Big Bend Ranch State Park

Despite propaganda that would tell you otherwise, the Texas-Mexico border along the Rio Grande isn't some lawless warzone. It's actually a really beautiful, peaceful stretch of river that is home to lots of very cool local flora and fauna, some of which are critically threatened or even endangered, like the Mexican long-nose bat and the Chisos agave cactus.

I live very close to the border and visit it often. It's beautiful and peaceful out here, but governor Greg Abbott is threatening both human lives and river ecosystem with his so-called floating wall, a stretch of buoys and barbed wire that cuts across the middle of the Rio Grande. What Is Alex Jones Doing in This Tiny Far West Texas Town?

The bankrupt Infowars host is the latest colorful character to stake out a place in the desert outpost of Terlingua.

On the edge of Big Bend National Park, in the remote far West Texas town of approximately 150, Terlingua residents have coined a lot of sayings. There’s one about dating in the town:

“The odds are good, but the goods are odd.”

There’s one about the brand of eccentrics who choose to live there:

“Everyone in Terlingua is running from something,” said Stephanie Neckar, a local real estate agent.

Another resident recently told me: “We’re all here because we’re not all there.”

I was talking to these folks about a new interloper who ought to fit right in: the excitable alt-right radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Jones, along with his Austin-based company, Free Speech Systems, was ordered to pay $1.5 billion in damages to the families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims in 2022, after he promoted false conspiracy theories suggesting that the massacre was a hoax and that the deceased children were actually actors.

Shortly after that verdict, Jones and Free Speech Systems filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

“I’m officially out of money, personally,” Jones said in his Infowars podcast. “It’s all going to be filed. It’s all going to be public. And you will see that Alex Jones has almost no cash.”

Nevertheless, property records show that in June 2023, his wife, Erika Wulff Jones, purchased twenty acres—appraised at $20,000, according to property records—in Terlingua Ranch, a sparsely populated swath of desert north of town.

If Terlingua is offbeat, the ranch is even weirder.

It’s where David Kaczynski, brother of Ted Kaczynski—the Unabomber—retreated to connect with nature and escape the media throngs that wanted to know more about his infamous sibling.

And it’s where a woman named Judith Broughton kept her dead mother buried in a blue tarp beneath her kitchen floor while she collected the woman’s Social Security benefits.

Terlingua and the ranch have also long been places of refuge.

As Texas Monthly writer at large Robert Draper wrote in 1996, “Terlingua is the state’s last outpost for outcasts, for those maligned American loners who fashion their own crude American dream in the anonymity of the desert.”

A Terlingua resident, who owns land neighboring the plot Wulff Jones bought, spoke with me on the condition that I withhold his name.

(Terlingua is an intimate hamlet, he noted, and “anything I say is going to piss off half of the community.”)

He told me that Terlingua was the first place he’d ever felt a sense of belonging.

“And I’m not the strangest person in town,” he said, “only maybe the third strangest.”

Terlingua residents first took notice of Jones and his wife last year, when they were seen on a couple of occasions dining at High Sierra, one of the few watering holes in the area.

“I heard that he partied pretty hard,” said Neckar, who also expressed some surprise that the Joneses bought property where they did.

“That’s a weird piece of land to buy,” Neckar said. “There’s no development [paved roads, electricity, sewage]; there’s some homesteads; it’s rough as heck.”

Erika Wulff Jones’s real estate agent, Kate Keenan, declined to be interviewed on the purchase.

Jones’s neighbors could attest to the land’s rawness.

Inhabitants of the ranch get their electricity from a solar system and water via catchment.

The unnamed neighbor first encountered the Joneses in February of this year, when they showed up in a “big, black, brand-new Suburban-type thing,” he said, adding that Jones was personable, while his wife seemed “very nice.”

“Would I have chosen Alex Jones as my neighbor if I had a choice?” the neighbor said. “No. But that said, we have a very diverse community here.”

As the neighbor described it, Terlingua is deeply divided as far as politics are concerned—a division that was spawned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

(In the November 2020 election, Donald Trump secured 53 percent of the vote in the precinct where Terlingua lies, while Joe Biden scored 45 percent; in 2016, the divide between Trump and Hillary Clinton was a more narrow 48 percent to 46 percent, though the number of voters also increased in 2020.)

“Before the great divide of COVID, we all were very functional together,” he said. “Now we’re working on bridging those gaps.” Referring to Jones, he said, “Half the community is going to love him. It doesn’t happen to be my half of the community.”

Rhonda Haberer, the owner of Tin Valley Retro Rentals, a private campground that offers both primitive camping and “glamping,” belongs to that other half.

“I would love to have him for a neighbor,” Haberer said of Jones. “He might make a landing strip for future alien[s].”

Jones has been known to promote theories around extraterrestrial life, and he has claimed the U.S. government is communicating with space aliens with the help of psychedelic drugs.

“We have many, many people, including extreme liberals, that believe in aliens out here,” Haberer added.

Jones gave his neighbor no indication of what he intended to do with the land, and neither Jones nor Wulff Jones responded to requests for an interview.

“He didn’t even know where his property was,” his neighbor said. “I had to go show him.”

Jones isn’t the first to purchase land in the region without comprehending where, exactly, it is.

In recent years, Terlingua has experienced rapid development, particularly since the pandemic, which has caused property prices to skyrocket.

Living in the Texas desert is not for the faint of heart, and it’s still too early in Jones’s tenure to say whether he can abide by its terms.

His neighbor told me another saying about Terlingua: “You’re either a good neighbor, or you won’t be a neighbor for very long.”

Why I Love Florida’s Nature Coast

I look ahead and there is a curving blacktop taking me through stands of pine, oak, and sugar maple trees with occasional citrus trees popping up here and there. I feel safe and nurtured by the natural surroundings. In the winter, the sugar maples turn colors like orange and red. Some of the bushes turn yellow. It is our version of the northern fall colors and it is beautiful. I keep an eye open for traveling deer, tortoises, squirrels, and other fauna that may want to cross the roads I travel, both to keep from hitting them and to appreciate their graceful presence. I am on my way to a Chamber of Commerce luncheon, where I will meet and eat with fellow small business owners, politicians, committed nonprofit directors, resort directors, and other community leaders. We will chat about families, upcoming events, business, responsibilities, and opportunities, then we will unanimously stand and pledge our allegiance to our country and say a prayer for God’s wisdom, guidance, and blessings. The east side of the Suncoast Parkway is still heavily forested as part of the Withlacoochee State Forest. There are several ranches, farms, and large cow/calf operations, including the Bellamy Brothers Ranch, the Barthle Brothers Ranch, Campton Ranch, and Fenco Farms. In fact, we have the Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve and the north end of the Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserve protecting our natural shorelines. First-magnitude freshwater springs abound throughout Florida’s Nature Coast, with Weeki Wachee Springs probably being the most famous thanks to Newt Perry and his original Weeki Wachee Park. Today Weeki Wachee Springs is a State Park, protecting the headwaters of the Weeki Wachee River. Next is Homosassa Springs, with its 1960s attraction and resort having been converted into a State Park, protecting the headwaters of the Homosassa River. The torpedo-shaped manatee glides through the waters at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, one of the places you can find manatees year-round on the NautreCoast. Photo by Sally White Old Homosassa is a fishing village that is still a working waterfront, with fishermen and shrimpers plying its waters to make a living. There are also resorts and charters for vacationers and visitors, as well as the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins, which is what remains of a huge plantation that was located in Homosassa, but was burned out by the union armies. Tampa Bay Pushes Northward, but Can't Overrun Our Small-Town Culture As Tampa Bay pushes northward into this region, many ranches have been converted to subdivisions and planned communities, but the small-town culture remains in the cities that populate the region, including Zephyrhills, Dade City, Brooksville, Inverness, and Crystal River. Some are feeling the transition more, like New Port Richey with its historic downtown, riverfront, and small business culture inching toward a more urban feel with its public recreation center and city services. Port Richey is a city just north of New Port Richey. Its lack of a downtown area is replaced by an active waterfront district. There are many census-designated places like Aripeka, Hernando Beach, Spring Hill, Bayport, Hudson, Homosassa, Land O’Lakes, Beverly Hills, Ridge Manor, Elfers, Lecanto, Holiday, and Floral City. While Spring Hill and Land O'Lakes have become popular residential areas, they have no downtown or city services. Lecanto is growing like wildfire with residential and commercial growth. It is in central Citrus County and the county’s government services are located there. Wesley Chapel is another census-designated area that is booming! Starting with Saddlebrook Resort, a nationally recognized golf and tennis resort, Wesley Chapel began its growth in the 1980s and has become a powerhouse in the east Pasco region. To drive State Road 54 from I-75 to Zephyrhills is an exercise in growth through residential development. Still, when you get to Zephyrhills, the pace slows down and the small businesses abound. (btw, this is not new information)

Sometimes I have anxiety that people will quiz me on my knowledge about wetlands and I won't be able to come up with interesting and accurate facts to convey their importance. I don't want to feel pressure to be a walking encyclopedia of wetland knowledge (even though that would be cool); the way I want to learn about wetlands and share my experiences with different kinds of wetlands is by visiting them and that being enough. As I do this, I know along the way I'll start to retain information. In the meantime, I've been creating digital PDF zines about my experience with wetlands. Learn more at the end of this section!

Before coming to Arizona, I ignorantly thought there was no water out here. I bought into the danger of the single-story writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talked about during a TEDx talk. Of course Arizona and the southwest have rivers, streams, lakes, springs, seeps and groundwater, so what the hell was I talking about! I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that not only are there man-made wetlands in the Phoenix metro area, but there is a such thing as desert wetlands. My first reaction was "oh my gosh really?!" My second reaction was "that is so f'ing magical" and my third reaction was, "is it normal to have wetlands in the desert?"

"From agricultural expansion and river diversion to invasive species and climate change, wetlands face numerous threats. But one of the gravest may be ignorance. We still don’t know enough about these habitats, and they can still surprise even seasoned scientists like us. Perhaps most surprising of all are those wetlands that seem to confound all logic by thriving amid some of the driest places on Earth". - Paradox lost: wetlands can form in deserts, but we need to find and protect them

My visits to the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, Arizona

"The Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch was created as an innovative and unique way to combine water resource management with wildlife habitat preservation, education, and outdoor recreation. It is an oasis in the Sonoran Desert featuring seven aquifer recharge basins – each kept at different water levels to create diverse habitats and attract a variety of wildlife. Designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, approximately 298 species of birds have been identified at the preserve, and many insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals have found a home here as well." - Discover Gilbert

I took these photos of the riparian preserve during different seasons.

During my visits I have seen hummingbirds, quails and large white birds that look like pelicans, but I don't know what they are called.

Photo/Video Descriptions: This area of the preserve has signs that say "Reclaimed Water: Do not Drink". I'm guessing that the wetland habitat helps to filter and clean used water so that it can be used again. I'm still trying to understand how the recharge system works and hope maybe one day I can talk to someone who works at the preserve.

"the future" | predicting the future

"the future" captures my first time knowingly standing over an aquifer which is described as an underground lake about 150 feet below these sounds of treated wastewater being pumped into seven different recharge basins throughout the Riparian Preserve in the town of Gilbert. A plaque in front of the recharge infrastructure I stood in front of/near to record, describes where Gilbert gets its water from, it reads:

"In the past, residents of Arizona used groundwater from this aquifer faster than it could be replenished naturally with rainfall. These basins were designed to allow water to seep down into the aquifer, replenishing our groundwater supply, so that we have plenty of water available for our use in the future".

For the title I use "the future" as it relates to water, waterbodies, waterways and water cycles as a way to push back on this particular spacetime language being in quotation marks - with quotation marks often times being used to indicate inspection or interrogation, irony, inaccuracy or skepticism.

#Repost @democracynow: The Environmental Protection Agency has rolled back parts of the Clean Water Act which protect millions of acres of wetlands, in order to comply with a Supreme Court ruling. The right-wing-dominated court ruled in May that wetlands must have a "continuous surface connection" to streams, oceans, rivers and lakes to be subject to federal regulations on pollution. Up to 63% of wetlands will be affected. The White House said the Supreme Court ruling "jeopardize[s] the sources of clean drinking water for farmers, businesses and millions of Americans." The destiny of wetlands: Is there such a thing as destiny?

I never really use the word frequency because it's used so much and some people associate it with the New Age Movement, so therefore its discounted, but frequency is real. I'm curious about the frequencies that make up the awareness and visions we as human beings (with our various identities and positionalities) want and have for wetlands, and what the desires of wetlands themselves might be?

I'll always remember thinking about rewriting the stories of wetlands which for so long have been seen as useless and taking up space, as well as the destiny* (in other words, the trajectories) of wetlands during my explorations of Jamaica Bay in 2021, especially in contrast to the Graniteville Wetlands in Staten Island.

If we think about the kinds of resources and amount of resources a wetland as an ecosystem is afforded (i.e. love, care, protection, healing, stewardship) can we wonder about its destiny? Does logic have a role in destiny? For example, you plant a seed, and it gets soil with compost, water, sunshine, seed songs and conversation, and before you know it, a plant has blossomed and fruited to produce more seeds. Every seed doesn't make it, even with the best care, but is there some kind of TLC-logic (tender-loving-care-logic) that makes the plant's life possible? If we think about the kinds of resources and amount of resources a wetland as an ecosystem is afforded (i.e. love, care, protection, healing, stewardship) can we wonder about its destiny?

Please research the history of wetlands where you live and in the United States. We've lost a lot of wetlands to agriculture, industry and real estate development, but not all. The more people who uplift wetlands in different ways, the better, and it's happening! We are a glorious chorus for that which was previously seen as dirty, useless and taking up space.

*Destiny: We all have our own understandings and views around destiny, and some folks resonate with this word while others do not. Another word to replace with destiny could be trajectory.

Etymology

Texas comes from a Caddo Indian word meaning "friends" or "allies." The Caddo were a tribe that inhabited the area now known as Texas before European colonizers arrived. The Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to visit the region, and they called it "Tejas," which is how the name evolved into "Texas." When Texas became a state in 1845, it adopted the nickname "The Lone Star State" to represent its independence and unity. Today, the name Texas is recognized throughout the world and is synonymous with cowboys, oil, and the Wild West.

History

Texas has a fascinating history, shaped by many different cultures and political systems throughout the centuries. The area that is now Texas was inhabited by indigenous tribes for thousands of years before the arrival of European explorers. In 1519, Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda mapped the Gulf Coast of Texas, claiming the land for Spain. In 1718, the Spanish established the city of San Antonio, which would become a crucial center of the Texas cattle industry. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Texas became a part of the new nation. However, tensions soon arose between the Mexican government and American settlers in Texas, who sought greater autonomy and economic opportunities. In 1836, Texans declared independence from Mexico and formed the Republic of Texas. The republic lasted for 9 years and was recognized by several nations, including the United States and France. During this time, Texas struggled with financial instability and border disputes with Mexico. In 1845, Texas was annexed by the United States and became the 28th state. This sparked a conflict with Mexico, which saw the annexation as an illegal act of aggression. The resulting Mexican-American War lasted from 1846 to 1848 and ended with the US acquiring much of the Southwest, including California, Arizona, and New Mexico. The Texas economy boomed in the late 1800s, thanks to the cattle industry and the discovery of oil. However, the state also experienced violence and discrimination against minority groups, such as African Americans and Mexican Americans. In 1861, Texas seceded from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. After the war, Texas was readmitted to the union in 1870. Today, Texas has a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and festivals. Visitors can explore historic missions, tour cattle ranches, and learn about the lives of pioneers and cowboys. The state is also home to many museums and monuments that celebrate its complex history.

Geology

When it comes to geology, Texas is a unique state with plenty of fascinating natural wonders. Its diverse landscape is home to a wide range of mineral deposits, rock formations, and geological features. One of the most notable geological features in Texas is the Permian Basin, which is known for its vast oil reserves. The Permian Basin spans across West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, covering an area of over 86,000 square miles. The Permian Basin is composed of a thick layer of sedimentary rocks, including sandstone and limestone, which contain large amounts of oil and natural gas. Another fascinating geological feature in Texas is the Guadalupe Mountains. Texas deserts consist of several different types, including the Chihuahuan Desert, the Sonoran Desert, and the Trans-Pecos Desert. The deserts also provide important habitat for migrating birds and butterflies. Unfortunately, Texas's unique ecology is also under threat. Biodiversity

The state also has a healthy population of white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and quail. The biodiversity of Texas is not limited to land. The state has a significant coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, which is home to many sea creatures. The Gulf of Mexico has over 200 species of fish and is an essential breeding ground for shrimp, oysters, and blue crabs. The state also boasts many lakes and rivers that provide habitat for a variety of fish species. The largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie are some of the most popular fish that attract anglers from all over the country. Texas has several important ecosystems, including the Edwards Plateau, the Piney Woods, and the Big Thicket. Each has its unique flora and fauna. For instance, the Piney Woods ecosystem is home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, the Louisiana pine snake, and the dusky gopher frog. The state is also known for its world-renowned wildflower displays. Every spring, the state bursts into a riot of colors, with millions of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, and other wildflowers covering the fields and highways. Texas has taken significant steps to protect its biodiversity. The state has several wildlife preserves and state parks that provide habitat for many species. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department oversees the management of these lands and works tirelessly to protect the state's biodiversity. the rich biodiversity of Texas is one of its most significant assets. The state has an incredible diversity of species, ranging from birds and fish to reptiles and mammals. Every year, millions of people visit Texas to experience its unique flora and fauna, making it a top destination for nature lovers.

Climate

Texas is known for its warm, subtropical climate, which is influenced by its size and geography. The state experiences a range of weather patterns, depending on which part you're in. The northern regions tend to be cooler, while the coastal areas stay warm and humid all year round. Summers are hot and dry, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 100°F (38°C) in some parts of the state. Winters are mild, with temperatures dipping below freezing in some areas but remaining moderate overall. Spring and fall bring pleasant temperatures and are popular times for outdoor activities. Texas often experiences severe weather, such as hurricanes and tornadoes. The Gulf Coast is particularly vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes, which can cause flooding and damage to property. Tornadoes are most common in the spring and fall and can occur anywhere in the state. - In May 2019, tornadoes touched down in parts of central and eastern Texas, causing extensive damage. - In 2017, Hurricane Harvey brought catastrophic flooding to Houston and other parts of southeastern Texas, causing billions of dollars in damage. - In 2021, Winter Storm Uri caused power outages and water shortages across the state, highlighting the need for better infrastructure and disaster preparedness. Despite the risks, Texas's climate and weather patterns remain an important part of its identity and culture. Many residents take pride in the state's resilience and ability to weather storms, both literal and figurative.

Environmental Issues

Despite its natural beauty, Texas has faced significant environmental challenges in recent years. These cities are home to a number of industrial facilities that emit high levels of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds. Water scarcity is also a major concern in Texas, especially in dry regions like West Texas. Droughts are common, and water supplies are often overused and mismanaged. Texas is also home to many ranches and farms that require large amounts of water for irrigation, further exacerbating the problem. In addition, Texas has experienced several devastating oil spills in recent years, including the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010 and the Mayflower spill in 2013. These spills not only have a significant impact on the environment but also on the local economy. To address these issues, Texas has implemented several initiatives and regulations to improve air and water quality, including stricter emissions standards for industrial facilities and more efficient use of water resources. Politics

When it comes to politics, Texas is often associated with conservatism and the Republican Party.
