For DADWC: "You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!" for anyone you like!
For @dadrunkwriting
Sorry, had to change the quote again for the story I wanted to go with:
CW: Body horror references, cannibalism references, Hawke is generally over shit
If she were being entirely honest, this ‘Morrigan’ person was by far Lyta Adaar’s least favorite temporary resident of Skyhold (or at least the woman had better be a temporary resident, her constant negging was starting to strain even Lyta’s patience).  Unfortunately, the Orlesians insisted she come and ‘help’ (although Lyta was starting to suspect that might have just been a way to get rid of her) so Lyta didn’t feel like she could kick her out of the castle.  At least yet.  She was just trying to ignore the woman as best she could.  Unfortunately, Morrigan had caught her while she was picking some herbs in the Skyhold garden and was currently talking at her.
“As I was saying, Inquisitor, if you’re ever interested in learning some more... uncommon uses for plants, I would happily assist.  I know some people in Skyhold,” Morrigan turned her head to glare at Cassia Hawke, who was minding her own business across the courtyard and appeared to be going over some maps with Cullen and Loghain Mac Tir, “fancy themselves ‘experts’ in it, however I can guarantee you no woefully mundane ex-Viscount knows as much as a properly trained mage.”
Lyta caught some movement out of the corner of her eye.  She looked up and saw that Hawke, Cullen, and Loghain had stopped looking at the maps.  Loghain was leaning away from the table slightly looking at Hawke, who was bent over it with enough tension in her frame that Lyta could see her shoulder blades pressed together through her leather armor.  For his part, Cullen was waiving frantically at Lyta, which was the movement she saw.  Once their eyes met, Cullen swiped one hand in front of his throat then pointed to an area across the garden where Lyta could just see Varric peaking over the wall that separated it from the walkway.
Morrigan didn’t seem to care that Lyta’s attention was elsewhere as she continued as though nothing had happened (although Lyta had a suspicion that even if Morrigan had noticed something happened, she wouldn’t care).  “I can guarantee you, Inquisitor, I am a very good friend to have.  Unlike some, I'm not going to be abandoned at Skyhold.  I have the talents to help you do great things, if you let me.”
“Lyta, get out of there!”  Lyta doubted anyone else heard Cullen’s whispered warning over the sound of Hawke slamming her palms on the table in front of her.
Lyta decided Cullen probably knew what he was talking about so as soon as Morrigan’s back was turned she got up and went to watch whatever bloodbath this was going to be with Varric.  Being a Qunari, she wouldn’t be able to hide as easily as he could, but it was better than being totally out in the open.
She made it to cover just in time to see Hawke round on Morrigan and stalk over with her head twisted slightly as she let out an eerily chipper chuckle and started in on the apostate, “Listen bitch, you may be talented at toadying up but it's kinda like widespread slaughter, one of those things that it's fundamentally impossible to be good at.”
Morrigan leaned away from Hawke in cool distain, “Well, you would be one to speak of widespread slaughter.”
Hawke snorted and shook her head, “Nice to see your perspective is actually as narrow as it seems.”
“To speak of narrow perspectives so.  You were so overwhelmed by the office of Viscount you and your elven bedwarmer wouldn't have to flee the Marches.”
Lyta wasn’t sure how, particularly given that Hawke wasn’t a mage, but she was positive the temperature in the courtyard dropped about twenty degrees to be a better match for Hawke’s icy tone and frozen eyes.  “First thing, if you want your fucking tongue to stay in one piece and where it is I'd better not hear you talking about Fenris that way again.  People really underestimate what a versatile cut of meat the tongue is and as you so astutely point out I am on the run.  Second thing, the rodents may be of unusual size in the fire swamp, but they're nowhere near as big as they are in Orlais.  Nor do they pretend to be anything else.”
Morrigan either didn’t notice or didn’t care about the force of Hawke’s ire, “Do make up your mind, am I a toad or a rodent?”
"And here I thought you needed to be witty to survive in the Game.  You're a fucking shape-shifter bitch!  You're every lowly parasitic pest anyone is ever forced to endure.  And seriously, any time you want to play one of my games, let me know.”  She ran her eyes over Morrigan appraisingly.  “Lots of other cuts of meat I can use.”
“I certainly hope you don’t think you’re impressing anyone with this display.”
“Aww, not all of us need to turn tricks to get permission to stay.”
“Well, maybe if you had you wouldn’t have been run out of every home you’ve ever known!”
“Given that you’re here, I don’t see that as being a recipe for success.”
“I hope you’re paying attention, Reaper.”  Lyta turned towards Varric at his whisper, “You just watched someone fall prey to one of the classic blunders.  The most well known of which is, of course, ‘Never get involved in a sea war against Qunari,’ but only slightly less well-known is ‘Never insult Elf if Jigsaw’s around to hear it.’  Actually, she just fell into two classic blunders, ‘Never poke at Jigsaw when she’s twitchy’ is I think fourth on the list.”
“I’ll... keep that in mind.”
Lyta glanced back at the verbal grudge match taking place in the courtyard.  Leliana had come down at some point and was, for some incomprehensible reason, trying to intervene.
“I think you should calm down, Champion,” Varric, Loghain, Cullen, and Lyta all winced at Leliana’s choice of words.  For her part Lyta had thought Leliana was smarter than that.  “Take some time, try to understand what Morrigan is saying.  There is no reason why we cannot all be friends.”
Hawke threw her head back and her hollow, empty laughter cut through the courtyard.  Lyta looked down to make sure it hadn’t somehow cut her.
“Oh, but there is every reason we can’t all be friends.  I don’t want to be her friend.”  Hawke snapped her gaze to Leliana.  “Or yours.  But neither of you have friends, do you?  It’s all tools, followers, worshippers, stepping-stones, accessories on your bloody path to power and glory.  Oh, but I forget; it’s okay for you to do it, because the maker wants you to, and with your perfect sense of right and wrong, you know exactly what the maker wants.”
Leliana straightened a bit, “You think you see so much, don’t you, Champion?  Well do you ever look at yourself?  See what you’ve done?  The suffering you’ve caused?  What do you see when you look at yourself?”
“So much more than you do.  But that’s a bit of a truism, isn’t it?  That light of righteousness you’re just smart enough to be terrified to step even a bit away from is just so blinding, isn’t it?”
Lyta turned to whisper to Varric, “Same classic blunder?”
“Same classic blunder, Reaper.”
Lyta pursed her lips, she wasn’t sure why, possibly because it was something to focus on that wasn’t what was going on in the courtyard, but she decided to finally ask Varric, “Why do you call me that anyway?  It doesn’t really fit you know.”
“Reaper, you’re a giant Qunari woman with a huge scythe, you look like a Reaper.  And maybe you should take a page from Jigsaw’s book and consider leaning into it more, you have to be just a bit intimidating, you’re the Inquisitor.  If I went around calling you something cute like ‘fawn’ nobody would take you seriously.  ‘Course maybe don’t lean into it quite as far as Jigsaw did.”
“If you want her to stop, why don’t you start calling her something cute like fawn?”
“Well, ‘fawn’ would never work for Jigsaw, but maybe...”  Varric stood and shouted at Hawke, “Say, Jigsaw?  What would you think about me calling you ‘Kitty’ instead?”
“...what?”  Hawke didn’t look enthusiastic about the idea.
“I... uh, never mind.  And I just remembered I’m on a deadline so I’ll see you later Jigsaw.”
“And that, Inquisitor,” Loghain had gathered up the maps and walked over to Lyta while she was distracted, “Would be an example of the third most famous classic blunder - do not draw attention to yourself if you’re around Cassia and she’s on-edge.”
Lyta looked up at the Warden in confusion, “She’s what, thirty five?  How are so many of these ‘classic’ blunders about her?”
“I’d suggest asking your advisors, but people who end up on the wrong end of Cassia don’t tend to enjoy re-living the experience.”
“Well then how many of the classic blunders are about her?” Lyta asked.
“Both more and fewer than you’d imagine.”
Cullen entered the conversation, “Here’s a question for you, Loghain - You couldn't have just left her in Gwaren?”
Loghain shook his head and muttered, “What is it with out-of-their-depths ex-Templars and that question...”  He continued at full volume, “I didn’t leave her in Gwaren for the same reason you didn’t want to leave her wherever she was.  There are a lot of people who are good, and she’s very good, but when it comes to ripping opponents to shreds there’s no one better.”

Villa Pamphili Hotel Rome Renewal

Location: Roma, Italy
Dexter Moren Associates unveils wellness-oriented approach at Villa Pamphili Hotel in Rome
After three years, an investment of over 25 million euros and a complete renovation, Villa Pamphili Hotel in Rome has reopened its doors on 1st July. Surrounded by a flourishing urban park in the Valle dei Casali, the interior redesign for Villa Pamphili was devised and delivered by international hospitality design expert Dexter Moren Associates’ (DMA) interiors team and positions the hotel as a reference point for an international clientele looking for the comfort of a resort just a few steps from the centre of Rome.
Villa Pamphili Hotel is owned by Antirion SGR through the Antirion Global Comparto Hotel fund, and is managed by Aries Group, a hotel management company specialising in the management of real estate assets with a tourist vocation.
The four-star hotel showcases more than 230 entirely redesigned rooms, offering a reinterpretation of the Italian style with a biophysical spatial approach, a swimming pool and a spa. The hotel also comprises an innovative 1600sq m conference centre, with 15 meeting rooms and a capacity of over 500 seats. To complete the offer, the hotel opens up to the city with its Terrazza Pamphili restaurant, located on the panoramic rooftop on the fifth floor of the structure.
DMA’s design for the scheme is inspired by the location and its villas, the local seventies architecture and the legendary Italian designer Gio Ponti. Lindsey Bean-Pearce, Partner, DMA Interiors, explains: “The concept for the hotel was directed by DMA’s ethos of developing a ‘neighbourhood story’ unique to the site – in this case, the location, the Mediterranean vibe and the existing seventies period architecture provided the inspiration for a ‘Miami beach’ feel.
This complemented the iconic Italian aesthetic; merging a city hotel (Urban) with a resort (Villa) to create a venue for local and international leisure and business guests to experience Rome’s abundant and multi-layered history while enjoying all the comforts of a wellness-oriented environment.” To create a strong connection with the outdoor landscape, DMA relocated the hotel’s existing bar to one end of the hotel’s ground floor, into a prominent location with a dedicated entrance, making the bar more accessible not only to guests but also to occasional visitors.
The warm peach ambience of the bar merges into a lobby lounge wrapping around to the terrace at the rear with views of the surrounding park. The rigidity of the existing travertine column grid is softened by the insertion of joinery pieces and benches to create cosy pockets of seating, while bookshelves help to screen the grand bold green staircase that leads to the lower ground restaurant.
Rich earthy terracotta shades, inspired by the local architecture and landscape, and timber finishes bring warmth and authenticity to the à la carte restaurant. The biophilic atmosphere of this F&B space is enhanced by the use of outdoor bistro chairs and planting to echo and connect to the rich foliage of the garden.
Bold stripes and contrasting Klein blue ceilings work together to ground the volumes of the main spaces, while handmade tiles frame the show kitchen where experienced chefs will complete the unique dining experience.
The standard guestrooms, influenced by the modern Italian design heritage, are composed of mint green and taupe colour blocking to the walls, punctuated by geometric painted artworks. The rectilinear lines of the slatted headboards contrast the curved joinery, itself topped with burgundy glass and accentuated with brass detailing, whilst bathrooms are transformed to provide a resort-style wellness experience.
The top floor suites are surrounded by balconies furnished with sun loungers and dining sets, enabling guests to enjoy the Mediterranean sunsets and the inspiring landscape. The space has been opened to make the most of the view through the floor-to-ceiling glazed windows, amplified by the use of full-height mirrors.
Unexpected geometric murals are the background of the bedroom spaces, utilising soft curved headboards and joinery to create a meandering journey. The curvilinear design sits in contrast with the diagonal stripes used in the bathrooms and walk-in closets, creating a harmonic balance of shapes and colours. These bathrooms feature walk-in showers and bath pods to allow the guests to enjoy views of the outdoors while inside. The pink tones of the textured tiles perfectly match the façade terracotta tones while timber framed vanities and shelving echo the biophilic context of the resort.
Ofer Arbib, CEO of Antirion SGR, comments: “The reopening of the Villa Pamphili Hotel is a particularly significant moment for our company, but also for the city of Rome, which will certainly see the return of a flow of international tourists in the second half of the year. We are proud of the result we have achieved thanks to the collaboration with highly professional and competent stakeholders, and we are also proud to undertake this new adventure with a manager like Aries – a reliable and experienced partner.”

This uniquely authentic castle is an architectural folly built in imitation of the Tower of London. The building resembles a fortification but it is "entirely useless from a defensive point of view", according to military architecture expert Stephen C. Spiteri. The fortified castle is called Zamittello Palace or Castello Zamittello. It is found on the outskirts of the country village of Mġarr, Malta, in Triq is-Santi, on the road leading to Ġnejna Bay. It has an interesting legend attached to it, was the scene of a brutal murder and to add to its ‘craziness’, not even the exact date of its construction is known for certain! 17TH OR 19TH CENTURY? While it would seem that Castello Zamittello was built in the 19th century by Baron Bernardo Zamitt, others sources suggest it could date much farther back in time than that, precisely to 1675, when it was constructed with the intent of guarding against sudden raids by corsairs. It would seem that the four unusual guard turrets adorning its corners had this specific defensive intention. A LEGEND ABOUT THE CASTLE A legend about Castello Zamittello goes that the only daughter of the owner, Baron Bernardo Zammit, was supposed to marry an old Count from Sicily. Lucia, wanting to become a nun, disappeared on her wedding day. After a year the bells of the church rang and in front of the altar a vision of Lucia dressed as a nun appeared to the villagers. She told them that on the wedding day she escaped to stop the marriage to the Count, took her vows as a nun and spent the last year taking care of the wounded, before being killed by an arrow. A BRUTAL MURDER - THIS TIME FOR REAL Count Francis Sant Cassia, 68, a cousin of the owner, was its last resident and was murdered in cold blood outside the premises on the 27th October 1988. Baron Sant Cassia died as a result of a single gunshot to his head. To date the case has not been solved. The family sold the castle a year later. PRESENT DAY USE Nowadays, the castle, set in lush gardens and surrounded by country scenes, is used for wedding receptions. (at Mgarr) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPR3DmoHCq-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Haere mai, statistical computing folks.
Later this year, Auckland is hosting the Asian regional meeting of the International Association for Statistical Computing.  For the benefit of conference-goers, here’s a brief introduction to the locale.
Nomenclature:
The Owen G. Glenn Building (OGGB, or building 260, in university abbreviations) is named after Owen G. Glenn. He’s a New Zealand businessman and philanthropist.
Auckland is named after George Eden.  The subantarctic Auckland Islands were not named after George but after his father William Eden.
New Zealand is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland; the lack of resemblance is quite striking.
Formally,(Actually It’s more complicated) the country is Aotearoa New Zealand, with Māori and English names of equal status. The city has a Māori name, Tāmaki Makaurau, but its primary name is the English one.
The Māori language (te reo Māori) is fairly easy to pronounce roughly right. The consonants are the same as in Western European languages (or pinyin), except that ‘wh’ is pronounced /f/. The vowels are pure, as in Spanish or German or Italian. The bars above vowels mean they are about twice as long. There isn’t strong stress on any syllable.
People over 30 who grew up in a place with a Māori name may well use an older, anglicised pronounciation for it, but there’s been a trend away from that. In particular, weather forecasts and airport announcements will typically use something relatively close to the Māori pronounciation.
Mountains
Auckland is full of little pointy hills that look like baby volcanoes. They are baby volcanoes. One of them, Maungawhau/Mt Eden is data(volcano) in R. Every few thousand years, a new one pops up at some unpredictable location in the Auckland area, erupts briefly, and then stops. There’s only a few of these volcano fields around the world — another is the (extinct) Boring Volcano Field in Portland, Oregon. The Auckland one is still active and so is less boring.
The most recent and largest volcano, Rangitoto, is just outside the Waitemata Harbour. There are ferry rides a few times a day, and it’s a nice walk to the top. Parts of Rangitoto are still bare rock, parts are pohutukawa forest, and there’s some areas on the south side that have developed proper soil and a variety of plants.
Auckland Domain, just across the motorway from the conference, is the crater of the closest volcano; Mt Eden is a short bus ride away.
Peoples
New Zealand was the last worthwhile land mass to be settled — about 800 years ago, by Polynesians in big ocean-going canoes. You occasionally see people raising alt-theories of earlier settlement by, eg, Celts, but there’s scientific consensus and fairly wide social endorsement for the view that these people are probably racist whackjobs.
The British arrived in increasing numbers in the early nineteenth century, with the usual consequences — though the Treaty of Waitangi was somewhat more successful than most attempts to negotiate with the British. Recently, the NZ government has settled treaty claims with many iwi (tribes, clans).
At the start of the twentieth century, about one in four residents of New Zealand was an immigrant. The proportion decreased to a minimum of about one in six in the 1940s and has been slowly increasing again. What’s different this time is where the immigrants are from: many are from the Pacific Islands and from Asia.  Auckland, in particular, has about 40%  immigrant proportion,  similar to New York and London. The increase in diversity has gone reasonably well by international standards, but there are certainly some people who aren’t happy with things being different from fifty years ago.
Plants
The trees with dense, gray-green leaves are pohutukawa. Some of them might be flowering by the time of the conference.  Stylised versions of the red spiky puffs of flowers are starting to displace winter-based symbols for Christmas in Auckland. You’ll probably hear people worrying about myrtle rust, a South American fungus that has recently arrived; no-one knows how much damage it will do.
Many of the conifers you see are native: rīmu, tōtara, kauri, kahikatea (native plants are typically known by their Māori names). The things like enormous fake Christmas trees are Araucarias; not native but regional — A. heterophylla, ‘Norfolk Pine’ from Norfolk Island and A. columnaris, ‘Cook Pine’, from New Caledonia.  There are also two conifers from the Monterey area of California: “radiata” (Pinus radiata) and “macrocarpa” (Cupressus macrocarpa). They grow much more vigorously here.
The Dr Seuss trees looking like bunches of grass on top of tall trunks are Cabbage Trees (Cordyline australis). The name comes from the edibility of the new stem and the roots, rather than their appearance.
Tree ferns are native; the Waitakere hills to the west of Auckland are packed full of them. They’re culturally important: the major women’s professional sports teams are named after them, and the unfolding fern frond (the ‘koru’) is a widely-used symbol of growth.
Kauri are massively huge living-fossil conifers that used to be common in Auckland and points north. Sadly, a lot of the nearby ones were turned into houses, and they grow slowly. Some of the ones on the west side of Northland (day-trip distance) are almost as big as redwoods (Sequoiadendron).
New Zealand Flax is known and loved and/or hated by gardeners around the warm temperate world. It was a traditional fibre source, and the nectar was used as a sweetener.  It’s not related to the `true’ flax of the northern hemisphere; it’s a lily.
Birds
New Zealand is famous for its weird native birds. The ones you see around you in Auckland mostly aren’t them.  You can easily see a lot of stupidly-introduced English birds: sparrow, starling, pigeon, blackbird, thrush, chaffinch, goldfinch. The cute urban parrots are Australian, as are the magpies and the tiny green silvereyes. The leggy blue and black pūkeko are ‘courtesy natives’ — they arrived before Europeans but after Māori — but they are the same species as the ones all over Europe and Asia. The large black gulls actually are a native species, but the differences would only matter to another gull.
You might, in the parks near the University, see the kererū, the big native pigeon. It’s about twice the size of the feral pigeons, and colored purple, green, and white.  There’s a few fantails (pīwakawaka) around, which are very cute.
There’s one common, distinctive, native bird. If you walk past a tree that sounds as if it’s full of old 28k dial-up modems, you have met the tūī. They’re about the size of a blackbird, with a puff of white feathers at the throat, and they’re boisterous, musical, and give the impression of being slightly drunk.
If you want to see more native birds, the day trip to Tiritiri Maitangi Island is highly recommended. You still won’t see kiwi (they are brown, shy, and nocturnal, so are essentially unobservable) but you will likely see saddlebacks and kākāriki and black robins and hihi and bellbirds and kēreru and maybe kōkako and takahē.
Death Rays from Space (update)
Auckland has a relatively mild climate, since it’s surrounded by water, but we’re the same distance from the equator as Las Vegas or the Greek islands.  There’s also less continental dust in the atmosphere here than a lot of places. It is surprisingly easy to get badly sunburned.
Foods
The best-value inexpensive food in central Auckland is in Asian restaurants, and particularly in Asian food courts. Non-foodcourt examples especially worth mentioning are Selera (Malaysian, in Newmarket) and Chom Na (Thai, downtown). Another inexpensive option is fish and chips, which is as good here as anywhere in the world: it’s worth paying extra for snapper if it’s fresh. A lot of pubs also have reasonable food.
The best Indian food is in Sandringham, about 6km south, but there are some good places at the top of the hill, along K Rd (Satya, in particular)
Mexican food is not recommended: it tends to be either bad or expensive. Pizza mostly isn’t great (with a few exceptions). Otherwise, any restaurant that can survive in Auckland is unlikely to be terrible.
At the higher priced end of the market, there are a number of good restaurants on Fort St. Ima does family-style Israeli food very well. Indochine Kitchen is Vietnamese, a bit noisy but good flavours.  Beirut is posh Lebanese. Cassia is modern Indian food and was the Restaurant of the Year last year. There are lots of well-regarded places in Ponsonby that I don’t know much about.
At the top: for high-end French-style food, The Grove is really excellent; I’ve heard good things about The French Café, but have never been there; Grand Harbour does Hong Kong-style seafood and is by acclaim the best Chinese restaurant in the country, but I’m not really qualified to judge whether it’s worth it. The revolving restaurant on the SkyTower is expensive because it revolves; unlike some revolving restaurants it does actually have good food.
Finally, Giapo, on Fort St, does absolutely over-the-top decorated locavore gelato. You have never seen anything like it.

Apple Via Del Corso Store Rome – Palazzo Marignoli
Architects: Foster + Partners
Address: Palazzo Marignoli, Via del Corso 181-188, Roma RM, Italy
Apple Via del Corso is the newest retail store, centrally located in the heart of Rome:
Apple Via Del Corso opens in the heart of historic Rome
Situated on Via del Corso, one of the most vibrant streets in Italy’s capital, Apple Via Del Corso brings the historic Palazzo Marignoli back to life. Inspired by its colorful past, the design reveals the building’s fascinating and multi-layered history by unveiling painted ceilings and frescoes from the 1890s juxtaposed with modern graffiti artworks from the 1950s. Celebrating the murals, hidden from view for decades, the new design creates a space where the city and history truly meet.
Apple Via del Corso centers around a lush courtyard brimming with native Camphora trees — the green heart of the palazzo and a remnant of the historic monastery Santa Maria Maddal:
The design is the result of a close collaboration between Apple’s design teams and the integrated engineering and design team at Foster + Partners. Stefan Behling, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “The joy of the project was to peel back and rediscover the layers of history throughout the building and revealing its eclectic past, which ranges from the historic painted ceilings and the frescoes by Fabio Cipolla, both from the 1890s, to the more recent graffiti artworks by Afro Basaldella. Palazzo Marignoli has seen so much throughout its history, and we feel truly privileged to be able to be part of its newest phase of life. Especially, as Rome is one of my favorite cities in the world.”
Once inside, visitors will find original detailing of locally sourced Carrara marble, including a monumental staircase dating back to 1888:
Located on the site of a 16th century convent ‘delle Convertite,’ Palazzo Marignoli was designed by renowned architect Salvatore Bianchi in 1870 for Filippo Marignoli. A second addition by the architect Giulio Podesti in the 19th century added the main façade we see today. From 1890 to 1955, it housed the famous Caffè Aragno, a fashionable meeting place for writers, journalists and political figures visiting from the neighboring parliament. On the ground floor two large ceiling paintings called “Dawn” and “Dusk” by Fabio Cipolla and Ettore Ballerini respectively, have been carefully restored and integrated within the new store. One of the most exciting finds were the multiple graffiti panels created by the artist, Afro Basaldella – a contemporary of Picasso and one of Italy’s most important artists – depicting urban scenes from Italian cities.
The teams were also able to revive and integrate Fabio Cipolla’s “Dawn” and Ettore Ballerini’s “Dusk,” two large ceiling paintings that date back to the early 1900s:
The façade towards Via del Corso has also been carefully restored, its large windows allowing views into the store and towards a beautiful internal courtyard. Entry to the store is through a historic passage that leads to the courtyard flanked by two generous and striking spaces that celebrate the grandeur of the historic palazzo. The arches and vaults of the central passage are lined with Carrara stone, carefully selected to match the existing marble and create dramatic vistas that lead you to the grand staircase. These spaces are an ideal setting for all customers to engage, explore and be inspired by Apple’s latest products and the artwork that surrounds them.
Adjacent to the Forum is a dedicated space for Apple Support and the Genius Bar, where a team of conservators have worked thousands of hours to restore the exquisite, geometrically patterned:
The courtyard is a remnant of the 16th century monastery and its garden, forming a peaceful green heart offering respite from the busy shopping street. It creates a calm focus for the entire building, visible from almost every corner of the store. The Camphora trees with their soft canopies offer dappled shade, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, and leafy vistas up to the lush courtyard terrace on the piano nobile. The historic lanterns that were found on the site have been carefully restored by local specialists using high-efficiency LEDs that mimic traditional candlelight.

The monumental staircase built originally by Marignoli to access his residence on the first floor leads you to the piano nobile, meticulously restored with its original Carrara marble detailing. The original skylight which was built over during a previous refurbishment has been restored to flood the space with artificial light that matches the tone of natural daylight. The first floor houses the Apple Forum within the vaulted former ballroom. The Apple Forum is the focus for Today at Apple that features workshops and events.
Large glass windows face Via del Corso, allowing natural light to stream into the interior:
The space adjacent to the grand ballroom – historically used as a games room – features an elaborate geometrically patterned, hand-painted ceiling, which was discovered during the course of construction. A dedicated team of conservators have worked thousands of hours to restore the ceiling to its former glory. Linking all these rooms is a gallery space that opens up onto a terrace. Inspired by historic Roman roof terraces, the space is filled with fragrant jasmine vines and olive trees, looking down onto the canopy of trees in the courtyard, offering another delightful place for visitors to unwind and relax. Apple Via del Corso is a celebration of the past and future and delicately articulates the different eras of history, creating a harmonious juxtaposition of old and new, and takes this building with so much history into its next phase of life.

Macdonnell Ranges-Serpentine Gorge
Hi there!
Heading west out of Alice Springs on Namatjira drive you are soon in the heart of the Macdonnell Ranges.  We went past places like, Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap, Ellery Creek Water Hole and then we pulled up at Serpentine Gorge.  All these places by the way are easily accessible from Alice Springs as Day trips, quite handy if you don’t want to camp out in the wilds!  The Macdonnell Ranges run for about 640 odd km’s east and west of Alice Springs.  Parallel ridges on either side of the valley are quite visible and in these ridges there are gaps which provide spectacular scenery and beautiful waterholes to cool of in the middle of summer.  The Ranges were green from recent rain which really made them standout amongst the surrounding landscape of red and ochre desert colours.  If you want to learn more about the Macdonnell ranges click HERE.
Serpentine Gorge was created by a south flowing creek which has cut through two ridges of Heavitree Quartzite leaving a spectacular gorge.  The road in is not too bad for a dirt road and once you get to the parking area it’s about a 1.5km walk in to the gorge across dry creek beds and scrubland.  If you’re lucky and are here after rain there are lots of wildflowers to see.  I was the one lagging behind taking photos of plants and flowers as the rest of the family steamed ahead to the heady heights of the gorge lookout.  Now if you want to see pictures of Serpentine Gorge in all its glory, I’m not going to show them right now!  You will need to scroll through this post to find them, cruel I know but well worth it!
Here is one of the dry creek beds, very rocky as you can see.
This is what a lot of the surrounding plant scape looks like, uninspiring you may say but you just need to look closely to find its beauty.
Larapinta trail marker, this walking trail is 223km in length across the Macdonnell ranges, click on this link, maybe one day!
If you’re walking too fast you will miss this little plant.  Brachyscome ciliaris also known as Variable Daisy is found in all states of Australia and usually in sand and gibber plains(extended plain with loose rocks).  Grows to about 45cm.  Brachyscome quite often seen in nurseries and gardens around the country even more exciting to find it out here!
Remember!  Don’t just look ahead, cast your eye’s down and to the sides of where you’re walking, you’ll never know what you will find or see next.
Above is a couple of more photos of this little gem.  Now, what about some Nightshade!  Solanum quadriloculatum.  That’s a mouthful, Wild Tomato sound better? Be very wary, this plants fruit are poisonous, another reason why common names are misleading.  This plant grows to 50 x 50cm near flooded watercourses and or low sand dunes.  It’s quite prickly and flowers in winter and spring.
Below is Senna artemisoides subsp. artemisoides, another mouthful but a very beautiful shrub which grows to about 1-2 metres with beautiful yellow buttercup flowers in winter and spring.
Maybe you can just call it the Silver Cassia.  Now for an Emu Bush.  Eremophila latrobei , commonly known as the Crimson Turkeybush, click HERE if you want to read more about this plant.  Quite beautiful!
Another stunning Emu bush is Eremophila longifolia , also known as Berrigan, tall shrub to small tree weeping in form, click HERE if you want to know more about the Berrigan.
Sorry, I got distracted with the plants in the Serpentine Gorge, lets move onto the scenery.  This is the first sort of glimpse of the gorge and it looks like its sort of straight up to the top, hmm!
Lets go for it!  Now we are starting the climb up and here you can clearly see the parallel ridge lines that run through the Macdonnell Ranges.
Another couple of views of those ridge lines
Yes, as you can see above we are getting higher, quite spectacular!  It is quite a rocky landscape and on these hillsides there is a lot of Porcupine grass, Trioda irritans.  The last past of its botanic name sums it up very well indeed, very irritating because it’s quite prickly.
Below are more views across the valley.
Another plant of interest for me to see in the wild was Dodonaea viscosa , the Broad leaf Hop Bush or just plain Hop Bush, very common in gardens around the country and useful for many things from hedging to specimen plantings.  It’s a very variable plant in the wild and widespread across the country.
Now I know photos are great but there’s just no comparison to actually being there and seeing this landscape.  I have a great digital SLR camera but it doesn’t capture the WOW! The size, scope and detail of what your eyes are looking at or what your feeling right then and there as you look at this amazing country.  Below is the Serpentine Gorge.
Where does one go now from these heights?  Down one would expect and lo and behold something I missed on the way up nearly hit me fair and square in the head on the way down.
Leaning over the rocky pathway was this intriguing large shrub with what looked like  stems twining around themselves like a climbing plant.  This is Pandorea doratoxylon also known as the Spearwood Vine.  The Aboriginal people use this plant for spears hence its common name. The long twining stems are light weight and are straightened and hardened over a fire.  The flowers are quite pretty when one comes upon them in such a tough landscape.
If they look familiar to you, you may be thinking of Pandorea jasminoides the Wonga Wonga vine or also known as the Bower Vine or one of the many hybrids available today.  You would be correct because they are in the same family Bignoniaceae.  Check out this closeup below!
This next photo doesn’t show too much, I just liked the detail of the bark.  To me it tells a story of the harsh landscape in which it resides.
These next photos show an interesting Grevillea, the Holly Leaf Grevillea, Grevillea wickhamii.  There are a few sub species but I’m not sure which one this is.  I have pictures of this flowering at a different location which will be revealed at a later date!
You can see above that the new growth gives the plant a tinge of yellow which from a distance look like flowers. Some more plants of interest here included another beautiful Emu Bush, Eremophila freelingii. The Rock Fuchsia Bush.
A characteristic of this plant is that it sheds its lower leaves during drought to conserve moisture, you can see that quite clearly in the above photo, the plant looks half dead but it’s not!  Grows to about 1.5 metres.  The lilac flowers are stunning and are produced after it rains.  Just a few more views below of this beautiful plant on the sides of Serpentine Gorge.
Funnily enough another surprise was what looked to be some type of Fern here as well and yes it was.  Not sure of its identity but quite possibly Cheilanthes brownie , The Northern Rock Fern, either way still remarkable to me to see a fern out here.  Nature is amazing.
Another interesting plant we saw was a parasite.  Lysiana exocarpi , the Harlequin Mistletoe.  This parasite is found mostly in inland locations and is very colourful.
Now we have made it back down and headed into the cool of the gorge, being winter it wasn’t hot out in the open so one could imagine how nice and cool it would be in the heat of summer.
In the above photo in the distance you can see some cycads, Macrozamia macdonnellii , the Macdonnell Ranges Cycad.  Here they are below as well.
Ah well!  That’s about it for the Serpentine Gorge, here’s a few last photos of plants and foliage.
Lets have some lunch, its been a great morning in the Macdonnell Ranges.  Serpentine Gorge has been a truly magical experience.
Finally a last look into the gorge.
Cheers!
A trip to the Northern Territory. Part 7. Macdonnell Ranges-Serpentine Gorge Hi there! Heading west out of Alice Springs on Namatjira drive you are soon in the heart of the Macdonnell Ranges.
