The Ceremony (Nagisa Oshima, 1971)
Cast: Kenzo Kawaraski, Atsuko Kaku, Atsuo Nakamura, Kiyoshi Tsuchiya, Kei Sato, Akiko Koyama, Nobuko Otowa. Screenplay: Mamoru Sasaki, Tsutomu Tamura, Nagisa Oshima. Cinematography: Toichiro Narushima. Production design: Shigenori Shimoishizaka. Music: Toru Takemitsu. In his comments on The Ceremony in Have You Seen...? David Thomson makes an admission that perhaps I myself don't keep enough in mind: "I have seen enough Japanese films to know that, much as I admire that national cinema, it is based on precepts that are strange to me." But Thomson also makes an important point when he likens the family in The Ceremony to those in "Faulkner or Greek tragedy." We are distanced from the tortured family narrative in the film not only by cultural differences, but also by the larger-than-life mythic quality of the personalities and events. The transgressive sexuality -- the pervasive incest in the Sakurada family -- and the rigid adherence to tradition, which reaches its most absurd point when an elaborate wedding is conducted with the bride in absentia, are on one level satiric indictments of Japanese culture, but on another level are statements about human obsessions that transcend national boundaries. Sometimes Oshima's attempt at this kind of transcendent mythmaking bogs The Ceremony down a bit, and the performers don't always rise to the demands of the material, losing their grip on the humanity of their characters and bringing in a whiff of pretentiousness to the enterprise. But it's a fascinating film to watch -- and often to listen to, when Toru Takemitsu's spiky score appears.

This is a scene from an exhibition of works held at Kiunkaku, a tangible cultural property designated by Atami City, as part of the ATAMI ART EXPO 2022. Since it was the same event, I used the same motif of fish from the waters around Atami as the glass art I painted in LUSCA Atami, but I completely changed the painting materials and techniques to match the environment. The music salon where I exhibited was originally built as a banquet hall. The large windows overlook the garden, which is often visited by wild birds and filled with brilliant blue light. I wanted to create a work that took advantage of this light, so I painted pictures on light-transmitting shoji paper and hung them like a curtain to display them. The driftwood arches supporting the paintings are the work of Shigehiro Yashiro, a woodworker living in Inatori. Violent Direct Action in the Unification Church in Korea
Seeing Hyung Jin Moon and Sanctuary Church members at the Capitol last week was no surprise. Not only because his own violent rhetoric that encourages martyrdom for Trump, but because “direct action” has been used by the Unification Church throughout its history. Many times these demonstrations were merely symbolic or peaceful, such as the Pure Love rallies and the “Forgive, Love, Unite” campaign, but other times the church has used force and violence to have their demands met.
Hyung Jin was emerging as a church leader, a year after publishing Bald Head and a Strawberry, when 700 Unification Church members occupied the offices of Dong-A Ilbo, a newspaper. According to a church journal:
“Unificationists’ violent demonstration against biased reporting (2006): This happened after the monthly magazine Shin Dong A published news that libeled the Unification Church after a reporter had secretly entered Chung Pyung. The story cited only the opinions of ex-Unification members without any official reflection of the church. Thereupon, about 700 Unification members demonstrated in front of the Shin Dong A building to ask the company’s apology; then they broke into the offices and destroyed some office materials. This incident was reported by 5 daily newspapers, and all articles were negative except for the Segye Times.” [1]
Tumblr media
This destructive demonstration rekindled the public memory of the church’s violence in Korea.
Tahk, a minister and anti-cult activist, was giving a talk in a Korean Christian church on May 3, 1985, when his car was immobilized and a bomb installed. When he came out and opened the door, the bomb exploded.
Just before the bomb exploded on  two vans belonging to the Unification Church Korean business called McCol were photographed leaving the scene of the crime.
Tumblr media
Even before this incident, Tahk had experienced repercussions for speaking out against the church. According to Pak Chung Hwa, “Mr. Tahk, who has continued his criticism of the Unification Church, was one day kidnapped by the KCIA and was beaten on his back. This left a big scar that will never go away in his life.”
In 1994, Tahk Myeong-hwan was beaten and murdered by members of a smaller cult, Yeongsaeng-kyo, as well as Im Hong-chin, a member of Dahn Yoga. That said, many believe Moon and the church were behind this murder, if not at least somehow connected. Tahk was murdered 4 weeks after Moon had named him as an opponent to church members. On the very same day, too, a man who had not listened to the instructions of Moon was also murdered.
This was a year after Pak Chung Hwa published “The Tragedy of the Six Marys,” which included many personal accounts of Moon’s corruption, and very negatively affected public perception church in Japan and Korea. (In 1995, the church paid Pak to publicly recount the book, despite much of the testimonies belonging to other ex-members.) In 1988 Yi Dae-bok gave a talk criticizing the Unification Church, after which he was abducted and beaten up for which he needed 40 days of hospital treatment.
Moon always maintained connections with both violent right-wing elements and organized crime throughout his career, in Korea, Japan, and the US. None of this is new. None of this is a surprise. Hyung Jin is barely a heretic.

He also later became a member of the Japanese parliament.).

BORIS ANNOUNCE “ABSOLUTEGO STUDIO SESSION 2018” + “BOOTLEG -FEEDBACKER-”
On the heels of the 2020 reissues on Third Man Records, Boris will self-release live tracks off each album this Bandcamp Friday (February 5, 2021).
Tumblr media
"Japanese metal luminaries Boris have announced an ongoing archival series, culling various rare and out-of-print releases from the band’s past." - Consequence of Sound
Kicking off 2021, in a nod to last year’s reissues of boris at last -feedbacker- and Absolutego on Third Man Records, momentous live takes of both of these compositions will be made available from Boris for the first time digitally this Friday, February 5th via Bandcamp.  Details can be found below for each release as Boris continues their prolific, unstoppable output.
Boris Absolutego Studio Session 2018:
Having taken part in the 2018 lineup of the annual Roadburn Festival in The Netherlands, Boris collaborated with their sworn friend Stephen O’Malley to perform their song “Absolutego.” Consistent with shows performed during their 25th anniversary as a band, a new version sounded entirely different from the studio release that emerged, much to the astonishment of the audience.
A studio session with Atsuo, Takeshi, and Wata was recorded as preparation for their live collaboration, and this studio recording is being released with absolutely no overdubs. The listener can experience the depth of variation from the recently re-released original recording to the version that erupted 25 years later.
boris bootleg -feedbacker-:
Originally released as a Japanese version only on DVD in 2005, limited to 300 copies. This was a live performance taken on October 16, 2004, at Vice Magazine’s 10 year anniversary event at “Skylight” in New York City. Death From Above 1979 were among the other bands that performed that night.
One composition, “boris at last -feedbacker-“, was performed live, and this version, remastered, will be available for the first time digitally. They had reached the boundary of what a 3-piece band can express, already acquiring an unwavering foundation. After this live performance, Boris came to be constantly touring overseas.
These 2 releases illustrate Boris's resolute attitude/decisiveness toward their high risk expression of “Crossing the sea to play only one song.”
The hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic put Boris’s collective engine into overdrive. Energetic activity should follow in 2021.
New music is constantly overflowing from Bandcamp, and many people assemble to support the music and artists. Their desire to protect music culture is felt directly by the bands.  Live shows and tours have become difficult during the current COVID-19 situation, but many people listening to these past recordings released on Bandcamp helps to support the band.  By all means please take this opportunity to listen.
Visit Boris on Bandcamp here.
