So, anyway. I didn't technically close up shop here until June. I had already listened to so many records by then. It would be a shame not to drop (at least) one more year end list. The funny thing is that I have listened to more records this year than I have in recent years. All told, I ended up listening to around 125 new releases this year. I kept pretty detailed notes about most of them. I could have easily turned that into reviews or content. I would have stopped listening to new records had I done that though. Turning my enjoyment of music into a thing was a mistake. Anyway. Here is the list. It's 40 records. A good amount of these are jazz. Just be aware. If you're looking for dope punk rock records, this probably won't be the list for you.
In alphabetical(ish) order:
Alice Sandahl - "Bright & Blue"
Alison Shearer - "View From Above"
Alvvays - "Blue Rev"
Angel Olsen - "Big Time"
Anthony Coleman & Brian Chase - "Arcades"
Barrie - "Barbara"
The Beths - "Expert In A Dying Field"
The Bogie Band & Joe Russo - "The Prophets In The City"
Camilla George - "Ibio-Ibio"
Chicago Soul Jazz Collective - "On The Way To Be Free"
Dave Gisler Trio - "See You Out There"
David Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7 - "Plague Doctor"
Georgia Harmer - "Stay In Touch
High Alpine Hut Network - "727 / 16 EP"
Jeanines - "Don’t Wait For A Sign"
Jobber - "Hell In A Cell EP"
Julieta Eugenio - "Jump"
Kate Bollinger - "Look At It In The Light"
Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren - "Vermillion"
Kristine Leschper - "The Opening, Or Closing Of A Door"
Lisa Ullén, Elsa Bergman, & Anna Lund - "Space"
Little Low - "Reasons To Grow"
Lupe Fiasco - "Drill Music In Zion"
Marta Sanchez - "SAAM (Spanish American Art Museum)"
Mary Halvorson - "Amaryllis" / "Belladonna"
Melissa Aldana - "12 Stars"
Nectar - "No Shadow"
The New York Second - "Music At Night"
ORD - "Hemligheter På Vägen"
Otoboke Beaver - "Super Champon"
Perennial - "In The Midnight Hours"
Potsa Lotsa XL & Youjin Sung - "Gaya"
Quelle Chris - "Deathfame"
R.A.P. Ferreira - "5 To The Eye With Stars"
Renata Zeiguer - "Picnic In The Dark"
Tender Slit - "Tender Slit"
Tomberlin - "I Don't Know Who Needs To Hear This..."
Walking Cliché Sextet - "Micro-Nap"
Westbound Train - "Dedication"
Widowspeak - "The Jacket"
I've included that Spotify playlist. It has stuff from most of these records, and some other stuff. Maybe I'll throw something up in 2023? Who knows. It's what it's

[IDs: Three different digital drawings, all in a simple, cartoony style. The drawings are of personifications of various Blaseball teams. The first image is a 3-panel comic showing the Millennials and the Garages, the second is an edited XKCD comic showing the Magic and the Spies, and the third is a collection of various drawings, with tumblr posts assigned to the characters who are "saying" them.
The Millennials are a person with light pink and blue hair in a half-ponytail, wearing a hoodie and with a visor displaying emojis on it over their eyes. They say "girl u r (caps) killing it!", making finger guns and smiling while the emojis displayed on their visor are the double exclamation marks, fire, and 100. They then cross their arms and say "girl idt its (caps) moving anymore" as the visor emojis switch to the fire and two different question marks. In the final panel, they hold out their hands with an expression of distress, visor emojis now the exclamation mark, raised hand, and stop sign, and say "girl u can stop biting", with "girl" and "stop biting" in caps. The third panel also shows the Garages, who have blue sideshaved hair and are surrounded by blue fire, angrily biting at the png of the melted Coin/Boss.
The Magic are a person with dark brown skin and dark green, braided hair, wearing a light yellow ranger's uniform and a pink wizard's cloak and hat. They stand next to a tree and speak into a walkie-talkie, saying "the eagle has left the nest!" with a look of delight. The comic then shows the Spies, who are a person with pale skin and black hair with lavender streaks, wearing a trenchcoat, fedora, scarf, and sunglasses, so their features are almost entirely obscured. They are also holding a walkie-talkie, and say "*khhkht* roger that. alert the agents." *khhhkht*" The Magic turn to them with a look of annoyance, throwing their hands in the air and saying "will you stop that?" (stop that is italicized). The Spies are then drawn in only lineart, with the lines being partially erased and the caption/sound effect "*abscond*".
The various characters shown saying posts are: 1: the Firefighters, who are a person with pale skin, fire hair in a high bun, and blurred fire emojis for eyes, holding a piece of paper that is shown in an inset to read "you have mental illinois" and happily saying "i have been diagnosed with chicago". 2: the Sunbeams, who are a person with light brown skin, short yellow hair, multiple arms and eyes, a slight yellow glow behind their head, sitting in a red area with white bones jabbing up from the ground and saying with a happy expression "(sitting in the pit) you guys really make this hell-hole a hell-home [blushing emoji]". 3: The Jazz Hands, who are a person with light skin and short light blue hair that fades to white wearing a bowtie and top hat, pointing at a purple card reading "xvi" while saying with an angry expression "Pilots, if you keep this shit up you're going to find out why the tower is considered the most evil tarot card". 4: The Crabs, a person with brown skin, short brown hair in a ponytail, a crab claw in place of their right hand, crab-colored patches on their face, and antennae, are smiling while saying "well i can comprehend these manmade horrors perfectly so idk skill issue". 5: The Tigers, a person with light brown skin, short orange hair, and a tiger tail and ears, wearing sunglasses and sitting in an inner tube, grinning and saying "floating down the river styx on an inflatable donut and high-fiving all the lost souls i pass. i'm on vacation". They have one hand raised to high-five another, ghostly hand. End IDs.]
now that we know a team is canonically a Thing that can Do Stuff (like become an Ace??? maybe?? listen just go with it) i feel justified in posting these. also i've been getting too many followers anyway, i need to thin the pack with some good old-fashioned Weird Cringe Nonsense (proud)

tag game— spelling out your URL with songs! I was tagged by @purplemuskrat. I will follow my friend's lead and add some commentary. It took me a few days to consider the options, but I like my collection of songs. I think they fit me quite well.
Drowning by Joe Jackson - I connected with this song when Joe Jackson released his album Laughter & Lust in 1991. It rattled around in my brain looking for a cause, which it would find in 2005. At the time, I had just wrapped up my 11th play as a high school director and although I was looking forward to the next show, I realized that my darling bride was pregnant, we would soon have four kids under the age of 6, and I needed to step away to spend as much time as possible at home. The drowning in this song refers to the end of a romantic relationship. However, as I sat on an empty stage, the lyrics took on a new meaning. "I don't love you, but I'm lost," are the opening words. I realized that, in that moment, I didn't have the deep love of theatre that had been central to my being, but felt lost in the need to walk away from it. This song made it easier to do just that, until I was ready to return.
Root Beer Rag by Billy Joel - From his 1974 album Streetlife Serenade, this instrumental is lively and witty and just picks you up and carries you with it. It is a beautiful marriage of Rock and Ragtime as you will ever find.
All Along the Watchtower arranged by Bear McCreary - Originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1967 and memorably recorded a year later by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, this version that was an integral part (in instrumental form) in the latter half of season 3 of the Battlestar Galactica reboot, its full exposure in the final episode of that season was haunting as many hinted secrets were revealed. I get chills anytime I hear it.
Make Me Smile by Chicago - This song begins a seven-song cycle which the band refers to as Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon (Make Me Smile - So Much to Say, So Much to Give - Anxiety's Moment - West Virginia Fantasies - Colour My World - To Be Free - Now More Than Ever) from the 1970 double album Chicago II lays out the story of composer and the band's trombonist and his attempt to win back the love of his ex-fiancé.
Accountancy Shanty by Monty Python - Formally known as The Crimson Permanent Assurance, this song is from a short film that opened Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It speaks well for my love of absurdist humor.
Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney - From his 1970 debut solo album, the lyrics just haunt me. "Maybe, I'm amazed at the way you love me all the time/And maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you." I thought about these words when my darling bride asked me, after six years of friendship, why I had never asked her out.
Alive by Hiromi - A jazz pianist, this song opens her 2014 album of the same name. The song grabs you by the lapels of the jacket you are wearing and won't let go until you are fully engrossed in the journey.
Take Her to the Mardi Gras by Harry Connick Jr - I feel lucky that I purchased the 2007 album Oh My NoLa from Walmart, because this track was only placed on copies of the CD sold in those stores. It is another "hold on tight and don't let go" kind of song ... one I wish was available for karaoke, because I would be on that stage in a heartbeat.
Hearts by Yes - Truth be told, I could have probably done this entire list with nothing by music from Yes. They have invented and reinvented themselves for 50 years. Again, it is the lyrics that just haunted me upon first listen. "Set your heart sail on the river (Hearing)/Look around you as you drift downstream (Talking)/Pouring souls into the ocean (Love you)/Take account of all you've seen."
If you have made it this far, I hope you enjoyed my journey and perhaps, find yourself a new song to put into your rotation. Thank you, purplemuskrat, for the inspiration.

Moor Mother - Jazz Codes - such a singular creative force that she can get anyone she wants on her record, so--lots of guests on this new album, but the sound and vision are unmistakably Moor Mother
Called “the poet laureate of the apocalypse” by Pitchfork, Moor Mother is announcing ‘Jazz Codes'. Coming out on July 1, it is her second album for ANTI- and a companion to her celebrated 2021 release ’Black Encyclopedia of the Air‘. ’Jazz Codes’ uses poetry as a starting point, but the collection moves toward more melody, more singing voices, more choruses and more complexity. In its warm, densely layered course through jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop, ’Jazz Codes’ sets the ear blissfully adrift and unhitches the mind from habit. Through her work, Ayewa illuminates the principles of her interdisciplinary collaborative practice Black Quantum Futurism, a theoretical framework for creating counter-chronologies and envisioning Black quantum womanist futures that rupture exclusionary versions of history and future through art, writing, music, and performance. Moor Mother - aka the songwriter, composer, vocalist, poet, and visual artist Camae Ayewa – is also a professor at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. She released her debut album Fetish Bones in 2016 and has since put out an abundance of acclaimed music, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians who share her drive to dig up the untold. She is a member of many other groups including the free jazz group Irreversible Entanglements, 700 bliss and moor jewelry. She has also toured and recorded with The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Nicole Mitchell.

Joan Shelley — The Spur (No Quarter)
Tumblr media
youtube
Joan Shelley recorded her sixth full-length record in the late stages of pregnancy in rural Kentucky during the COVID-19 lockdown. It’s the kind of situation that focuses a person on essentials, on home and family and clean, uncluttered music. Even so, while this latest collection of songs is earthy and grounded, it is far from sparse. These are lovely, gracefully-shaped tunes, embellished, as needed, with guitar, strings, keyboards, acoustic bass and percussion. They have a wonderful clarity to them, but not a hint of austerity.
Many artists struggled to make music during the lockdown months, grappling with anxiety and isolation that made creativity difficult. Shelley found a workaround, enlarging her world without straying far from the patch of land she and her husband, Nathan Salsburg, inhabit. She joined a weekly songwriters’ group and tested many of these songs with other musicians. She reached out to collaborators, like Bill Callahan and the author Max Porter, to shake up her lyric-writing process. She brought in James Elkington to help with production and arrangement, and he, in turn, enlisted a slew of Chicago-based artists to play on the songs: Nick Macri on bass, Lia Kohl on cello and Spencer Tweedy on drums. Living amid goats and chickens but connected to a wide-flung community of artists, Shelley found an equilibrium between the space and solitude she needed to concentrate and the ongoing conversation with the world that artists require to keep the ideas flowing.
Thus, there is both warmth and quiet in this collection of songs, which range from country folk to blues to rowdy, twanging rock. On the subdued side, the Bill Callahan-assisted “Amberlit Morning” is a clear highlight, its regular lattice-like picking underlined by blues-y bends on electric. Callahan shadows Shelley’s water-pure soprano, as the rattle of hand drums builds space and urgency between verses. “Breath for the Boy,” written with Max Porter, is piano-based and more modern sounding, Shelley finding a cool, breathy timbre that’s nearer jazz than country. The title track sidles and slides in a blues-y way; Shelley takes on a gutsy, twangy tone.
All these are subtle, surpassingly pretty songs, but you really get a sense for Shelley as a songwriter in “Like the Thunder.” It’s the disc’s rocking-est tune, a muted rollick in its twining country guitars. Its call and response swells, and as it goes on, you can imagine it interpreted by other artists—louder, more distorted rock bands, contemplative singer songwriters, brassy soul bands, even. It is such a good song that it almost immediately suggests other possibilities, which take nothing away from the way it’s presented here. If Shelley wanted to write for country stars, she could. She’s as at good at making songs as she is at interpreting them, and that’s pretty good.

Unveiling the Global Phenomenon: The Cultural Odyssey of Jazz
Jazz, with its roots entrenched in the soulful rhythms of African American culture, has blossomed into a global phenomenon, captivating audiences with its expressive melodies and vibrant improvisations. Emerging from the crucible of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, jazz was born out of the cultural fusion of African musical traditions, European harmonies, and American ingenuity. Initially played in the bars and brothels of the Crescent City, jazz quickly spread its wings, migrating northward to cities like Chicago and New York, where it found a new audience eager to embrace its infectious rhythms and spirited improvisations.
What distinguishes jazz from other musical genres is its emphasis on spontaneity and collaboration. At its core, jazz is a conversation between musicians, each contributing their unique voice to the collective improvisation. Whether trading solos in a smoky jazz club or riffing off each other's ideas in a jam session, jazz musicians engage in a dynamic dialogue that transcends language and cultural barriers.
Moreover, jazz is a genre that thrives on innovation and reinvention. From the bebop revolution of the 1940s to the fusion experiments of the 1970s, jazz has continuously evolved, absorbing influences from other musical traditions and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. Today, jazz remains as vibrant and eclectic as ever, with artists drawing inspiration from hip-hop, electronic music, and world music to create exciting new sounds and styles.
But beyond its musical virtuosity, jazz carries with it a profound cultural significance. As the voice of the African American experience, jazz has served as a vehicle for social commentary and political protest, reflecting the struggles and triumphs of a marginalized community. From the civil rights anthems of John Coltrane and Nina Simone to the defiant grooves of Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, jazz has always been a music of resistance and resilience, challenging the status quo and advocating for change.
In essence, jazz is more than just a genre of music – it is a celebration of the human spirit and the power of creativity to transcend adversity. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the modern world, let us draw inspiration from the rich tapestry of jazz, finding solace and strength in its soul-stirring melodies and timeless rhythms.

Another Top 20 Albums of 2023
“…And have I left anything out?” – albums of 2022:
E L U C I D – I Told Bessie: Elucid isn't a name I'd checked for since his 'Lessondary' days. To find out he's part of what I call the "Off-Kilter Hip-Hop Movement" was pretty welcome. 'Really enjoyed the flows and production but didn't come back to this enough...
EARTHGANG – GHETTO GODS: The Dungeon Family legacy lives on through this duo (not just them obviously). 'Some impressive flows, beats and messages. 'Another one I didn't come back to enough...
Ego Ella May – FIELDNOTES PT II: This chapter in the 'FIELDNOTES' series details the joy and excitement of a new relationship, only for it to end so soon. The slower, at times stripped down Neo-Soul vibe conveys this well...
Joe Armon-Jones & Fatima – Tinted Shades: A welcome collection of Jazz-influenced Soul from this partnership. An album would be welcome...
Joey Bada$$ – 2000: 'A (spiritual?) sequel to '1999'. I found the lyrics more relatable this time around (especially on a track like 'Survivor's Guilt'). The production isn't as strong, which makes it's predecessor more enjoyable for me...
Quelle Chris – DEATHFAME: 'Some great production on here. I didn't fully absorb the theme of the album though...
Lucky Daye – Candydrip: Lucky Daye continues his streak of quality modern R'n'B. The mood of this album does remain quite samey; I need to be in a certain mood to return to this project...
Phife Dawg – Forever: Darting effortlessly between more vulnerable, reflective topics and braggadocios verses, this project is truly bittersweet...
Sudan Archives – Natural Brown Prom Queen: This is slightly more pop-leaning R'n'B, which contains the bluntness of a SZA or a Summer Walker and some great violin playing woven throughout the 18-track run. I genuinely forgot to put this in my honourable mentions last year...
KingKlavé – KingKlavé: This is just awesome hip-hop influenced jazz fusion! This may have made #19 last year...
2023:
20) Terrace Martin & Alex Isley – I Left my Heart in Ladera:
Tumblr media
Alex Isley takes a slight departure from the mellow, lo-fi sounds of ‘Marigold’ to deliver a deep R’n’B project with musician/super-producer Terrace Martin. At this point, you can generally depend on Terrace Martin to give us pleasing, west coast tinged melodies with a hint of 80s and 90s throwback. The centre-piece of this album brought a welcoming end of October for me. I’ve come back to this project a fair bit…
19) Alfa Mist – Variables:
Tumblr media
Alfa Mist’s playing has only become more assured with each project. The explorative melodies are accompanied with confident solos, well-placed vocals and the occasional rap verse from Mist himself. I haven’t played this very often throughout the year, but each time I do I think: “Why didn’t I?!!!??!”…
18) Butcher Brown – Solar Music:
Tumblr media
Elephant in the room (for me): The tracks getting shorter and shorter with each project is irksome. That being said, a lot of the music remains on the chipper, optimistic side, making this a particularly great listen when the sun is out. There are a couple of three to four track runs on here I often play through easily...
17) Gregory Hutchinson – Da Bang:
Tumblr media
After hearing the 30 second sampler of 'Blow Your Mind / Take it Back', 'Da Bang' became one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Unfortunately this did fall a little' short of my expectations; a lot of the instrumentals are great on initial listen, but can overstay their welcome without a chord progression or a breakdown (despite some again, criminally short tracks on here!). Pieces like 'My Turn Now', 'Losing You' and the aforementioned escape this criticism. 'Still an enjoyable listen...
16) Mick Jenkins – The Patience:
Tumblr media
This was a late entry to the list for me, literally hearing this on New Years Eve. The Chicago based emcee delivers a flurry of hungry, frustrated verses over his usual and more than welcome jazzy instrumentals. Despite my pedantry when it comes to this trend of short albums, 'The Patience' comes across as succinct, closing off nicely with the importance of remembering to take a breath and the value in learning patience...
15) Yasmin Lacey – Voice Notes:
Tumblr media
If this isn't UK Neo-Soul at its finest, it's pretty damn near! 'Voice Notes' opens with the very relevant message of just creating and releasing the project, whatever it is! The subject matter from there covers relationships (family, friends and romantic), cultural legacy, uncertainty and the difficulty that can come with trying to let go...
14) Pedro Martins – Rádio Mistério:
Tumblr media
This is my first venture into the music of guitarist Pedro Martins, outside of hearing his guest feature on Thundercat's 'It is What it is'. Needless to say I was not disappointed. A lot of the music harks back to the Jazz Rock Fusion era of the 70s, which works perfectly for me! Standouts for me include 'Liberdade', 'Estrela Do Rock n' Roll Do Planalto Central', 'Polos' and 'Kaya Noite'...
13) Kaidi Tatham – The Only Way:
Tumblr media
I'll refrain from saying the thing I've said every time Kaidi Tatham has released an album (you'll know what I mean if you go back through these lists...). What I will say is that there are some awesome track progressions on here, something that has become synonymous with the 2000black sound. I found 'Alien @$^%' particularly inspired, reaching into the frenetic sound that the broken beat genre has provided over the years. Kaidi's output continues to be insane (this isn't the thing I'm referring to...)...
12) Cherise – Calling:
Tumblr media
'Another anticipated album of 2023 for me! There are great soulful R'n'B pieces throughout this (solo) debut. While romantic love is a prominent topic on the album, the main theme for me is cultural impact and legacy, heard through the joyful thump of '2 Steppin'', the "barbecue during carnival" vibes on the title track and the various snippets of Cherise's grandmother telling her story...
11) Daniel Caesar – NEVER ENOUGH:
Tumblr media
'NEVER ENOUGH' departs from the more syrupy sentiments of a 'Best Part' or 'Blessed' and comes across way more brash over this stripped down, folksy, guitar-laden collection of ballads and reflections. Much like Caesar's previous work, the melodies are on the slower side, a few of them quite subdued. However, the vocal arrangements make these pretty easy for me to sing along to. 'NEVER ENOUGH' has only gotten better and better with each listen...
P.S.: *mumble mumble* 2019 *mumble* apology *mumble mumble*...
10) Lil' Yachty – Let's Start Here.:
Tumblr media
The first thing I noticed about the track listing was, the songs were actually over 2 bloody minutes!!!! The second thing I noticed when I clicked the sampler to the opening track 'the BLACK seminole.' was the psychedelic rock instrumental accompanying Yachty's vocals. The push over the edge was when Chris messaged me saying that this album was awesome. He wasn't wrong. Alternating between the more guitar and drum heavy moments of 'the BLACK seminole.' or 'IVE OFFICIALLY LOST ViSiON!!!!' and the poppy glide of tracks like 'running out of time' or 'drive ME crazy!', 'Let's Start Here.' marks a welcome turn for the once controversial emcee, although the question of why stepping away from the emceeing pillar of hip-hop is regarded as growth, is a valid discussion to have...
9) Kali Uchis – Red Moon In Venus:
Tumblr media
If anyone asked me why it took me so long to get into Kali Uchis, it would be valid. With delicate (sometimes grandiose) melodies and gentle vocal stylings, 'Red Moon In Venus' offers a more tender side of R'n'B that has taken a break in recent times. This being the case, the subject matter hovers around romantic love by and large (although the title involving the word 'Venus' should be a dead giveaway)...
8) JPEGMafia & Danny Brown – SCARING THE HOES... Startling the Maidens:
Tumblr media
JPEGMafia's off-kilter production style compliments Danny Brown's often frantic style of emceeing! Given the organised confusion (no pun intended...I think) of various sound bytes, harsh snares and the odd blast of synth, this album title is pretty apt...
7) Sampha – Lahai:
Tumblr media
After a slew of high profile features, Sampha returns with his deeply personal sophomore body of work. Musically, 'Lahai' contains elements of Broken Beat and the more modal electronic sound you might associate with a Floating Points or a Kirk Degiorgio. My favourites include 'Suspended', 'Jonathan L. Seagull' and 'Can't Go Back'...
6) Black Milk – Everybody Good?:
Tumblr media
Given the amount of projects that speak on the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on our mental health, I can't help but wonder if life has imitated art to an extent; I sometimes find myself referring to these kind of albums as 'Post-blip albums'. Black Milk reflects on how the pandemic has affected him and in doing so, gives us what I believe to be his magnum opus. The verses are succinct. The production is top notch, channeling the signature Detroit sound with higher chords conveying hope, a light in the tunnel and sometimes, surrealism. We also get a hell of a feature verse from Phonte at the back end of this project...
5) Gareth Donkin – Welcome Home:
Tumblr media
After a slew of singles over the years, musical prodigy Gareth Donkin releases his debut project. 'Welcome Home' plays as a bit of the throwback record, the bouncy drum patterns and synths taking us to the 80s. I did find this a bit of a shame as earlier singles like 'Inside' or 'Catharsis' were less on the nose with it. Tracks like 'Til' the End of Time (Night Sky)', 'By Your Side' and 'Tell Me Something' is why this is so high on the list (although I think September bias played a part too...).
Side note: I'm glad Gareth Donkin dropped the 'Master Soul Boy' moniker...
4) Ta-ku – Songs to Come Home to:
Tumblr media
Ta-ku wasn't a name I'd heard until I was looking for more music by ROMderful. That's when I came across the impressive opening single 'SMILE'. 'Songs to Come Home to' closes out a trilogy of 'Songs to *insert thing here* to' on a peaceful yet hopeful note. The subject matter remains mostly in the realm of romantic love, reflecting Ta-ku's own personal life. A lot of the music stays in the lo-fi vein, but the highs are just that. I found myself enjoying this the more I listened to it also...
3) Shafiq Husayn & The Dove Society – So Gold:
Tumblr media
One of the reluctant musical heroes of the West Coast returns! 'So Gold' continues in the vein of 'The Loop', utilising patchy drum loops to compliment the pleasing melodies and occasional beat change. 'So Gold' also takes the time to critique the more stereotypical side of black culture with advertisement interludes that wouldn't sound out of place on a show like 'South Side'. There are also a couple of call backs to Miquel Atwood-Fergusons string arrangement from 'Shafiq En A' Free-Ka's 'Dust and Kisses', a definitive favourite of my mine from the Sa-Ra founder...
2) Incognito – Into You:
Tumblr media
Despite Bluey's furious output with his other musical acts, the last few years have formed an Incognito shaped hole that I'd didn't realise was there until my excitement for 'Into You'. This album exceeded my expectations. 'Still fairly predictable, but recruiting Goldie collaborator Natalie Duncan and Soul/R'n'B act Cherri V keeps the sound fresh, while having vocal stalwart Tony Momrelle keeps it familiar. 'Into You' fits comfortably in the top half of an Incognito 'worst to best' list for me (I've been watching a lot of those recently)...
1)
Tumblr media
Miguel Atwood-Ferguson – Les Jardins Mystiques Vol. 1:
The Brainfeeder label has Miguel Atwood-Ferguson pick up where Kamasi Washington left off, giving us a triple album of 52 tracks and three and a half hours of music. We are gifted with a wide range of compositions featuring an all encompassing roster of musicians, evoking many emotions ranging from reflective, subdued, hopeful, enchanted, intense, relaxed, going as far as nostalgic; seriously. The many synth-programmed solos have me thinking of Nobuo Uematsu's compositions for the 'Final Fantasy' series (specifically 'FFIX'). There's a lot to come back to on here as many of the pieces are revisited through the three-disc run. My favourites are...too many to count. I have played 'Kairos (Amor Fati)' a lot though...
Honourable Mentions:
Zeñel – 5ive: 'An unofficial favourite of the year! 'Boss Drum' and the 'Aliens' suite are fantastic...
Golden Mean – Oumuamua: 'More great contemporary UK Jazz from the Jazz Re:freshed family...
Ashley Henry – My Voice: I've got so much time for an Ashley Henry release. The vocal tracks on here are beautiful...
Terrace Martin – Fine Tune: This album unofficially continues the 'Sounds of Crenshaw' series for me. 'Some great compositions and instrumentals from the middle to end...
ROMderful – ICE CREAM CLONES 2: 'An enjoyable collection of tracks from the ever more self-assured producer/musician...
Armand Hammer – We Buy Diabetic Test Strips: I don't know if I'm quite there yet with the appeal of Billy Woods but I enjoyed this a lot...
Summer Walker – CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP: This cemented my spring wonderfully...
Danny Brown – Quaranta: Danny Brown takes the time to share where he's been to get to this current stage of life...with much more rapping in his calmer persona...
Amber Navran – Knock on the Orange Door: Navran's talent shines behind the boards as well as on the horns, woodwinds and vocals...bloody hell!
Geneivah – Songs and Soliloquies: If self-care and self-affirmation were a soundtrack.

237: Various Artists // Howl...A Farewell Compilation of Unreleased Songs
Tumblr media
Howl...A Farewell Compilation of Unreleased Songs Various Artists 1994, Glitterhouse
Released in 1994 by German indie label Glitterhouse as a double 10”, Howl…A Farewell Compilation of Unreleased Songs collects 18 songs by a real odds and sods assortment of Americana, indie folk, and alt. country acts. I’m not super-familiar with Glitterhouse beyond the fact that they were Sub-Pop’s European distributor during that label’s 1987 to 1995 grunge apex. The patchy history recounted on the Glitterhouse website indicates they were making a turn towards singer-songwriter fare at the time the Sub-Pop relationship petered out, and I can imagine this comp serving as a sort of soft launch of the label’s new direction. I’m not sure how many of these artists were signed to the label directly, though presumably Glitterhouse distro’d a number of them. Iin any case, it makes for a great sampler of some of the better artists of the time who operated at the meeting place of roots and alternative music, many of them still active today, and mostly still lesser-known outside of connoisseur circles.
youtube
The best-known act on the comp today is easily the Mountain Goats, which I doubt anyone would’ve predicted in 1994—their contribution, “Against Agamemnon,” is typical of John Darnielle’s early direct-to-boombox sound, a bare sketch that refers obliquely to Greek mythology but could as easily describe waking up with a nosebleed on an existential camping trip. Steve Wynn (ex-Dream Syndicate) pops up in the midst of his wandering ‘90s period, and we’ve also got a desert jazz instrumental version of “Route 66” from the venerable Giant Sand, which anticipates the sound members John Covertino and Joey Burns would refine after departing to form Calexico. The next tier of notability down would be… I guess Vic Chesnutt, the devastating Georgian songwriter who offers a moving cover of Yoko Ono’s “Goodbye Sadness”; long-running heartland groovers the Silos (featuring Vulgar Boatmen founder Walter Salas-Humara) with the demo “Nothing But You”; alt. country forerunners Freakwater with their woozy “Lullaby”; and venerated songwriter Victoria Williams, who unfortunately contributes an irritating rendition of “Feed the Birds” from Mary Poppins.
Howl doesn’t transcend its times, but if you like this era of weird Americana, it makes for good company. You’ll likely pick up a band or five who’ve slipped your filter that you’ll want to check out (my pick being Chicago’s Souled American, whose woeful “Suitor’s Bridge” would see eventual re-release on their final record Notes Campfire).

John Lloyd Young's Favorite Broadway Things At 54 Below - The Possible Dream, The Reachable Star
If you believe in yourself, the dream is possible, and the star is reachable.
As John Lloyd Young recounted his path to Broadway success to all of us at 54 Below this week, that message was evident - and inspiring.
His carefully curated set was woven seamlessly with stories about his family, his childhood dreams, acting experiences, and the transition through time from LPs to cassettes and CDs as he grew from hopeful young boy to thriving triple threat.
JLY began his set with "So You Wanted To Meet The Wizard" from The Wiz, his first favorite show and the Tony-winning Best Musical in the year of his birth. He then moved into a soulful jazz rendition of "My Favorite Things" from The Sound Of Music...the version we didn't know that we needed until we heard it, but now want to hear all the time.
He explained that this show was about his favorite things - the songs, musicals, and moments that shaped his childhood and launched his musical theatre dreams. He also told us about working with Theodore Bikel in The Chosen, and the stories Mr. Bikel shared with him - like how the song "Edelweiss" was written especially for him as he originated the role of Captain Von Trapp on Broadway.
We moved into some more Rodgers and Hammerstein as JLY performed a rich, beautiful "I Have Dreamed", sharing stories with us about his childhood role in a production of The King And I...and several wonderful stories about how his favorite movie musicals tied in to his grandparents seeing the original Broadway casts of these musicals, and planting the seeds for his Broadway career.
One of these was a sweet story about his grandmother and Jerry Orbach, as he launched into a lively, animated "All I Care About" from Chicago. JLY would make an amazing Billy Flynn on Broadway, so I hope that is a dream that can come true in the future. He also shared a wonderful story about working with Mr. Orbach on Law & Order, illustrating his mentor's kindness to an up and coming actor.
Next up was the Beatles arrangement of "Till There Was You" from The Music Man, which sparked his dream of achieving the trifecta like Robert Preston did - originating a role on Broadway, winning the Tony, and making the movie for Warner Brothers. As we know JLY achieved that dream with Jersey Boys, giving new meaning to the term "triple threat". He followed that up with the romantic yet haunting "My Heart Stood Still", as told us that he believes that Lorenz Hart was the greatest lyricist in musical theatre.
His next dream came about as a young teenager, listening to the cast recording of Les Miserables. That dream came true in 2008 as he played Marius at the Hollywood Bowl...and the dream of hearing him as Marius came true for all of us as he performed a stunning, poignant "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables". It truly caused chills every single night, and I am so glad that it continues to be in his Broadway set.
At this point he introduced the band as they played "Ease On Down The Road" from The Wiz - Musical Director Ron Abel on piano, Sean Harkness on guitar, Derek Nievergelt on bass, and Ray Marchica on drums. Not only did they have several amazing solos throughout the night, but their cohesiveness as a group and with JLY really made everything even more magical.
The next song took everyone's breath away as well - JLY performed a special "Hopelessly Devoted To You" from Grease. The collective sigh throughout 54 Below continued every night this week as we got to hear the song from a new perspective, showcasing his incredible vocal range. Hoping this one stays around for future sets!
He told some interesting stories about making the Jersey Boys movie, and treated us to a couple of our favorites - the beautiful and wistful "My Eyes Adored You" and the always exquisite "Can't Take My Eyes Off You". Part of his musical theatre journey was to listen to and collect cast albums in foreign languages, so he also sang part of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" in another language for us. You haven't truly lived until you've been serenaded by JLY with this song in Italian. Talk about breathtaking...and it goes perfectly with both JLY's and Frankie Valli's Italian-American roots!
JLY also shared with us how much he admired and was influenced by Nell Carter, performing a stunning, emotional rendition of "Mean To Me" as a tribute, while also making it his own. This is another song that showcases his astounding vocal range, and I still hope that he will record it as well.
As JLY told us throughout the night, every Broadway career starts with a dream. And he finished the main part of the set with his deeply thoughtful "The Impossible Dream" from Man Of La Mancha, which stays with you long after the last note. He has proven that if you keep believing and reaching for your dreams, you can achieve them. And I hope he knows how much he truly inspires so many of us, in all areas of life and creativity, to do the same.
For the encore, JLY decided to have some fun with all of us as he made his way around the room for "One Last Kiss" (from Bye Bye Birdie), occasionally showing off some moves from tabletops as he collected those kisses from audience members. It's always a thrill when we get to interact during the show! Then we were up on our feet for "Sherry" and singing along, on a high from start to finish and beyond.
I have faith that even more dreams will come true for John Lloyd Young - and as we continue to travel all over the country and around the world for shows and fan banquets, we get to be a part of the magic. He is better than ever...and I'm so glad that we are on this journey with him!

Corinne Bailey Rae Debuts New York Transit Queen Ahead Of Black Rainbows Album
Tumblr media
Corinne Bailey Rae's thrashing "New York Transit Queen" is the first listen from her upcoming Black Rainbows album. The new music is inspired by Theaster Gates's collection at Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago. Black Rainbows has songs, a book, visuals and exhibitions. She explained her creative direction in a press release:
“I knew when I walked through those doors that my life had changed forever. Engaging with these archives and encountering Theaster Gates and his practice has changed how I think about myself as an artist and what the possibilities of my work can be. This music has come through seeing. Seeing has been like hearing, for me. While I was looking, songs/sounds appeared.”
Black Rainbows is described as coming from churches in Ethiopia, spellwork, and Black femininity. The album will be released on September 15th and Rae has plans to tour it in spaces such as New York's National Jazz Museum, Yale University's Schwarzman Center and University Of Chicago's Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. It was 2016 when Rae's last album The Heart Speaks In Whispers was released.  In 2022, she appeared on the Al Green: Soul Legend tribute album on a cover of "Take Your Time" with Anthony Hamilton. Stream "New York Transit Queen" and watch the video trailer.

Music
JAZZ
Tumblr media
THE JAZZ IS...
Jazz is a musical genre that developed from the traditions of West Africa, Europe, and North America. It is found particularly in New Orleans, Louisiana, the cradle of the musical style, where large numbers of colored slaves arrived, mainly from West Africa. That is why jazz was born from the union of three traditions: the native American, the African and the European.
The first African-American musical representations were a mixture of rhythms and instruments associated with slave life and thus interpreted as songs of work and collective pleasure. In these early moments, improvisation was already a big part of this music, which contrasted with the music composed by whites.
The first record on which the word jazz appeared was recorded by the Original Dixieland Band in January 1917 in New York. During that year, in addition, the term would become popular, which had already been in common use in the oral language from 1913 to 1915.
Louis Armstrong
Tumblr media
American jazz trumpeter, singer, and bandleader. In defining the artist, Duke Ellington was particularly on point when he said that if ever there was a Sir Sir, it would undoubtedly be Louis Armstrong. His musical career began in his hometown, where he played with various bands, until 1922, when Joe King Oliver inducted him into the Chicago Creole Jazz Band, where he married the band's pianist Lilian Hardin. . After performing in the Illinois state capital, Fletcher Henderson invited him to New York in 1924 to play with his big band and made recordings that showcased the musician's creativity and ingenuity. His virtuosity in improvisation had a great influence on jazz musicians in New York.
POP
Tumblr media
Popular music is the source of the musical genre known as pop music. His name, pop, is an abbreviation of the word popular, which in Spanish means "popular", and is derived from English.
In the mid-20th century, England is where pop music first emerged, borrowing elements from various current popular music genres. This makes it a very eclectic genre, as it incorporates elements of more modern African-American musical styles such as rap and hip hop, as well as rock and roll, dance, gospel, soul, and folk music.
The verse-chorus-verse structure of pop music lyrical compositions, the short duration of its songs, and its catchy rhythms and choruses are some of its essential elements.
ADELE
Tumblr media
The British artist published her album 30 last December and, since then, she has not stopped reaping successes. We were already used to the delicacy of Adele's music, to the sincere feeling that emanates from her lyrics. But in "30", the pop singer wanted to risk and show a much more vulnerable side by talking about her divorce.
ROCK AND ROLL
Tumblr media
The history and origin of rock and roll cannot be told without going through gospel, blues, R&B and country. Today in Musical Vinyl we explain to you how that music was created that they thought would never last.
The birth of rock was the result of the combination of multiple musical genres through several decades, mainly in the US and the UK. Music has always been a means of expression for each generation and rock and roll was no exception, with it a whole musical and social revolution was born.
The Rolling Stones
Tumblr media
Formed in 1962, the Rolling Stones have always been presented as the historical rivals of The Beatles. Within this comparison, the Stones represented the most aggressive current of rock music, even when they achieved stardom thanks to the song I wanna be your man, composed by the beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
FUNK
Tumblr media
Funk is a musical genre that was born between the mid and late 1960s, when mainly African-American musicians fused soul, jazz, Latin rhythms and R&B, giving rise to a new rhythmic and danceable musical form.
The Funk genre, heir to Rhythm'n Blues, spread in America from the '70s. Generally of moderate or slow speed, Funk rhythms are characterized by accents on sixteenth notes, which first influenced Blues, Rock and Jazz until entering Dance music and modern Hip Hop.
Mark Ronson
Tumblr media
British singer, songwriter and producer, Mark Ronson had to wait until his second album, "Version", to see his musical activity recognized.
Winner of a Brit award in 2015 and two Grammys in 2016, he has also produced for other artists, such as the singer Adele or the late Amy Winehouse, for whom he produced her album "Back to Black", for which he received several Grammys, including the one for best producer and the one for best recording, for the song "Rehab".
DANCE...
SALSA
Tumblr media
Although a specific point cannot be defined, it is known that it was in Cuba. It was during the 17th century, when the music of the Spanish and French colonists, and that of the African slaves, began to merge, giving rise to a curious mix of Afro-Caribbean musical styles that evolved to what we know today as dip. This fusion spread, with the passage of time, throughout Latin America and reached the United States at the end of the 1960s. There it began to gain popularity, especially in New York, where a large number of the Latino population that emigrated later accumulated. of the Second World War.
The origin of the salsa dance steps occurred a little later. The movements are also a fusion of African and European tradition. The steps, movements and figures typical of salsa are a clear reflection of many of the dances that African slaves brought to the Caribbean and of those that Europeans have danced in Cuba since the 1930s. In fact, the basic steps of salsa salsa are the same as those of the Cuban son. It also has similarities with the mambo, the rumba and the danzón, since they all draw on the same influences. But although they have common basic steps, each style is danced in a particular way, adapted to its own musical rhythm. These different variations depend on the region where each style has been developed.
WILLIE COLÓN
Tumblr media
American musician of Puerto Rican descent. Master of the trombone and of the fusion of different Caribbean, Afro-American and urban music rhythms, together with the vocalist Héctor Lavoe he formed one of the most relevant couples in Latin music of the seventies, and is considered one of the pioneers in the development of the authentic salsa movement in the late sixties and early seventies. Grandson of Puerto Rican emigrants, Willie Colón grew up in the Latino neighborhood of the Bronx, a fact that would mark a large part of his personal and artistic career, with what it implied of rebellion and transgression of established norms. After studying trumpet and clarinet, his admiration for Mon Rivera led him to opt for the trombone at the age of fourteen, and two years later, in 1966, he recorded his first album with the significant title of El Malo.
BALLET
Tumblr media
Ballet is a performing art that can include dance, orchestral music, choir, mime, acting, scenery, costumes, and fantastic stories. It all depends on who its creator is and the time in which it was created. Many call it classical dance. Others call it academic dance. The truth is that we all recognize a ballet by the precision of the refined movements of the dancers.
Agrippina Vagánova
Tumblr media
Important ballet teacher, founder of her own teaching method. Dancer, teacher and ballet director, Agrippina Vaganova is remembered as one of the best teachers in the history of classical dance. She laid the foundations for a new interpretive style that she coined under the name of the 'Vaganova Method'.
DISCO DANCE
Tumblr media
Disco music emerged as an underground movement around 1975. Afro-Americans, Latinos, Italians, the LGBT community and women were the promoters of a genre that emerged from the confluence of cultures. The disco dance is one of the most recognized dances of the 70s, both for the dance itself, and for its music. It has its origins in the late 60s and initially presents different musical arrangements, based on percussion and string arrangements.
BARRY WHITE
Tumblr media
Barry White was born on September 12, 1944 in Texas, into a poor family, but grew up in the black ghetto of the city of Los Angeles (a high-grade place on the margins of crime). During the sixties he recorded several albums under his real name and as a member of the "Upfronts", the "Atlantics" and the "Majestics". However, his greatest success came as a producer for artists like Felice Taylor and Viola Wills.
In 1969, Barry White created the trio Love Unlimited. This title would later be taken to name his accompanying group, the Love Unlimited Orchestra.
