ECW Magazine: February 2000
ECW Pay-Per-View
ANARCHY RULZ
SEPT. 19, 1999 ODEUM THEATRE CHiCAGO, iL
by Dave Scherer
Extreme Championship Wrestling ushered in a new era at Anarchy Rulz on Sept. 19 at the Odeum Theatre in suburban Chicago, Ill.
Mike Awesome was crowned the new ECW world heavyweight champion in his federation return. He crashed the scheduled title match between Taz and Masato Tanaka and turned it into a three-way dance. Awesome’s victory ended Taz’s eight-month title reign.
Financially, it was a record evening for ECW. The company set an all-time record for fan attendance at an event (6,700) and gate revenue (drawing about $210,000). When the quality of the show is added into the equation - quite possibly the best pay-per-view any federation held in 1999 - it’s not difficult to understand why everyone left the Odeum smiling. The crowd made the great show even better with its vocal enthusiasm.
The announcing duo of Joey Styles and Cyrus The Virus did an outstanding job calling the action for the fans at home. There were even a few celebrities in attendance, as both Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins and Joe C. from Kid Rock were seen backstage.
Fans at the Odeum were warmed up with a dark match featuring Danny Doring and Amish Roadkill against Wild Bill Wiles and C.W. Anderson. The match was all Doring and Roadkill, as the young tandem punished their opponents before Roadkill pinned Wiles with a big splash from the top turnbuckle.
The show began for viewers at home with a video showing Tanaka arriving at the Odeum by car. As Steven Prazak asked him questions, which Tanaka ignored, Judge Jeff Jones interrupted them and told Tanaka he did not deserve to waltz back into ECW from Japan and get a world title shot. Tanaka pushed Jones to the side and left the scene. Jones then told the audience he had an “awesome” surprise for Tanaka.
lance storm (with dawn marie) vs. jerry lynn
This match was the technical masterpiece everyone expected it to be. Lance Storm, as usual, was accompanied by the beautiful Dawn Marie. Even though Lynn came to the ring with his bruised ribs taped up, the injury did not stop him from wrestling in his breathtaking style. In fact, Lynn was in control most of the match. After 10 minutes of action, both men attempted numerous pinfall attempts to no avail. Dawn Marie then involved herself in the match by handing Storm a chair, which he wedged in the corner between the ropes. Eventually, Lynn hit Storm with a DDT directly on the chair after it was taken out of the ropes. Despite that devastating move, Storm fought his way back and got the win when he rolled Lynn up for at the pin in 16:36.
chris chetti, nova and jazz vs. tony debit, simon diamond and tom marquez
Simon Diamond came to ringside and after making fun of Tom Marquez, challenged anyone from the back to come out and wrestle him. Jazz took him up on it, but Diamond weaseled his way out of the match and convinced Marquez to wrestle her instead. After Jazz quickly got the upper hand, Diamond and Tony Deito ran in and attacked her. Nova and Chris Chetti then came out and made the save for Jazz. It turned into a free-for-all when Amish Roadkill and Danny Doring entered the ring. Then, Rod Price, C.W. Anderson, Bill Wiles, Vito LoGrasso and Spanish Angel all charged the ring and joined the fray. This set the stage for New Jack, who appeared with a shopping cart full of weapons. New Jack attacked everyone and cleared the ring. He ended the match by using a staple gun on Price’s head and finished him off with a guitar.
yoshihiro tajiri vs. super crazy vs. little guido (with big sal e. graziano)
The next match was an example of a true ECW original, the three-way dance. Yoshihiro Tajiri, Super Crazy and Little Guido gave it everything they had in the ring, and out of the ring as well. In the early part of the match, the wrestlers teamed up with each other when it was to their advantage and attacked each other when it wasn’t. Guido was the first to be eliminated. He was pinned in 9:17 after Tajiri pasted him with a kick in the face while he was tied in the “Tree of Woe,” followed up with a moonsault by Crazy. Then, Tajiri and Crazy battled for a while until Tajiri nailed Crazy with a nasty brainbuster and got the pin in 14:37.
justin credible (with jason) vs. sabu (with bill alfonso)
After months of coming close to getting his hands on one half of the Impact Players, Sabu finally got Justin Credible in the ring. Before the match, Credible, with his manager Jason, showed referee Jim Molineaux restraining order he had to keep Sabu away from him. Molineaux agreed it was a valid legal document, but then told Credible that since this was ECW’s Anarchy Rulz, he was going to have to face Sabu anyway. When ring announcer Bob Artese refused to announce Credible as the winner of the match, Credible layed him out with a cane shot to the head. Then, the lights went out and when they came back on Sabu was in the ring. The match turned into everything fans have come to expect from Sabu. Sabu used chairs as launching pads and busted open Credible’s eye after putting him through a table. Jason tried to interfere but Sabu hit him with a legdrop. Credible used this distraction to cane Sabu. Credible finally got the pin in 14:04 after he hit “That’s Incredible” on Sabu.
taz (c) vs. mike awesome (with judge jeff jones) vs. masato tanaka for ecw world heavyweight title
After Taz and Masato Tanaka came to the ring, Awesome appeared in the crowd with Judge Jeff Jones. Taz took the microphone and dared Awesome to jump the barricade and come into the ring to fight him. ECW Executive Producer Paul Hayman, who was at ringside, tried to hold Awesome back. Taz announced he wanted to fight both Awesome and Tanaka, and Heyman granted his wish by turning the match into a three-way dance for the heavyweight title. Tanaka and Awesome teamed up to pin Taz in 2”00 after Awesome hit a frog splash from the top turnbuckle. Many of the ECW wrestlers were on the ramp during the match watching the bout. Tanaka and Awesome then renewed their feud - which they started in ECW rings during the summer of 1998 - by practically killing each other for the next 11 minutes. Awesome creamed Tanaka with an Awesome Bomb through a table and got the pin at 13:46. Taz then came back to ringside, kissed the belt and presented it to its new owner or a huge pop from the crowd.
tommy dreamer (with francine) and raven (c) vs. steve corino and rhino (with jack victory) for ecw world tag team title
Joel Gertner interviewed Tommy Dreamer, who was accompanied by Francine, about the status of both his injured back and the ECW tag team title, which he held with his enemy, Raven. Dreamer said he was not listening to the doctors anymore and that he was in Chicago to fight. Steve Corino came out with Rhino and Jack Victory and degraded Dreamer on the mic. Corino then sent Rhino in to attack Dreamer. Dreamer dominated Rhino until Corino came back to ringside with a ladder. Rhino got the upper hand and as he was about to put Dreamer away, Francine ran in and attacked him. Rhino slammed her to the mat. Then out of nowhere, Raven appeared and hit a DDT on Rhino. Raven and Dreamer then hit DDTs on Corino and Victory and pinned them both retaining the titles in 3:23.
rob van dam (with bill alfonso) vs. balls mahoney for ecw world television title
Before the main event, Axl Rotten welcomes Mike Awesome back to ECW and said he would like a shot at Awesome’s heavyweight title. Lance Storm, Justin Credible and Johnny Smith came out and said Rotten was out of line for asking for what was theirs. The Impact Players said they should get the first title shot at the new champion. When they ordered Rotten to rescind his challenge, Rotten chose to fight even though he was outnumbered. Balls Mahoney and Spike Dudley appeared and cleared the ring, with Mahoney knocking Smith out of his scheduled main event match against Rob Van Dam by nailing Smith in the head with a chairshot. Rotten then took the mic and said Van Dam needed a new opponent and suggested the champ put the title on the line against Mahoney. Van Dam, with manager Bill Alfonso, accepted the challenge. Mahoney and Van Dam brawled around ringside for the first five minutes of the match. Once back in the ring, they traded their extensive arsenal of moves, with both men scoring numerous near falls. Near the end, Mahoney hit Van Dam in the head with his signature “Anarchy Rulz” chair, but Alfonso broke the count when he entered the ring and hit Mahoney with a chair shot on Alfonso and prepared to hit Van Dam with another. However, Van Dam spring in the air and nailed Mahoney with the Van Daminator, getting a two count. Van Damn then climbed to the top rope and hit the five star frog splash to retain his title in 19:36. After the match, the men embraced and the crowd cheered.

LOTFD: Lightship 118 Overfalls
~sorry for delay - meant for July 7th, 2023~
(from: http://www.ibiblio.org/lighthouse/de.htm)
Lightship 118 (WLV-539) Overfalls
1938 (Rice Brothers, East Boothbay ME). Decommissioned 1972 (a decorative light is shown from the crow's nest). Single-masted steel lightship, length 116 ft (35.4 m), beam 25 ft (7.6 m). Anderson has a page for the ship with good photos, Terry Fielden has a 2019 closeup, a good 2014 photo is available, C.W. Bash has an August 2008 photo, and Google has a street view and a satellite view. WLV-539 was the last lightship built in the U.S. Though named now for the former Overfalls Shoal lightship station off Lewes, the ship actually served all of its career off New England, the last ten years of it as the Boston. A local support group, revived in 1999, took ownership of the vessel in December 2001. Engineering studies of the ship in early 2000 revealed it was in bad shape and needed to be moved onshore for preservation. Lighthouse Digest has a November 2003 article on these efforts. In the winter of 2004-05 the ships's electrical system was rebuilt and running lights were installed, as well as the light in the crow's nest. In October 2005 restoration efforts got a big boost from a $275,000 federal grant. In October 2008 the ship was successfully towed 275 mi (440 km) to the Colonna Shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia, for essential repairs. These repairs were complete by March 2009. In March 2009 the Delaware Department of Transportation made $400,000 of federal stimulus funds available for construction of a permanent dock for the ship. Work on that project was underway early in 2010 and the ship was ready to receive visitors by summer. In 2014 the restored pilot house of the former fishing charterboat Stephanie Anne was opened as a museum for the lightship. In November 2017 the ship was towed across Delaware Bay to the Dorchester shipyard for maintenance and repainting of the hull. Located on the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal at the end of Shipcarpenter Street in Lewes. Site open, vessel open for guided tours Thursday through Sunday from Memorial Day weekend (late May) through Labor Day weekend (early September), and Friday through Sunday the rest of September and in early October; group tours can also be arranged out of season. Owner/site manager: Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation . ARLHS USA-573.

This was probably the most remarkable trip for our household of 4 – an absolute privilege that exceeded each expectation. Meet Corey G. Lewis, The Dude Who’s Bringing Grunge Back
~By Jamie LaRose~
Tumblr media
Art by Ben House
With the new album sinking into our consciousness, 'Deathspiration' (2018) by The Misery Men invokes the necessity to dig a bit deeper into the creative processes behind its craft. I had the chance to follow-up with Corey G. Lewis, mastermind of the music, and take a glimpse at the band's evolution as portrayed by sound. Deathspiration was recorded and mixed by Steve Jones of Ancient Warlocks at Big Sound Productions in Seattle, and features Jones as drummer.
Deathspiration by The Misery Men
Deathspiration by The Misery Men
The intro track is reminiscent of reflections, leading into a blasting presence of a second track. This album seems to tell a diverse story, can you explain some of the inspiration behind Deathspiration?
Well the intro track is sort of an homage to Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack. I’m also really into Dylan Carlson and EARTH. Before I discovered Earth, I’d always described The Misery Men as, Western Doom Noir. That’s evolved into me describing it as Stone Drone. Nevertheless it’s reminiscent of the space between the notes, and the chaos that occurs. The song Sughrue is about C.W. Sughrue, a character from the book Last Good Kiss by the late great James Crumley, also an old friend. Sughrue is a Private Dick that goes off looking for missing woman. “Like a train” barreling down the highway, from Montana to Mexico.
Oh, most importantly, the inspiration behind Deathspiration is the evolution of me as a human. The cathartic shedding of skin. "Harnessing the Darkness" and riding the waves. Sometimes I feel we might be desperate to reach death, to know the truths, while we attempt to be inspired to live life, as we pass through all the adversity, and perspiring blood, sweat, and tears in these moments of our existence.
Deathspiration by The Misery Men
Do you have any secrets of sound to share? What types of techniques present The Misery Men persona?
My secret sound really is simplicity, and the ghost of Leo Fender haunting my amp. I run a 70’s Music Man 112 RP 65-watt amp with an EV bass speaker, through a 2x12 THD Cab, with a phaser pedal, and a Little Big Muff. A wall of fuzz, that is grizzly, meaty, and punchy. I don’t really try to be the tone guy, but I get more compliments about my tone than anything else.
Deathspiration by The Misery Men
"Night Creeps In" presents itself to me as the vertex of the Deathspiration story, it feels ritualistic and defining. Are there any rituals you perform while in the writing process?
This song in particular was written after a girl I was dating for only a week, told me she was going to kill herself. It was pretty heavy, and at the time she texted me, I was walking past Lone Fir Cemetery and wrote her, “sometimes the night creeps in, looking wretched weak and thin. Smiling with its meathook grin.” It was a very heavy experience. When I wrote this song about seven years ago, I was just really getting deep into Dax Riggs of Acid Bath. He’s definitely had a big impact on my music writing since moving to Portland.
Deathspiration by The Misery Men
Aside from the release of Deathspiration, are there any other exciting current happenings with The Misery Men?
We played at Dante’s not long ago with Chris Newman Deluxe Combo. Chris is quintessential to the Portland rock scene and to the whole Pacific Northwest in general. He is famous for his band Napalm Beach, who released their first album in 1981. Without Napalm Beach, The Wipers, and Dead Moon, well Seattle “Grunge” just wouldn’t sound the same. We might all still be playing Hair Metal!
Officially, Deathspiration has been out since last December, but this week it will launch on all digital platforms worldwide. This fall around September or October, expect a new two-part album to drop digitally, recorded by Witch Mountain and The Skull’s own Rob Wrong! It’ll feature 3-4 different local bass players and a couple local drummers, all guitars and vocals have been recorded, and bass/drums will be done by July/August. So far, we've got interest from bass players Billy Anderson (yes, the famous Sleep producer), Matt Howl (Mammoth Salmon), Wayne Boucher (Troll), and Jaden Mcginiss (Legendary Peavy owner, Doorman, Boudicca). All of this will be recorded in Rob’s basement, the same basement Elliott Smith practiced in.
I decided that my second album needed to be done sooner than later, after the 1st was seven years in the making. Deathspiration was recorded in Seattle with Ancient Warlocks drummer Steve Jones, I’m very happy with the way it turned out, it was analog with no filters, no frills, just my raw intensity. The second though I feel needs to be done here in Portland, it is after all according to Greg Sage, DoomTown. Unlike the first one, it’ll be all digital, but still raw and real, capturing my live performance sound. I’m also likely going to have a variety of drummers on the album playing different songs, perhaps even some legendary Portland drummers!
This week I begin practicing with a new drummer for two upcoming gigs. On Saturday, July 6th, we'll be playing with Chronoclops and Stereo Creeps from Seattle at Misdemeanor Meadows in Portland. It's a free show. Then on Friday, July 26th, The Misery Men will be rocking Gil's Speakeasy for a $5 show that includes The Sleer and Breath. I'm Working on gigs for August on through the Fall.
Tumblr media
Do you have any memories of childhood that are notably similar to your current state of mind? What type of things about your childhood self were spot-on about who you become? What was your favorite toy?
I knew I’d always wanted to be a Rock n’ Roller or an actor in films. Like pretty much as long as I could remember. I dressed up almost every Halloween as a Punk Rocker in the '80s. My first concert of grand scale was Poison and Warrant 1989, in Bozeman, Montana -- I was in 5th grade. That show changed my life. I also dug rocks in my grandparent’s backyard, but not for pleasure -- my grandfather took advantage of child labor! I’m a rocker through and through. I think I’ve followed my dreams pretty spot on.
Favorite toys were probably GI Joe’s, Star Wars, or my SEGA Genesis. I also built wood swords from fence posts and painted them with finger nail polish as a kid. Think I may have accidentally got high!
What was the moment when you could feel music has become a part of your life? How has writing music helped you, and those around you?
Well, ever since I could remember music was a part of my life. Listening to my mom’s old tapes and records as a kid really impacted me. I was always surrounded by music, my grandparents owned a Rock n’ Roll bar I’m the ‘60s, '70s, and '80s, called The Wrangler Bar in Livingston, MT. It’s featured in the film Rancho Deluxe about some wild young cattle rustlers, starring Jeff Bridges, and Sam Waterson. There’s a scene with Jimmy Buffett playing "Livingston Saturday Night" while Jeff and Sam play Pong. I’ve played that same machine as a kid! There was always a jukebox, I loved playing Jefferson Starship's "We Built This City," Joan Jett's "I Love Rock n’ Roll," Ozzy's "Bark at the Moon," Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Hell Is For Children," and Billy Squire's "The Stroke"!
In 7th and 8th grades, I really was into The Doors, The Beatles, Hendrix, and I was in a English class for kids who couldn’t really focus on reading Lord Of The Rings. In this class our teacher would have us listen to our favorite music at home, then with the feelings we got, write our own poetry. I often listened to Hendrix, especially Axis: Bold As Love and Electric LadyLand, so there were plenty of references to fantasy in my early lyrics. This really helped me learn to become a lyricist, and take an interest in poetry. Most importantly, it gave me an outlet. Around the same time, I got heavy into Henry Rollins. When I saw the video for "Liar" with Hank all painted red, I thought, “I wanna be that guy!” I bought Get in The Van and it became my Bible. All the while I was into Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden.
Tumblr media
Is there a way to describe when you feel most productive or most relaxed? How is your state of mind best explained while writing music?
I’m most productive when I feel inspired. Or when the Sun is out and I’m well rested. I like the Sun, except in extreme heat, then I wanna murder the Sun. I was born at night, so I’m a Moon child. I definitely get more inspired and productive writing at night. A few years ago when I was reworking an old song that turned out to be Harness The Darkness, I took a wee bit of LSD or mushrooms -- I’m more of a microdose kind of guy -- found myself going down some deep wormholes to connect a lot of dots that would go on to make up the six verses of the song, that I eventually dropped into four, because it was the most exhausting song to play! I’m a Beatnik kid. I got into the Beat style of writing early on. So, letting the stream of consciousness come flowing out seems to work well for me. I can keep a pretty decent rhyme or off rhyme too.
What is the most peculiar thing that anyone has ever said to you?
Hmmmm. Can you keep a secret? From experience, always tell them no, because sometimes people will lay some heavy shit on you, and maybe you didn’t want to be that person to carry their burden. I’m not a Priest, or a therapist, sometimes it’s fine to listen to friends, but there’s some things you can’t unhear or unsee!
Do you have a message for the universe?
I call it the "Megaverse," as coined by quantum physicist Leonard Susskind -- but my message is to be real, be compassionate, be loving, be forgiving, be understanding, be courageous, be ever evolving, and in the words of E.T.: “Beeeeee Gooooooddd.”

Blu-ray Review: Happy Birthday to Me
Tumblr media
Happy Birthday to Me is an interesting entry in the slasher oeuvre. Released during the subgenre's golden age in 1981, it was written in the wake of Halloween’s surprise success, but it wasn't produced until after Friday the 13th hit. As a result, Happy Birthday to Me draws influence from Halloween's suspense-driven horror set pieces but pays them off with gory kills a la Friday the 13th.
Produced in Canada by the same folks who made My Bloody Valentine (which was filmed after but released first), Happy Birthday to Me boasts a bigger budget (an estimated CAD 3,500,000) than most '80s slashers. Director J. Lee Thompson (Cape Fear, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes) brings an air of class to the affair, with good production value, a couple of impressive stunts, and handsome cinematography by Miklós Lente (Screwballs). Thomas R. Burman - who went on to work on everything from Halloween III: Season of the Witch to Scrooged to The Tracey Ullman Show to Grey's Anatomy - handles the special effects.
Tumblr media
The story revolves around a clique of popular high school seniors, known throughout their private academy as the Top Ten. One of the elite group's members, Ginny (Melissa Sue Anderson, Little House on the Prairie), is planning her 18th birthday party when her friends begin disappearing one by one. The plot culminates in a slapdash ending that aims to be a shocking revelation, but it lacks any meaningful build-up. (It's reported that the "twist" ending was written during production to replace a more standard conclusion.)
Anderson's choice to star in the film seems like an attempt to avoid being typecast by her Little House on the Prairie persona. The script - written by John C.W. Saxton (Class of 1984), Peter Jobin, and Timothy Bond (Friday the 13th: The Series), with uncredited work from John Beaird (My Bloody Valentine) - gets a tad melodramatic, but it gives Anderson a fairly meaty role by slasher standards. More than a typical final girl, her sympathetic character also struggles with repressed memories of her traumatic past.

The cast also includes Glenn Ford (Superman) as Ginny's psychiatrist, Lawrence Dane (Scanners) and Sharon Acker (Point Blank) as her parents, and Frances Hyland (The Changeling) as the head of the academy. Other members of the Top Ten are played by Tracey E. Bregman (The Young and the Restless), Jack Blum (Meatballs), Matt Craven (Jacob's Ladder), Lenore Zann (X-Men), Lesleh Donaldson (Curtains), and Lisa Langlois (Class of 1984).
Happy Birthday to Me briefly held the distinction of being the highest grossing Canadian film until Porky's surpassed it a few months later. It's an above-average slasher, although it overstays its welcome at 111 minutes. While I appreciate the character building - something that many slashers lack - many of the characters are nothing more than irredeemable brats waiting to be killed. With so much fat that should have been trimmed, the pacing suffers.

Mill Creek Entertainment has reissued Happy Birthday to Me on Blu-ray with a new slipcover that looks like a VHS box. I'm not a slipcover enthusiastic, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't geek out a little over these. Mill Creek initially released a bunch of titles (including Silent Rage, Last Action Hero, and Krull) with them exclusively at Walmart, but they're beginning to hit other retailers this month. Beneath the slipcase is a bare-bones Blu-ray, so it's not worth an upgrade if you own an earlier edition - but if Happy Birthday to Me isn’t already in your collection, the cool artwork and low price point make it an easy buy.
Happy Birthday to Me will be released on Blu-ray on January 15 via Mill Creek Entertainment.

Many people have sighed for the 'good old days' and regretted the 'passing of the horse,' but today, when only those who like horses own them, it is a far better time for horses.

From Bad to Awful
From Bad to Awful
In the previous issue, New Yorker film critic John Mosher examined the morals of pre-code, “underworld films” such as Edward G. Robinson’s Little Caesar. Mosher didn’t seem all that impressed with these new gangster films, that is, until James Cagney lent his talents to The Public Enemy.
