Hello, everybody! I’m the Queen of the Universe

I am here with an exciting announcement: Toxitown is releasing their next project!

This album, entitled I Am Getting Out Of Burley, was made at the same time as the recording of Endowment House. It’s less of a music album and more of a short story with musical accompaniment. Sonically, expect experimental beats and melancholic synths. Lyrically, focuses I Am Getting Out Of Burley revolves around a man and his uncomfortable relationship to small town living.

There’s not a long wait this time. I Am Getting Out Of Burley is coming out this Friday, March 31, 2023.

But that’s not the only news!

Toxitown is performing a little piano concert tomorrow on the internet as apart of the Voicemail piece. It will be available to stream on YouTube March 29, 2023, and available for download on bandcamp soon after.

So maybe I need to share what we found so interesting about the design of Canberra as a city. First it was done through a competition, won by a couple (well actually the husband had to give his wife credit). The design was developed based on the intersection of two “mountains” (foothills) and the river. Then a triangle was drawn with the parliament at the apex, the business district and protective forces at the other points. Within the triangle housed a celebration of Australian people’s achievements - national library, national science centre, national art gallery, reconciliation place. The base of the triangle was a gathering place for the people who were intended to be at the same elevation as the parliament. The river was to be flooded to provide a lake as a recreational space for more gathering opportunities.

The design implementation was delayed due to controversy and two world wars. The original plan was modified but essentially Canberra follows their original design. There is no clear background to its name except speculation that one farmer called his sheep farm in the area, Canberry. There was a suggestion of a severely distorted aboriginal name but I’m not buying it.

We have enjoyed the easy access to the river/lake (Lake Burley Griffin) and the paved tree lined walk. It’s rarely crowded but well used by pedestrians, bikers and scooter riders. There’s a single fountain shooting water (Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet) 152 meters up and a peninsula (Aspen Island), sailboats, river cruises and lots of green space (Commonwealth and Kings Parks). We’re lodging in the business district beside the huge University space and there’s ongoing construction of another leg of the rapid transit. Motorized scooters on demand are everywhere with so many paved paths. Population of around 500,000 and average home price around $1million.

Every time we cross either bridge, we wonder why no one has thought to operate little ferries to transport people across the water and save our feet. Even the docks are already there. Hmmm wondering - maybe a retirement gig.
