The next morning Nick woke up at 6am. He saw that Catherine was still sleeping.
He tapped her lightly and said “Darling, I think we should wake up now and get going on our meditation and Arti. The car will pick us up at 9.”
She made the effort to sit up but was still sleepy.
She got out of bed and said “Give me a few minutes” and headed to the bathroom.
Nick sat down to meditate and closed his eyes. Catherine came out and sat next to him and started her meditation. Nick was the first to finish and went to shower. He finished and came out to see that Catherine had finished her meditation. He got dressed and ordered coffee and breakfast. He stepped on the balcony and lit a cigarette. It was a beautiful morning and it was pleasantly cool. He dragged on the cigarette and thought about how his life had slowly changed from being full of despair to being full of hope. He mentally thanked his Guru and stood there smoking.
Catherine came up behind him and held him softly. He held her hand and turned around. He kissed her forehead. They walked into the room and Catherine went to shower. Nick was about to sit down and there was a knock. He let the waiter in and tipped the waiter. He sat down to have some coffee. He was very relaxed and very in love. He could get used to this, he thought.
Catherine came out of the bathroom in a towel and started to get dressed. She joined him as he poured her some coffee. They finished breakfast and packed all their stuff and were ready to leave. He called the travel desk to ask if the car had come. It had. They called the reception and asked for the bellboy to be sent for their luggage. He came with a trolley and took their bags and they walked behind him.
Nick went to the reception and checked out and paid the bill. They walked to the car that was waiting and got in. He tipped the bellboy and they drove off. They would be in Goa in seven hours.
They drove for a few hours and stopped for lunch at a rest stop.
Nick ordered some vegetables, dal and chapatis.
They ate in silence and then Nick said “I have a college friend, Pia who lives in south Goa. She runs her own shop on Palolem beach. I am going to give her a call and let her know that we are going to be in Goa.”
“That will be good,” she said.
They finished lunch and went to the car.
Nick made a call to Pia and said “Hey Pia, Nick here. I am coming down to Goa with my girlfriend. We’re coming to Palolem. Is John’s place still open? Cool. Let me know.”
Catherine napped in the car while it went onwards to Goa. Nick closed his eyes and he too fell asleep.
They woke up an hour before Goa when Pia called and said “Nick, John’s place is full. Why don’t you guys come and stay with me?”
“That suits me fine. I hope it won’t be too much trouble for you” replied Nick.
“Not at all,” said Pia.
“Ok then, I will call you when I am there. Ok? Take care” said Nick and hung up.
Catherine was smiling and said “Are we staying with Pia?”
“Yes” Nick replied “she has a house in the village and has enough room for us.”
“Wonderful,” she said.
The car entered the Goa border and Nick told the driver to head to Palolem.
When they passed Canacona Nick called Pia and said “We’re passing Canacona. Give me directions to your place.”
He understood the directions and he instructed the driver along the way. They reached her house and it was lovely. They stopped outside her gate and unloaded their luggage and paid the driver.
Nick rang her doorbell and waited.
Pia opened the door and said “Nick you piece of shit, it took you five years to finally come to my place” and they hugged like long lost siblings.
Catherine stepped forward and Pia gave her a big hug and said “Welcome! I am Pia.” “
Hi Pia” replied Catherine. “I am Catherine.”
They went into the house and Pia took them to their room and they kept the luggage there. They went and sat in the living room. There was a long bookshelf that ran the length of the room.
“Pia is an avid reader,” said Nick to Catherine.
“I can see that,” replied Catherine.
“Pia was married to a German in another life” said Nick.
“Oh really?” exclaimed Catherine.
“That’s right “said Pia. “We’re still in touch,” she said.
“Will you have something to drink? Are you hungry?” asked Pia.
“Not really. But I will have something to drink” said Nick.
“Water for me” replied Catherine.
Pia went to the kitchen and got the drinks.
“How’s business?” asked Nick.
“Business is fine. It pays the bills. What more can one ask for?” Pia said and laughed.
“That’s true,” said Nick.
“So how did you two meet?” Pia asked.
“You remember my friend Zee? Well, Zee died after a night of partying and I got messed up real bad. I went and lived in an ashram near Bombay and was there for three months. It helped me heal and I met Catherine there just a few days ago. She has been a devotee for a long time. We took a trip together and have just come from Hampi” he said.
“Wow Nick. I am so sorry to hear about Zee. But it made you meet someone special. It is funny how things work. Everything connects to everything else” said Pia.
“That’s true,” said Catherine.
“Yup” said Nick.
Catherine excused herself to use the loo.
Nick and Pia chatted about common friends and were truly happy to see each other.
Pia said “Now if you will follow me into the kitchen please. I have to get dinner started.”
Nick followed her into the kitchen and she gave him onions to slice. She got busy blanching tomatoes and preparing her signature sauce.
Catherine came looking for them and said “Oh here you are.”
“I am helping Pia prepare dinner. She is a really good cook” said Nick.
“Can I help?” she asked.
“You could fry the onions when Nick is done” Pia said “and also slice garlic.”
They prepared the dinner like a well rehearsed team and the dinner was laid at the table. Pia had some bottles of wine from her trip to Italy.
She opened one and said “We don’t always have good wine, but this time it is an exceptionally good one.”
Nick poured the wine and Pia started serving the pasta, shrimp salad and fried chicken on everyone’s plates. They started eating and Catherine was blown away.
“What is in your secret sauce?” she asked.
“I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you,” joked Pia. “The secret is soaked Persian raisins,” she said, “very difficult to get.”
Catherine was happy to know her secret ingredient. They had the wine and it was sublime.
“This is turning out to be the best meal I’ve had this year,” said Catherine.
“For me too” chipped in Nick.
“Thank you guys, that means a lot” replied Pia.
They finished dinner and cleared the table.
Pia got the second bottle of wine out and said “Let’s do justice to this evening” she said.
They sat on the sofa and Nick got the glasses. Pia poured the wine and passed the glasses around. They enjoyed the wine and decided to call it a night as they were tired from the journey. It was 10pm.
The next morning Catherine woke up at 4am as was her routine at the ashram.
She nudged Nick and he said “What?”
“Time for meditation,” she said.
They meditated for an hour and Catherine got up first. Nick followed her and joined her for the morning Aarti.
They got dressed and went to the living room.
“Over here guys” they heard Pia from the garden.
They went out and saw that Pia was chilling on her lawn chair with a pot of coffee waiting for them.
“Good morning,” said Catherine.
“Good morning to you guys” replied Pia.
Nick poured two cups of coffee for them and sat down on the comfortable lawn chairs.
Catherine suddenly stood up.
“What happened?” asked Pia.
“There is a monkey watching us,” she said.
“Oh don’t worry about him. He is a regular visitor. You are safe” said Pia.
They drank their coffees and Pia passed the newspaper around.
“Just in case you lovebirds want to know what is happening out in the world” she said.
Catherine took the newspaper from Nick and glanced at the headlines for a minute.
She gave the paper back to Nick and said “Nothing worth reading about. Only tragedy after tragedy there.”
“So what would you like to do today?” Pia asked Catherine and Nick.
“Would you like to laze in for the morning while I make a trip to the shop and back? Then we could head out for lunch at one of the beach shacks.”
“That sounds like a good plan,” said Nick.
Catherine nodded.
They sat there drinking their coffees and just enjoyed being in the quiet of a village.
“You know Nick, you should write a book about your experiences. You have always had a flair for writing” said Pia.
“The astrologer said he would write a book and it would be liked by many. I too gave him a diary to record his inspirations” said Catherine.
“See the signs Nick” yelled Pia in his ear as she got up to go to her shop.
“Ok guys, rest and chill for a bit. I will be back by noon” said Pia and got on her scooter and rode away.
Nick and Catherine sat in the garden enjoying the moment. She reached out and touched his arm. He held her hand and they just sat there feeling like young lovers.
Pia was back at noon and Nick and Catherine had just finished some very important love making that had been getting much delayed because of travel fatigue. They came out and joined her.
“So guys are we ready for lunch?” she asked.
“Yup” Nick replied “How do we get there?
“On my scooter of course,” replied Pia.
“Triple seat?” asked Nick.
“Yup” said Pia “or we could call Anthony to drop us in his van.”
“Let’s get the van,” said Nick.
Pia called Anthony and he was there at the gate in ten minutes. He dropped them at Palolem beach and said he would be back when they called him.
They walked on the beach enjoying the sand and sea breeze. The beach was dotted with shacks and they wondered where to go.
Pia said “If you want to try authentic Goan food, I know just where to take you.”
“Lead on,” said Nick. They walked for a few minutes and came to a shack called Martin’s. They went in and got a table as it was still early. They sat and ordered beers and a seafood platter with some calamari fritters. This was a very chilled place and they were in a good mood. Goa had been a good choice thought Nick. The beer and snacks came and they got started on them. Catherine got a call on her phone and spoke in German. She spoke for about ten minutes and hung up.
She said “It was from my boss in Germany. The bank is making some changes and I have to go there for a week. Nick, you stay here at Pia’s and I will be back soon.”
“Okay. When do you plan to leave?” asked Nick.
She said “Tonight if I can get on the flight. Pia, do you have a travel agent? I need to book a round trip to Berlin and back with the return open.”
“Sure. I’ll get right on it” said Pia.
She took her phone and spoke with her travel agent and explained the booking requirement. She was told that there was a flight leaving tonight at 10pm.
Pia informed Catherine and she said “I’ll take it.”
They returned to their beers and lunch and spent the early afternoon chilling out and walking on the beach.
They called Anthony and he was there in ten minutes. They got into the van and went to Pia’s travel agent to make the payment and pick up the ticket.
They headed back to Pia’s where she packed a small bag and picked up her passport. It was 6pm. She had to report at the airport by 7pm.
Pia told Anthony to take Catherine and Nick to the airport and drop Catherine and bring Nick back.
The van took off with the three of them.
Pia stayed back and sat down on her lawn chair and just chilled out for a while. She went inside the house and opened a bottle of wine and poured it into her glass. She sipped at it as she played a Tina Turner DVD of her concert in Amsterdam. When the DVD ended, she went to the kitchen and checked out the food situation. There was some pasta and fried chicken from last night. She called for a pizza to add to that. It was just Nick and her tonight.
Nick got back at 8:30pm and was drained as hell. It was a long drive to the airport. Pia gave Nick a glass of wine and just let him relax. She picked up a magazine and continued sipping her wine.
Nick came up to her and said “Wanna have dinner? I am tired as hell and would like to crash early.”
“Sure” said Pia and they went to the kitchen and started heating the food.
They sat down at the table and ate without much conversation.
They cleared the table after finishing and Nick kissed her on her forehead and said “Goodnight. I will see you in the morning.”
“Goodnight” said Pia.
Nick went into his room and called Chandu to update him of the recent developments and then hit the bed without changing.
Pia took a book from her bookshelf and sat in her armchair to read it. She looked at the clock and it was not yet ten. She read till she felt sleepy and went to bed.

Nick woke up at 6am and went through his morning routine.
He went out and saw Pia sitting in the garden on her lawn-chair. He joined her and she poured a cup of coffee for him. It was just a nice morning and Nick was feeling alive. These had been good days, he thought.
“So what’s your plan for the day Nick?” Pia asked.
“I was planning to hit the beach and just hang out and get something to eat and come back. What are your plans” he asked.
“I am going to be at the shop till 1pm. I could meet you at the beach around then” she said.
“Cool. Can you give me a ride to the beach on your way to the shop?” he asked.
“Sure,” she replied.
They went into the house and had eggs and toast for breakfast with some more coffee. After clearing up they left for the beach on Pia’s scooter.
They got there and Nick said bye and stepped on to the beach and walked towards the sea. He dropped his shorts and t-shirt and went into the cold water. It took his breath away. There were many people at the beach and nobody bothered about anybody else any more. Everyone did his own thing. This would be a topic he could write about. He swam deeper. It took no time for him to realize that the current was getting stronger. He swam back and came ashore.
He went to one of the shacks and had a shot of feni. He thought it was a poor man’s tequila, but better tasting. He ordered another one.
He remembered his friend Kay saying “Never judge a man on vacation.”
He went and picked up a book from the bookshelf near the bar, Roman Empire – The Untold Story and took it to his table. He read it and got into it. It was 11am.
He ordered another shot of feni and continued being drawn into the book.
He had not realised the time when he got a call from Pia.
“Where are you?” she said. He looked at a sign on the wall and said “At Jack’s Shack.”
“Cool. See you there in a bit” she said and hung up.
It was a few minutes later that Pia showed up at the shack.
She saw the book on the table and said “Good. Getting into history I see.”
“Yes. History is fascinating” he said.
“It always is, unless it is getting made.”
“What are you having?” she asked.
“Feni shots,” he replied.
“Oh you’re gonna get hit so badly” she said.
She ordered a beer and some stuffed calamari. They sat there getting drunk when Nick thought he recognised someone on the other side of the shack.
He got up and walked ahead and said “Soulman! What the hell are you doing here? I thought you were in Canada.”
“I was, but I need to go to a rejuvenation facility for a while. Some things just got a hold of me in Canada” he said.
“Are you alone?” Nick asked.
“No. AJ is here with me” he said.
Nick said “Oh good. Where is he?”
“He has gone to buy some hash. He will be back shortly.”
“Come join us,” said Nick.
They went to Nick’s table and he said “Pia this is Soulman, my buddy from Bombay. Soulman, this is Pia, my old college buddy.”
“Hi” said Pia.
“Hi,” said Soulman.
“Soulman is a writer. We are all writers. It is just that we haven’t written anything. Hahahaha” said Nick.
“Actually Soulman has completed a historical fiction novel and has been shopping for a publisher.”
“That’s pretty cool. Do let us know when it is out. I would love to read it” said Pia.
“Sure,” he said.
“You know Nick, you are a lazy bastard. Get off your arse and write something. You think like a writer and it is all going to waste because you are too scared to start” said Soulman.
“I think I will. The whole universe is kicking my arse and I have to do it now.”
“Wonderful” said Pia and raised her beer to toast Soulman for kicking Nick’s arse.
AJ came in and found them and asked “What are we celebrating?”
“Hey AJ, good to see you bro” said Nick.
“Pia this is AJ, a damn good musician. AJ, this is Pia, my college buddy. Let’s order a round or two” said Nick.
Pia said “Ok guys, this is where I get off. Do you think you can make it home Nick?”
“Sure. They will get me home. They have done it before.” The feni had caught up with him.
“Please feed him something and no more feni for him” said Pia and left the shack.
Soulman asked AJ “Did you manage to score?”
“Ya” he replied and handed the stash to him.
Soulman discreetly rolled one and started smoking it. He passed it to AJ who took a few drags and passed it to Nick who was too drunk to remember that he did not smoke shit anymore. Nick took the joint from AJ and took a few deep drags and passed it to Soulman. Nick was blasted and totally out of it. AJ saw this and ordered some food and desserts. They had the meal and walked Nick out of the shack to their waiting taxi.
They drove around following Nick’s directions and after taking a few wrong turns they finally reached Pia’s house. They walked him to the door and rang the bell. Pia opened the door and led them to his bedroom where they put him to bed.
She thanked them and asked them to sit and said “He may still need supervision and updated them about Zee’s death and the breakdown that Nick had.”
“We didn’t know,” said Soulman.
“He has a wonderful woman in his life right now and this is going to trouble her.”
She asked them to stay for dinner so that a plan of action could be put into place. They had dinner and spoke at length about how to help Nick. They decided that Soulman would sit with Nick and they would write a story together. That would do him good and give him the confidence to explore it on his own.
They heard Nick’s phone ringing and Pia went and answered it. It was Catherine.
“Hi, this is Pia. Is everything okay with your work? Nick’s asleep. He was very tired from spending the day at the beach. He bumped into some old friends from Bombay and one of them is a writer and the other a musician. When are you coming back? Ok. I will tell him. Best of luck!” and she hung up.
AJ and Soulman took their leave and promised to visit the next day.
Pia wound things up and headed for her bedroom. She was afraid for Nick. It did not take much for the madness to come back in his life, even if it was unintentional. She turned the light off and went to sleep praying that it would turn out ok for Nick.
12
Nick woke up at noon. He had slept for fourteen hours. Pia came into his room and told him that Catherine had called while he was asleep. She had given her the message that she would be back in a week and had some great news to tell him when she was back.
“AJ and Soulman will be joining us for lunch today,” she said.
“Oh that is great.” He felt better just hearing these words.
Nick got out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. He told Pia that he was in two minds about sitting for meditation.
She said “It will clear up your head. Sit for half an hour at least.”
Nick went into the bathroom and took a shower and came out. He changed and sat for meditation. He closed his eyes and was immersed in it.
He came out and saw that AJ and Soulman had already arrived and they were sitting on the sofa drinking beers.
“Hey guys. I was so out of it yesterday. Thanks for bringing me back.”
“No sweat” said AJ.
“No problem man. We’ve all had those days” said Soulman.
“Wanna have a beer?” he asked.
“Nope, I don’t think I could handle it. I am going to stay low for a while.”
“Cool” said AJ.
“Nick, I have a story I want to tell. Would you be willing to collaborate with me on it?” asked Soulman.
“That would be super. I was always reluctant to do it on my own but this will be a good experience.”
“Cool. We should start it today after lunch” said Soulman.
“That’s great,” said Nick. “Catherine is away for a week so we can work on it. It will be a good surprise for her as well.”
Pia announced that lunch was ready and they all moved to the dining table. Pia had prepared a feast and they happily dove into it.
After lunch they helped Pia clear the table and Soulman put his laptop on it.
“This is a story of a misfit who travels in search of the love of his life. He is always one step behind her but he learns lessons along the way. These very lessons unite him with the love of his life” said Soulman. “What do you think?”
“Sounds familiar but good,” Nick replied.
Soulman started putting down what was on his mind. Whenever he got stumped, he took Nick’s opinion on it and they progressed.
They worked till late evening and Soulman said “We will resume tomorrow. I will be here by 11am” and left with AJ.
They worked every day and in a few days they had a short story that was a good starting point for a novel or a film script. Nick went through it and suggested changes.
While they had been working on it, AJ had been working on his tunes on his laptop.
He said “Hey guys take a break. Here is a taste of my next album.”
He connected his Bluetooth speaker and pressed play. Some very smooth electronica infused instrumental music started playing. They listened to the whole album which was the product of a month’s work and were very impressed.
“Just have to get into the studio to add some vocal textures and get it mixed.”
“This is incredible,” said Nick.
“Ya man, this is very good,” said Soulman.
Pia, who had just walked in from work had heard some of it and said “I want to hear it. Play it again.”
The whole album was played again.
Pia loved it and said “This is incredible music. You are extremely gifted.”
AJ enjoyed the compliments and said “Thanks guys.”
They took time out and sat in the garden and had coffee. They spent the evening unwinding and enjoyed the fresh air and open space.
Pia said “Nick, I have a surprise for you.”
“What is it?” Nick asked.
“Turn around,” she said.
Nick turned and he saw Catherine standing by the gate. He was taken by surprise. She was back early. He rushed to her and hugged her and lifted her up.
“What are you doing back so early? You had said a week.”
“I couldn’t stay without you. Missed you too much and realised that I had to be where you were. That is why I sold my apartment and have come to live in India.” she said.
“But what about your job?” he asked.
Catherine smiled the biggest smile and she said “The bank has been taken over by a much larger bank and they were giving early retirement to those who wanted it. I took the golden handshake they offered. I got 300,000 Euros for the time I put in at the bank. Plus what I got for my apartment. It should be enough to start a life here with you.”
“This is incredible,” he said.
He hugged her and kissed her and turned and said “She is back for good, guys!”
They walked back to the gang and Nick said “Guys, this is Catherine. Catherine, this is AJ and Soulman.”
“Nice to meet you” said the boys.
“Hope you had a good time with the boys,” said Catherine.
“Oh yes” said Nick.
“We just finished a short story together. It is a good feeling,” said Nick.
He was happy and at ease; and all he could think of was that she was back to be with him.
It was two weeks later that Nick and Catherine were hosting their reception at their newly purchased Riverside Villa. They had bought it from Pia’s parents who had kept it as a rental property for tourists for many years. It was a beautiful property along the river and was aptly named.
Pia had maintained it very well and they had got it at a good price. This would be the beginning of their life together.
Nick’s parents had come in from Jaipur and Catherine’s parents had come in from Germany.
There was Soulman and AJ there.
And there was the whole gang from Bombay Black Hotel, Chandu, Anu, Sandy, Gary, JJ, Shanti, Maya, Janis and Kartik. Sanju from the ashram had also made it.
They had all come in for the reception and Nick felt blessed for everyone in his life and felt thankful to them for having made it to their reception.
He could still not believe what his life had become; a life worth celebrating.
