3Think covers Faye Wong’s classic "Lau Fei Fei" (2021)
In response to a call for Covid-19 relief, the Hong Kong recording industry body IFPI rolled out The Music Must Go On project to help the industry regain confidence in sustaining business. The project’s funding is supported by Create Hong Kong (“CreateHK”) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  The Hong Kong Recording Industry Alliance Limited (HKRIA) and the Music Publishers Association of Hong Kong Limited (MPA) joined as supporting organizations.
3Think, a 4-member band, decided to re-interpret the classic Faye Wong song "Lau Fei Fei" which was originally released in 1993. The reason is obvious. This "non-love song" is well known to Hong Kong music fans and part of their collective memory of the 1990s. It was chosen to pay tribute [to the original artists] and the lyrics have a strong sense of irony about the entertainment industry, which is surprising. It is also very interesting how it echos the current situation of today’s pandemic. Everyone really wants to go out, but there is no “freedom”.
"Lau Fei Fei" was included on the album "One Hundred Thousand Whys?" released in September 1993. It was Faye Wong's sixth album. Although she was still known as Wong Jing Man at the time, this record was definitely a turning point for her when she removed her stage name and returned to her true identity. In the four years after her debut in 1989 to returning to Hong Kong from the United States, Faye Wong’s songs, such as "However That Day", "Everything", "Still Waiting", "Paris Eiffel Tower", "Because of Him" and the super hit "Fragile Woman" were almost all exclusively love songs with a strong commercial flavor. That was until "One Hundred Thousand Whys?". Regardless of whether the songs on this album were original or covers, one of the producers - Alvin Leong -  carefully selected songs which highlighted Faye Wong’s tendency to express herself. Such as Tori Amos' "Silent All These Years" and The Police's "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" which were adapted into "Cold War" and "Do Do Da Da" respectively.
Looking back at history, "Lau Fei Fei" created another wave of career peaks for Faye Wong in the music industry after "Fragile Woman”. Back then, she wore a transparent slip dress and "pineapple head" at the 1993 Chik Chak and RTHK award ceremonies, which shocked the major media and citizens of Hong Kong. These moments occurred almost 30 years ago, yet they are still fresh in our memories.
"Lau Fei Fei" is a 100% locally-made original Cantonese song, composed and arranged by CY Kong, and written by Soft Hard under the pseudonyms of Mok Hoyan and Kenix Kwok. The style was avant-garde and the lyrics get stuck in your head. This is exactly the reason why 3Think chose to cover it for this project. They explained: "Faye Wong and Soft Hard are not only my childhood memories, but also my favorite singer and artists. "Lau Fei Fei" is an unprecedented collaboration between them and they felt very avant-garde together. It’s a rare opportunity to be able to cover this in our style. I believe it will be a lot of fun. It is also an opportunity to pay tribute to our three predecessors."
Of course, the lyrics are also their main consideration for covering the song. Reading the lyrics carefully, it is not difficult to see that Soft Hard were obviously borrowing from Faye Wong’s inner monologue to satirize the strange environment of the entertainment circle. "But in this modern era, the lyrics have another flavor. While we are at home during the pandemic, everyone really wants to go out and "fly", but we are never free. When will we be able to "fly"?!"
After deciding to cover this song, the next step was to find the right sound. "We hope that this version of "Lau Fei Fei" will have our own flavor and our own feeling. In fact, the original song itself is already very playful, and Soft Hard's lyrics are very difficult to adapt.”  They invited the guitarist Goro Wong who had worked with another band "Zarahn" and the famous composer Adrian Chan to produce and arrange the song.
Faye Wong’s singing is irreplaceable. In order to overcome preconceived expectations, Adrian Chan, one of the producers, used a "trick". "The biggest challenge was singing the main vocal part. How do you turn a divine comedy into a version that has the flavor of 3Think? At that time, Adrian asked me to try singing with a low octave and a high octave. And the whole process was to keep alternating. It was really impossible to sing, but when it came out, the effect was  quite satisfactory, and it was all fun."
