Ranking the girls magic Winx outfits

I was bored so I figured I was gonna make a post about my favorite show growing up. Favorite show is an euphemism, it was actually my religion 😂

Disclaimer: This is only my personal opinion^^

6th place: Tecna (4,5/10)

While I applaud the originality...might be a lil too original for my taste. It took me 18 years to figure out the green things on her back were wings. I don't like the shape of the helmet and - this one is personal - but purple has never been my color. And I know she was sweating in that damn suit. The one detail I do like is the shape of the heels. She still looks good though, I mean, when did she ever not look good ?

5th place: Bloom (5,5/10)

Bloom is my favorite Winx (I'm only talking about s1-3 Bloom, we don't talk about the other one) but while Tecna is too much, I feel like her transformation is too simple ? It's pretty, but it lacks some element that would distinguish it from the others, some originality...some spark. I do like the shape of the top and the boots are cute. Also think there is some appeal to simplicity + blue really is her color. Wished they did something with her hair it would have made a big difference.

4th place: Musa (7,5/10)

I really hesitated but finally put her at 4th. I love the high boots and the see-through part of the outfit. The ribbon on her arm is a nice detail but what I like the most is the shape of her wings, reminds me of a dragonfly, sooo cute. Of course her piggytails are iconic (bonus point for the headset) and there's no better match than black hair with a red outfit. Really, the only reason it's not higher on the list is because while I think it looks great, I would've liked something a little more...idk messy for Musa ? You know something that screams rebel, this outfit needed some ripped parts to it.

3rd place: Flora (8,5/10)

Hesitated btw her and Musa, but she won the dual. I love the shades of pink they used and I think it complements her skin tone perfectly + the symmetry of it all is sooo satisfying to me. Her wings scream tinkerbell and the color prevents the whole thing from being too...pink. I love the shape of the top, kinda looks like a corset and same goes for the gloves (the end of the gloves looks like petals). Overall, her outfit screams Flora and is just the perfect mix of glamor and femininity.

2nd place: Aisha/Layla (9,5/10)

First, I think green does wonders when paired with dark skin/dark hair and she is no exception. I love the skirt and the fact that we can see the shorts underneath. The shape of the outfit is chaotic and asymmetrical and I love it (especially the silver ring on her hip which links several parts of the outfit together which is so pretty and original). Bonus points for the jewelry (simple, but so effective) and the white heels which are so satisfying to me for some obscure reason.

1st place: Stella (10/10)

This one is a mistery to me. It's almost as simple as Bloom's outfit, but idk it just works so well ? Like it was meant to be ? Her boots are iconic, the twintails/bangs/headband combo is deadly. The fact that the headband is matching whatever is on her arms. I'm personally a sucker for shorts and for some reason it goes so well with the shape of the top ? And orange is just soooo her color. It screams hot, it screams Stella. I think every element on its own is rather simple but when put together they just work. Oh, and the three part wings are so pretty and add the extravagance the whole look needed.

ok since i’m so hyped here are my predictions for mikus pokemon and designs (and vocaloP) for project voltage: (disclaimer, the vocaloP choices are probably super unrealistic im not super knowledgeable on vocaloP and i don’t know who they could reasonably get this is just my very limited and biased view)

👁️‍🗨️psychic: meloetta (already confirmed)

🌊water: primarina (already confirmed)

🔥fire: skeledirge (already confirmed)

🌱grass: rillaboom (already confirmed)

⚪️normal: ok i’m gonna be pissed if either normal or fairy isn’t jigglypuff. fits the music/singing theme perfectly AND is pokemon #39 which is the miku number. if they’re cowards or put jigglypuff in the fairy slot, then i could see exploud or chatot for the music theme or maybe even lopunny for the twintails? oh or obv farfetchd cuz it was in the kei art. probably farfetchd.

this design might be closest to regular miku. or they take it in a lass/schoolgirl direction?

Oster project would be cute for this one i think! or 40mp

❄️ice: Alolan Vulpix, cuz there was already a pokemon x miku crossover with alolan vulpix. maybe lapras or frosslass or amaura tho if they don’t go with that.

gotta be tons of pale blue, maybe some pink thrown in. i wonder if they’re gonna go with the cute route or the elegant route. ooh maybe she’ll be snow miku-y

👻ghost: i can’t wait to see this one. it’s kinda hard to pick tho? i could see oricorio, but that might be used for the flying spot. gengar is basically the ghost type pokemon so i could see that as well, but i think it’s gonna be rotom. i’ve seen fanmade rotom mikus before and they’re perfect. i hope it’s that

this miku is gonna be so spookyyyy. i’m thinkin a lil mischievous and sharp teeth and stuff. wispy twintails. ik she’s an electric gym leader but iono vibes

dudeeee if they got mafumafu for this one it’d go so harddddd. they got him to do the anime op a few years ago i really hope he’s part of this collab. syudo would go hard for ghost too

🐛bug: frosmoth? illumise? maybe kriketune for the music theme… idk this one’s tough. final answer frosmoth.

⚡️electric: very well could be pikachu. it’s just a shoo in at this point. if not, then toxtricity bc of the music theme, or a pikaclone like pachirisu maybe.

👊fighting: it’s gotta be sirfetchd right? leek and all. idk if they’d wanna do two pokemon from the same line if they do farfetch’d for normal or flying. or i mean, they could be lame and go for pirouette form meloetta ig… quaquaval? iron valiant miku would go hard tho

…. the only thing that comes to mind for design is seraphim on the ring miku lmaoooo

🧚‍♀️fairy: like i said, jigglypuff. if they put jigglypuff in the normal slot, then i could see gardevoir or togekiss. i would also love tinkaton miku tho. it does kinda have twintails

🧲steel: ok hear me out. metang. her twintails could look like it’s arms. realistically, i think they’d more likely go metagross in that case tho even tho it has four arms. maybe klink? it’s got miku color in it. cobalion also has miku color. honedge? magearna miku would go hard too. final answer is metagross tho

maybe kinda robot-y? idk we definitely getting some cool grays and teal tho

🪨rock: amaura or arourus probably. i could also see diancie tho

ok i’m kinda stumped on a design and vocaloP for this one tho. genres definitely gonna be rock tho.

🗻ground: this one’s tough. palpitoad/seismatoad fit the music/sound theme but they’re ugly so i’m doubtful. could go for the fan favorite in wooper/quagsire but idk if they would. idk if wooper has the same impact in japan as he does here. nidoqueen maybe? final answer wooper ig

🪽flying: could be farfetchd. i kinda forgot it was also a flying type. i would love oricorio miku tho. ideally with parts of each form incorporated into her design, but if they just stuck to one form, i’d say pom pom for the vibes or sensu for the color.

found another pile of my! chara! parts!

Hime-senpai’s hair (Princess Long) and Elza’s hair (Perfect Long) were both from ranking in parade s2 events. Yurika’s hair (Vampire Twintails) and the Triple Sexy eye color (on Biscuit) were from a limited-time campaign. then the Rock eye color (on Milk) was from the New World Fes, and the gradient Akari hair (Dreamy Mesh) was from a type level-up (also in black for better contrast).

Hime-senpai and Yurika are my fav cute- and cool-type idols respectively, so I thought there was a p good chance I’d want to switch Milk or Biscuit to their hairstyles, but it turns out I didn’t like how they looked even a little, haha.

StarPre: Zodiac Forms

Now that I’ve got the good quality official art, c’mon, did anyone seriously think I would not ramble about the zodiac forms in another long post? :P lol

Crap, I should be studying my Japanese since I’m traveling to Tokyo next week (GONNA GO VISIT THE PRECURE STORE, WOOOOT~!) but I want to get this post out first cuz I know I won’t have time or internet access to do it later.

So let’s do this!

Taurus form – BRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSS

This one I like best out of Star’s two forms (but Pisces is awesome too!) for that reason but I also love how they changed her short tutu-style skirt into an asymmetric, flowing one. And that cow pattern is to die for~! <3

The butterfly earrings and horns are a very nice touch as well! *chef’s kiss*

Pisces form – I can’t explain why or how Hikaru pulls off the mermaid look so well…but she just does, okay?

Maybe it’s the twintails.

Anyways, super cute! Adding a touch of blue and deep magenta to the overall light pink theme really makes her look more tropical.

Then there are the sea accessories and ugh! Sometimes when I look at this, I’m reminded of Mermaid Melody except the way Star is designed here looks a lot more fun.

Before I get into this, I just want to say that we can now celebrate Lala’s bubble shorts blooming into space dresses! Aaaaaahhh~ <D

Leo form – Y’know when I saw Lala go “RAWR!” in the movie trailer, I was like “This is it, if this is the last thing I see, I’ll be happy I lived”, hahaha!

Lion imagery is just so cool, y’know? (as Gelato can testify)

The wild hair, the crown.

Yeap. This pretty much confirms it. Lala is Space Queen. ;D

Cancer form – I’m simultaneously gushing over her crab hair, how much I love this shade of yellow green and giggling mad that she resembles a jellyfish more than a crustacean. xDD

*sigh* Really, I think Lala’s forms turned out the best. They faithfully captured the aesthetics of the Star Princesses while retaining Milky’s original design and without making it overly gaudy, too.

Lala, you are perfect! <3

Libra form – Normally, I would say that’s too crazy for even crazy magical girl hair but then I remember Felice’s Alexandrite form and how extra that was in all its Mother Nature floral glory…

…and I just shut my trap.

Still, it seems like Libra form had the least effort put into it.

I mean, yea, they moved some colors around (more like seeped the orange into the ombre of Soleil’s hair) and extended the reaches of her dress but it’s practically the same thing save for Libra’s hairdo…which looks more like a wig she put on that anything.

That’s just it. The dual cornucopia there catches your attention right away on how…fake it looks that it’s as if the rest don’t matter as much. Which is sad cuz the Libra Star Princess is perhaps one of the best Star Princesses based on what little personality we did get from each of them. And I just wanted to see something more creative for her form, that’s all. :(

Maybe it’ll look better in motion? We’ll just have to see if that happens in the movie. As of right now, this still picture isn’t really helping my impression of it.

Scorpio form – Much better. Absolutely adore the slimmer cut and my, does Elena look downright gorgeous with a ponytail! <D

I’m always reading about how “full of passion” Scorpios are and while I don’t let those descriptions get in the way of appreciating their characters, have to admit that “passion” was the first word that came to my mind when I saw Soleil in this form.

She literally looks like a goddess of sunsets. Beautiful.

Capricorn form – Still not sure if I’m the type of person who favors something just because I so happen to share a quality or trait with that one certain aspect of a character…

And I freely admit that the Capricorn form is not the best of bunch (though it’s definitely not the worst)…

…but it looks unarguably lovely regardless and I love it with all my heart because me is a Capricorn, after all~ <3

The tiny hearts themselves may be a bit much but it’s part of Capricorn Star Princess’s design so honestly, I have zero problem with it. They’re adorable~

Then I kinda squealed because Selene traded her umbrella/lamp shade skirt for a fancy bed canopy! LOL xDD

But most of all, it’s simply wonderful to see Madoka with wavy hair (AGAIN WITH THE HAIR!). Ooooo, gotta love that transition from light purple to fuchsia! X3

Like I said before, they made the Cures’ respective color schemes and the Star Princesses’ color schemes quite compatible. But that’s a given since they’re within close range of each other anyway.

Sagittarius form – Ok, I may have said Lala’s forms looked the best but I believe the Sagittarius form alone can blow everyone else’s out of the sky.

I mean, look at her! Isn’t she friggin’ STUNNING?!

The long side pony tail (*SCREAMS*), the mature vibe the long gown gives off and most of all, MADOKA HOLDING AN ACTUAL BOW AND ARROW AND LOOKING LIKE A WARRIOR MAIDEN DESCENDING FROM THE HEAVENS TO PURGE THE EVIL FROM THIS WRETCH WORLD!!

HAAAAAA……I dunno why I get so emotional over form changes, I just do.

Alright, first things first. This is not the place for me to spill my grievances about Cosmos in general so rest assured, I won’t do that. But I am allowed to say one thing.

Toei. I don’t understand your incomplete logic.

Cure Cosmos is a rainbow Cure. You either give her all twelve differently colored forms or you give her none at all.

Seriously, it makes no sense that she gets four zodiac forms, leaving the other girls with only two when we could have had:

1) the original starters with three zodiac forms each

2) Cosmos with either twelve (because SHE’S THE CURE OF EFFIN’ RAINBOWS!!) or one exceptionally glorified rainbow super form (with seven cat tails because RAINBOWS!!)

This is less about midseason Cure privilege (which Cosmos has heaps of) or the fact that they won’t be able to fit so many forms in an hour long special (it’s movie budget so piss off!) and more about not doing your math right to get the best, maximum output! xP

*sigh* Ok, petty raging done (for now). Moving along…

Aries form – As some of you may know, I’m not a fan of Cosmos’ rainbow skirt but I find I can easily overlook that (along with the cat ears, the flat top hat décor, the weird braids and the dorito clips) to appreciate the full picture.

And the Aries form may just be my most favorite out of Cosmos’ forms. Since Aries is the ram constellation, the white wool trim looks appropriate, especially against the crimson of her outfit. Frankly, I think Cosmos looks better in this red design than her normal blue-rainbow Cure form.

Then there’s the poofy (kyaa~!) hair that just acts so well as a backdrop to the ram horns.

Mm, yes, definitely my favorite. *nod nod*

Gemini form – Again, where the fuck were you when Met Gala was happening this year?!

Like, this would not only fit right in with the camp theme but could’ve won best dressed that night!

The only thing I’d consider getting rid of is the rainbow but then it’d probably look less campy so maybe not.

Anyways, I was the least fond of this form when I first saw it but the more I look at it, the more I’m learning to like it…??

The red cape (and cherry earrings) provides a sharp contrast to all the green going on, too.

Virgo form – Azure blue complements light pink and white in a very angelic sort of way. Pretty~

Cosmos’ hair also looks delightfully charming when it’s curled and has a flower decoration in it.

…That’s all I have to say, really.

Oh no, wait.

It’s extremely odd to me that Cosmos gets two zodiac forms that correspond to other Cures’ birthday signs and she doesn’t even get the form of her own birthday sign.

Hikaru’s is Aries and Elena’s is Virgo. Look who got those forms.

Yuni’s sign is Libra. That form went to Soleil instead.

…WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?! >:/

Aquarius form – Is it just me or do the rainbow pleats actually work here?

We’re dealing with water and the droplet beads attached to the ends really reminds me of the rain so that’s probably why.

Cosmos’ hair also looks mega good in waves, too.

And the stars~! Exquisite!

On another note, again she always comes as a strange package because if cats in general hate water, then pairing Cosmos up with Aquarius is the biggest mismatch of them all, them both having a blue theme be damned. xD;

It’s just a real shame that these forms are exclusive to the movie. I mean, I know we all have our opinions on whether or not Form Changes are actually useful in the tv series (I don’t care, I just like looking at them and that’s reason enough for me)…

But the stock footage was severely underwhelming for StarPre so having these in the show may have done some good to alleviate that feeling.

Also, the Zodiac forms have a much closer relation to the space motif than the Twinkle forms do. Seriously, the most noticeable things about the Twinkle forms are the tiaras and it’s weird because we already have the Star Princesses. So WHY do we need to put tiaras on the Cures? They’re not aiming to become princesses themselves, they’re channeling the powers of the stars (aka the Zodiac princesses!) so they should take on appearance respective of the star signs!

Again, I really don’t understand Toei logic.

Is there anyone out there who tried to draw what the first four Cures would look like in the forms that went to Cosmos? And if there is, may I see them? Please, pretty pretty please please please?!?!?

Fall 2017 Anime First Impressions

And so here I am again, three weeks late because I can never keep up. Fall 2017 thus far doesn’t seem too, too bad, but I’m sure that will change, considering the multiple original shows on my watching list. Luckily there’s plenty of cute girls doing cute things shows, which is all I need, really. As usual, here’s what I’m watching, with MAL links and original shows marked: Osake wa Fuufu (MAL) Starting off with a short show this time. Osake wa Fuufu follows a wife, Chisato, and her husband, Sora. Sora likes making drinks, and Chisato likes drinking. Match made in heaven, if you ask me. The show even includes drink recipes depending on the featured drink, and a food pairing with it. It's a three minute show about a cute, drunk wife. What's not to like?

URAHARA (MAL) Taking a sharp departure from the calmness of Osake wa Fuufu, URAHARA involves three fashion-loving Harajuku girls saving the planet from aliens. This show is Harajuku personified. Everything from the character design to the OP explodes with a bubbly, colorful atmosphere, wrapped up in a beautiful watercolor aesthetic. ORESAMA's fantastic brand of electropop is the exact cherry on top the art style needed. Rito is the skateboarding, soft-spoken girl with demon horns, Kotoko is the peppy blonde kemonomimi, and Mari is the twintailed idol who also owns the clothes shop the girls work at. After aliens sucking up cultural landmarks appear, an American girl wearing a talking fried shrimp shows up, gives them "physical manifestations of imagination," and they promptly transform into magical girls and fight the aliens, making them explode and turn into donuts. Sure, that made no sense at all, but everything's so colorful. Capped off by a similarly bubbly ED, this show is just outright fun. If it stays about three cute girls happily fighting fashion-stealing aliens, I'm in.

Dies Irae (MAL) Just as an FYI, Dies Irae aired an episode zero prequel, but I've waited until the formal episode one before doing any impressions, seeing as the prequel was a complete clusterfuck anyway. Now then, after the prequel involving Nazi supermen, Dies Irae's main series cuts to the future and the protagonist Ren, a solemn oft-hospitalized teen. Plenty of mysteries abound - a sudden murder, a strange vision at a museum, a runaway friend, a girl calling him Cagliostrio in a dream - interspersed throughout an otherwise thoroughly boring slice of life. Following that, the episode alos teases plenty of the insane bullshit the prequel was few of. In one line, one character drops 5 proper nouns we have had zero interaction with, with the off mention of one name from the prequel episode. Foreshadowing is fine; introducing three characters in the span of 15 seconds and then talking about 5+ more of them is a bit much. The art is nothing special, and the orchestral soundtrack is unique enough, but if the prequel was any indication, this show is going to get insane, really fast. And not insane like the fun, rollercoaster ride kind. More like the trying-too-hard, unnecesarily edgy, impossible to actually follow kind.

Net-juu no Susume (MAL) Ah, the MMO spin on the isekai genre. Net-juu follows Moriko, a NEET woman living alone who devotes her time to playing a guy (Hayashi) in an MMO. She meets with an amazingly cute girl, Lily (who later we see to be a guy IRL), and they start adventuring together. Cut to 70-odd levels of grinding, joining a guild, and an upgraded PC later, Moriko/Hayashi has settled in just fine. First off, Lily's VA is the fucking cutest, holy shit. My reactions about echoed Moriko's anytime she was being cute. Other than that, the first episode was surprisingly sincere. Relatively light on the "MY REAL LIFE IS ON THE INTERNET!!" in favor of Moriko just being more of an awkward, lazy video game nerd. Using video games to not have to deal with real life is nothing new, but the heart with which Hayashi/Lily meet and grow in just one episode impressed me. This could go either way, and I'm hoping it stays a interesting vignette on the trials and tribulations of the two lives Moriko lives.

[ORIG] Just Because! (MAL) Next up, Just Because sees Eita Izumi returning after four years to his locale's high-school, reuniting with people he lost touch with. The first episode sees a wonderful moment of return, as Eita practices with an old baseball friend, leading the practicing band to strike up into the chorus they played at games, seeminginly on their own. The trumpets flowing into the full orchestral matches the rising tone perfectly. Juxatposed with a Photography Club facing termination and a former class prez buried in obligations, a web of connections lies in wait, ready to reaccept Eita. The art is quite muted, and even with complaints about the hot weather, the sun is behind clouds and the cityscape is grey, as opposed to the beating sun we often see. Just Because's first episode, while not telling much, showed plenty, and indicated what the main issues would be and who would be involved, and that's exactly what a first episode should do. If an original work is showing that early on, maybe it has more direction than most - and that's a very good thing.

[ORIG] Two Car (MAL) Sidecar racing is something I haven't seen, for sure. The island of Miyakejima, with its uncontrolled speed limits, is home to famous sidecar racing, or "kneeler racing" competitions, and the show follows the endlessly arguing but amazingly similar local team of Yuri and Megami. A bouncy pop soundtrack plays over the high-speed racing, creating a light yet competitive tone that perfectly fits the colored visuals, featuring the same artist/production company as Masamune-kun no Revenge from a few seasons ago. Discord has cropped up between Yuri and Megumi due to their beloved coach leaving for greener courses and the feelings they had for him as he left. The cuts between the high-speed raising and the melancholic, reflective flashbacks does quite well in explaining their movements throughout the race - catching us up to speed, so to speak. The tone of the show comes across perfectly as the episode closes, backed up by the fantastic soundtrack and beautifully done OP and ED. You just feel this show is time spent on an island, split between relaxing and racing. It's wonderfully done. It remains to be seen if this show will echo others like Minami Kamakura and Bakuon and go really into the mechanical aspect of sidecar racing. However, this show is a surprisingly emotionally-based piece where emotions are expressed on the race course - and I'm interested in more.

[ORIG] Animegataris (MAL) Minoa is our orange-haired, ahoge-sporting protag, called out by the school princess Kamiigusa to talk about anime, of all things. Go figure. Coming off the trash that was Gamers last season, the blonde perfect girl actually being a huge nerd is already tiring. Minoa is looking for the name of an anime that moved her as a kid, and to do it suggests to get the anime club back in action, then promptly gets roped into leading it. Her endless optimism isn't original but it's always refreshing, and the use of anime to let Minoa see "more of Kamiigusa's faces" is a bit better than just having the red face of a normally "perfect" girl besmirched by the recognition she likes anime. Also there's a huge-headed cat and a somehow magical beret, which came out of the blue just a bit. We get a sneak peak of the future members, ranging across all archetypes and social cliques, and then the magical beret comes back and the cat now talks. Interested to see where the hell any of that goes, but if this stays more comedy and less Gamers romance-misunderstanding bullshit, I'll be satisfied. Also, both the OP and ED (especially the OP - GARNiDELiA is so good) are great. Some very strange plot choices, especially worrying in an original work, but if they pay off this will be enjoyable. Let's just hope they do.

Mahoutsukai no Yome (MAL) Backing off the slice of life, Mahoutsukai imagines a modern day world intertwined with fantasy - beastmen, magic, and the few humans who can see it - one of them being Chise Hatori, ostracized for her power until she is bought at an auction by a legendary mage, Elias, who aims to make her his apprentice. Chise is actually a "Sleigh Beggy," a rare being that attracts "faries and mysteries," whatever that will eventually entail. Mahoutsukai thus far gives off a kind of Uchouten Kazoku vibe as Chise moves into Elias' tranquil house. An ostensibly normal-looking environment inhabited by mystical beings, and a duality of calmness and turbulent themes below echo Uchouten's politics. The juxtaposition of the forcible buying of Chise versus the welcoming environment she is brought in creates an interesting dynamic that I'm interested in seeing played out. The animation is beautiful, and the small switches to a more chibi style aren't disruptive in the least. Aside from some confusion about the initial setup of the world, if this show becomes a magical slice-of-life with even a fraction of the heart of Uchouten, I'm in.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou (MAL) Two girls in old-school fatigues, cruising around a cold, apocalyptic, industrial wasteland. Sounds cool to me. Chito is the collected, tired foil to Yuuri's galavanting, charismatic self. The animation is a bit divergent, in that while the landscapes are detailed in their greyness, the art of the two girls echoes something like Hidamari in its style. While initially strange, it didn't become anything more than just "noticeable." The muscial backdrop is a flowing, airy tone that fits well with the girls having fun praticing shooting or walking around looking for supplies.The music and the attitudes of Chi and Yuu create an atmosphere to the point that doesn't feel like a depressing, sober look at war. Seeing it through the eyes of two children also puts the concepts of war and conflict in eerily simple terms, providing a new look at a concept done to death, so to speak. There's a strangely relaxed feel despite the landscape and color scheme. It remains to be seen if this will go the route of Made in Abyss, especially with an out of place scene at the end of the episode, but while MiA was fucking phenomenal, I could do with less bawling two seasons in a row. This is a strange one, but the simple story of Chi and Yuu trudging across the snowy landscape is appealing.

Konohana Kitan (MAL) Cute fox girls working at a traditional Japanese hot spring hotel? I'm in. Yuzu is the nervous newbie, Kiri is the charismatic head attendant, Natsume is spunky and atheletic, Satsuki is responsible to a fault, Ren is the doll-like one whose personality doesn't match her cute exterior, and there's the diminutive, quiet Sakura. The personalities of the girls are varied and interplay nicely, and I look forward to seeing how Yuzu fits in. Moreover, the art is fantastic. The character designs echo perfectly the individual personalities, and the landscapes of cherry blossoms are stunning. I personally love the traditional Japanese aesthetic the inn and surrounding town embody, and it obviously fits well with the fact that the girls are all kitsunes. Konohana seems to me like a slightly less energetic/comedic Urara Meirochou, which is a good thing. The aesthetic is great, the girls are cute - this is a show for healing, and I need it.

Blend-S (MAL) Maika, a perpetual job hunter with her naturally scary eyes, finds her home at a cafe where all the waitresses are archetypes, as the sadistic one. Blend-S is almost like a more overt version of the varied personalities in Working!, with all comedy and less romance. I quite like the juxtaposition of the girls' normal personalities when talking to each other and their work personalities (especially when the line blurs). While usually its a cute girl who's actually evil or something and used as boring shock value, being the point of the show pivots the concept into a new way I enjoy. Even moreso, Maika especially has plenty of quirks that bely her role as the "normal" main character. The art is clean and sharp, and the girls have great character designs - I really like the facial designs. The OP, by the VAs (which is always a plus), is fantastic both in design and music, and compliments the more relaxed ED (which is also by the VAs). Overall, this show is friendly and the girls are cute. Sounds good to me.

Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-bitch na Ken (MAL) Adaptations with stock character protagonists and plenty of overt fanservice. Yay. I'm amazed this isn't from an LN, because it is exactly that kind of show. Shobitch begins with our MC Shinozaki confessing to Kosaka, which she accepts. Then she learns "how to be a good girlfriend," which far more often than not involves plenty of fanservice. Also, despite him having a girlfriend, there's a whole variety of other girls interested in him - the childhood friend and imouto get ticked off the list int he first six minutes. On the bright side, the art is great. Character designs aside from the protag are varied and well-drawn. Kosaka's earnestness with which she wants to be a good girlfriend is endearing in itself, but the 100% focus on sexual themes is just a bit tiring. Sort of like how Kuzu no Honkai went from seriously emotional to reducing any character motivation to "the only way I can be loved is physically." Regardless, you know exactly what you're getting into with a title like this show. There are some genuine emotional moments, but they are few and very far between. Otherwise, Shobitch is a well-drawn yet bland ecchi definitely-not-LN adaptation.

Inuyashiki (MAL) Last but not least, adding to the limited action slate I'm watching this season, we have Inuyashiki. Inuyashiki is, for lack of a better term, strange. It begins with nearly all CG, but then transitions to a mix of normal animation and CG for the rest of the episode. The first half of episode one is one of the most solemn, depressing sequences I've seen, and that's blown away by a whirlwind of aliens, body-swapping, and mechanical bodies. While the tonal shift is quite jarring, the change wasn't anything completely incomprehensible. The problem will be where this will go, now that Ichiro, our man with months to live, is now equipped with alien technology. I'm hoping that within the mix of action there will be a sense that Ichiro, now unshackled by sickness, can make concrete steps to make his life better. While the action shots were nice-looking, and the CG actually doesn't look half bad, with how emotionally powerful the first half of episode one is I want to see more of that as well. Either way, Inuyashiki has my attention, and I'm eager to see where Ichiro goes.

Nico adjusted the oversized bow on the tie that went with her outfit. It was the first outfit she had worn with her subgroup, BiBi, and looking at her reflection brought memories from the past months with them. And this was likely their last photoshoot together, though not just BiBi, µ’s as well. Nico’s last photoshoot with the group that dragged her out of her funk and let her shine alongside them. Nico’s last photoshoot with her…

Nico choked down a bit of bitterness. Now was not the time. There had been a lot of lasts in the recent days and she would get through this one just as she had the others.

Quickly, she turned her head from side to side, checking the ribbons in her twin tails before quickly flashing a smile and her signature gesture. She wasn’t feeling it one hundred percent, but what she saw in the mirror was good enough to fool most, possibly even the nosy Nozomi.

She stepped out of the dressing room and…

“Kyaaa!” a voice cried as Nico collided with someone.

“Gah! Sorry, Maki-chan!” the twintailed girl apologized, not needing to see her to know who it was. Still, she turned towards… by the gods, she had forgotten how good that dress looked on the redhead. The gold chains off the shoulder, the choker, the black and red bow in her hair with the black rose in the center; it all worked together to make her look amazing. But then, if Nico was being completely honest with herself, she believed the younger girl could wear a burlap sack and still look good.

“Nico-chan?”

Nico blinked back to reality. “Sorry, Maki-chan.”

“You said that already. And… I’m sorry as well. I… wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” Maki’s eyes didn’t seem to be able to find a point to settle. Was she… checking Nico out?

Well, either way, it was the boost Nico needed to bury her melancholy for a moment. “Is Nico-nii’s charm too distracting, Maki-chan?” She asked in a syrupy sweet voice and she struck a pose.

“W-what was that?” Maki’s gaze snapped up to meet Nico’s. “I don’t get it.”

“This dress really is cute on Nico, isn’t it?” the twintailed girl changed her pose. “It’s almost unfair because Nico is already so~ amazingly cute.”

“Gross…”

“What?!” Nico retorted as her voice returned to normal. “How could you say that? And here Nico was just about to compliment Maki-chan on her dress!”

“You were?” Maki raised a skeptical eyebrow.

“Of course! I was going to say that Maki-chan’s outfit suits her well! But now I’ve thought better of it.” Nico smirked. “Then again, maybe I should say it anyway because the color of that rose matches the color of Maki’s heart!”

A throaty growl escaped through Maki’s sneer and she was about to rebut when Eli poked her head around the corner.

“Nico, Maki.” The blonde said motioning for them follow. “The photographer is ready for us. Quit flirting and get over here.”

“We’re not flirting!” The two protested in unison before glaring at each other.

“Who would want to flirt with her anyway?” Maki added, practically stomping towards Eli.

“Says the girl who was hugging me, oh so tightly, during the group photo.” Nico grumbled.

“What?”

“Nico’s got a point, Maki.” Eli pointed out.

“Bueehhh?” the first year balked.

“Ha!” Nico pointed at her junior.

“But you weren’t exactly resisting.” The former student body president added.

“Well that’s obviously because…” Nico trailed off. Because I liked it… Maybe we were flirting?

Wait, did Maki even know how to flirt? Sure the redhead had her rare moments of being somewhat affectionate, but that could be done unconsciously. Flirting required something more… something more… flirty…? Nico shook her head as her mind failed to wrap itself around the concept of a flirty Maki.

“Because…?” Eli repeated the last word the raven-haired girl had said.

“Ah, there you are.” The photographer looked up from the camera she was adjusting. “We have a couple of different ideas for poses already, but feel free to make suggestions if you have ideas as well.”

“Thank you, we will.” Eli replied with a nod.

Almost a half hour later, Nico found herself sitting in front of a kneeling Maki while Eli stooped nearby. She had been sitting in the same position for a little too long and needed to adjust. However, in doing so, her head bumped into the girl behind her.

“Oops, sorry, Maki-chan.” Nico apologized to the girl hovering above her.

Maki didn’t reply verbally, but a moment later, arms clad in sheer fabric wrapped around Nico’s shoulders.

“Maki-chan?” Nico questioned, feeling her muscles tighten as she realized the nature of the softness that pressed against her shoulder blades.

“Oh, good idea, Nishikino-san.” The photographer called. “Relax more, Yazawa-san, you’re too tense.”

“Uhm, alright…” Nico willed herself to calm down.

“Excellent.” The woman raised her camera again and started shooting.

Nico felt another softness settle behind her temple.

“I’m sorry, too, Nico-chan.” A voice whispered, breath wafting gently over Nico’s ear and sending electricity through her body.

By the gods, was Maki doing this on purpose? This embrace felt completely different from the group picture. Was Maki actually flirting? Had Nico been wrong in her assumptions about her underclassman?

Nico’s mind was burning through thoughts like a hard luck gambler through chips and it was taking almost every ounce of her conscious effort to continue to appear relaxed. She turned her head ever so slightly and realized she could just make out the younger girl’s heartbeat; a steady rhythm in sharp contrast with her own. Maki was calm. She likely didn’t notice the effect she was having on Nico.

Just go with it. Just like with the group shot. If Maki wants to hug you, let her hug you. It was a deceptively simple solution for the strange juxtaposition of Maki acting on her whims and Nico wanting to run away. Embrace it… pun intended?

Nico took a slow breath and released it, barely registering that the photographer spoke and Eli shifted her position. Placing a hand on Maki’s arm, she finally let herself relax into the embrace. The warmth really was quite comforting. No matter how many times Maki hugged her, Nico doubted she would tire of it and two in one day was unprecedented. She prayed to whatever deity would listen that this wouldn’t be the last.

“Perfect.” The photographer said as another shot was taken.

Author’s Notes Continued: When I write scenes like this, I can’t help but wonder if I made the references obvious enough or if I should point them out.

Anyway, this scene was primarily inspired by an old post I found here at the end of last year. I knew I would want to write about it eventually, so I bookmarked it. Obviously, I’ve now written one of them, but I’m still at a wall with the other; primarily about where it should be in the HtHaN timeline, as it will affect what might be referenced, as well as how some refer to one another.
