potentially controversial take bc i know Aleah is the ncaa-piked-deltchev fav: when i see Rifda Irfanaluthfi beat her all i think is "good"
(i know it's only happened because of composition problems and falls on Aleah's end but idc... in fact, i hope it happens again)
something something perspectives of ncaa difficulty etc being used to undercut the effort and work of gymnasts (and gymnastics programs overall) from small federations something something
Rifda beating Aleah multiple times flies in the face of that nonsense and i'm glad

'I'm in Love with the Villainess' Anime - Episode 1 Review
An astounding and hilarious first outing for the series with the power to revolutionize Yuri
Tumblr media
We are finally here, the long-awaited and much anticipated first episode of Platinum Vision’s I’m in Love with the Villainess anime aired on Tokyo MX and is streaming everywhere outside of Asia with a plethora of dubbing options, including English, on day one on Crunchyroll.
The first outing covers most of the events of the light novel’s first chapter, or the first three chapters of the manga, at a rapid but steady and not overwhelming pace. At this rate, the anime should be able to cover much of the series’ first arc, or the first two out of five books, in a single cour. Perhaps a bit less, depending on which of the story’s various adventures it elects to include. This is an exciting possibility, to be sure, as the story is a character-driven, socially mindful, and expertly written and, despite its fantasy setting, an exceptionally relevant tale of romance, socio-economic inequality, and of course, queerness.
Tumblr media
While the first arc of Villainess is a triumph, it would be a shame not to see at least some of the developments from the extra chapters that lead into the second story, like (spoilers for the end of volume 2) Rae and Claire’s wedding and their adopted twin daughters May and Aleah. If we are lucky, perhaps they will appear in the final episode or, dare to dream, a second season (end of spoilers).
Now, onto the show itself. For those who, for whatever reason, have not read Inori’s masterpiece, I’m in Love with the Villainess follows Rae Taylor. A salary worker who dies and is reincarnated as the protagonist of her favorite otome game, Revolution. However, Rae has no interest in any of the game world’s three eligible royal bachelors and has eyes only for the game villainess Claire François. Armed with exceptionally magical ability, Rae sets out determined to secure a happy ending for her beloved Claire against the coming revolution and perhaps win her heart in the process.
Now, the opening of I’m in Love with the Villainess is the series' weakest moment in all mediums, which, considering episode one’s outstanding quality, only highlights just how superb the Yuri masterpiece is as a whole. Even with its need to establish the setting, characters, and premise of the series, the premiere managed to be an excellent introduction and set the bar high with lots of laughs, entertainment, and service between our two leads.
Tumblr media
I watched the Japanese audio, and Yu Serizawa and Karin Nanami are fantastic in these roles, with Serizawa playing up Rae’s teasing adoration and borderline masochism at full blast, and Nanami explicitly giving voice to Claire’s arrogance and frustration. She even manages to deliver a perfect Ojou-style laugh to seal the character’s elite status and lean into the show’s use of otome tropes. And having the leads sing the excellent opening and ending themes is just icing on the cake.
Speaking of tropes, while Ironi’s original work is a genre-defying masterpiece that broke the Yuri mold, it is never afraid to play with the genre’s iconography and its otome game setting. Every other scene had another allusion, including to the book’s cover. As always, I am likely overeager to see connections, however intentional they may be, but the academy’s halls harken to otome staples, the bells and strings of the first scene's soundtrack conjured blistering memories of Strawberry Panic (perhaps a sacrilegious comparison to make but I digress), and even an areal shot of the campus was another check mark on my “Scenic Yuri” theory.
Now, as mentioned, I’m in Love with the Villainess has to establish the groundwork here, and narratively, these are the weakest moments, often direct exposition, with a few exceptions like Rae’s conversation with her roommate Mash about maintaining Claire’s attention. The narration is at least accompanied by relevant and creative, if perhaps limited, animation. But to their credit, these moments are succinct, existing only as long as they have to in order to provide the necessary information and get out of the way for what matters most: the characters.
Tumblr media
Rae and Claire are front and center from the very get-go, and there is little time wasted in showcasing Rae’s intense bottom energy or establishing Claire’s elitism and bewildered anger towards Rae’s excitement in the face of Claire’s carefully calculated cruelty. It is a montage of silly and fun competitions between the two that had me laughing and smiling all the way through, as the Yuri was present in full force, and gives glimpses at the mutual obsession the women have for each other that will soon blossom into a wonderful romance.
These early story beats have a light tone and focus on the bullying, teasing, and rivalry between Rae and Claire, a dynamic that previously and understandably made a subset of readers somewhat uncomfortable. However, assuming the anime unfolds in a similar manner to the manga and light novels, the narrative will explore meatier, heavier subject matter and a far deeper lesbian romance, all without losing its sense of fun and adventure. The next episode or two will be incredibly telling - as the source material is perhaps the most profound and forthright depictions of LGBTQ identity in Yuri, and that all starts with a pivotal conversation that, if it is included, will be coming up shortly.
Tumblr media
Overall, I am incredibly excited for this series. The first episode is everything I had hoped for out of an adaptation of one of my favorite works of all time, save the animation, which is average at best. While there is a lot more to see, and we will have to wait to know if I’m in Love with the Villainess lives up to its incredible potential and source material, I am extremely hopeful. We have one of the funniest, most thoughtful, and queerest works of Yuri transformed into a stunning anime project unlike anything that has come before and offers the chance at not just a new Yuri “gateway” but to continue the work of its source material in revolutionizing the genre.
Ratings: Story – 8 Characters – 10 Art – 5 LGBTQ – We shall see… Sexual Content – 3 Final – 8
I'm in Love with the Villainess is streaming on Crunchyroll with English sub/dub.

Saltburn: PFF Closes With a Gem
For three consecutive years, the Philadelphia Film Festival has allocated some of its most coveted slots to vehicles that showcased Irish talent. In 2021, the festival’s opening night film was Belfast, the loosely autobiographical work, penned and directed by Kenneth Branagh. It recounted his childhood in Northern Ireland’s capital city. In 2022, the festival kicked off with The Banshees of Inisherin. The tale was set on a fictitious island in Galway Bay, off the western coast of Ireland. It starred the estimable duo of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as life-long friends, whose relationship becomes abruptly truncated. This year, in its 32nd edition, the festival’s closing night film was Saltburn. Dublin native, Barry Keoghan, is cast as the film’s protagonist.
Set in 2006, Saltburn is at once a jocular, albeit scathing, satire of the British ruling class and a psychological thriller. It centers on Oliver Quick (Keoghan), an incoming freshman at prestigious Oxford University. Unlike his posh classmates, Oliver hails from a modest background and is a socially maladroit dweeb. His parents are apparently addled with alcoholism and drug addiction. He has no siblings or other familial support to speak of. Oliver is an obvious candidate for ostracism by his more privileged peers.
In the film’s prologue, Oliver speaks retroactively of the ambivalent, tortured, and unrequited feelings that he had harbored for Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). Felix is a strikingly handsome alpha male, whose family boasts a centuries-old aristocratic pedigree. Felix is accustomed to people fawning over him. In particular, wherever he goes, he is avidly pursued by a bevy of pulchritudinous coeds. Meanwhile, Felix remains totally oblivious to Oliver’s homoerotic longings for him.
The two lads meet serendipitously, when Jacob experiences a flat tire on his bicycle. He is distressed by the prospect of being tardy for a meeting with his new faculty advisor. As Oliver rides past, he notices Felix’s predicament. Oliver veers from the pathway and graciously offers to lend his own bicycle to help the immobilized stranger. Felix expresses his deep-seated gratitude.
Felix defies audience expectations, when he actually takes pains to incorporate Oliver into his elite social clique. As summer break beckons, Felix magnanimously invites Oliver to sojourn at his family home, the eponymous Saltburn. It turns out that the family residence is a sprawling Medieval castle from a bygone era. Drayton House, an edifice situated in Northamptonshire, afforded an ideal site for location shooting. Construction of the spectacularly opulent estate began around 1300 and was repeatedly revised thereafter. Shortly after the house was erected, the original owner of the magnificent structure was issued a license to build ramparts and crenellations as part of a protective wall around the residence.
When Felix gives a tour of the estate to Oliver, he parenthetically references family lore. As a vestige of a tryst that the notoriously licentious Henry VII once had while visiting the estate, the monarch’s desiccated seminiferous fluids are reputed to remain embedded in the mattress in one of the guest rooms. Imagine living in a home with such a juicy historical tidbit attached to it.
Oliver soon meets the residents of Saltburn, a menagerie of well-drawn and altogether eccentric characters. Felix’s immediate family consists of his mother, Elsbeth (Rosamund Pike); his father, Sir James (Richard E. Grant); and his sister, Venetia (Alison Oliver). They are augmented by Felix’s snide biracial cousin, Farleigh Start (Archie Madekwe), who also matriculates at Oxford, and a non-family hanger-on, literally known as "Poor Dear" Pamela (Carey Mulligan). All of the thespians convincingly embody the solipsistic sense of entitlement that is routinely exhibited by upper-class British twits.
However, ultimately it is Keoghan, who delivers a particularly delicious performance that anchors the film. He adroitly captures the evolution of his screen character over the course of the film’s protracted narrative trajectory. Last year, Keoghan as well as his cast-mate, Brendan Gleeson, each scored a supporting Oscar nomination for their respective roles in the aforementioned The Banshees of Inisherin. Keoghan portrayed a cognitively impaired villager in the film. Here, Keoghan demonstrates his versatility, while enlivening a far different role. He establishes that he is capable of carrying a feature film as its lead.
Saltburn is the sophomore venture of Emerald Fennell. In 2020, she made a successful transition from actor/showrunner to screenwriter/director/co-producer with her debut feature, Promising Young Woman. The film generated an Oscar for Fennell’s Best Original Screenplay along with nominations culled for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Carey Mulligan, who as noted plays a juicy supporting role in Saltburn), and Best Editing. Here, Fennell shows impressive growth as a filmmaker. Her screenplay is chocked full of plot twists and apt metaphorical constructs. Fennell makes efficacious use of dramatic foreshadowing and misdirection. Following a faux denouement, Fennell uses a double epilogue to mount a startling montage of events, juxtaposed with a memorable true finale. In her role as director, Fennell evokes strong performances from her entire ensemble cast and handles the film’s frequent tonal shifts with dexterity.
The production values of Saltburn are superb. Cinematographer, Linus Sandgren (La La Land), makes adroit use of light, mirrors, and reflections to fashion a litany of mindboggling images. His use of a 1:33:1 aspect ratio creates the sensation that the viewer is a voyeur, who is surreptitiously spying on the most intimate machinations of the film’s onscreen characters. The editing by Victoria Boydell keeps the pacing taut and the audience guessing what will transpire next. The evocative score by Anthony Willis (M3gan) provides an excellent complement to the visual text of the film. The choice of period pop hits buttresses the film’s sense of time and place.
For all my enthusiasm for Saltburn, I would be remiss if I did not provide a caveat to prospective viewers. The film includes explicit dialogue as well as repeated depictions of drug use and decidedly twisted psychosexual expression. One vignette involves a libertine, who is ruefully disparaged as “sexually incontinent,” and her liaison with an accommodating paramour. Another scene depicts more “mundane” intercourse. These carnal interludes are not gratuitously ribald. Instead, they capture the sublimated urges of various screen characters as well as the intolerant deprecations of their more priggish detractors.
After appearing at the Philadelphia Film Festival, both Belfast and The Banshees of Inisherin each went on to accrue a plethora of Academy Award nominations as well as other accolades. Although Saltburn is a far more polarizing film, it is richly deserving of similar recognition.

Rifda Irfanaluthfi is a pioneering gymnast from Indonesia and has a very strong chance of being the first Indonesian woman to qualify for the Olympics.
She beat former US national team gymnast Aleah Finnigan at the Southeast Asian Games taking the AA title. The reason I have been thinking about her this morning is that if you try to google the results of that competition it requires quite a lot of refinement to find anything about Irfanaluthfi while there is plenty of results with Finnigan's name in the headlines.
And today as I sat down to watch the 2023 Asian Championships and everyone was excited about the Philippines team that was stacked with 2 former US national team members (including Finnigan) and a top level L10 who had been recruited from the United States I started to gently point out that Irfanaluthfi was someone to watch. I was told that sure she beat Finnigan at the SEA games but this was a different year and that the reason people talked about Finnigan and not Irfanaluthfi was "charisma".
Well Irfanaluthfi finished the day as the top non-Chinese/non-Korean scorer in the Asian championships. One spot ahead of Finnigan but by the comparatively wide margin of .9.
Maybe the gymternet will stop treating her like an after thought or someone who only won the SEA Games AA because Finnigan lost it. I am certainly in no hope that the fandom will realize that no NCAA gymnastics is not "world class"--and in particular when talking about NCAA transitioning into elite you should ask questions about bars which are the most different between international and college gymnastics.
But for now... can appreciate this young woman.

i saw your conversation with samkerrworshipper so now i’ve got to ask, who are some of your favorite elite gymnasts or collegiate gymnasts?
ooo fun!
for elite i would say would say aliya mustafina, aly raisman and really every member of the ‘fierce five’, larisa iordache, angelina melnikova, and of course, simone biles
my favorite collegiate gymnast of all time is kyla ross, hands down.

for college i would say:
retired: madison kocian, norah flatley, maggie nichols, trinity thomas, felicia hano, nia dennis, sarah finnegan, alyssa baumann
current: aleah finnegan, haleigh bryant, frankie price, grace mccallum, maile o’keefe, margzetta frazier, konnor mcclain, jade carey, sloane blakely, leanne wong, riley mccusker
i watch way more college gymnastics nowadays than elite gymnastics

V GAGE of Aleah to not do a floor leap series and lose CR. Al must be proud.
( v serious making an easy elite leap combo instead of keeping the ncaa leap & jump isn’t insane feat for someone like her, it’s the split leap thru to whatever….)

maybe controversial (?) and maybe just exposing my own biases, but I don’t see why people are so upset about Aleah not making it to trials (unless it’s just cuz they stan her) cuz day 1 she fell two times on beam, on her vault, and on bars. she doesn’t have the former world champian/olympian thing going for her like chellsie and morgan and afaik she’s not coming back from an injury. though we know all elite gymnasts are dealing with injury to some extent. I do like her form and unique skills am excited to see her in NCAA.

1. “ As someone who mostly watches elite gym and has so far only gotten attached to the UCLA team, next year's NCAA is going to be so hard to choose who to root for, with Riley, Morgan and Leanne at Florida, Emma, Ana, Brooklyn and Jordan at UCLA, Suni at Auburn, Grace, Kara & Amelie at Utah... I want so much success for all of them “
2. “ NCAA in the upcoming years is gonna be exciting with Riley, Morgan, Suni, Jordan, Emma, Emily, Leanne, Shilese, Aleah, Jade, Kara, Grace, and Amelie! “

Manifesting OU to come 4th next yr and be a full point behind LSU, Florida and Michigan without counting any major errors :) also manifesting ncaa to fix the code so OU can't get away with those ugly ass squats. Also can they please fix the code for floor so you need an E pass to start from a 10.
thinking about the likes of morgi, riley, suni, leanne, aleah, all the other elites im forgetting lol, being in the mix next year and everyone literally going 9.95+ and scores being even more meaningless than before
