You will not have learnt much about her from the newspapers or television. She was the least-known of the dead, a high-flying financier who was said to be romantically involved with another one of the Kennedy clan, Bobby Shriver. That was how her life was edited down for public consumption. But Lauren was bigger than that, by a long shot. She reminded me of the lines in Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities where he is describing the bodyguard employed by a wily lawyer in Manhattan. Wolfe describes his man as being "less a human being, than a force of nature".

Lauren certainly didn't look like a bodyguard - more a catwalk model - but she never met you with anything less than the full force of her personality. And that was very powerful indeed. Her physical appearance was striking. Tall and statuesque, with long brown hair, she always surged rather than strolled; she was always the figure in the room who demanded the closest attention. I first met her through my friend Thea Guest, who is in New York helping to console Lauren's family in their days of darkness

O Dia Mundial de Combate ao HIV/AIDS foi criado pela Assembleia Mundial de Saúde, com o apoio da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). Diversas ONGs e fundações no mundo estão na luta contra o HIV/AIDS. E a Mercury Phoenix Trust é uma delas. A fundação foi criada apos o The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, em 1992, por Brian May, Roger Taylor e Jim Beach e já doou milhões de dólares e financiou inúmeros projetos na batalha contra o HIV/AIDS. O MPT trabalha com projetos de educação e conscientização, principalmente voltados aos jovens e faz doações para grandes ONGs e instituições de caridade bem conhecidas, assim como para pequenas organizações de base. Outra ONG é a (RED), criada pelo cantor Bono Vox e o ativista Bobby Shriver para arrecadar fundos para a Global Fund (organização que luta contra a AIDS, a tuberculose e a malária). A (RED) colabora com serviços de prevenção, tratamento, aconselhamento, teste de HIV e cuidados. Em suas pesquisas para o filme Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek procurou entender como era viver com HIV na década de 1980 e isso o levou a querer saber como era viver com o vírus em 2018. Foi assim que a (RED) e Rami se encontraram. Rami, para conhecer o trabalho da ong, viajou para a África subsariana, onde as mulheres representaram 63% das novas infecções por HIV em 2021 e meninas adolescentes e mulheres jovens, de 15 a 24 anos, têm três vezes mais chances de adquirir o HIV do que meninos adolescentes e homens jovens da mesma faixa etária. No Brasil, o dia 1° de dezembro marca tbem o início do Dezembro Vermelho, cujo objetivo é chamar a atenção para a o diagnóstico precoce, prevenção, assistência e direitos das pessoas que vivem com o HIV.
