Muito perto da estreia de Avatar: O Caminho da Água, James Cameron disse em entrevista a GQ que chegou a peitar executivos da, então, 20th Century Fox sobre a duração do primeiro longa, lançado em 2009.

“Disse algo que nunca havia dito a ninguém mais da indústria, [Eu disse] ‘Esse filme vai fazer dinheiro para caralho. E, quando fizer, vai ser tarde demais para você amá-lo. A hora para você amar o filme é agora. Então, não estou pedindo para você dizer algo que não sente, mas saiba que sempre saberei disso, não importa o quão elogioso você seja sobre o filme no futuro, quando ele fizer dinheiro’. Falei exatamente com essas palavras. ‘Você não vai poder voltar para mim, elogiar o filme ou fingir ser meu amigo e dizer que construímos isso juntos”, disse James que também afirmou que o executivo teria ficado levemente desvairado com sua resposta. Isso levou James a expulsá-lo de seu escritório.

“Falei para ele sair da porra do meu escritório. E ficou por isso mesmo”, completou James.

Na mesma entrevista, James ainda disse que Avatar: O Caminho da Água precisa arrecadar, pelo menos o mesmo valor que arrecadou no primeiro longa para se pagar, ou seja, US$2,9 bilhões nas bilheterias mundiais.

“A sequencia foi cara para caralho e é o pior case de negócios na história do cinema. O longa precisa ser terceira ou a quarta maior bilheteria da história para se pagar. Esse é o nosso limite.”, dise James.

O elenco conta com o retorno de Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder e Matt Gerald, além de também trazer novos nomes como Kate Winslet e Edie Falco, entre outros. Também foi revelado que a nova produção terá cerca de 3h e 10m de duração.

Caso Avatar: O Caminho da Água seja bem sucedido financeiramente, as sequências da saga chegam em 2024 ━Este tendo o primeiro ato já filmado━, 2026 e 2028, respectivamente.

Avatar: O Caminho da Água estreia no dia 15 dezembro.
