Sacred Heart Church, Blackpool
You can’t get enough of Blackpool. There is a famous tower, pleasure beach, amusement parks, piers, promenade, casinos, and much more. However, if you want to take a break from this overwhelming funfair and explore a hidden gem in Blackpool, then visit Sacred Heart Church.
As you start walking into the town centre from North Pier, you will find a small Victorian building on your way. From the outside, it looks like a simple religious building but inside, a stunning Gothic Revival style of architecture is waiting for you. Constructed in 1857, this beautiful Grade II listed building was the first Roman Catholic church built in Blackpool.
Edward Pugin, son of Augustus Welby Pugin (famous architect) designed the original chapel. The wonderful roof lantern is truly an architectural gem. The lantern at the top of the cross is 32m high and 6m in diameter. The building is built of brick with stone cladding. The whole design is so pleasing to the eye and the stone facade and slate roof make for some great photographic opportunities.
The church is a small building, and it will not take you long to look around. It is still an active church and most definitely well worth checking out if you are taking a stroll on Talbot Street in Blackpool.
Sacred Heart Church is just an 11-minute walk away from Bluewaters Budget Hotel in Blackpool. Become a member and explore Blackpool with us! Gold Members get exclusive discounts on stays, local attractions, restaurants, bars, and much more. Write to us at [email protected] for more details.

Thank you, Gareth! I began working on this blog thirteen years ago today, or on 25th February 2011, or another day in February 2011, I'm not sure exactly as I have a tendency to delete posts in the editing process. It was definitely February, though, and the reason I started it was because I was teaching myself about the history of art from scratch, and considering studying for a Master's degree (as if!) in Art Gallery and Museum Studies at Manchester University. I even attended the Open Day. (It entailed a lovely three-day holiday staying in a hotel in Manchester city centre with my then-boyfriend, Joseph, which happily coincided with the festivities for the Chinese New Year). It was the same time as when local councils were having to slash budgets, and services such as libraries were being butchered. Ordinarily, my contract as a library assistant would have been renewed - previously, a job in the library was a job for life if you wanted - it was 'safe' - but in 2010 the Conservative-led government implemented a fiscal policy of austerity, and I lost my job in January 2011 as a result.
Not that I was bothered. To the contrary, I was delighted. Or rather, relieved. I found the job very stressful. Who would have thought that working in a library could destroy every shred of confidence you didn't even have in the first place! No, I was a happy bunny to be out of there, especially with my £800+ redundancy pay. But I did wonder what the hell I was going to do next. I quickly realised the Master's idea wasn't for me, and neither was an Open University degree, but that I still had this self-motivated interest in art and history which meant I could research on my own without trying to gain a qualification. This type of studying was a hobby - it was for fun. It was like taking a 'chill pill', helping me to focus my mind on something else other than my anxieties.
2011 was a good year for me. Joe and I visited several places in Britain while I attended job interviews (Shetland was the highlight) and he went to away games (his team, Blackpool, had been promoted to the Premier League in May 2010 and so were playing all the big boys, e.g. Arsenal or West Ham, something like that, I don't know! I was there when they won at Wembley, though).
So, yeh, I started this blog thirteen years ago. There were some years I didn't do much work on it, although maybe more than it appears now as I have deleted stuff along the way, and there is still more to delete and definitely lots to edit. It will probably never get completed, but I'm not bothered. I've always said it is, like me, a work in progress. That's the thing about writing - you learn as you go on, change your mind, find out what your opinions are, or aren't, etc. It's all about learning, thinking, caring, and sometimes it's about not caring. This is *my* space to write about whatever I please, even if I make mistakes, or reveal my ignorance, or change my opinion.
Sod what anyone else thinks!
Happy 13th birthday, pasted past!!

Used School Buses Finding A Used Bus for Sale
Before purchasing a new school bus it is important to consider all of your options. If you are working within the confines of a tight budget it may be in your best interest to look into purchasing used school buses. There are several businesses that specialize in the selling of used school buses.
Tumblr media
Several companies located on the Internet are dedicated to providing customers with excellent transportation products and ongoing customer support. When purchasing used school buses choose a Company that allows the customer to continually stop in for required maintenance and parts. Some Companies will even keep customers updated on the latest developments in the field of transportation.
The type of used buses for schools that are available for purchase range in both size and price. Most used school buses that are purchased can be customized to operate in a smaller, urban area as part of the public transit system. The smaller, customized units are great for colleges, churches, hospitals, retirement communities, hotels, airports and resort areas.
School buses - used or new - can be customized to have a wheelchair lift which is ideal for the safe transport of individuals who have physical disabilities. These types of smaller school buses can be used as part of a special transportation division.
One of the biggest bus Companies is Sonny Merryman, Inc. Sonny Merryman is a bus Company that is affiliated with both the Startrans Bus Division of the Supreme Corporation and DaimlerChrysler Commercial Buses of North America. The types of used school buses sold are customized buses, school buses, shuttle buses, low floor city transit buses and other transportation vehicles.
On top of purchasing used school buses a customer can also purchase Freightliner Sprinter Vans. These vans are made by Mercedes Benz and are the perfect vocational service vehicle. These cargo vans and passenger vans are used for transporting a small group of people or goods to customers or carrying equipment.
The price of used school buses ranges from two-thousand dollars to over seven-thousand dollars. One can purchase a used school bus that is powered with either gasoline or diesel fuel. Most of the buses for sale were made in the 1990's. Before you purchase a used bus for the school, make sure that the bus Company offers some sort of warranty. This will ensure that you are buying a reliable product that is guaranteed for a specific period of time.
Most used school bus Companies offer to ship products around the world. This is the best way for a company or individual working within a budget to purchase several used school buses. There are numerous bus Companies that are located on the Internet. Another option is to purchase a used school bus from an auction. There are auctions held throughout the United States. Save yourself thousands of dollars by purchasing top-quality, used school buses.

Five years since meeting Jenna Coleman
Today (Sept. 26) marks the 5th anniversary of the broadcast of Series 9′s The Witch’s Familiar, but for me it’s an even more special anniversary as it is also the 5th anniversary of me getting to meet Jenna Coleman at the Edmonton Expo.
I drove the 3 hours from Calgary to Edmonton early in the morning and of course hours more lining up followed once I got there! Jenna was, sadly, a bit late (not too bad compared to others and not necessarily her fault). But when she finally arrived, I remember how tiny she looked. But she was all smiles, of course! After the Abbey Road Dalek photo shoot, Jenna went on a bit of a promotional/convention tour for the next week or so that also included convention stops in the US and an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s show. And she mentioned to someone at the con that she was about to go into preproduction for Victoria (which started filming about a month later).
I got a photo signed, of course! And during my 30 seconds had a nice little chat. I LOVED how she said my name with that Blackpool accent of hers. The main thing we talked about was the Abbey Road Dalek photo shoot from exactly one week before. She apparently wasn’t aware that a behind-the-scenes video had been circulated by the BBC, or that a webcam down the street had captured the action too. She said she’d have to check them out.
And with that it was time to let someone else meet Jenna. Sadly, I was too shy to have ordered a photo op, and I had to be back in Calgary that night so going to her panel the next day (Sunday) didn’t happen, and I regret missing out on both. But it was fun. That same convention had a few other performers I got to meet, though the only other one I got an autograph from that trip was Natalia Tena of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones fame. I’m surprised I didn’t get more that trip; looking back, though, I know one reason I didn’t get more was I was soon to go on vacation and I didn’t want to blow the budget. Indeed, I watched “Before the Flood” in a hotel room in Vancouver, B.C.
By the way, I only found out that Jenna was appearing at the Edmonton Expo on the Thursday before the convention, so this was definitely a fast turnaround! But a good memory.
I eventually got to meet Peter Capaldi in Calgary in 2017, and for anyone who cares, other Who-related convention meets (and autographs) for me have been Karen Gillan (2014; saw Matt Smith but an organizational snafu with how “top-draw” photos were being sold that year prevented me from getting a pic signed), John Barrowman (2016), Billie Piper (2016), Mark Sheppard aka Canton Delaware III (2016), Catherine Tate (2019). I was also set up to get an autograph from Alex Kingston at I think the 2016 Edmonton Expo but she had to cancel at the last minute due to a passport issue (not telling tales out of school, this was announced). Sadly, the year Sylvester McCoy came to Calgary I was unable to go due to family matters.
There are more important things that I’d like to see get back to normal once the current insanity ends. But these conventions are highlights for me - things to look forward to - and while, sure, it’s cool to tune in for an online Q&A and see what Jenna’s living room looks like and you can still order the autographs, it’s not the same as actually being able to say you had a chat with John Rhys-Davies about your career, or watching Gwendoline Christie give a critique of the Brianne of Tarth cosplay the person in line in front of you wore. Or seeing Barrowman go ga-ga over someone’s baby. Or overhearing Malcolm McDowell talking to the person in line ahead of you about the rare Clockwork Orange soundtrack LP he’d just signed. Or shaking hands with Peter Mayhew. Or seeing Karen play peek-a-boo with Matt through the curtains.
I could list many more examples of this that you just don’t get from online. One of my favourites is Liz Vassey, who was a CSI cast member but is also well remembered as Captain Liberty in the first live-action version of The Tick, remarking that I looked like an old boyfriend of her’s! Hopefully that was meant as a compliment!

Our experienced wedding planners are highly applauded for designing, managing and delivering events to suit all individual requirements, no matter what the budget size, or theme. The light levels in the venue to hire are exceptionally low but a good professional photographer should be capable of magical results in there.

Back in the 70’s, I remember my two siblings and I being told by Mum that she had booked our family’s first foreign destination package holiday.  The destination…Salou, Spain.  As you can probably imagine, we were happy giddy children running around the living room, our arms outstretched; pretending to be aeroplanes….vrooooom, neeeooooown!  Our usual family ‘holidays’ were day trips to Blackpool Pleasure Beach or the Cala Gran Caravan Park in Fleetwood, and even those trips were few and far between.  So, our first trip to foreign lands booked, and we only had a year to wait…a whole year!  Mum worked three jobs that year just to pay for the package holiday.  Family Holidays Have Changed Since The 70’s and a package holiday was the only way to go, booking DIY was relatively unheard of.
A packed beach at Blackpool Pleasure beach in the 1970’s
DRESS TO IMPRESS
The year passed, and in the weeks leading to travel day we were dragged from pillar-to-post buying new clothes.  Travel day arrived and I remember getting dressed into my new clothes.  Wouldn’t want to look like the scruffy council estate street urchins that we were, no siree…posh clobber all the way!  Bescoby’s (catalogue shop) finest at that!  Manchester Airport was packed and the aircraft was enormous and noisy!  The engine noise was soon drowned out by the rowdy passengers (mum and step-dad included), many of whom were bladdered and singing at the top of their lungs….”oh, this year I’m off to sunny Spain, Y Viva España”!  The stench of alcohol was overwhelming and cigarette smoke filled the cabin, inside the aeroplane it looked like a foggy day!
Travelling with British Airtours at Manchester Airport
DO YOU JEST, NO I JOUST
There’s so much that I can recall from our first foreign holiday.  One awful memory is going to the beach and having our white freckled skin plastered with sun cream.  We looked like three ‘child-sized’ abominable snowmen on the beach but we didn’t care, we were on our package holiday!  There were vendors walking the beach with live animals; baby chimps, snakes, lizards etc, each trying to get tourists to have a photo.  My best memory was being taken to a Medieval Castle to watch Knights joust to win the hand of a Fair Maiden!  Upon entry to the castle we were given a paper ‘crown’ and a plastic ‘chalice‘ before being shown to our bench table.  We dined on chicken and potatoes and drank juice.  No plates, a whole roast chicken was slammed down onto the table by servers who were dressed like peasants.  Definitely no FSA hygiene rating in the good ol’ days!  Quite a scary experience for a child if I’m being honest, scary…but an indelible memory.  Plus we got to meet and have a photograph taken with the King and Queen of the Castle before we left.
Trying to win the hand of a Fair Maiden in a jousting contest
PILOTS ARE POOR, LET’S HAVE A WHIP-ROUND
Another memory I have of the 70’s family holiday was gathered on the return flight home.  I recall a drunken man, walking up and down the aisle with a colourful sombrero souvenir on his head and a large ‘piñata’ style donkey under his arm; collecting money from the passengers to hand to the pilot after landing.  Oh yes, and the tipsy travellers clapping and cheering once the plane landed and ground to a stop!  Heaven only knows why?  That’s the pilots job…take off, fly and land the plane!  To this day I am still baffled as to why ‘collections’ became a common sight on planes in the 70’s and 80’s.  It’s not as if pilots didn’t get paid a decent salary surely?  And, on the souvenir front, I also remember my Nana bringing home a plastic donkey that she filled with cheap cigarettes. Pull both of the donkey’s ears, the tail lifted and a cigarette popped out of its bum hole!  Highly amusing to a child, but also strangely weird!
I’m not an ass, I’m a donkey!
THE WORLD WIDE WEB IS WONDERFUL
Back in the 70s, booking via a Travel Agent on the High Street was the only option for Mum when she was booking our first family holiday.  Nowadays we can surf the WWW discovering far flung destinations.  The ease of comparing thousands of hotels and reading every Review (good and bad) of the hotel or campsite that you have your heart set on, is, well…easy!  Booking a holiday is much more convenient in the 21st Century, especially as we have so much tech and so many apps to assist our travels.  Mummy often recounts how, in the 80’s; her Mum and Dad planned their 3 week family trip to America and Walt Disney World Resort.  No Google maps or Booking.com in sight and once at the destination…no sat-nav in the hire car!  I shudder at the thought!  I get lost in Asda’s car park let alone travelling the globe!
Lynne (age 9) meets Mickey Mouse at Disney World, Florida
LET’S GO TO SPAIN AND EAT A FULL ENGLISH
In this day and age we are truly spoilt that we very rarely experience ‘new foods’ whilst travelling.  The exotic fruits that you would only see on your foreign summer holidays are now stacked high on our supermarket shelves.  Albeit in the 70’s I’m sure that we, just like the other British holidaymakers in Spain; were still tucking into a full English fry.  Let’s go to Spain and eat a full English…now that makes sense…not!  And, just to make things clear; a fry isn’t a proper fry unless it has Heinz Baked Beans and HP Brown Sauce!  Eggs, sunny side up or over easy, what’s your preference?  Thankfully our tastebuds and sense of adventure have evolved since the 70’s.  Nowadays we love nothing more than exploring a region and sampling the local delicacies when we venture to a new country.
A hearty fry, always a great start to the day
SELFIE’S ARE MORE ANTI THAN SOCIAL
Think back, how on Earth did we survive a holiday without letting our friends, family and anyone else on our Facebook ‘friends’ list know what a fabulous time we were having!  Today, it’s so easy…lie by the pool with a cocktail in hand, snap that selfie (might take more than one attempt and a multitude of facial expressions) and share to all 7,936 friends (are they really ALL friends) on Social Media.  It’s a holiday, put your phone away and stop being anti-social!  But make sure you get that ‘instaworthy’ picture first!
Strike a pose…vogue
PHOTO ALBUMS GALORE
Back in the 70’s you came home with a couple reels of camera film that you would have to wait for a week to be processed in your local chemist.  You would then spend hours arranging your glossy snaps into photo albums and annotating who, what and where…nightmare!  Friends and family would avoid calling to the house for months fearing a 7 hour session of you reminiscing whilst showing them your ‘amazing holiday’ snaps!  Now, when we arrive back home; a quick 10 minute ‘holiday’ conversation is all that’s needed because your friends and family have already seen the pictures and read about the holiday on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and every other social media outlet that there is.
Photo albums for reminiscing about holidays
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
Of course the cost of travel has also changed drastically since Mum worked 3 jobs to take us on our family’s first foreign package holiday to España.  2019 and we are in the era of low budget airlines where you can pick up a flight for €10 and sometimes less!  Search engines have become our new BFF and sites like Skyscanner, Booking.com and Trivago allow us to hone our skills at searching for a bargain holiday to a luxury destination.  No longer does cheap mean bad, or ‘you get what you pay for’.  Credit was non-existent, there was no ‘stick it on the credit card’ and pay it off after the holiday, holidays were paid for with hard-earned cold, hard cash!  I remember vividly counting and bagging my saved pocket money then taking it to the Post Office to exchange to Spanish currency, Pesetas, or ‘potatoes‘ as we called them!  And I still have some of them from the 70’s, as well as a stamp.
IT’S THE MEMORIES THAT MATTER MOST
One thing that hasn’t changed since the 1970’s is that people still travel to make memories.  Whether those memories and moments are captured in one simple 35mm photograph, or by 10 burst shots on your newest high-tech smartphone, we are all still trying to make the memories that our parents did back in the 70’s.

Rooms are smart and quirky — if your budget permits, choose a superior double with a terrace overlooking the city. Music events are hosted in the ground floor La Loca Music Bar & Lounge. Doubles from £49; breakfast £8 (mosaichouse.com).
Botel Albatros
Capital ideas: Stay in the quirky Botel Albatross, which offers 86 basic, wood-panelled rooms
Anchored on Vltava River, not far from Charles Bridge and the Old Town, with views towards Prague Castle, this boat hotel, built in 1969, offers 86 basic, wood-panelled rooms, a restaurant and a top-deck terrace, ideal for a cool beer (£1.25) before dinner. B&B doubles from £54 (botelalbatros.cz).
What to see and do
Museums aplenty
Prague Cards (£55 for two days, praguecard.com) offer free or discounted entry to 80 different museums and attractions, including the National Museum, the Czech Museum of Music, Powder Tower and the Old Royal Palace, former home of Bohemian kings.
Although not covered by the Prague Card, don’t miss the Museum of Communism (£10, muzeumkomunismu.cz) for an evocative reflection of life during the Communist era.
Walk and learn
Prague is easily explored on foot — but pack a pair of comfy shoes to cope with the cobbled streets. If you want to splash out on a scholar-led three- hour walk, try Insight Cities (insightcities.com).
Big on beer
As Czechs drink more beer than any other nation – try craft beers in the Old Town
Home of Pilsner, Czechs drink more beer than any other nation — which is not surprising given it’s as cheap as water in bars and restaurants. Sample craft beer in the Old Town at U Kunstatu (ukunstatu.cz), a 12th-century former palace. Or soak up the atmosphere in the Old Town Square.
Climb the tower
IT looks like Blackpool Tower, but, apparently, the 63.5m-tall Petrin Lookout Tower, built in 1891 on Petrin Hill, was actually inspired by Paris’s Eiffel Tower. Its 299 steps are worth climbing to see sweeping views of the city. It costs £5.20, or it’s free with a Prague Card.
Head for the castle
Don’t let the crowds put you off, Prague Castle — among the largest in the world — is a must. Dating from the ninth century, it comprises palaces, churches, fortifications and manicured gardens. A full ticket is £12 and lasts two days (hrad.cz).
Pack a picnic
Prague is blessed with myriad parks away from the hubbub — perfect for a picnic. Grab some food at a supermarket or local bakery and sit under the shade of an ancient tree in 250-acre Stromovka Park, or watch boats gliding along the Vltava River.
Where to eat
Eska
A former fabric factory, this restaurant pays homage to the building’s past with exposed brickwork, girders and pipework. Traditional Czech dishes given a modern makeover is the name of the game here. Tuck in to cabbage schnitzel, mushrooms and vegetables for £9.60. Address: Pernerova 49 (eska.ambi.cz)
Lehka Hlava
Choose to dine under the stars or under a lizard perched on a leaf at this veggie restaurant, thanks to impressive ceiling artwork. Hidden on Prague’s shortest street in a 500-year-old former teahouse, it’s a favourite of locals. Try a naked seitan burger with potatoes and vegetables followed by raspberry crumble, all for £12. Borsov 2/280 (lehkahlava.cz)
Explore: A map showing all of the tourist hotspots in the Czech capital, Prague
Lidova Jidelna Tesnov
Cheap as chips, canteen-style restaurants were commonplace during the Communist era. Providing low-cost Czech fare for mainly locals, this no-nonsense, no-frills eatery is worth experiencing. Situated in the quiet, residential Petrska quarter, beef in pepper sauce with dumplings costs £3. Wash it down with wine (£1) or squash (15p). Tesnov 1163/5 (lidovajidelna.cz)
Manifesto Market
This food and culture market is Prague’s first no-cash space, and it’s brimming with enticing stalls that cater to all tastes (open 11am to 10pm). Try the lunch special at Minnie’s: mini pancakes and filling (chocolate and banana was my favourite) with a drink for £5. Na Florenci (manifesto.city)
Cafe Moment
Wander over to the elegant residential neighbourhood of Vinohrady, once blanketed in vineyards, and admire the Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau architecture. For lunch, pop in to the unpretentious, vegan eaterie Cafe Moment and try its white bean soup (£1.40) or stuffed peppers with tomato sauce and pasta (£3.65) with a glass of wine (£1). Slezska 62
TRAVEL FACTS
Easyjet has returns from Bristol from £55 (easyjet.com). The Airport Express bus to the city centre costs £2 and takes around 30 minutes. For more information, visit czechtourism.com

Create Construction starts £20m Cardiff student job
Crosslane Student Developments has signed up Create Construction for its 391-bed purpose-built student accommodation scheme in Cardiff.
The Blackpool-based contractor has built up a track record of student and hotel projects around the country from Exeter to Manchester.
The Howard Gardens job in Cardiff gives developer Crosslane’ joint venture with Harrison Street Real Estate Capital a £180m student portfolio of 1,685 beds in Leeds, Coventry, Portsmouth and Swansea.
Investec is providing £19m finance for the development of the new Cardiff scheme.
Crosslane is acting as development manager for the JV to oversee construction of the Howard Gardens site to ensure it is completed on time, ahead of the 2020/21 academic year, and to budget.
David Smith, Managing Director at Crosslane Student Developments, said: “Howard Gardens is a cluster flat focused design, which gives students in Cardiff much needed and better value accommodation. It will help encourage students to be part of a community and share social experiences, while the majority of recent student accommodation developments in the city have been self-contained studio apartments.
“Its 391 beds will make a significant impact on easing the supply/demand imbalance for student accommodation in Cardiff, helping to free up private housing to rent for families and young professionals.”

Day 14 bring to us the letter 'N'. We had a few candidates for this one and the one we wanted to go for we didn't have any photos of (without nicking off the internet) so have end up going for 'Norbrek Castle'. (FYI we wanted to go for the 'Nolans' but Coleen strangely didn't acknowledge our request for a photo) Norbrek Castle is quite iconic on the Blackpool promenade, one of the biggest in Blackpool boasts 480 rooms and a load of conference facilities. Originally built as private dwelling, the hotel is now owned by the Britannia Group. The hotel has both its lovers and it haters, the hotel itself is pretty tired looking and could do with tarting up, some of the extensions haven't been done particularly sympathetically to the original structure but the prices charged do tend to reflect the fact you're not getting premium accommodation, you can often stay at the Norbrek for a lower price than many budget hotel chains! Picture courtesy Juliette W Gregson heritage photographer. Thanks so much for sharing Juliette. Tomorrows letter is a tough one.......... whats your best guess for the letter 'O'? ...can you even come up with one?? (if you do, the chances are, you've guessed right) :-) #A2Zofblackpool #blackpool #norbrekcastle #visitblackpool #seaside #hotels #tourism #insiderblackpool (at Queens Promenade) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFHfxbggiuG/?igshid=1d19a443yvc76

GREAT VENUE, LOVELY TEAM/ STAFF - you won't regret booking here! To be honest, there wasn't anything not to like - had a brilliant 30th birthday party! After my initial inquiry was unsuccessful as the venue had been booked over my proposed date, Theo (manager) took the initiative to get in touch again to let me know that it comes free for my 30th birthday party date. He met me at the venue at very short notice and was only too happy to show me around and talk me through all the facilities. Theo was also great on email thereafter - checking in re. whether I wanted drinks on arrival, DJ equipment set up on the night etc. On the night itself, Jake and his team couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. Jake himself held the ladder whilst I strung bunting from the lamps and were just a lovely presence all night - smiling and dancing whilst serving everyone. Maria was great on the door - we didn't have to worry about any gate crashers as she and her colleague checked everybody in on arrival.
