14.2 meters long and 39 cm wide. The codex is the Aztec equivalent of a tapestry and is written on Amate paper, note the similarities to the Bayeux Tapestry. The culture is Aztec.
The cultural effect of the Spanish/Aztec is an interesting reminder that not all cultural exchanges are peaceable or voluntary, sometimes cultural change knocks and sometimes it breaks down your door. In my opinion successful economies and powerful militaries are likely the cause of the most incendiary and frenetic cultural changes.
Tumblr media
"The Burial of the Count of Orgaz", Sixteenth Century
"The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" is a 1588 painting by El Greco. The painting done was to document and honor the death of the mayor of the town of Orgaz, Spain. The Mayor Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo donated a considerable sum of money to the church of Santo Tome where he wished to be buried. After his death the church parish used some of the donation to contract a memorial painting of the Don. The painting is oil on canvas, and the dimensions of the painting are 480 cm × 360 cm.
The Painting is sectioned bilaterally with the upper half showing heaven and the lower half showing the terrestrial realm. This painting shows the influence of Spain, Catholicism, and greek orthodoxy The painting shows themes common in counter-reformation artwork like the emphasis on catholic beliefs and values such as the veneration of the saints, saintification, and the presence of the catholic clergy. The exaggeration in this Painting also displays values of late manneristic art.
This painting may have had personal significance to the Greek born "El Grecco" as Don Toledo was one of descendants of the Palaiologos family last ruling dynasties of the Byzantine Empire.
Tumblr media
"Self Portrait", Seventeenth Century
Self Portrait by Thomas Smith was an oil on canvas self portrait. Thomas Smith was an early American settler who was a puritan, sailor, artist, and slave trader. This painting is one of the earliest documented self portraits of American artists. The skull on the bottom left of the painting serves as a memento mori. The letter on which the skull rests is a rant about sin, death, and isolation. The culture is Anglo/American and their is an obvious English influence. While it is not overt this painting does have religious context and inclination, the subject is dressed in the typical clothes of a puritan, the memento mori and letter also suggest themes of Christianity. The dimensions are 24.5in Height and 23.75in Width.
Tumblr media
"Fishing in Springtime" Eighteenth century
Fishing in Springtime was an artpiece by Japanese artist Ike No Taiga completed in 1747. This is a Japanese naturalistic landscape piece. The medium is hanging scroll, ink, and silk. There is an obvious Asian influence over this piece, Taiga was taught in calligraphy and religion by Zen monks as a youth. The culture is Japanese Endo period.
This type of painting is called Bunjinga and was a Japanese take on a Chinese nanshūga style of painting. Bunjinga and Nanshūga were naturalistic and intellectual styles of art. Note the similarities between Fishing in Springtime and Wind and Snow in the Fir Pines by Li Shan.  The painting measures 124 x 49.4 cm. The Inter-Asian cultural exchange became less of a give and take and more of an exercises in racial and cultural supremacy with the formation of the Japanese empire in 1868.
Tumblr media
"The Tortoise Trainer", Nineteenth Century
The Tortoise Trainer is an oil on canvas painting by Osman Hamdi Bey. This painting was created in 1906 of his own initiative and was not commissioned. The painting was Osama's criticism of the political governance of the Ottoman empire. The older man wearing tradition Turkish clothes represents the Ottoman ruling class who attempts to direct and train turtles who represent the lesser officials and governors but they seemingly ignore him to eat lettuce. The setting of the painting takes place in the Green Mosque of Bursa, Turkey. The dimensions are 221.5 cm × 120.0 cm.
Perhaps it was prophetic that the Ottoman empire would collapse a mere eleven years later following the end of world war one (1914-1918).The old man is likely Sultan Abdülhamid who attempted to introduce a series of social reforms which generally failed or seemed ineffective. Osman studied art in France and was influenced by French Orientalist art, Osama remained close with his contacts and friends in the European art world throughout his life. This piece was first displayed in the Grand Palies of the Paris Salon in 1906. The culture of the art is Turkish but the art and artist was influenced by Islam, French orientalism.
Something to note in this artwork is the motif of symmetrical geometric shapes. Evident in the floor tiles, to the tortoise shells, the hexagonal designs up the wall, the bricklaying patterns, and the intricate squiggly lines of the arch.
Conclusion
In conclusion we have seen how art influences art. The arc of Christian art from the Crucifix of Gero to the violent Spanish Catholic conquest of the Aztec peoples. We have seen how the Arab conquest and the spread of Islam influenced as far the people of Mali and the Ottoman Empire. We have seen the influence of Asian landscape art effecting each other internationally through six hundred years. The embodiment of a societies' creative essence is art and it effects everything it interacts with, be it through the loving brotherhood of Islam or Christianity, or the sword of an Arab conquerer or Spanish Conquistador. Art influences art.

Of Being a Ladybug 14
PREVIOUS     MASTER POST
Notes! @afewnovelideas you will find out about Jason in this! As for Barbara, I like her Oracle line the best, but frankly, a lot has happened, and she won’t be a huge factor in this story until way down the road.
@vixen-uchiha yes… I have. I am all caught up on Season 3 (finally) but I actively reject pretty much everything after Chameleon (which is when I started planning and outlining this story). I did take certain factors into this though, such as Marinette’s expulsion from school and Lila working with Gabriel. I just… am not restarting the Order quite yet.
This is not a heavy salt fic because these are naïve kids. Alya is just clueless and in denial, but not a bad person.
SEND ME ASKS!!!
The Cons of not knowing
(- - )
Tim stared at the screen in disbelief. Bruce sighed tiredly, wiping his hand down his face. He looked tired; Tim noted absentmindedly. Bags under his eyes indicating he hadn’t slept at all the night before. Dirt under his fingernails showing he’d gone to help in the city graveyards.
“An Akuma… Holy…” Tim couldn’t even think straight right now. Tim’s whole world was spinning off its axel. An Akuma. Joker was an Akuma all along. Who made him? Why? What were they thinking? What was the plan? And most importantly, were there others?
“He’s in Gotham General. He gets flashes sometimes, but he has no idea what is going on. Nothing makes sense to him. He’s asking about his mother and girlfriend, both deceased. He’s asking about Thomas Wayne” Bruce shakes his head. The world was going wonky.
“I… I can’t even make sense of this. How… what…?” Tim was beyond words right now. The Miracles didn’t have a lot of knowledge or understanding about the Miraculi. They knew how to use their powers and how to take down Akuma, but they were not detectives and they were not natural fighters. If anything, most of them were pacifists. But when he asked them and their kwami about the TWENTY-YEAR OLD AKUMA in Gotham, everybody just blinked.
“I’m going to see if Marinette has any insight. I’ll send Miss Seely back when she wakes up.”
The screen went blank and Tim just sat there. An Akuma… The implications…JASON!
He quickly fumbled his phone out in front of him and called Jason’s number. Nothing. He kept trying another three times before he remembered Cass was with him.
“Tim?”
“WHERE IS JASON?” He shouted. No, he didn’t normally get along well with Jason, but this…
“He is in the hospital. He got caught by the Horse Miraculous and was put into a windowless, doorless enclosure deep underground. He passed out from lack of oxygen before Constantine could get him out. What is wrong?”
“Are you at the hospital now? I need you to go to him immediately!”
“Why is this so urgent, Timothy?”
“BECAUSE JOKER WAS AN AKUMA!!!!”
There was a pause on the other end.
“Shit! I’ll call you back.”
Tim stared at his phone. Nothing for it now but to wait. He texted Dick. And tapped his foot impatiently while he waited. He stood up to pace. After a few runs of his apartment he checked his phone. A minute had passed. He texted Bruce about Jason. He continued pace. He’d never been very patient.
<(**)>
Marinette was sitting at the mega computer in the cave, staring listlessly at the screen, even as she typed another search into the bar. Bruce had received a text after the bombshell she had dropped and gone very pale. He’d run off to who-knows-where. Marinette had eaten breakfast and dragged her sore body down to the cave. She was no detective, but she could maybe write out what she knew, and hope Bruce could make sense of it all later.
According to my Miraculous tutor, the Miraculi are jewels that were created by a mage thousands of years ago, allowing the Gods of complex and abstract ideas, concepts or emotions to be combined with them and their powers harnessed. Created with the sole purpose of helping humanity, the Kwami were happy to serve, but eventually decided that there should be a way of controlling who received a Miraculous. And so, the Order of the Guardians came to be and then just as quickly destroyed. After the destruction of the Temple, the codex of information and two of the inner circle Miraculi were lost. Originally, Master Fu and I had thought that Hawkmoth had corrupted Nooroo, that Dusuu was likely broken in the collapse of the temple. However, with the new knowledge of Joker having been Akumatized for twenty years, it leads me to believe that either Nooroo was compromised before this or was desperately sending butterflies out in hopes of being found.
The Kwami can use their powers on their own, but the results are normally chaotic, as humans have been their main way of channelling them for so long. Some examples of failed attempts for Kwami to use their powers include the extinction of the dinosaurs, the fall of Atlantis, the leaning of the tower of Pisa, the plague and the Lazarus Pits. Many of these happened when Kwami were unbound.
“Marinette?” she turned to see Marlene walking towards her.
“How are you feeling?” she asked, closing the screen and turning around.
“Like I got hit by truck… thank you for your help last night. Tikki says that if you hadn’t offered your energy to me, the cure would have kept draining me until all the life had been drained from every single cell in my body. It’s the price I pay for not being a proper match…” Marlene was looking off into the cave, rubbing her neck.
“What do mean sucking your life force out?!”
“Let me explain,” Tikki popped out of Marlene’s jacket, “She means that, because she and I aren’t really compatible at all, that every time she uses the cure, it drains a little bit of life energy out of her.”
“WHAT?!” Marinette started to hyperventilate. Being Ladybug was LITERALLY KILLING MARLENE!
“It’s okay, normally the cure doesn’t need much, since it uses the magic of the Akuma to reverse the damage. At most, Marlene is loosing a few minutes every time she casts. If you hadn’t stepped in last night, then yeah, she would have died or lost quite a few years off her life it had been anyone else stepping in, but because it was you, you were able to take the strain completely onto yourself. You haven’t gone through the training, and neither did Master Fu, for all his good intentions. Marlene is a good person and a good TEMPORARY holder, but YOU are the best person to wield me and get the best results. Chat was a bad match, followed by, who should have been a good match but is corrupted. YOU are the only one who can stop this Marinette.”
“I can’t leave right now…”
“When the time is right, you will know. We all will.”
Tikki disappeared back to her pocket and Marlene stood there completely perplexed.
“Ah, Miss Seely. Time to be heading back to Paris. There is a Zeta Tube not far from here, and I will be happy to escort you there myself” Alfred offered, nodding to Marinette.
{ J }
In a hospital in Cologne Germany, Jason Todd slowly regained consciousness. He couldn’t really remember what happened, but looking around, he realized he was in a hospital bed. What the hell?
“Jason! You’re awake! Thank goodness” a girl with blue almond-shaped eyes and black hair came running into the room.
“Who the hell are you?”

Repainted Miniatures in the Frédéric Spitzer Hours
Fifty-two discoveries from the BiblioPhilly project, No. 38/52
Book of Hours for the Use of Paris, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1945-65–5, p. 351 and 363 (detail of retouched miniature of Saint Michael; detail of unretouched miniature of Saints George and Lawrence)
The Austrian-born, Paris-based dealer-collector Baron Frédéric Spitzer (1815–1890) is well known to those who study medieval and Renaissance art on account of his famed collection of over 4,000 items, which was sold off after his death, and also on account of the numerous deceptive objects that passed through his hands at one point in time or another. In partnership with the restorer Reinhold Vasters, Spitzer orchestrated the production of misleading objects that he sold on the art market for enormous profit.  These ran the gamut from outright forgeries, fakes, and pastiches to historicizing originals and honest replicas. A contemporary overview of his collection, before it became notorious for containing questionable objects, is provided here. Recently, Paola Cordera has written a monograph dealing with Spitzer’s wider role in the broader culture of the time, which also includes a list of the 3369 items in the 1893 auction, 508 items in the 1895 auction, and 686 items in the 1929 auction.1
The Spitzer Collection was famous for its astounding array of decorative arts, many of which remain legitimate masterpieces, but its manuscript holdings are less well-known today. Forty-three manuscripts are included in the 1893 catalogue of his posthumous sale, with most being recorded in the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts. A number of items stayed in France: at least three high-quality Books of Hours from the Spitzer Collection are now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France: MS Smith-Lesouëf 39 (lot 3012 in the sale) and MS NAL 3090, and MS NAL 3187 (no. 3016 in the sale). One manuscript, however, is now in Philadelphia: PMA 1945–65–5. This Spitzer provenance was noted when the item was acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the Phillip S. Collins bequest.2 As per the Schoenberg Database manuscript record, the Philadelphia book would appear to be identifiable as item 3005 in the sale, which is described as having 298 folios and a modern red vellum binding (details that match the PMA manuscript). In Cordera’s catalogue, item 3005 is erroneously equated with the DeBuz Hours, now at the Houghton Library, Harvard (MS Richardson 42), but that book appears to have been item 3006 (the folio count and binding match up).3 Incidentally, the DeBuz Hours was also at one point in Philadelphia, as it belonged to the local collector George C. Thomas around 1900, before being sold on by Rosenbach to William King Richardson in 1947.  Cordera provides some additional information regarding the later purchasers of items 3005 and 3006 at the 1893 Spitzer sale: the former was bought by Bourgeois Frères of Cologne and the latter was bought by Godefroy Bauer of Paris. Whether these two buyers were also mixed up (i.e. whether our book was bought from the Spitzer sale by Bourgeois or Bauer) remains unclear.
In any event, the Philadelphia Book of Hours contains a fine cycle of early-fifteenth-century miniatures typical of Northern France. However, unnoticed until now are the various retouched miniatures. The whereabouts of the Book of Hours between its sale from the Spitzer collection and its acquisition by the wealthy Philadelphia publisher Phillip S. Collins, whose widow donated it to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is uncertain (though as seen above it may have passed through a bookseller in Cologne or Paris). However, given Spitzer’s lack of qualms about re-working other medieval objects, it seems safe to assume that the modifications occurred while the book was in Spitzer’s hands. The book appears to be in generally good condition, so the intervention is limited to those areas that appear to have been worn selectively.
The first obviously retouched miniature occurs in the calendar. Here, the surface of the parchment has clearly suffered some damage. Even from the digital photo, the dissimilarity in surface between the somewhat blotchy square vignettes of the harvester and Leo and the rubbed line of text above is obvious. This can be contrasted with the subtlety of the vignettes for the other months, which appear unaltered.
PMA, 1945–65–5, p. 13 (first half of calendar for July; detail of the retouched Labor of the Month and Zodiac vignettes)
PMA, 1945–65–5, p. 7 (first half of calendar for April; detail of the unretouched Labor of the Month and Zodiac vignettes)
Other miniatures, like the Flight into Egypt and the Suffrages for Saint Michael (see above), Saints Roman and Audoenus/Ouen/Owen, and Saint Genevieve also bear traces of partial repainting. The retouched areas, usually limited to the heads of figures, are quite easy to spot. Several of these zones appear to have been subjected to localized damage prior to being repainted, perhaps caused by an early user of the book rubbing or kissing certain images of special importance. Of course, retouching illuminated manuscripts with anything approaching the finesse of the originals is notoriously difficult, but not impossible, as other examples preserved in Philadelphia prove. Recent research has also harnessed technical analysis to confirm the use of modern pigments in suspected forged miniatures elsewhere. However, the built-in protection of miniatures provided by the codex format, combined with the ready visibility of repaints, saved the manuscript trade from the pervasive reworkings and outright fakes that plagued the Old Masters paintings and medieval “minor” arts markets at the end of the nineteenth century, at the very time when the Spitzer Collection was being dispersed.
Nevertheless, the following images remind us that many such alterations remain to be spotted.
PMA, 1945–65–5, p. 171 (Vespers of the Hours of the Virgin with retouched miniature of the Flight into Egypt; detail of miniature)
PMA, 1945–65–5, p. 378 (Suffrage for Saints Roman and Audoenus/Ouen/Owen; detail of miniature)
PMA, 1945–65–5, p. 424 (Suffrage for Saint Genevieve; detail of miniature)

Historical past of Audio
The earliest types of tunes were possibly drum-based, percussion devices being essentially the most readily available on the time (i.e. rocks, sticks). These easiest of straightforward instruments are imagined to acquire been employed in spiritual ceremonies as representations of animals.
There was no notation or crafting of the sort of "music" and its seems can only be extrapolated through the songs of (South) American Indians and African natives who however adhere to a lot of the historical spiritual practices.
As for your much more highly developed instruments, their evolution was slow and constant. It can be identified that by 4000 BCE the Egyptians had developed harps and flutes, and by 3500 BCE lyres and double-reeded clarinets experienced been developed.
In Denmark, by 2500 BCE an early method of the trumpet had been made. This trumpet is exactly what has become often known as a "natural trumpet." It can be valveless, and depends wholly on manipulation of your lips to vary pitch.
One of one of the most popular devices today was developed in 1500 BCE from the Hittites. I am talking about the guitar. This was an excellent action; using frets to alter the pitch of a vibrating string would result in later on instruments including the violin and harpsichord.
In 800 BCE the primary recovered bit of recorded songs was identified. It was composed in cuneiform and was a religious hymn. It should be observed that cuneiform is not a sort of musical notation.
By 700 BCE you will discover records of tracks which include vocals with instrumentals. This extra a complete new dimension to new music: accompaniment.
Audio in Historic Rome and Greece Greece was the root of all Classical art, so it's no coincidence that Classical tunes is rooted in Grecian innovations. In 600 BCE, famed mathematician Pythagorus dissected songs for a science and developed the keystone of contemporary new music: the octave scale. The value of this celebration is clear. Audio was a enthusiasm of the Greeks. With their surplus of leisure time (because of slave labor) they ended up able to cultivate fantastic creative techniques. Trumpet competitions were being popular spectator activities in Greece by 400 BCE. It absolutely was in Greece which the 1st bricks in new music theory's basis ended up layed. Aristotle wrote on audio concept scientifically, and brought about a approach of notation in 350 BCE. The operate of that genius continues to be analyzed nowadays.
The subsequent considerable action in music's evolution was by Boethius. In 521 CE he introduced the Greek process of notation to Western Europe, permitting the musicians there to scribe correctly the folks tunes in their lands. Incidentally, it absolutely was Boethius who 1st wrote around the strategy in the opera.
Tunes from the Center Ages A lot of the tunes made immediately after Rome fell was commissioned through the church. The Catholic faith contains a extended background of involvement (for much better or worse) together with the musical arts. In 600 CE Pope Gregory experienced the Schola Cantarum developed. This was the primary tunes college in Europe.
Meanwhile in China, new music was progressing also: it was claimed that in 612 CE there have been orchestras with many hundreds of musicians doing for your assorted dynasties. Although the specific audio from this era in China is unknown, the unique design and style supposed to have designed there exists reflected even in latest orchestral Asiatic parts.
In 650 CE a new procedure of writing songs was formulated employing "neumes" being a notation for groups of notes in new music.
one hundred forty four several years once the Schola Cantarum was constructed, a singing faculty opened from the Monastery of Fuda, fueling the fascination in musical vocation. And by 790 CE, there have been splinters on the Schola Cantarum in Paris, Cologne and Metz. In 800 CE the good unifier Charlemagne had poems and psalms set to audio. In 850 CE Catholic musicians experienced a breakthrough by inventing the church "modes." These modes would afterwards metamorphose into modern big and minor scales. In 855 CE, the very first polyphonic (two unrelated melodies/voices at the same time) piece was recorded, and by 1056 this polyphonic design replaced Gregorian chants given that the audio of preference (even once the Church built polyphonic music "illegal"; this ban was later on lifted).
