But from established writers. Writers such as Timothy Zahn, John Jackson Miller, Delilah S. Dawson, Jason Fry, Michael Kogge, Alexander Freed, James S. A. Corey, Jennifer Heddle, Jason Hough, Joe…

London's Hayward Gallery Can Get Away with Anything

London's Hayward Gallery Can Get Away with Anything
Tumblr media
Hidden in shadows of the Southbank, Hayward Gallery has long been pushing London’s artistic boundaries

Take a stroll along the Southbank Centre in London, past the Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre, and you couldn’t be blamed for missing the pocket of neon and concrete just above your head.
Opened in 1951, Hayward Gallery embraced its place in London’s lengthy net of festival sights. It might not be as high profile as the neighboring Tate Modern or the monumental Victoria & Albert Museum, but since its inception, it has aimed to draw on its “heritage as a festival site, with art and activities inside and outside.”
This means that what Hayward Gallery has to offer often breaks the boundaries of art and experience, making it a truly unmissable point for art-fiends from abroad.

Hayward’s “MIRRORCITY” exhibition invited artists to “address the challenges, conditions and consequences of living in a digital age” — Photo courtesy of Hayward Gallery
The Hayward has spent the last several decades curating exhibitions by some of Britain’s most thrilling enfant terribles: Tracy Emin, David Shrigley and Anthony Gormley have all represented their home team, so to speak, on the Hayward’s international arts landscape, while Andy Warhol, Ernesto Neto and Brigitte Kowanz have all wowed in their own mediums.
In early 2013, the gallery presented Light Show, an exploration of light as both tool and medium, which not only dazzled, but also set out to hack visitors’ optical faculties with pure blasts of colored light.
“Since the retina usually perceives a wide range of colors simultaneously,” artist Carlos Cruz-Diez explains of his installation, “experiencing these monochromatic situations causes disturbances. This activates and awakens notions of color in the viewer, who becomes aware of color’s material and physical existence.”

Exhibitions have included further invitations to experience art in its physical form (including a ball pit by Martin Creed and a newly announced pair of outdoor slides leading visitors down to ground level on the Southbank), giving Hayward Gallery its rather radical reputation. It’s truly the youngest sibling in London’s family of dazzling galleries – the one who’s able to get away with anything.
In the coming months, the gallery will continue to host Neha Chosky’s first solo exhibition in the UK, Minds to Lose, which examines the “tragicomic interventions in the life of plants, animals, even her own.”
Architectural studio Feilden Clegg Bradley is set to install 66 pyramids atop the roof of the Hayward, and Belgian artist Carsten Höller will go about installing those slides.
Be sure to book in advance for popular exhibitions, and leave time for tea and a cake in box office-level, Brutalist-chic cafe Concrete.

Foto (oben): TVNOW / Bernd-Michael Maurer

North America Airports Set Record for Passenger Satisfaction amid Surging Passenger Volumes and Ongoing Construction Projects, J.D. Power Finds
COSTA MESA, Calif. & TORONTO — North America airports have managed to shrug off the potentially disruptive effects of record passenger volumes and massive construction projects to achieve a record high in overall passenger satisfaction. According to the J.D. Power 2018 North America Airport Satisfaction Study,SM released today, across-the-board improvements in five factors: check-in; food, beverage and retail; accessibility; terminal facilities; and baggage claim helped drive overall passenger satisfaction to 761 (on a 1,000-point scale), 12 points higher than last year’s study.
“North America airports have been doing a tremendous job managing passenger volume, adding amenities, and keeping travellers moving despite some noteworthy challenges, but they will be put to the true test over the next few years,” said Michael Taylor, Travel Practice Lead at J.D. Power. “Several multi-billion-dollar airport construction projects—such as those in Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago—are reaching phases in which passenger disruption and increased traffic will be incredibly hard to avoid. How well these rapidly expanding airports manage throughout these infrastructure projects will provide valuable insight into what’s in store on a nationwide basis.”
Following are some of the key findings of the 2018 study:
Overall satisfaction reaches all-time high: Overall customer satisfaction scores reach an all-time high of 761, which is up 12 points from last year’s previous record high. Improvement is driven primarily by a 17-point increase in satisfaction with food, beverage and retail, and an 18-point increase in satisfaction with security check.
Better airport/TSA communication improves security check satisfaction: The 18-point increase in passenger satisfaction with the security check process is largely attributable to improved communication and cooperation between airport and TSA staff, with leading airports working closely with TSA to align security staffing levels with airport load factors.
Outsmarting human nature: The highest-scoring component of the airport experience is check-in/baggage check, which has been rising consistently since airports began implementing self-service kiosks and bag tagging. This removes the passenger frustration of waiting for someone else to facilitate a process, reduces lines and allows passengers to move at their own pace.
Airport Satisfaction Rankings
Las Vegas McCarran International Airport and Orlando International Airport rank highest, in a tie, in passenger satisfaction among mega airports, each with a score of 781. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (775) ranks third and Denver International Airport (771) ranks fourth.
John Wayne Airport, Orange County ranks highest among large airports, with a score of 815. Dallas Love Field (810) ranks second and Portland (Ore.) International Airport (804) ranks third.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport ranks highest among medium airports, with a score of 814. Indianapolis International Airport (811) ranks second and Fort Myers/Southwest Florida International (810) ranks third.
The 2018 North America Airport Satisfaction Study measures overall traveller satisfaction with mega, large, and medium North America airports by examining six factors (in order of importance): terminal facilities; airport accessibility; security check; baggage claim; check-in/baggage check; and food, beverage and retail.
Now in its 13th year, the study is based on responses from 40,183 North America travellers who travelled through at least one domestic airport and covers both departure and arrival experiences (including connecting airports) during the past three months. Travellers evaluated either a departing or arriving airport from their round-trip experience. The study was fielded from September 2017 through September 2018.

The Extreme Present at the Moore Building, Miami
December 2, 2019
Tumblr media
THE EXTREME PRESENT Presented by Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch Opening reception: Tuesday, December 3, 5–8pm December 4–8, 2019 Moore Building, 191 NE 40th Street, Miami __________ The odd thing about right now is that people are more connected than they’ve ever been before—except that they’ve been tricked into thinking they’re isolated. —The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present (2015) Gagosian is pleased to announce The Extreme Present, the fifth in a series of annual exhibitions at the Moore Building in the Miami Design District during Art Basel Miami Beach, presented by Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch. The Extreme Present will explore artists’ reactions to the conditions of our accelerating and increasingly complex world. The title is inspired by The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present, a book by Shumon Basar, Douglas Coupland, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, published in 2015. Their provocative thesis addresses the rapidly evolving digital era, half a century after Marshall McLuhan’s groundbreaking study on technology’s influence on culture, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, in which he coined the phrase “the medium is the message.” Works in this exhibition explore concepts of media, communication, togetherness, and isolation. Theaster Gates’s tar paintings, their manufacture prompted by his inheritance of his father’s tar kettle, unite the act of making a painting with the manual labor of making a roof. The abstract composition Torchdown (2014) conflates family history and memory with modern formalism. In Josh Kline’s Fox and Friends 3 (2019), “thin blue line” flags are wrapped around the casing of a television screen mounted to the wall, evoking the fractured, ideological nature of media. Chris Burden’s Gold Bullets (2003) comprises ten gold-plated bullets in a Plexiglas vitrine, their deadly and chaotic potential neutralized. Adam McEwen’s life-size Voting Booth (2017) is made entirely from machined graphite, suggesting a sketch, or the idea of the object, as well as the object itself. Taryn Simon’s ongoing photographic series Black Square (2006–) sets images of selected objects, documents, and people within a black field that has precisely the same measurements as Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 Suprematist work of the same name. Here, a Zimbabwean billion-dollar bill, a blackened palm from the California wildfires, and the pedestal that once supported a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee in New Orleans all assume new significance, suggesting the zero-sum game of humankind’s inventions and interventions. In Jeff Wall’s photograph Parent child (2018), a toddler’s uninhibited behavior is juxtaposed with background passersby caught in mid-stride, creating an eerie scene that evokes some of Wall’s persistent themes: self-absorption, or the failure to connect. Deana Lawson’s photograph House of My Deceased Lover (2019) depicts a nude woman sitting at the head of an unmade, threadbare bed; despite her ramshackle surroundings, Lawson’s subject is regal and impervious, with the radiant look of one of the religious icons on the wall behind her. Similarly, Sayre Gomez’s photorealist painting of a roadside, Lakeview Memento Mori (2019), shows the signage for a strip mall and the siding of a graffiti- and trash-strewn highway in the foreground, against a serene pink and gold-tinted sky. The Extreme Present offers a compact history of our time, told through artists’ contributions that are both political and personal. In conjunction with the exhibition, copies of Basar, Coupland, and Obrist’s book will be distributed free of charge to visitors. The Extreme Present includes works by Derrick Adams, Richard Artschwager, Andisheh Avini, Frank Benson, Lucas Blalock, Joe Bradley, Chris Burden, Julien Ceccaldi, Theresa Chromati, Douglas Coupland, Chelsea Culprit, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer, Gardar Eide Einarsson, David Ersser, Roe Ethridge, Urs Fischer, Nicholas Galanin, Theaster Gates, Isa Genzken, H. R. Giger, Samara Golden, Sayre Gomez, Douglas Gordon, Duane Hanson, Camille Henrot, Damien Hirst, Carsten Höller, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Josh Kline, Harmony Korine, Alicja Kwade, Deana Lawson, Austin Lee, Robert Longo, Goshka Macuga, Paul McCarthy, Adam McEwen, Cady Noland, Katja Novitskova, Albert Oehlen, Rudolf Polanszky, Tabor Robak, Sterling Ruby, Ed Ruscha, David Salle, Taryn Simon, Frances Stark, Diamond Stingily, Tavares Strachan, Moffat Takadiwa, Hank Willis Thomas, Kon Trubkovich, Daniel Turner, Andra Ursuta, Banks Violette, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol, and Anicka Yi. #TheExtremePresent
