#BB!Cedarstar

I have learned so little about cedarstar but already he’s my little guy. My little meow meow. Blorbo from the bonefall. The idea of him and pinestar being friends tickles me so much tree 4 tree friendship. silly guy who chose his DAD as his deputy. The designated Cedarbringer for thunderclan I love him (if you have any more facts could I perhaps hear them?)
Here, warm up sketch be upon ye lmao
Tumblr media
I'll make a summary on him when one of his appearances is relevant again, he has a minor role in Tallstar's Collapse as Heatherstar begins the Campaign Era, and would probably get a few scenes in a more beefy version of Pinestar's Crusade. He may not get as much screentime in Brokenstar's Cataclysm as he had in Yellowfang's Secret.
Canon doesn't let cats have friends enough. I feel like it should be especially important to Pinestar, his whole thing is how much he struggled with not being the ideal leader.
Cedarstar was well into his reign when Pinestar took over. He had no strong feelings on Doestar, who was busy running crusades.
He ended ShadowClan's participation in the crusades a lot earlier, when Snowtuft ended up slaughtering several children.
The brutality of that era had an impact on him. I think Cedar would have liked to lead his Clan through a peaceful time, he was surprisingly agreeable to Pinestar's negotiations.
See, negotiation in those times was somewhat rare, usually only happening when something had already gone wrong. Like a death in battle, a time of starvation, a flea infestation...
Clans didn't like to admit weakness back then, and they rarely talked. It had been like this since the Ripple Era, probably from hostility at Ripplestar's nearly successful campaign.
Unfortunately Pinestar didn't change this like Firestar eventually would, but he did at least try.
And for a brief period of time, he succeeded with ShadowClan. There was trading between the Clans, but Shadow and Thunder really took the cake.
Like I mentioned, ThunderClan supplied leather, meats, animal glue, stuff like that. ShadowClan provided cedar chips, fruits through the winter, linen and flax oil, so on.
Cedarstar was a jovial dude who loved food. He was easy-going and hard to offend, even when he went into battle he was usually cracking gruesome jokes the whole time. The word in my head when I think of him is, "agreeable." Guy came from a big, happy family and it shows lmao.
But that's not to say he was free of the problems of his time. There would be no bargain over his territory, and he was completely willing to show off the might of ShadowClan. He didn't roll over and try to compromise with WindClan; HIS Clan was strong off the exports of flax and that was their favorite summer hunting ground. Cedarstar immediately announced battle, and met Heatherstar's campaign with force.
He underestimated Heatherstar's tenacity, and was on his deathbed before the war was even halfway over. To his deputy Raggedpelt, he asked for a promise; that Raggedstar would not allow Heatherstar to win in the end.
And that's Cedarstar! All things considered, a minor character. But his first deputy Stonetooth was his dad and I feel like his family was full of respected warriors at one time.
Also @animatewarriorcats put a bib on their design of Cedarstar and I've never been able to unsee it. I've stolen it, I apologize thusly, but he's a man with a bib now and that has been an innate part of Cedarstar in my head for months

Could you give us a run down of what the leaders were like in shadowclan from marshstar on? I feel like we have a good idea of the thunder clan leaders but not the others
The succession of leaders in BB!ShadowClan is Marshstar, Houndstar, Cedarstar, Raggedstar, Brokenstar, and from Nightstar on you know the drama. Ragged and Broken will get covered in 'Brokenstar's Cataclysm' eventually.
Marshstar
Was Ripplestar's lover and deputy. Survived the disastrous defeat at the Gathering.
With their ambitions to bring SkyClan back dead, Marsh had to focus his attention on his Clan. They lost a lot of warriors...
But, some of the rebels of other Clans had been exiled, so there was a small boost in population.
ShadowClan developed its "reputation" in the Ripple Era, of being cold and cruel hearted. They were attacked a lot and became notoriously aggressive at defending their borders as a result.
He wasn't a 'happy' person. Always a bit forlorn and defeated.
Really did not like being a leader in these circumstances. His warriors didn't usually feel comfortable approaching him, you could tell he did not want to be in this situation.
Eventually, he picked Houdfang as his deputy. Houndfang was extremely aggressive, but not ambitious. Marshstar wanted to leave a leader after him who would be strong, forceful, and defend the Clan ruthlessly.
When he died, he was buried beside Ripplestar. ShadowClan has a complicated relationship to their legacy, their graves are far out of the way in the Forest Territory, and overgrown.
Marshstar sat through about half of their StarClan trial, but quickly grew annoyed. He hated this game of being interrogated, questioned for his sins, his life being weighed. Like... screw you people, "I can already see that Ripplestar and Spottedpelt aren't with you so why should I care about this? Thank you for your time, this is a waste of mine."
In terms of personality, Marshstar is soft-spoken but tired. He can be a pessimist or a realist depending on his mood.
As part of the Dark Forest crew, Marshstar is usually tagging along with Ripplestar's clique.
Houndstar
They weren't lying that Hound can Star
He was BRUTAL. He was always skirting just around the edge of the code, he "encouraged" disproportionate violence against attackers.
His punishments for violating the code against killing was light and his punishments for violating the Law of Loyalty were heavy.
During Darkstar's Commandment, Houndstar took Oakstar's side at first. It seemed like a foolish dream, and the fact this would put an end to kitten stealing seemed odd. Yes, he'd seen kits stolen from his Clan, but he'd stolen from others equally. Challenging each other for resources is what warriors do.
However, he turned around on it before Oakstar did. Houndstar was still a pious cat, with much faith in StarClan. If Darkstar had been given a commandment, he trusted her. Three kits dead was a heavy cost.
He believed very strongly in the idea of legacy and was very close with his children. I'm planning for him to have at least two litters; BATEAR might be in the oldest one, Mousewing was in the younger and was never able to meet her brother.
I might hit this character with the Woman Beam
Cedarstar
Wasn't actually very violent. He was a logistics guy. Fantastic deputy.
Not even half as peaceful as Pinestar, but they vibed. Did a fair amount of trading, particularly flax for leather. Cedar chips as well, as the only cedar in the territory is planted by Carrionplace.
I think Cedar had some corny satisfaction in being The Cedarbringer. He was a bit of a nerd.
DON'T mistake this for nonaggression though, Cedar was just as willing to push borders as any other leader.
His deputy, Stonetooth, is his dad. He chose him for his age and wisdom. Cedar also definitely had kids of his own, I'm planning for this family to have been pretty big at some point.
When Heatherstar took power and started their campaign to take the Mothermouth Moorland, Cedar rose to the challenge. The conflict was standard at first
But as it dragged on, as ShadowClan stopped having access to flax and was losing their important summer hunting grounds, it stopped being the normal amount of inter-Clan violence.
The battles got larger and bloodier with each season
The war drained his lives away. Though he'd overseen the gentler years of the Campaign Era, the stress had caused him to lose weight and turn gray before the end.
He passed on the baton to Raggedstar, commanding that he never let WindClan take their territory from them. At first, Raggedstar agreed wholeheartedly, ready to win the conflict for ShadowClan.

What did Snowtuft do again I forgor
In-canon, we don't know. I've gone and made placeholder info for BB until we find out.
BB!Snowtuft got carried away during a Crusade and killed a mother Chelford cat, then tried to hide his mistake by killing her kittens too. He was interrupted by a shocked Clanmate, who took the last kit to be raised in ShadowClan.
The Code does not apply to outsiders, so Cedarstar wasn't sure if he could punish Snowtuft for violating the Code for Kits while not also applying the Code against Killing. Not that a leader HAS to be fair but... that's who Cedarstar is.
But ShadowClan could never forget what Snowtuft did, and it put the Crusades into a new light. Some didn't care and were excusing the death of kittens, others never saw Snowtuft the same way again now knowing what he was capable of. It's why Snowtuft doesn't want to remember it; it revealed a lot about himself, and it's not like he can ever really redeem himself for it
Unfortunately ShadowClan's reckoning didn't last very long, as the Campaign Era started a new, much more personal conflict.

What would the BB! Broken code protagonists think of Snowtuft if they found out what he did to end up in the dark forest?
Toying with the idea that BB!Shadowsight knows. He's listened to the Educator, he knows the basic story, how Cedarstar ended the crusades because of the murder of children. He probably heard the name "Snowtuft" and his heart dropped.
But Snowtuft completely doesn't remember. He doesn't want to. If Shadowsight suggested telling him, I think Snow would freak out a little and shout at him to stop.
And at that point, Shadowsight can't do anything with this information. Beggars can't be choosers, and he's not about to walk into the War Crime Forest and start getting picky about the War Criminal who offers to help him.

is foxheart of cedarstar's (?) shadowclan a dishonor title? she's literally named "bitch" or whatever i can't believe that that was her Actual Name so does that like, change in BB?
LOL no ShadowClan is just like that. Normal ShadowClan sense of humor.
Her name is even worse actually. In Clanmew it's Ke'ekbabi, which we might translate as "Tod Fox Heart-will-beat," a Ke'ek is a roving, aggressive young fox without a territory that challenges everything and engages in mischief.
Her name basically means "their nature is to cause problems on purpose."
