Evan leaned his head on his hand thoughtfully, like he was admiring a fussy kitten. Irritation sparked in their chest at the thought that he might be looking down on them, but it was snuffed out by the velocity of their heartbeat. "What? What's that look for?" "I'm just seeing why you and Nico are such good friends. You're equally pedantic," he said. Andie suppressed a growl. As a rule, the only people who read them like that were women over age fifty. "I ought to throw this drink in your face for that. You're lucky the mouth of this can is too narrow."  "Precisely what a pedantic person would say." He shook his head, voice breathy and judgmental. "Wow. Didn't realize you were such a salty bitch."  His snooty expression broke, and his shoulders quaked with laughter. They were broad shoulders, and Andie could see their muscle definition through his shirt (which was a truly heinous shade of magenta). His hair was thick, the color of straw that you might scatter across a garden bed to protect seedlings. Except, instead of coarse, it was gathered in fluffy curls that looked so soft, Andie had to fight the urge to touch. They shoved their libido away like it was a yappy terrier they were hiding in their shoulder bag on the bus.

Arnold, Eve (1912 - 2012)

The first woman to have joined the Magnum agency, in 1951, Eve Arnold had studied alongside Harper’s Bazaar’s Alexey Brodovitch and had first practiced fashion photography. She rapidly depicted portraits of numerous celebrities such as Malcolm X, Andy Warhol, Paul Newman or Jackie Kennedy but she also travelled the world to document the apartheid in South Africa or communism in China and Russia, interested as much in the wealthy than in the most humble. ‘I was poor and I wanted to show what poverty was; I am a woman and I wanted to know everything about women’ that is why the American photographer was the first to capture a birth for Life magazine or did she represent the veiled women of Orient. What most people have retained today are her photographs of Marilyn Monroe who had approached her by saying ‘If you could do that well with Marlene [Dietrich], can you imagine what you can do with me?’ Eve Arnold thus examined the actress as a reporter, capturing her freshness and fragility on set for John Huston’s Misfits or at home far from posed publicity shots. The photographer succeeded in showing how special the ordinary was and how pathetic the lives of glitterati could be.

Ezt most már tényleg majdnem teljesen elfelejtettem, de csináljak már végig egy évet, annyira jó lenne. Meg hát annyira jó lemezeket hallottam áprilisban, hogy ezt tényleg le kell írnom. Éreztem már hónap közben, és ahogy láttam előre, mik jönnek ki, hogy ez erős lesz, de itt volt több is, ami bele se fért (pl: SAULT, The Kahil El'Zabar Quartet, Silvana Estrada).

Alabaster DePlume - Gold - Go Forward in the Courage of Your Love (2022)

Nagyon vártam már ezt. Imádtam, éltem a To Cy & Lee minden egyes hangját, ami édeni, letisztult egyszerűségében is nagyon mély, megrázó lemez volt. Ezt a Gold nem tudja, de nem is akarja hozni. Masszívabb, változatosabb anyag, persze így is tele van pár perces instrumentális, mantrázós merengésekkel, de jut mellé jó pár bólogatós spoken word-ös és egyéb dinamikusabb darab is. A lélekemelő szónoklatok talán túl soknak, túl direktnek hathatnak, de nekem valahogy itt elfér, helye van, vagy talán jobb azt mondani, hogy autentikusan van benne ez az egész. Mindezekkel együtt is kiváló, egyedi, nagyon fontos lemez. Don’t forget you’re precious.

Fontaines D.C. - Skinty Fia (2022)

Nem tudom megállapítani azt, hogy mennyire nyújt bármiben is újat ez a zenekar, hajlok arra, hogy az igazán fontos karaktarjegyekben valószínűleg semmiben. Ennek ellenére rohadtul működik, mert állatul szól, baromi jók a dalok, és az egésznek bazi erős atmoszférája van, ami alól nagyon nehéz kibújni. Az előző két lemez is erős volt, de ez simán jobb azoknál. Jó barátom elmondása szerint élőben is rombolnak. El is hiszem. 

Sélène Saint-Aimé - Potomitan (2022)

Lemez utazás helyett, és a lemez, amit nagyon hallgatnék utazás közben is, főleg, ha oda mennék, ahová igazán passzol, azaz a Karib-tengerre, azon belül is Martinique szigetére, ahol Saint-Aimé élt a felvételek idején. Jó helynek tűnik átvészelni az elmúlt két évet. Na de a lemez maga elég varázslatos, egyszerre merül el az afro-karibi világban (főleg ritmikájában), a jazz történetben (még egy Charlie Parker feldolgozás is szerepel a dalok között), és a komolyzenében. 

Stromae - Multitude (2022)

Eddig is bírtam ezt a fickót, a slágereit szerettem is (a Cesaria Evorához írt ódáját kifejezetten), de ez a lemez szintlépés. Én nem untam egy percig se, pedig meghallgattam többször is, és kábé minden második szám instant sláger. Annyira érzi az afro-karibi zenei világot, hogy képes arra, hogy azzal együtt építsen fel egy dalt, és ne egy sematikus popszámra próbáljon rászabni valamit, csak azért, hogy az színesebbnek tűnjön a végén. Működik háttérzenének is, autózáshoz is, működik ha nyolc órán át dúdolom magamban, hogy “Riez, riez, riez, ouais, ouais, riez seulement”, és működik úgy is ha figyelek a részletekre, az apró megoldásokra (hát ez a vokál milyen már itt? hogy jön már a cavaquinho amott?). (Ja és még francia tanulásra is kiváló, de hát ez már csak az extra.) Stromae egy olyan popsztár, akire szüksége van a világnak.

Horace Andy - Midnight Rocker (2022)

Hát én nem vagyok annyira nagy dub-reggae fan, de ez baromi jó lett. Horace Andy hangja mondjuk szerintem nekem is elég erősen beégett a tudattalanomba a Massive Attack és az Easy Star All Stars lemezek miatt, ez biztos segített. Igazából nem nagyon tudok mit mondani, egyszerűen jólesik ezt hallgatni, és nézni ki a hetedikről a térre a napsütésben. 

The Manga Review, 5/13/22

April sales figures are in, and manga continues to dominate the NPD Adult Graphic Novels list. Though the list includes some perennial favorites–Berserk, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia—Spy x Family saw a big jump in sales after its anime debuted on Crunchyroll last month. ICv2’s Brigid Alverson points out that  “April marks the fourth consecutive month that manga has completely filled the chart of the top 20 Adult graphic novels in the book channel.” Manga sales aren’t quite as robust in comic book stores, but three titles made ComicsHub’s Top 20 Graphic Novels for April: Chainsaw Man (4), Kaiju No. 8 (16), and Spy x Family (20). With less than three weeks to go, Sam Sattin and Guruhiru’s Kickstarter campaign for Unico: Awakening has exceeded its pledge goal of $50,000. The story is “an homage to the God of Manga’s original messaging of social welfare and eco-consciousness.” [Kickstarter]

Good news for Moto Hagio fans: Fantagraphics will be re-printing the first volume of The Poe Clan this summer. While there’s no official release date for the new edition, the long-awaited second volume will be released on July 26, 2022. [Fantagraphics]

Warriors of the Salacian Rebellion

In late 2010 a large army from deep beneath the sea, coming from the underwater World of Salacia, came up to invade Dryland in rebellion against the Drylanders and their treatment of Salacia. Despite their defeat at the hands of Parker Zhou (Zhuge Liang), their warrior spirits persisted much to the awe of many.

In the years before the rebellion, many kings from previously participated in the five Battles of Kawanakajima against the Takeda Clan. A few years after, the Salacians began another rebellion that ultimately failed, then in the ensuing years, the Salacians decided to protect their world (or invade Dryland) as Kamen Riders.

This is a record of those who fought valiantly in the Salacian Rebellion of 2010. Not everyone could be recorded for various reasons, such as their absence at the time or the amount of warrior names that could be assigned to them, but they would eventually be recognised in the years to come.

Ian Pata y Belsy Quiñonez, figuras del u18 de Ecuador

En el Estadio Los Chasquis, en Quito, se desarrolló este fin de semana (15 y 16 de julio) el Campeonato Nacional u18 de Ecuador, que tuvo en la lanzadora Belsy Quiñonez a una de las autoras de la mejor expresión técnica. Campeona sudamericana de la categoría en lanzamiento de bala, el año pasado en Sao Paulo, Quiñonez alcanzó ahora una marca de 15.56 metros y fue subcampeona en disco (41.69), donde la vencedora Silvia Lara llegó a 42.80.  Ian Andrey Pata se consolidó como el valor más destacado entre los varones con sus triunfos en 200 metros (21.93), 400 metros (49.08) y 400 con vallas (53.80). También Frank Nazareno se destacó con sus victorias de 100 metros llanos (10.94) y salto en largo, al igual que el garrochista Andy Leither Espinoza, quien llegó a los 4.60 m. Entre los ganadores estuvieron Adrián Rodríguez (14.41 en 110 metros vallas), Iván Oña (48:07.72 en la marcha de 10 mil metros), Jholeixon Rodríguez (1.97 en salto en alto), Jordan Ayoví (52.06 en disco y 55.17 en jabalina), André Caza (51.82 en martillo) y Jefferson Paredes (5.757 puntos en el decathlon). Las pruebas femeninas de velocidad fueron ganadas por Marolyn Pastrana con 12.34 en 100 y Genesis Cañola con 2533 en 200, ientras que María Alejandra Castillo se impuso en los 100 metros vallas con 14.54. Otras ganadoras fueron Jomayra Tite en 2.000 con obstáculos (7:48.38), Karen Litardo (25:42.33 en la marcha de 5.000 metros), Silvana Behile (12.19 en salto triple), Josselyn Casanova (41.09 en jabalina) y Valeska Valencia (4.333 puntos en el  heptathlon). After leaving Unified Theory Press for the last time, Evan Brooks made it all the way to Sandy Boulevard before his brain finally rejoined his body. He stood, blinking up at the marquee to the Hollywood Theater, lightheaded enough to wonder if he was actually awake right now or if he'd just imagined it all.

When someone brushed past him, surrounded by a stink-cloud of skunk weed, he yelped.

"Arrr, you're blocking the crossroads, matey," said a dirty man in a frayed, stained red coat. There was a green wooden parrot somehow fixed to his shoulder, and he was wearing an eye patch, bandana, and high black combat boots. Yup. Jury was still out on whether he was hallucinating.

A woman in a fleece jacket and prescription sunglasses weaved around him, sighing dramatically. It was then that he realized this was all real, and he was having his personal crisis in one of the most inconvenient places possible to everyone around him. That point was underscored by a blaring horn to his left. Someone with a long black beard and a Blazers cap behind the wheel of a vintage BMW sneered at him.

"Okay, okay, fuck, I'm going," Evan said out loud.

"Go back to Palm Springs, cocksucker," the guy shouted out his open window.

"Don't knock it 'til you've tried it," Evan shouted back before he could reconsider, because apparently he was in self-destruct mode but also fuck that guy. Fortunately for him, the guy had already zipped around the corner before the words were out of his mouth.

Evan felt the inexorable laughter coming to a boil in his stomach. Fortunately, he made it all the way to the other side of the street before it came out of him in a continuous stream of cackles. The hysteria really took hold, as he stumbled over to the bench facing the doors of the theater.

He leaned his elbows on his knees and buried his face in his hands as he let the madness truly take over. Because he didn't have anything else to do for the rest of the day, or the foreseeable future.

He seriously just did that. He just quit his job. No two weeks notice, no formal letter of resignation—just pure spite and impulsiveness.
