Four-eyed fish (Anableps anableps)
Burgers' Zoo, Arnhem
These odd looking fish have special eyes which allow them to see above and under the water's surface at the same time! In the wild, they swim along with the rising tide in search of their favorite food - insects that have fallen into the water. In case they end up on a mud bank when the tides recede, they have adapted to be able to survive on land for short periods of time.

yesterday I put my eclipse glasses on over the top part of my regular glasses so I could look up at the sky through the filters but also look down and still be able to see where I was walking and I said “I’m an anableps anableps!” and no one knew what I was talking about

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Calling the Anableps fishes “four-eyes” isn’t an insult-- these species actually have four eyes! Individuals have two eyeballs, and each eyeball has two pupils and two corneas. This allows the Anableps fishes to see above and below the water at the same time, and spot potential prey and predators twice as easily.

Rip-Chan
Tumblr media
This is Rip-Chan. I like him. He’s just awful. The worst.
Before the world ended thousands of years ago, he uploaded a copy of his mind to the internet, thus initiating hundreds of thousands of years of 24/7 brainrot. And like, he was already a degenerate, but now he’s SUPER DEGENERATE.
But now he is piloting around an old modified sexbot so he can bully 3D IRL people because he’s so desensitized to everything that only things with real permanent consequences make him feel anything anymore.
He enjoys corrupting people to go down a similar self-destructive path of excess and addiction. So he gets pretty peeved when our heroes manage to refuse temptation and banish his non-corporal ass back into the digital afterlife. Unfortunately for them, he can just get a new body, and they can't. (he's basically a cyberpunk demon)
Fun Fact: His favorite Japanese anime is Nagatoro. If you thought that was bad, his favorite Martian anablep is Bepalopidomopsis 2. And yes, he WILL casually reference and drop spoilers to both in normal conversation, even if you’re an illiterate wastelander living in a tribal post apocalyptic society who can’t afford interplanetary cable, he’s THAT kinda guy!
Fun Fact: He has exactly 69 million hours logged on his pirated copy of Ultrakill. He really wants to play more but can't bring himself to break that streak. He’s replayed SOMA literally tens of thousands of times. (these were both extremely old games when he was still human, he was a man of CULTURE).
Fun Fact: he's a mid tier streamer in the didgital afterlife

Ossaforms
Although the Ossaforms have no true approximation of a spinal cord, they have a centralized nervous system and their bodies are supported by several connected rib-like arches in their torso which house the nerves. These flexible structures allow for a wide range of movement while also providing enough support to grow large.
The ancestral Ossaform was a small, fish-like animal that lived in the shallows of the Great Southern Sea. Aquatic Ossaforms have four bony fins and two eyes, with a wide variety of jaw types. Terrestrial Ossaforms evolved from a strange semi-aquatic animal that had eyes divided into two parts, similar to Earth’s Anableps anableps. This allowed them to have one set of eyes out of the water to look for prey while the lower set kept watch for predators. Eventually, these two eye hemispheres split into two entirely separate eyeballs.
Today, all terrestrial Ossaforms have several things in common. They have two eyes on each side, one which has specialized to see the red/infrared end of the light spectrum and one which has evolved to see the blue/ultraviolet end. However, there is little overlap between the two, rendering them colorblind in much of the visible spectrum. The cartilaginous crest on their head functions as the ear. Many species, including the Xaraka, also have the ability to detect electrical activity with this crest. Jaws contain sharpened bony plates which act as teeth, much like the placoderms of ancient Earth. Originally, all Ossaforms had four limbs, but can now be categorized into quadrupeds and bipeds.
Tumblr media
Pictured: the Zandrake, a domesticated Pennipesa kept in almost all Xaraka societies.
As their names suggest, the quadrupeds have four limbs. The bipeds walk on two legs, and the front pair has either atrophied to the point of uselessness or completely disappeared. The quadrupeds were once the most diverse and dominant group of animals in the south, but the mass extinction 155 million years ago decimated many of them, resulting in the quadrupeds becoming a fragmented group of distantly related animals. The bipeds make up much of the current population of large herbivores and predators, and all have one or two toes similar to the hoof-claws of the Rostertia. Incredibly, this arrangement seems to have evolved independently in the two groups.

What's an anablep?
Anableps is a genus of fish, known collectively as four-eyed fishes. Their eyes are on top of and raised above their head, divided into two parts. The two pupils in each eye allow them to see below and above the water surface at the same time!

Thinking About Thinking
The Anableps is a type of fish found in Central and South America. It is also a metaphor I use in my training and writing. Its local nickname is ‘the four-eyed fish. It doesn’t literally have four eyes but its two eyes each have two divisions that function, effectively, as separate eyes. It’s primarily a surface-dwelling floater and, as such, can be preyed upon from above by birds and from below…
