Fresco Vertumnus and Pomona, 1519/1521 Villa Medicea di Poggio, Caiano, Florence.

By Jacopo Carucci Pontormo 1494/1557,

Classic artistic theme of Roman mythology, representing according to Ovid's Metamorphoses the divinities Vertumnus the god of gardens madly in love with Pomona The fruit nymph who meet and fall in love.

Vertumnus the god of gardens has the appearance of Winter

Pomona The fruit nymph

The four figures in the left part of the fresco represent the personifications of the Four Seasons,

Vertume has the appearance of Winter, on the right is Autumn, the naked young man is Summer and the young boy is Spring

This figure can be interpreted as Verturmnus having regained his appearance as a young man

The muse of Auguste Rodin, Camille Claudel, 1864/1943 executed a plaster of the subject around 1886. But disappointed not to have a commission from the State, the group was not made in marble, thanks to the Countess de Maigret , only in 1905.

A bronze, cast by Eugène Blot, was presented the same year at the 1905 Autumn Salon, but titled "Abandonment"
