Twelve thousand years ago is the moment when humans start becoming sedentary and abandon the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Soon, taming and domesticating animals is added in the mix, and our society as we have it today starts its journey. This was, indeed, the first major crisis of masculinity, perhaps even more drastic than the one that came about in the industrial society, where life became unbearably organized, systematized, and deprived of any danger and chance. The agricultural revolution meant that the man was no longer a hunter, but a farmer. Instead of chasing the pray animals – sometimes much larger and more powerful than he was – he was now tilling the soil, in constant fear of the elements, praying to the all mighty mother goddess. Both modern and contemporary man complains of emasculation – it is nothing compared to what the first agrarians went through. The difference in lifestyle brought about different diet as well, mostly made of grains and very seldom, farm animals. This was a drastic impact on the agrarian human – archeological evidence suggest that the agrarian man dramatically lost in size, muscle mass, bone density, just to name a few. The new man was physically weaker, smaller in stature, and of poorer health. His crisis of masculinity was physically obvious, unlike the one of the modern and contemporary man. He was, as compared to his ancestor hunter, smaller, weaker, stiffer, and slower; all evidence suggest that due to poorer diet, his cognitive capacities too were considerably lowered. This man, one could argue, truly did have a reason to feel that his masculinity was questioned. First day in Athens. 🇬🇷 I decided to follow the call of the goddess and re-route my Italian travels and research to Greece. And she did not disappoint.
