So this mornings ride was a nice 59k route with rolling hills.
It starts with a nice easy roll out of Exeter towards Broadclyst. The roads on this first leg of the route aren’t the best, they are very rough with a few pot holes.
Once you have gone through Broadclyst you go past Budlake and you are riding on the road that is used for the first half of the Wednesday 10k TT. It is quite a fast road as you go past Quad world heading towards Cullompton.
Once you get to the Cullompton roundabout you need to head all the way around and take the third exit. Making your way through Cullompton town centre and head out towards Willand.
As you approach Diggerland you arrive at the first little test on this route. The Willand climb. This isn’t a very long climb, only about 160 metres long at just under 6%. So you should be able to keep it in the big ring and sprint up it.
Once through Willand you come to a roundabout. you want to take a sharp left (1st exit) towards Halberton. This is a pretty easy section of the route as you head towards Tiverton. You go past Blundles school and then have to negotiate a number of roundabouts heading towards Bickleigh.
Now its time to put the hammer down. This part of the route can be pretty fast as   you go from Tiverton to bickleigh. As you arrive at Bickleigh you have to go over a narrow bridge so look out for cars coming the other way. The scenery here is very beautiful.
It is now slightly up hill for a while as you head towards Silverton. As you approach Silverton you reach the top of the uphill part. You are now on another fast section as you wind your way towards Stoke Cannon.
Head through Stoke Cannon and follow the road around to the right as you head into the trees. Take the road on the left and you reach the only real test of this ride the climb up skirmish hill. This hill has been used when the tour of Britain came through this way. it is also used annually for the Exeter Wheelers hillclimb. As of writing this the current KOM is Team Sky rider David Lopez from the 2014 Tour of Britain. With an eye watering, leg burning, lung bursting 3 minutes and 58 seconds.
When you reach the top you wind your way down and out of a little dip. You then take the left hand road (Rosebarn), for a very fast downhill section. Take it easy at the bottom as you have a sharp left which ends abruptly at a junction. Go down towards the roundabout and take the first exit onto Prince Charles road. This is slightly downhill, so if you put the hammer down you can reach some very good speeds.
The end of Prince Charles road is another roundabout. Take the first exit and follow the road over the small hill. Take the second right which comes just after the zebra crossing and follow that road all the way to the traffic lights.
At the lights take a right heading towards Exeter city centre. After the railway bridge you head up hill on Polsloe road. Once at the top of the hill you follow the road back downhill and into Exeter.
That is the end of this nice rolling 59K route. We road it today on what was quite a nice spring morning without too much wind and the temperatures were quite pleasant.
Until next time....
Ciao J
