NEW FOREIGN INVESTMENT WILL IMPROVE THE ECONOMY AND INCREASE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES: CH. SHAFAY HUSSAIN

LAHORE, May 03:

Provincial Minister for Industries and Commerce Chaudhry Shafay Hussain has said that there is trade cooperation between Pakistan and Korea, but effective measures are needed to increase bilateral economic cooperation. Former Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain played an active role in increasing trade cooperation between Pakistan and South Korea. He also received a diplomatic award for his outstanding services for the promotion of bilateral trade cooperation. He is also the Honorary Consul General of South Korea in Pakistan. Motorway is a major project of Korean government in Pakistan. Korea has also invested in Daewoo bus service and other sectors.

Provincial Minister for Industries and Commerce Chaudhry Shafay Hussain expressed these views while addressing Korea-Pakistan Business Forum 2024 as a special guest. The business forum held at Defense which was attended by Korean Ambassador Park Kajin, the business community of Pakistan and Korea. The business forum was organized by the Korean Embassy in Pakistan. The provincial minister said that new foreign investment will improve the economy and increase employment opportunities. Investments in Special Economic Zones of Punjab are exempted from income tax for 10 years while for the first time there is a facility to import duty free machinery. He said that 6 business facilitation centers have been established in major cities of Punjab. 5 more facilitation centers are planned. A new policy regarding industrial zones is being prepared. There have been beneficial discussions with China, UK and other foreign companies regarding manufacturing of solar panels in Pakistan. Work has also been started on shifting the industry to solar energy. The transition of the industry to solar energy will provide cheaper electricity to the industry.

The provincial minister said that the quality of technical education will be improved and the institutions will be adapted to international standards. Skilled manpower is in high demand in the global market. Punjab Government is focused on preparing skilled manpower as per the requirements of global market. Chief Minister Punjab Skill Development Program is also being launched. Information technology short courses will be provided free of cost to the youth. The syllabus of the courses is being aligned with the modern requirements. Korean language courses have been introduced in technical colleges of Punjab. Japanese, Arabic and German language courses will also be started.

Chaudhry Shafi Hussain said that effective measures are needed to increase economic and trade cooperation with Korea. Korea and Pakistan can play an important role in improving the environment. Korea should consider setting up an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Punjab. Pakistan has great potential in information technology sector, both countries can increase cooperation in this sector.

Addressing the forum, the Korean ambassador said that there is economic cooperation between Korea and Pakistan, but there is a need to increase bilateral trade cooperation. The speakers gave useful suggestions for increasing trade cooperation between Pakistan and Korea.

A coalition including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PLM-N) and the Pakistan People’s party (PPP) have agreed to form the next government of Pakistan, ensuring that the party of former prime minister Imran Khan will not take power despite getting the most votes in the election.

At a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday night, it was confirmed that the rival parties had agreed, with two smaller coalition partners, to form a joint government “to take Pakistan out of difficulty” and that PLM-N’s president, Shehbaz Sharif, would be their sole nominee for prime minister.

The announcement followed days of wrangling and political horse-trading after Pakistan’s election last week dramatically delivered the most votes – but not enough for a majority – to PTI, despite military opposition and a state-led crackdown.

Punjab machinations will extend political turmoil in Pakistan

The Supreme Court on Saturday summoned Punjab Assembly deputy speaker Dost Mazari and issued notice to chief minister Hamza Shahbaz in a petition filed by PML-Q.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's son Hamza Shehbaz on Saturday took oath as the chief minister of Punjab province. But the political turmoil in the country seems to be far from over. On Friday, Hamza was re-elected to the post by just three votes amid high drama when deputy speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari rejected 10 crucial votes of his rival candidate.

The run-off election for the Punjab chief minister was conducted in the Punjab Assembly in line with the instructions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Hamza was declared the winner in the election though his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party did not have a majority in the Assembly after key by-elections held on July 17.

Hamza managed to retain the post of Punjab province CM by the barest of margins after Mazari rejected 10 votes of his rival candidate Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s party Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), an ally of ousted prime minister Imran Khan Niazi's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing Article 63-A of the Constitution.

In a statement, Mazari said 10 lawmakers from the PML headed by Shujaat Hussain, a Khan ally, had violated regulations by voting contrary to demands from Hussain, who had allegedly asked they abstain from voting. Under Pakistani law, votes are disqualified if lawmakers vote contrary to their party’s instructions.

In the 368-member Punjab Assembly, Hamza’s party PML-N received 179 votes, while Elahi’s party garnered 176 votes.

Soon, "surprised" by Hamza's victory, Imran Khan called for protests on Friday night. "I am in shock at what happened in the Punjab Assembly. I always believe that God would take our democracy to a level where it is in the west,” he said.

"I am telling the nation today. You have to do a peaceful protest. Until and unless you do that, nothing will happen. Register your protest. You have to tell that we are humans, and not sheep. Register your protest today so that they know the Pakistani nation is alive," Khan said.

A massive protest erupted in Karachi's Shahrah-e-Faisal as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters took to the streets to demonstrate their frustration.

Meanwhile, PTI and PML-Q reached the Supreme Court registry in Lahore late at night and submitted a petition against the CM Punjab election.

On Saturday, the Supreme Court summoned Mazari. A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justices Ijazul Ahsan and Munib Akhtar, directed Mazari to submit the complete record of re-election to the court.

The bench also summoned attorney general for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf and advocate general of Punjab Shahzad Shaukat.

PML-N leader Khurram Dastagir Khan has tweeted a letter dated March 5 from Imran Khan which he had issued in his capacity as the "party head" ahead of the no-confidence vote against him in the National Assembly. The PML-Q and PTI are arguing that it is the Parliamentary party which has to decide on voting, and not the party head, while the PML-N's position is that it is the party head whose decision is final in the party. As per the election commission, Chaudhry Shujaat is PML-Q's president.
