🖼François Ier reçoit les derniers soupirs de Léonard de Vinci 👤Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres 📆1818 📏40 x 50,5 cm 📍Petit Palais, Paris 🔸🔶🔸 Pour cette œuvre de commande, Ingres illustre le thème très prisé au XIXeme siècle de « François Ier, protecteur des arts ». Le peintre suit le récit de la mort de Léonard relaté par Vasari dans son ouvrage « vies des meilleurs peintres, sculpteurs et architectes ». Le trépas de de Vinci y est décrit ainsi : « le roi survint qui avait coutume de lui rendre souvent d’affectueuses visites. Avec déférence, Léonard se redressa sur son lit, expliquant sa maladie (...). Vint un spasme avant coureur de la mort; le roi se dressa, lui pris la tête pour la soutenir et lui manifester sa tendresse en soulageant sa souffrance. Comprenant qu’il ne pourrait recevoir de plus grand honneur, cet être d’essence divine expira entre les bras du roi a l’âge de 75 ans. » . Selon Stendhal, il s’agirait d’une légende car François Ier se trouvait à St Germain en Laye ce jour-là et non au clos-Lucé, la dernière demeure de Léonard de Vinci. Mais peu importe la vérité puisque Ingres, à travers son tableau, exalte la relation du roi mécène et du génie.
