What  Should You Know About Filing For Bankruptcy
What is a Personal Insolvency Agreement Australia?Personal Insolvency Agreements and Trustees  Acceptance of the AgreementConclusion
Finding your debts unmanageable? Facing foreclosure on your home and want to apply for bankruptcy as the last option. Bankruptcy has serious consequences that are worth considering before you make any decision especially for the people for whom bankruptcy is the only option. Well, let's start with What should you know about filing bankruptcy.
For Instance, depending upon the type of bankruptcy, bankruptcy will remain on your credit report for either seven or 10 years. Hence future, it makes it difficult to obtain a credit card, car loan, or mortgage in the future.  It can affect your ability to get a job or rent and also means higher insurance rates.
Know this Before Filing for Bankruptcy
For the people who are deep in debt and see no way to pay their bills, bankruptcy is generally considered as a last resort. There are many alternatives available before filing for bankruptcy that is worth exploring. They are likely to do less loss to your credit record and are less expensive than bankruptcy.
Creditors willing to negotiate is the best instance to quote. Some creditors will agree to accept reduced payments over a longer period rather than wait for a bankruptcy settlement and risk getting nothing at all.
Call your loan servicer to see what options may be available to you in the case of a home mortgage. Sometimes the option for forbearance, a loan modification may be offered by the lender.
How to File for Bankruptcy
Your first step should be to consult an attorney if you have decided to file for bankruptcy.
Seeking the advice of a qualified attorney is strongly recommended because bankruptcy has long-term financial and legal outcomes when it is possible to file without one. Most cases are handled by federal bankruptcy courts, bankruptcy is governed by federal law although some rules differ from state to state.
You will be required to attend a counseling session with a credit counseling organization approved by the Department of Justice’s U.S. Trustee Program before filing. The counselor should describe the alternatives to bankruptcy, and help you devise a budget plan and evaluate your financial situation.
If you cannot afford to pay to counsel is free but according to  Federal Trade Commission, it should cost about $50. Your attorney can advise you on which type of bankruptcy is more appropriate for your situation if you still wish to proceed.
Personal Insolvency Agreement Australia is an agreement between you and your creditors and is legally binding. For agreeing with your creditors there are flexible ways. You get the allowance to settle your debts without becoming bankrupt as they can help facilitate the arrangement of an agreement. Both the sum of money and the form of payment are decided by both parties. The offer may be a lump sum or a part payment of the debt.
A trustee is appointed in the personal insolvency agreement process. The trustee makes an offer to your creditors post taking control of your property. The trustee compares what the creditors would receive from a personal insolvency agreement in comparison to the person entering bankruptcy by making a report.
A meeting with the creditors needs to be organized within 25 days of the trustee's appointment. The agreement will be proposed to the creditors by the trustees at the meeting. The creditors will then be asked to vote on the agreement proposal and consider it. The majority of the creditors and 75% of the dollar value must vote yes to accept the proposal. This is also known as the special resolution.
The creditors must follow and comply with the terms of the agreement if it is accepted by the creditors. They must comply and follow the terms of the agreement. This is the point when creditors will select a trustee for them. All the terms of the agreement will be managed by this trustee. No doubt controlling trustee is the same as the trustee but the creditors can choose another trustee. Creditors can vote again by special resolution if they do not accept the agreement.
Hence, this was all that you need to know before filing bankruptcy. Insolvency Australia is also one of the best digital platforms that assists you well in finding the best insolvency practitioner for you. You can also search for an “insolvency practitioner near me” to get the best practitioner hired for the bankruptcy process.
Apply for bankruptcy today with the help of insolvency Australia. Also, find another option you can avail yourself of other than bankruptcy to preserve your credit value.

How ‘green’ are electric cars?
With the ban of new petrol and diesel cars in place in the UK by 2030, sales of electric cars are expected to surge. Plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles accounted for more than 1 in 10 vehicle registrations in 2020, up from 1 in 30 in 2019, according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2030, 125 million electric vehicles will be owned around the world and the UK government aims for almost every car and van on the road to be zero emission by 2050.
But just how green are they?
Electric cars are undoubtedly cleaner than fossil fuel run cars. Although more energy is required to make electric vehicles than petrol, you still save more energy in the long run. The deficit is paid off quickly and even, when with no alternative, the electricity used to charge the vehicles is driven by fossil fuels, they are still greener.
However, it is important to address the huge implications for our natural resources not only to produce green technologies like electric cars, but to keep them charged.
Challenges
For every car on our roads to be zero emission by 2050, just under double the current total annual world cobalt production, 75% of the world’s lithium production and at least 50% of the world’s copper production would be required.
Currently, electric cars rely on lithium and cobalt batteries to run, which, whilst undoubtedly better for the environment than carbon, aren’t entirely clean.
Cobalt mining
Cobalt is a key ingredient in the lithium-ion batteries that power electric cars, because it enables the energy density required in batteries intended to last for hundreds of miles per charge.
However, the mining of cobalt is fraught with political issues. 60% of cobalt comes from the Dominican Republic of Congo where children as young as 7 years old are mining it. The mining process also causes terrible pollution in local rivers.
Lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars and other consumer electronics account for about half of all cobalt demand, and the demand for these batteries is projected to more than quadruple over the next decade.
Lithium mining
Lithium is currently produced far from the UK — In 2019, Australia was responsible for more than half of global lithium supply, with the bulk of the rest supplied by Chile, China and Argentina. Lithium deposits are also located near some of the most sensitive ecosystems in the world – The Amur River, on the border of Russia and China, the Andes Mountains (Chile) and the Salt Flats in Bolivia. Deforestation, water shortages and toxic leaks are unfortunately a devastating consequence of lithium mining. Lithium extraction in salt flats in Bolivia uses millions of litres of water. The Sales de Jujuy plant produced 14,000 tonnes of lithium in 2018, using up to 420 million litres of water – the equivalent of 168 olympic sized pools.
Prof. Richard Herrington, Head of Earth Sciences Department, Natural History Museum said: “Society needs to understand that there is a raw material cost of going green and that both new research and investment is urgently needed for us to evaluate new ways to source these. This may include potentially considering sources much closer to where the metals are to be used.”
Recycling
Research in Australia found that only 2% of the country’s 3,300 tonnes of lithium-ion waste was recycled. Because lithium cathodes degrade over time, they can’t simply be placed into new batteries. “That’s the problem with recycling any form of battery that has electrochemistry – you don’t know what point it is at in its life,” says Stephen Voller, CEO and founder of ZapGo. “That’s why recycling most mobile phones is not cost effective. You get this sort of soup.”
At present, there are low volumes of electric-vehicle batteries that require recycling. As these volumes increase dramatically, there are questions concerning the economies (and diseconomies) of scale in relation to recycling operations.
Charging inefficiency
One of the biggest challenges, not just for the UK, but around the world is the installation of charging points. We need more, faster, more reliable charge points for people to be persuaded to take the plunge and purchase electric. Cars also need to be charged at smart times of day to avoid unnecessary costs for energy networks (and ultimately the consumers who pay for them).
Solutions
Sourcing locally
Luckily, lithium is relatively abundant, and could in theory be generated from seawater across the globe in the future.
In Britain, there are exciting developments in the lithium industry. Researchers working on ways to source lithium, a critical component of the batteries used in electric vehicles, have produced a chemical known as lithium carbonate from rocks found in Cornwall and Scotland.
Cornwall has a world-class mineral quality, which has stood idle for decades. The battery revolution provides the opportunity to explore raw materials which are vital to modern technologies such as electric cars. Cornish Lithium believes that the extraction of lithium has the potential to rejuvenate the economy of Cornwall and to provide much needed high value employment.
While the UK may not be a global player, to be able to produce what it needs would place it at a serious advantage over non-lithium- producing countries. It’s an exciting step forward which sets Britain on a good course to create its own EV supply chain in the next five years, which is especially important since the UK left the European Union.
Under the terms of the new free trade agreement with the EU, for goods sold in the EU to qualify as tariff free they must have components produced under localised sourcing. UK-based car makers need to have developed their own local battery supply chain by 2026 in order to avoid these charges.
Alternative resources
As mentioned above, resources like Cobalt aren’t infinite, and the environmental issues associated are prominent. We ideally need to shift to batteries that use less cobalt, or none at all. Elon Musk’s car firm Tesla will make electric vehicle batteries with cobalt-free cathodes, it announced during its Battery Day event in Autumn last year, but there is no set timeline on this yet.
For short-range cars made and sold in China, Reuters says Tesla will instead use lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are much cheaper and don’t have the same environmental problems as those needing cobalt. The disadvantage is that these batteries tend to have a lower energy density, reducing how far a car can drive without needing to charge.
Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries are already widely used by other Chinese firms, including BYD, the world’s biggest electric car manufacturer. If other electric car manufacturers follow internationally, we may be able to reduce our dependency on a dwindling mineral resource.
Recycling research
At the University of Birmingham, research funded by the government’s £246m Faraday Challenge for battery research is trying to find new ways of recycling lithium-ion. Researchers, led by the Birmingham Energy Institute are using robotics technology developed for nuclear power plants to find ways to safely remove and dismantle potentially explosive lithium-ion cells from electric vehicles.
A number of improvements could make the recycling processes economically more efficient, such as better sorting technologies, a method for separating electrode materials, greater process flexibility, design for recycling, and greater manufacturer standardization of batteries.
Battery swap shops
China, with electric vehicle sales of more than one million a year, is demonstrating how the charging issues can be addressed with battery ‘swap shops’ in which owners can drive into forecourts and swap batteries quickly. NIO, the Shanghai-based car manufacturer, claims a three-minute swap time at these stations.
This also addresses the high cost of EVs currently. By using the swap concept, the battery could be rented, with part of the swap cost being a fee for rental. This could reduce the purchase cost and incentivise more people to purchase electric. The swap batteries could also be charged using surplus renewable electricity, which is a real plus for the environment.
Electric alternatives
It’s the electric vehicles that have taken off in the world of green automotives. However, there is another player in the field – hydrogen. Hydrogen cars are powered by a chemical reaction. Hydrogen enters the fuel cell from a tank and mixes with oxygen to create H2O, which generates electricity that is used to power the motors that drive the wheels.
Hydrogen tanks are refuelled in a process that’s pretty much the same as with a petrol or diesel car. You could fill your car up just like fossil fuel, but instead of greenhouse gases being emitted, the exhaust would just be pure water vapour. Compared to waiting around for an EV’s battery to recharge, hydrogen appeared to be the much more convenient option.
The challenge is that hydrogen is very energy intensive to create as converting the electricity to hydrogen via electrolysis is only 75% efficient. Then the gas has to be compressed, chilled and transported, which loses another 10%. The fuel cell process of converting hydrogen back to electricity is only 60% efficient, after which you have the same 5% loss from driving the vehicle motor as for a BEV. The grand total is a 62% loss in energy – more than three times as much as an electric car.
Nevertheless, hydrogen still has niches where its main strengths – lightness and quick refuelling – give it a clear advantage. While you can fit your personal driving lifestyle around strategic battery charging stops, this is not ideal for commercial vehicles such as trains that need to run for very long periods and distances with only short waits to refuel. The weight of batteries for eight hours of continual usage would also be prohibitive for these vehicles. Therefore, hydrogen could be a viable option, despite the inefficiency.

Auckland Travel Guide: Things to Do and See
Tumblr media
Auckland is the biggest city of New Zealand and the city is located the northern island of the country. Auckland has more than 1.6 million residents based on 2018 census. This unique city is one of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities in the world and also the home of the largest Polynesian population.
Meet with the Auckland
Auckland is no more different than any other major cities in the world. It has skyscrapers, nice and cool beaches, shopping areas and many more. The famous city of New Zealand only has one bad thing probably for you, it is a little far away :) The city is located on the eastern of Australia which makes it little hard to reach there. You must take a long flight if you're planning to come here from Europe or America but be sure it will worth it. As you know New Zealand consists of two big major islands. Auckland is on the top of the North Island, yes it's called North Island. The city lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Hauraki Gulf. It also has hills covered with rainforest and also dozens of dormant volcanic cones. Imagine a city with both natural beauties and modern life. Yes, it is Auckland.
Brief History of Auckland
We can divide the Aucklands history into the two-part, early and modern. Based on the historical recording city is first settled by the Maori's around 1350 which makes the city quite young than the world other major cities. Before the arrival of colonist Europeans to the area its thought that the population of the Maori were around 20.000. After the arrival of the Europeans, local tribes met with new technology such as guns! That leads to the catastrophic tribal wats in 1807. In the following years, tribes without weapons moved to the coastal sides. On 27 January 1832, Josep Brooks Weller bought the land including the current area of Auckland on the North Sohre of the North Island. A few years later the local tribes began to accept the British protection and sought to both church and the crown. As you expected when everything settled down area started to grow rapidly. On 18 September 1840, Auckland officially declared the capital of New Zealand. There are also a few more event in the early history of the city but I won't get into them. Let's continue with the modern times.
Tumblr media
Queen Street (c.1889); painting by Jacques Carabain. Most of the buildings depicted were demolished during rampant modernization in the 1970s (Source). With the help of the trams and railway Auckland rapidly expanded during the early first half of the 20th century. Also, transport is the city dominated by motor vehicles after WWII. As you know cities geography is little mountainous. This directly affected the cities settlement. Areas divided based on suitable places for the roads and avenues. It is not always possible to construct urban areas over the mountains and hills. The North Shore and the Manukau City are the main urban areas of Auckland. The city is not the capital of the country but everyone knows that Auckland is the first. Because the city brings more than 75 percent of tourist every year and 30 percent of the container trade. These numbers make the city crucially important for New Zealand. The city began to change after the changing over the immigration policy of the country. When the government allowed immigrant from Asia to come and live in the city in 1986. In 20 years, the population of the Asians increased from %1 to %18 and more and more. When you're walking in the street of the city you absolutely feel this multicultural lifestyle and its beauties.

Auckland Airport
As you expected Auckland Airport is the busiest and largest airport in the country. Yearly more than 21 millions of passenger use this airport. Auckland Airport near the Mangere which is a residential settlement area. You have several options to come and get from the airport. SkyBus is the largest bus network in the region which operates 7/24. You can take Auckland City Express which goes through the Mt. Eden and Dominion Road. Your trip probably takes 40-60 min but expect longer trips especially the rush hours. Also, there is a North Harbour Express and it operates between 04.00-21.00 (North Harbour to Airport) and 06.00-22.00 (Airport to North Harbour). This express line stops at Akoranga, Smales Farm and Westfield Albany. Your journey will take around 40-80 and more during the rush hour. For these lines, you can buy your ticket online from this website. Ticket can be bought also from the kiosk at the airport and SkyBus City Lounge on 396 Queen Street. Ticket prices varying between 18 to 44 $ for one adult based online. You also have other options to reach or leave from Auckland Airport. Bus line 380 Airport operates almost every 15 minutes a whole year with no exception. 380 Airport stops at the outside of the both domestic and international terminals at the Auckland Airport. 380 Airport line operates between Onehunga, Mangere Town Centre and Manukau via Papatoetoe and Onehunga Train Stations. There also Route 31 Bus line for you. This one is less frequent than the other and has a different route. Route 31 operates 15 minutes frequency between 07.00-19.00 and 30 minutes other hours. Route 31 bus travels between Botany Town Centre and Mangere Town Centre via the Papatoetoe Train Station. The line also runs via Otara Interchange (MIT campus), Hunters Corner and Papatoetoe Train Station (on Shirley Rd opposite the station). Unfortunately, there is no train or tram line at the airport. You should take a bus the reach the closest train station, Papatoetoe. Of course, you can take a taxi or rent a car. Auckland Airport Website
Public Transport in Auckland
Train, buses and ferries... It's quite easy and cheap to use public transport in Auckland. This well-connected and built transport allows you to explore almost everywhere in the city and give you more freedom. At first, you should know the Britomart where is the hearth of the public transport of Auckland. Britomart is the main transport hub for buses and trains. In your case, we would have checked the dampers and, if necessary, had them replaced (the repair would have taken a maximum of 1 hour). We ask all direct customers for feedback and to date over 1,000 out of 1,100 completed surveys have given a “very good” to “good”. Maui
To book a Maui vehicle there is also a practical tablet with GPS and travel tips! Technically, you are always well taken care of on site with the nationwide customer service. Ace Camper has only one station in Rotorua (North Island), but allows pick-up and drop-off at any location on the North Island (also in Wellington, where there are hardly any camper providers), which is very practical. Due to the relatively small fleet, the vehicles are always in top condition and also when it comes to service, some large rental companies can still take a look at Ace Camper. Our 2 Berth Campervan had its best times long behind. Due to the closed shock absorbers, every blow was passed on directly to the body and back of the occupants, which led to the first windshield breakage after 4 days. When the vehicles are handed over, attention is drawn to the penalties, which have to be paid if you lose equipment. For example, $ 50 for a self-copied booklet on vehicle equipment. Here you can read my personal experiences about the New Zealand campers. We have had the best experience with premium insurance coverage ourselves and also advise you to add roll-over protection in New Zealand. This is the protection in the event of damage to prevent the camper from tipping over, which would result in total damage. In New Zealand it is sometimes really stormy and I find it comforting to have this protection. If you are looking for a rental car instead, you will also find a worldwide rental car offer. I can only confirm Sascha Warnken, we have always been very satisfied with 4 trips with turning circles so far, there have never been any technical problems with the somewhat older cars or any discrepancies in acceptance and return! Maybe it will help in the future to just talk to each other and not "complain" afterwards. In any case, we always drove well with the price-performance ratio and the general conditions of the rental and will book again with WK in 2017. New Zealand, the land of kiwis and Maoris, is perfect for a trip in a motorhome. If you are looking for a young and high quality vehicle, MAUI is certainly the new zealand motorhome real landlords! MAUI is a brand of the THL Group, which also includes the BRITZ and MIGHTY brands.

5 Facts About Transportation and Traffic in Manila
Are you scared of the horrible Manila traffic? Let's set things straight. Whether you're staying for a few days or transiting to another flight, you should be aware.
What should you know about Manila traffic? Here are 5 Facts about transportation and traffic in Manila to help you plan your trip.
2nd Worst Traffic in the World (2019)
Metro Manila is infamous for its gridlocked roads, but how does it fair around the world? The TomTom traffic index measures urban congestion of over 416 cities across 57 countries using a standardized congestion percentage.
When a country is ranked with 20% congestion, it means you have an additional 20% time to complete a 30-minute ride. An amount above 50% means the city is heavily congested.
According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2019, Metro Manila has the 2nd worst traffic in the world, only second to Bengaluru, India. It has average congestion of 71%. But this goes worse during rush hours.
It's Either Traffic or Super Traffic
In the TomTom Traffic Report, traffic in Manila (Monday to Friday) starts at around 6 AM with 65% to 73% congestion, peaks at 89% to 99% at 8 AM. Congestion from 9 AM to 2 PM hovers at around 69% to 99%.
If you think that's awful, wait until you travel during the night rush hour. It starts at around 3 PM with 69% to 105% congestion and peaks at 6 PM with 112% to 143% congestion. Congestion after 6PM averages around 69% to 123% until 10 PM.
It's no surprise that an average commute would go around 1 hour 30 mins PER WAY. Yes, it's like a flight to another country already.
If you think there are windows of time when Manila isn't traffic, well prepare to wake up during ungodly hours. There is relatively low congestion after 10 PM until 5 AM the next day.
Rain and High-Profile Events Intensifies Traffic Further
The data above shows a "normal day." So, how does it look like during "special events"? If it's raining hard, a high-profile event happens, or a concert is held from someone famous, prepare to be shocked in the wrong way.
Just check out the ASEAN summit held a few years ago. Roads are transformed into parking lots with a turtle-like movement.
And it's similar during concerts. In my personal experience, a 45-minute commute from the edge of EDSA became 6 hours because of a high-profile show. I'm looking at you, Britney Spears.
It was such a traumatic moment. As much as possible, I vowed not to commute during big concerts. That could've been 75% of the flight to Australia.
Public Transportation is Inefficient
If you want to feel like sardines packed in a tin can, try out Manila's public transportation, especially during the rush hour. There are lines far beyond your wildest dreams. Literally.
Just look at this article showing people lining an hour or more just to alight the train. And the cramped space doesn't help. To make matters worse, train malfunctions are quite frequent.
As to buses, the queues are really long as well with operators populating the buses to over maximum capacity. Imagine people standing at the bus corridor fully-packed, again, like a can of sardines. And don't get me started with security dangers from thieves.
And regular taxis are no better. Taxis are notorious for being unethical in the Philippines.
Most are infamous for being choosy to your drop off location. Taxis even overcharge, especially if you're a foreigner riding from NAIA.
Public transportation is inefficient. And as much as you want to immerse yourself in a country's culture, I feel you don't need to suffer and immerse in this aspect.
There are Convenient Transportation Options
With your stay in Manila, there are still convenient ways to go around. It might not be the cheapest, but it can save you the hassle from all the horrors above. Here are some you might want to consider.
P2P Buses
Point-to-point or P2P Buses is a convenient transportation option spearheaded by the Department of Transportation. The difference between regular buses is that P2P buses travel just from one point to another. It doesn't stop in between, which causes a lot of delays in your travel time.
Also, they just accommodate passengers up to standard capacity, and the interior is maintained well. You can enjoy it with prices at around 100 PHP or $2 only. Check the schedules and routes here.
Anis Transport Car Rental
Instead of riding a regular taxi, the better option is through Anis Transport. With Anis Transport, you can book your rides and know how much to pay beforehand.
Also, they are not picky with your destination, and they don't demand unsolicited tips. But in general, it's a good option when you go around Manila.
Van Rentals
If you need to go to many places or want to be secured with your airport transfers, why not get a van rental?
With this, you are sure that someone will pick you up on your arrival regardless if its rush hour. If you want to stop by a particular place first before you go to your final stop, it's possible. It's like having your own private chauffeur who can do your bidding.
Also, security is better. You don't share your ride with anyone else. And the drivers can wade around the crazy roads of Metro Manila. (If you tried driving in Manila, you would understand.)
You can get a quotation as fast as 24 hours before your arrival. Check the rates here.
Conclusion
Traveling in the Philippines doesn't have to be a nightmare. For just a relatively small amount, you can choose the more convenient travel options so that you are left to enjoy what matters most - relaxing your mind and enjoying what the city can offer.

How to Spend One Year on a Working Holiday Visa in Australia
Almost nine million people visit Australia each year to scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef, trek to waterfalls in Kakadu National Park, visit the Sydney Opera House, surf in Byron Bay, find Chris Hemsworth and eat Vegemite (you’ll quickly learn that last one). There’s a demand to see these places, which means there is always a demand for work.
That’s where you come in.
Australia is one of the easiest countries to get a Working Holiday Visa, and it’s actually the most popular country out of the 62 in the world that offers these kinds of visas.
That’s largely why it attracts 333,000 prospective workers each year who travel to experience the country, make friends and save money along the way.
Prior to 2016, travelers on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) or Work and Holiday Visa (W&HV) were only able to stay in Australia for a year. However, due to changes in legislation, travelers on a W&HV are now able to work and travel for two years—that’s a whole lot of time to experience Australia!
There are is a whole heap of things on your Australian bucket list to tick off so, this one-year itinerary for traveling in Australia on your Working Holiday Visa should serve you well.
4 Months Before Your Trip: Get Your Visa
Don’t put the cart before the horse and buy your flight first. What if your visa gets rejected? That is one expensive lesson!
Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia.
Identify the visa that you would like using the Australian Department of Home Affairs website. Depending on which country you are from you will be directed to either a 417 (Working Holiday Visa) or a 462 (Work and Holiday Visa). For example, the UK, Germany, Netherlands and many others get directed to the WHV, whereas the USA, Spain and Argentina can apply for the W&H Visa.
While there are tons of websites out there charging anywhere between $70 to $200 on top of visa fees to give you a visa, your best option is to apply directly through the Australian Government website (the website URL should always end in .gov.au).
The process is pretty simple, should only take around 30 minutes to an hour to complete and, whether you’re applying for a Working Holiday Visa or a Work and Holiday Visa, it will cost you $440 AUD.
These visas give you full working rights in Australia, with the only condition being that you cannot work for the same company for more than six months. It’s structured this way, so you work and travel. Not just both.
Note: You can only get these visas if you’re at least 18 and not yet 31 years old.
It can take anywhere between 24 hours and four weeks for your visa to be granted, so be organized and apply as early as you can. But once you have it, the clock starts ticking—you have 12 months to make your way to Australia. From your date of entry, you are then given one year to work and travel.
3 Months Before Your Trip: Decide Where You Want to Go and Book Your Flight
Once you have your visa (which can take anywhere between 24 hours and four weeks), you’ll want to buy your flights. But Australia is massive, which can induce some serious decision anxiety.
You’re coming over to Australia to work and travel, so you’re going to want a perfect combination of the two.
Well, Melbourne is the world’s most livable city with, beautiful beaches, unique laneway bars and cafes and really, really good nightlife. It’s a cultural melting pot and a foodies’ paradise, and the breathtaking street art makes it, in my humble opinion, the best place to start your travels.
Plus, there are great value-for-your-money flights to Melbourne from most major international airports, with a one-way ticket generally costing $450 USD.
Melbourne is literally the most livable city in the world!
I know many of you likely have Sydney on your mind as a place to start. Just keep in mind it’s going to be the most expensive choice with some serious competition. Because, really—did you think you’re the only backpacker to make Sydney your first choice?
News flash—you’re not, which means “backpacker jobs” will be slightly more difficult to get, especially if you don’t have experience. This isn’t to deter; it’s just some food for thought. Bring your A-game if you plan to find work in Sydney (and maybe a few extra thousand in the bank to tide you over).
Pro Tip: As with any flights, try to avoid the holidays as you will have to pay a premium to fly, and keep in mind that June through September is Australia’s winter (yes, we do have winters here in Australia), so flights are generally a bit cheaper then.
1 Month Before Your Trip: Save That Money and Plan an Epic Party
If it costs $200 just to walk across Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and a whopping $5 for a dozen eggs at the grocery store, just imagine how expensive Australia will be.
The good news is that Australia is known for paying well. But you’re going to want to have a few dollars stashed away before you go since you probably won’t be working as soon as you land.
Hanging Rock in the Blue Mountains, Australia.
Your biggest expense is going to be your accommodation. A week in a hostel in Australia is generally around $150 USD. In any standard week, you should anticipate spending anywhere between $300 to $800 USD, depending on activities, your dining and, most importantly, your drinking habits.
(Take my advice: If you drink in pubs the whole time, you will somehow spend a lot of money.)
Just take a look at this breakdown of the average costs of expenses in three major Australian cities. For more, check out Numbeo for a cost of living breakdown in other cities around Australia.
The Average Cost of Living in Sydney (in USD):
Hostel per night: $32
One-bedroom apartment per week: $329
Pint of beer: $5.50
Cheap restaurant meal: $11
A day trip to the Blue Mountains: $75
The Average Cost of Living in Melbourne:
Hostel per night: $25
One-bedroom apartment per week: $298
Pint of beer: $5.50
Cheap restaurant meal: $11
A day trip to the Great Ocean Road: $80
The Average Cost of Living in Cairns:
Hostel per night: $18
One-bedroom apartment for a week: $181
Pint of beer: $5.20
Cheap restaurant meal: $11
Day trip to the Great Barrier Reef: $145
I would recommend getting to a savings point of $5,200 USD before you go, and I’ll tell you why later.
In the meantime, you may want to check out this handy guide on saving money for travel and creating a financial plan that will help you save over the long term.
Day 1-10: Get Set up, Meet People & Tick off That Bucket List
The plane touches down and you wake up from what was likely a very long flight, no matter where you came from. You rub your eyes and, suddenly, you’re in the coastal capital of the southeastern Australian state of Victoria!
Rugged rocks forms hug the bay beaches. The national parks are rife with wildlife. The center city is bustling with coffee fiends and shopping addicts and bar crawlers—vice or virtue, you decide. You’re finally here to pick your poison.
But before you dive right in, I would strongly advise giving yourself at least a week to get yourself set up. You’ll need to open a bank account, get a Tax File Number (this is essential if you want to work), and get your hands on a SIM card.
Traveling for the first time is daunting, and the reason why you started this adventure is to meet new people and to have life-changing experiences.
Noosa coastline
In Melbourne, you actually have the option to check off all the quintessential bucket list items for Australia, like petting a kangaroo or koala bear or learning to surf on some of the best surf beaches on earth.
You can also experience worldwide sporting events such as the Australia Grand Prix or the Australian Open, or go snowboarding or skiing just three hours away by car.
Plus, two popular day trips from Melbourne, include watching the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, when hundreds of penguins emerge from the surf to waddle back to their burrows for the night, and wine tasting in the Yarra Valley wine region.
Day 11-60: Venture Out to the Surrounding Areas
If you’ve taken my advice (and I hope you have) and landed in Melbourne, then I’ve spelled out your plan perfect for you.
Head west out of Melbourne and you have the Great Ocean Road, the most scenic drive in all of Australia and the number one road trip in Oz. It is the fourth most popular destination in Australia, and it’s an absolute must, especially if you’re in Melbourne. It’s about 150 miles of coastline-hugging, beach-kissing, rainforest-penetrating road with the most iconic part being the 12 Apostles.
A five-day road is perfect for this destination. This is especially true if you couple it up with a little-known destination called The Grampians. Then you can either loop back to Melbourne or keep heading west to Adelaide and the outback.
I would then recommend touching base back in Melbourne for a few days before heading in the next destination: east toward Sydney and Cairns. Every east coast trip is different, but you should travel for at least a month and preferably two to three if you want to experience it properly.
Overlooking the Sydney Harbour
The best way to travel the east coast of Australia is to take a hop-on-hop-off Greyhound bus the whole way there.
You could also find a group of other travelers to buy a used car together. You’ll find tons of cars for sale on sites like Gumtree (the Australian Craigslist) or Facebook groups like Backpacker Cars Australia.
If buying isn’t your thing, you can also rent campervans. You can get them from Jucy, Spaceships, Travel Wheels, Travellers AutoBarn, Hippie, Mighty and Wicked. There are plenty of different options depending on the level of luxury you want.
Likewise, if you visit hostels, check the bulletin boards for flyers advertising used cars for sale.
Months 2-8: Start the Job Hunt and Get to Work!
Just because you’re onto the job hunting stage doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. After living on the road for weeks on end, you’ll probably crave some stability and structure. At least a little bit. And you’ll meet even more people while finally earning yourself some money!
Finding Work in Australia
When you’re done traveling, make sure you have enough money to last a month. You probably won’t find a job on day one of your hunt. That means you need to have enough savings to last you until you find work. Look at job websites like Job Search, Seek and Gumtree to find work in these specific fields.
Making friends and networking is a great way to find a job too!
But don’t spend all day on websites job hunting. Talk to people around your hostel, and ask the workers at the hostel for the best place to find work. In most major cities, there is a specific area where there are always people recruiting in hospitality. So print out that resume and enjoy the day going into as many places as possible asking if they’re looking for any workers.
These areas are your hospitality hotspots, which are full of bars, restaurants and cafes.
Sydney: Kings Cross, Bondi and Oxford Street
Melbourne: St Kilda, Chapel Street and Lygon Street
Brisbane: Fortitude Valley
Cairns: Everywhere
Darwin: Mitchell Street
Adelaide: Glenelg and the CBD
Perth: Northbridge
It is sometimes harder to find employment if you have a specific field you want to work in because most employers believe that working holiday visa makers can only be part of their company for six months, which is generally true.
What to Expect While Working in Australia
The minimum wage is $18.93 AUD in Australia, and most casual positions in hospitality and tourism pay around $20 AUD.
The type of work ranges from being a waiter up to being a skydive instructor—you can view the jobs available to travelers on Working Holiday Visas on the Home Affairs website here, but do bear in mind the work has to be above the Tropic of Capricorn and in certain postcodes.
Your new bffs?
Some aspects of the Australian work culture may also surprise foreigners. Understand these cultural differences:
There’s a lot of casual conversation.
Swearing in the workplace is to be expected.
There will be a lot of happy hours.
Australians are super laidback and uphold a “no-fuss” attitude, which can be jarring in stressful situations.
Office romances are a thing, and they’re not quite as taboo.
Most offices have flat organizational structures, without much hierarchy if any at all.
National workplace safety laws, “Occupational Health and Safety” or “OH&S” are taken very seriously.
Australians use a lot of blunt humor, even in the workplace.
Australians embrace a work-hard-play-hard culture.
The standard working week in Australia is 38 hours per week (7.6 hours per day). They value their time outside of work.
Month 9-12: Keep Traveling
You’ve been working for a few months—that’s a serious high five moment! Take a break. Go on a trip. Let loose a little. You deserve it!
Generally, people’s second journey within Australia is the outback. That may mean the wetland of Kakadu near Darwin. There, you’ll see some of the most jaw-dropping waterfalls and the highest concentration of salt-water crocodiles. I recommend a tour there for at least three days.
Entering Kata Tjuta in the outback of Australia
You can couple this up with the third most popular destination in Australia, the Red Centre. With the cultural history surrounding this area, the iconic sunset at Uluru and nights underneath millions of stars, this is another bucket-list item to tick. To get to this destination you can fly into Alice Springs or Yulara airport.
Alternatively, you can go overland from Darwin or Adelaide for a true outback adventure.
From here you can fly to the place you fell in love with.
Maybe you felt like Byron Bay had a spiritual calling for you. Or you realized that the busyness of Sydney was actually your “cup of tea.” Maybe you’ve been dying to get back to Cairns. Or maybe the world’s best coffee is pulling you back to Melbourne.
Want to Spend a Second Year in Australia?
So many people fall in love with the Australian way of life, so it’s not a surprise that thousands of WHV and W&H Visa workers choose to extend their visas for another year.
View from above—Australia, Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise
The Australian Government created an initiative for understaffed industries. This is for people who want to travel and work in Australia for extended periods of time. And the second year working holiday extension allows WHV and W&H Visa holders to extend their initial one-year visa to two if they work 88 days in one of those specific sectors:
Plant and Animal Cultivation
Fishing and Pearling
Tree Farming and Felling
Mining
Construction
At the end of your initial employment, your manager will have to sign off on Form 1263. This includes their ABN (Australian Business Number) to ensure that you have completed the work. Then you will apply for your second-year visa through the same website that you got your first one.
Tip: If you’re on a W&HV (USA I’m talking to you) you can extend your stay by working in hospitality and tourism, as long as these jobs are in Northern Australia. This work ranges from waiting tables to being a skydiving instructor—you can view the jobs for travelers on Working Holiday Visas on the Home Affairs website here.
This all said, you might want to head home or travel in between your first and second year. It’s up to you when you decide to use your second-year visa. Just make sure you use it before you’re 31 or you’ll lose eligibility.
Whatever you do, just remember that you’re going to Australia to work and travel. You left that all-work-and-no-play lifestyle behind at home.
Well, unless you’re this dude, that is.
So now the only question is, what’s the first adventure before you start working in Australia? Let us know in the comments!
