Monahans Windmill (Monahans Sandhills State Park)
flickr
Monahans Windmill (Monahans Sandhills State Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking around part of the Pump Jack Picnic area with a view looking to the west across a dune ridges with wild grasses present in Monahans Sandhills State Park. This is in the Sandhills Picnic Pavilion portion of the state park. With this image, I decided to get down somewhat low behind nearby wild grasses on this sand dune and capture a look beyond to the windmill off in the distance. My thinking was while most of the windmill would be above the grasses, a portion would have to have that look through it. The blue skies would then be that color contrast to complement the image with earth-tones present in the lower portion.

Bow Range with the Ridges and Peaks of Mount Victoria, Mount Aberdeen, and Fairview Mountain (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At Morant’s Curve with a view looking to the west to mountains off in the distance. My thought on composing this image was to zoom in with the focal length and have the mountainside as well as the ridges and peaks filling up most of the image. I used the PeakVisor app on my iPhone to identify the specific peaks present.

Mexican Canyon Railroad Trestle and the Mountains of Lincoln National Forest by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Osha Trail with a view looking to the west from an overlook that included the Mexican Canyon Railroad Trestle, forest covered ridges and spurs, and a far distant White Sands National Park. This is in Lincoln National Forest. I decided to go wide angle with this image, so that I could take advantage of the high ground I was on and capture a sweeping view down the canyon, but still include some blue skies and clouds above to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Wall Ruins at Pueblo Bonito (Chaco Culture National Historical Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking around the Pueblo Bonito area in Chaco Culture National Historical Park. The view is looking to the west using the ruins of a wall to set an interest in a setting in this part of northern New Mexico. What I wanted to capture with this image was to use the blue skies and clouds above as a backdrop to highlight and bring out a focus to the wall itself. I kept the wall at an angle, going across the image, as I felt that would help better bring out a look across this setting.

Mountain View and Beyond to White Sands While Hiking in Lincoln National Forest

Mountain View and Beyond to White Sands While Hiking in Lincoln National Forest by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the west while taking in views across a forested, mountain landscape present in Lincoln National Forest. The view is from an overlook along the Osha Trail. There is a canyon, if you will, created between the two ridges coming off the main portion of the Sacramento Mountains, that was to my rear. This is also how the main road from Alamogordo, New Mexico, comes into the national forest and mountains. Far off in the distance is White Sands National Park and other ridges and peaks of the San Andres Mountains. One thing I had to keep in mind while composing this image was metering it properly, given the very bright highlights with the skies above and more distant national park and mountain landscapes. Nearby was more in shadows and not as bright. A definite dynamic range where I had to set an exposure properly.

In Flight Over the Waters of the Pacific Ocean at Tolowa Dunes State Park

In Flight Over the Waters of the Pacific Ocean at Tolowa Dunes State Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the west while taking in views of a pod of California brown pelicans in flight at Tolowa Dunes State Park. My thinking in composing this image was to zoom in with the focal length to include only this one portion of the birds. The rest was the matter of attempting to line up the ocean and overcast skies to kind of sort of blend in as a backdrop and minimize that while focusing on the birds.

My Footsteps Know of the Mountains (Lincoln National Forest)
flickr
My Footsteps Know of the Mountains (Lincoln National Forest) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: My Footsteps Know of the Mountains There is a rhythm Felt in my soul And heard sometimes in my labored breath I feel a cool breeze It rejuvenates me, but only for a moment I have a few more miles to walk Then I can rest for tomorrow's adventure Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon in Lincoln National Forest while hiking the Osha Trail. The view is looking to the west with the ridges and spurs coming off the main mountain area and the valley flowing downhill in between. Far off in the distance near the horizon are the white sands of the national park and then a more distant mountain range on the other side. One of the reviews in AllTrails mentioned this point, which is one of the reasons why I decided to hike it and take in the view. Not to disappoint! The rest with composing this image was attempting to line up the valley with the ridges and align the horizon a little higher into the image and bring out more of a sweeping view across the setting. I exposed the image for the brighter areas in the skies above, while keeping a focus to a near more nearby tree line.

A Pod of Pelicans Flying Over the Waves of the Pacific Ocean by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the west while taking in views of a passing pod of California brown pelicans in flight. This was located in Tolowa Dunes State Park and along the Pacific Ocean coastline. My thinking in composing this image was to zoom in as much as I was able to with the camera lens on my Nikon D850 SLR camera and focus on this one grouping of pelicans to my front. In someways, the image would be from side to side filled with pelicans in flight.
