Laguna is one of the provinces in the Philippines, that rich with culture, art and history are found. Nature lovers love going to this province for Mount Banahaw and Mount Makiling are situated within its boundaries. It is also home for the lakes (Sampaloc and Palakpakin), falls (Majayjay Falls) and rivers. Old churches (St. John the Baptist Church in Liliw and St. James the Apostle Church in Paete) and Spanish houses are also part of the province’s charismatic beauty. Thankfully, I have roots in this beautiful province.
Sampaloc Lake is one of the seven beautiful lakes in San Pablo City in Laguna. It’s the largest among them, too. But what makes it a top tourist draw this side of the province is the gorgeous view it provides, as well as the various activities tourists can do around the area.
With a total circumference of 3.7 kilometers, the lake is popular with runners who want to work out a sweat while being close to nature. It’s easy to find, because it’s located very near the San Pablo City Hall.
Unfortunately, the water in Sampaloc Lake is not suitable for swimming. However, visitors can still enjoy lots of activities such as taking photos, eating street food (like isaw and kwek-kwek), renting bicycles, or sampling the local cuisine in one of the restaurants around the lake.
There are lots of tilapia, bangus, carp, and several species of shrimps that abound in the lake, so it’s likely that you’ll come across a vendor selling newly caught fish.
According to legend, the lake was created because an old woman, who happened to have a giant Sampaloc tree in her garden, drew away an old man (who is a diwata in disguise) seeking help for his grandson. After this, a thundering noise and heavy rain ensued, sinking the entire orchard, filling it with water, and turning it into a lake.
Tumblr media
How to get here?
City of San Pablo is very accesible also to any type of land vehicle and if you own a vehicle and figure out where is the exact location of Lake Sampaloc, the lake is located beside Provincial Capitol of San Pablo and Dona Leonila Park. Just pin in to your navigation map “Old Capitol Building of San Pablo City” because if you will pin to your navigation map the lake sampaloc there is a big chance that you will take around the lake and reach a private property where there is no viewdeck to enjoy the nice scenery of the lake.
If you're interested to visit and take a tour at Lake Sampaloc, for those people from the north, take a Bus Ride or Van from Manila with the Sigboard Lucena/Tagkawayan/Lopez/Calauag/San Pablo and tell the driver or conductor to drop you at City of San Pablo where they can drop you at City Medical of San Pablo or San Pablo City Plaza or beside Cathedral Parish of Saint Paul the First Hermit, and from the drop off points you can rent a tricycle going to lake sampaloc. For those people from the south, take a bus ride or van with signboard LRT Buendia/Cubao/Alabang/Turbina and tell to the driver or conductor to drop you to City Of San Pablo and from there you drop by to City Medical of San Pablo or San Pablo City Plaza or beside Cathedral Parish of Saint Paul the First Hermit and don’t forget to pray before your planned trip here to the city of seven lakes and enjoy.

Crown Street Kitchen by Chef Miko Aspiras Offers New All-Day Australian Breakfast Menu
Tumblr media
Highly-acclaimed Celebrity Chef Miko Aspiras has opened a new restaurant down south that serves an all-day Australian breakfast menu and lots more. There may be several other breakfast restaurants in Metro Manila, but this one stands out for introducing the Australian way of enjoying a hearty breakfast any time of the day.
Tumblr media
Crown Street Kitchen by Chef Miko Aspiras opened just a few months ago at the Molito Lifestyle Center in Alabang. In partnership with Visum Ventures, Inc. headed by Filipino-Australian John Michael Hilton, this new restaurant is fast becoming a popular meeting and dining spot for foodies and families living in the south.
Tumblr media
The restaurant is open daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Guests can enjoy their breakfast menu any time of the day. Plush sofa chairs and comfortable seats make dining at Crown Street Kitchen a cozy and relaxing experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hungry Kat was invited to sample some of the new menu items that Chef Miko had prepared for Crown Street Kitchen. Together with us was our good friend, PR and media specialist Spanky Enriquez.
Tumblr media
Renowned pastry chef Miko Aspiras is sharing his Australian experience with the Filipinos at Crown Street Kitchen. Chef Miko worked as the Executive Pastry Chef at Hilton Sydney for a couple of years, and this new menu is a compilation of his work and life experiences in Australia.
Tumblr media
We started with a few of their signature drinks. The Chocolate Strawberry Oat Latte is a unique and refreshing beverage that combines two of my favorite items, chocolates and strawberries!
Tumblr media
You can also choose to grab a cocktail from Crown Street Kitchen's sister restaurant upstairs, Salt & Ice, which we first visited at their Uptown BGC branch. The Hajimaru is a colorful concoction with roku, campari, strawberry, and sakura.
Tumblr media
Now it's time to sample some of Chef Miko's appetizers. The Garlic Focaccia is a savory pastry that really pops out with its flavors. This would be great for breakfast or even for merienda. The fluffy Italian bread is topped with sesame seeds, local honey, and whipped ricotta.
Tumblr media
The Tuna Loin Crudo is also a lovely item with its raw tuna finished with pomelo, herb oil, and balsamic vinegar. It's like a sashimi and ceviche rolled into one.
Tumblr media
One of our favorites that evening was the Mushroom Toast. This simple dish comes with a symphony of flavors featuring mushroom trio on top of toasted sourdough drizzled with truffle sauce.
Tumblr media
If you truly want a taste of Australia, go and order the Toasty. This house-made sourdough bread comes with Australian butter, and Vegemite.
Tumblr media
So what exactly is Vegemite? I had heard of this a few times before but we had never tried it until today. Vegemite is a dark-brown, nutrient-rich paste made of extract of yeast and vegetables which is widely enjoyed in Australia.
Tumblr media
Chef Mico even demonstrated how he enjoys his Vegemite. Just place a few scoops on your bread together with butter and you are good to go. He said that he makes this for breakfast everyday while he was in Australia.
Tumblr media
Now let's try some of the pastas. The Spaghetti Vongole is a popular Italian dish with its spaghetti pasta cooked with clams, garlic, white wine, and chili flakes. This has a bit of a spicy kick which everyone seemed to enjoy.
Tumblr media
There's also the Pappardelle Lamb Ragu, a rich and meaty pasta dish cooked with slowly braised lamb ragu, the ultimate Italian comfort food. This Succulent lamb shoulder is slowly braised with onions, carrots, celery, tomatoes, & hardy herbs for a meaty combination.
Tumblr media
We all loved the Penne Alla Vodka Prawn with Chili which comes with generous servings of prawns. It's not as spicy as I thought it would be so no worries for me.
Tumblr media
Australians are very proud of their meaty barbecues so the Aussie Barbie is the best way to experience Australian cuisine. This big bad platter comes with an assortment of meats and seafood including beef, chicken, sausages, and shrimp.
Tumblr media
Everyone knows that I am a big steak lover so my favorite dish was obviously the Tenderloin Steak with Pumpkin Purée. This gorgeous beef is cooked perfectly and served medium rare.
Tumblr media
For desserts, we tried several of Chef Miko's tempting cakes and pastries. The Banana Bread Toastie comes with caramelized bananas and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Tumblr media
There's also the Orange Ricotta Cheesecake and Chef Miko's signature Chocolate Cake to complete our adventurous journey to the Land Down Under.
Tumblr media
We would like to thank Chef Miko Aspiras for hosting our Australian culinary expedition and showing us a slice of the Aussie life. Crown Street Kitchen is a great new addition to the growing lineup of foodie destinations in Alabang so make sure to drop by if you happen to be visiting the south

The Best Must Try Restaurants in Alabang
The Barangay of Alabang has risen much from its modest origins as an agricultural district to its present status as a major commercial hub of Muntinlupa City. For the locals of the barangay and visitors who may be living close by such as in a condo in Las Piñas, Alabang has much to offer, especially in its food culture.
As the beating economic heart of Muntinlupa City, many businesses have sprung up in Alabang ever since it had allowed the development of large-scale commercial real estate projects like the Filinvest Corporate City and the Madrigal Business Park. Among these establishments were high-end popular restaurants, which have not only invigorated the spread of traditional dishes but international cuisine as well to the benefit of the people's taste buds. Whether one is shopping at Molito Lifestyle Center, having a lovely stroll at Ayala Alabang, or spending time with the family at Westgate Center, there is always a great place for a memorable food trip nearby.

Korean Flavors at Dookki in Alabang
DOOKKI is a Korean Restaurant in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. There are many hotels located around this amazing restaurant. Find out the website here @alabanghotels
Korean cuisine is known for its distinct flavors and rich variety of dishes. Here are some popular Korean foods:
Kimchi: A staple of Korean cuisine, kimchi is a fermented side dish made from vegetables like Napa cabbage, radish, or cucumber. It is seasoned with chili pepper, garlic, ginger, and other spices.
Bibimbap: A mixed rice dish topped with assorted vegetables, meat (usually beef or chicken), and a fried egg. It is served with gochujang (a spicy red chili paste) and mixed together before eating.
Bulgogi: Thinly sliced marinated beef that is grilled or stir-fried. The meat is typically tender and slightly sweet, thanks to a marinade made with soy sauce, sugar, garlic, sesame oil, and other ingredients.
Japchae: A stir-fried dish made with glass noodles made from sweet potato starch, various vegetables, and thinly sliced meat (optional). It is often seasoned with soy sauce and sesame oil.
Samgyeopsal: A popular Korean BBQ dish consisting of thick slices of pork belly, grilled at the table. It is often enjoyed by wrapping the meat in lettuce leaves, along with garlic, onions, and ssamjang (a spicy dipping sauce).
Tteokbokki: Spicy rice cakes cooked in a gochujang-based sauce. It is a popular street food in Korea and can sometimes be accompanied by fish cakes, vegetables, or boiled eggs.
Haemul Pajeon: A savory pancake made with a variety of seafood such as shrimp, squid, and clams, along with green onions and a batter of wheat flour and eggs.
Jjajangmyeon: A Chinese-Korean dish consisting of wheat noodles topped with a thick black bean sauce, stir-fried with diced pork or seafood and various vegetables.
Sundubu-jjigae: A spicy tofu stew made with soft tofu, vegetables, seafood, and/or meat. It is often served bubbling hot in a stone bowl and accompanied by rice and banchan (side dishes).
These are just a few examples of the many delicious dishes you can find in Korean cuisine. The emphasis on fresh ingredients, intense flavors, and communal sharing make Korean food a delight to try.

Sobra Cafe, Sobra Experience
This is my second time to dine in Sobra Cafe. I really had a great experience last time so when my friend asked me to accompany her in Sobra Cafe, I didn’t hesitate to go with her because I know that they serve good food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My friend drove from Imus to Alabang just to dine at  Sobra Cafe and she indeed got a “SOBRA” experience.
It was a Sunday night and the only available seats were outside of the cafe. We took the outdoor seating and made our order, everything was good until the weather suddenly changed. Raindrops started and then the group behind us requested to be transferred, then the other customer transferred on their own to the covered seatings. We couldn’t transfer as there are no other available seats for us to transfer on our own and we already have food on our table, and since they were assisting the group behind us, we assumed that they are just going to assist them first and then us for the transfer because it’s evident that we’re starting to get wet due to the raindrops.
Unfortunately, no one assisted us and we tried calling their attention but no one came. So I personally went inside and asked for a “bill out” as it’s starting to rain and our food is getting wet.
I’m not sure if it’s the manager or supervisor who approached us after. He told us that he’s going to check upstairs if there’s an available seat. I firmly said right away that we’re leaving. Then my friend asked why no one assisted us, then the guy from Sobra Cafe said that it’s because we didn’t ask.
Like what? You already knew the situation, shouldn’t you at least initiate to ask if we’re okay or if we would like to transfer? Then later on, he said that they can’t transfer us because they don’t know if there are available seats, and he added that he doesn’t want us to get wet but he wants to check first if there are available seats.
I told him that we and the food already got wet. That’s what happened. If I didn’t stood up on my own and went inside to call their attention, no one would. I already had an experience before in a rooftop bar in BGC wherein suddenly it rained.
The first thing that they did was to assist us to transfer in a covered area along with our orders. Then when we are already in the covered area, that’s the time that they decided where we can seat and continue eating.
See the difference?
I really got pissed when the guy from Sobra cafe said, “Then I apologize”. The way he said it, insincere and with emphasis as if that he HAS TO APOLOGIZE JUST TO FINISH THE DISCUSSION BUT INSISTING IT AT FIRST THAT THE REASON WHY WE DIDN’T GET TRANSFERRED IS BECAUSE WE DID NOT ASK.
He said that they’re losing customers when it’s raining because they don’t have an umbrella. And yes, indeed you will continue to lose customers with that kind of service.
I know that you’re not a five star dining restaurant like the others that I’ve been but at least, have a good customer service as we are a paying customer.
It’s unfortunate that this is the kind of SOBRA experience that my friend got after driving from Imus just to have this kind of dining experience after her birthday.

16:20 | June 11, 2022 (Alabang, Philippines)
We planned to visit the National museum on the day of our anniversary - yet a day together is just too short, so we made a reservation in Alabang around Madrigal Business Park as a pre-day celebration and to maximize our time as well while I am still in the Philippines.
We had coffee at Molito while binge-watching Ru Paul's Drag Race after unpacking in the hotel. It's our favorite reality TV show. After, we wander around Alabang Town Center, just spending nonsense together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
00:27 | June 12, 2022 (Intramuros, Philippines)
Alabang used to be just my workplace. I spent two years honing my customer service skills here as an employee of Interglobe Technologies, the company I hated so much. I learned a lot from them and most are taken from bad experiences. Yet somehow I am grateful. Grateful to meet colleauges that supported me for life like Iwa.
For the longest time that I've been here, it's no longer a brainer that I know the "not so explored" places around. So I brought my boyfriend to Kina Lola at exactly 12 midnight. It's a restaurant located at the very back of Madrigal, open 24 hours, serving delicious home-like meal. They are worth the visit. Happy Anniversary to us!
Tumblr media
At 12 pm, we checked out and headed to the museum. Out of all what we have planned to visit, we ended visiting the National Museum of Fine Arts alone until it closed. We really had no plans afterward so we stayed chatting at Starbucks in Mall of Asia.

Brotzeit Philippines Celebrates Oktoberfest 2023 With Signature Party Days
Tumblr media
It's that time of the year again when the beers start flowing and the parties go on and on. Oktoberfest 2023 is right around the corner so Brotzeit Philippines is giving us a head start with its Oktoberfest Menu which is available starting September 1 up to October 29, 2023! They will also be having their Signature Party Days from September 22 to 24 where guests can experience German music and entertainment combined with authentic German food and drinks.
Tumblr media
Brotzeit proudly celebrates Oktoberfest 2023 at its two branches in Alabang West Parade and at Shangri-La at the Fort this September and October. Oktoberfest is an annual festival held in Munich, Bavaria in Germany from mid-September to the first Sunday in October. This year, it will be held from September 16 to October 3, 2023, but you don't have to travel to Germany because Brotzeit is bringing the party right here in Manila.
Tumblr media
My friends and I got a sneak preview of what to expect at Brotzeit for Oktoberfest 2023. Brotzeit was conceived in Singapore in 2006 and now operates across the Asia Pacific region. It aims to introduce authentic Bavarian cuisine accompanied by world famous quality German beer in a chic and contemporary setting, so Oktoberfest is always one of its biggest events of the year. Now on their 10th year in the Philippines, there’s no better place to enjoy this annual German tradition than at the country’s most popular German bier bar and restaurant.
Tumblr media
Brotzeit is very proud of its German beers and these are taken very seriously from sourcing, using proper glassware, and even pouring techniques. All beers at Brotzeit are brewed according to the Germany purity law, so you are assured of an authentic German experience.
Tumblr media
We tried some of the exclusive Oktoberfest beers that can only be found at Brotzeit in the Philippines. Schneider's Bayrisch Hell is a traditional beer that is similar to its homeland, pure and full of character. On the other hand, the Schneider Weisse Tap 7 Original is a stronger beer that has a deep amber color. These beers can be ordered in 300ml (P300), 500ml (P440), or 1 Liter (P850) glasses.
Tumblr media
They also offer the Schneider Weisse Love Beer (P380) which has a lovely golden color and comes with aromas of citrus, stone fruit, and elderflower with flavors similar to Sauvignon Blanc. The beer has a refreshing tang that finishes with an earthy noble-hop bitterness.
Tumblr media
If you want to make the entire table happy, go for the Three-Liter Barrel (P2550) which can provide enough beers to last the entire evening.
Tumblr media
Another option is the Weihenstephaner Festbier, a full rich-bodied hoppy seasonal lager especially brewed for the Festbier season. I think The Pickiest Eater in the World had a bit too much beer during our party.
Tumblr media
Now let’s try some of the special Oktoberfest dishes. Brotzeit has created a new Oktoberfest Menu that perfectly represents the season and goes very well with the featured beers for this celebration. The Bratwurst Semmel Klassik (P450) is a Hungarian cheese sausage served with sauerkraut and sweet mustard on a brioche baguette.
Tumblr media
There's also the Bratwurst Semmel (P480) which is served with a mushroom sauce, gherkins and spring onions also on a brioche baguette. Both sausages come with a side of potato wedges which are also so good to nibble on.
Tumblr media
You can never go wrong with the Meterwurst (P1100). This sizzling meter-long grilled sausage spiral is best for bigger groups who just can't get enough of Brotzeit's sausages. It is also served with potato wedges and sauerkraut.
Tumblr media
For the meaty main courses, the Geräucherte BBQ Schweinerippcher (P1350) will surely give everyone enough energy to party. These juicy BBQ smoked pork ribs comes topped with coleslaw and is served with toasted garlic bread.
Tumblr media
I love steaks so my favorite would definitely be the Rinder Auf Dem Oktoberfest (P1200). This is 250 grams of Australian rib eye with pommes, and pfeffer sauce. The beef is cooked medium just the way I like it. It also comes with potato fries and salad so that makes it doubly good.
Tumblr media
If you really want to celebrate Oktoberfest, go and order the Oktoberfest Platter 2023 (P5200). This huge meaty platter will surely be the highlight of your Oktoberfest celebrations with is combination of Oktoberfest specials and Brotzeit favorites.
Tumblr media
This full platter comes with a Meterwurst, Brotzeit's Signature Pork Knuckle, BBQ Pork Spareribs, Australian Rib Eye and your choice of sides.
Tumblr media
You can order these separately from the Oktoberfest Menu but if you are with a big group, then the Oktoberfest Platter is the best way to go. I always love having Brotzeit's pork knuckles with its crispy skin and and very tender meat. Pair your order with any of Brotzeit's German beers for a perfect Oktoberfest combination.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
For desserts, try the Kaiserschmarren (P250) which is an Emperor's Pancake served with cranberry jam and apple sauce. You can also get the Apfelstrudel (P190) which has sweet spiced apples inside a flaky crust and served with whipped cream.
Tumblr media
I was happy to see my childhood friend Nikki Viola here at Brotzeit. Nikki now works for When in Manila as a correspondent so I get to see her more often now during media events.
Tumblr media
Brotzeit's Oktoberfest 2023 celebrations culminate with their Signature Party Days on September 22 to 24, 2023. This huge 3-day Oktoberfest party will be similar to how they do it in Germany. Special guests will be the AnTon Showband which is a popular German group that performs traditional German folk tunes to modern hits. They will be playing at Brotzeit Alabang West Parade on September 22 and 24 then at Shangri-La at the Fort on September 23. You can book your tables early and join this unforgettable musical journey at (https://www.brotzeitdelivers.com/reservation).
Tumblr media
We also got a sample of the activities you can find at Brotzeit in the next few weeks. An Oktoberfest party will not be complete without games and fun challenges, so Brotzeit will also be giving away great prizes for its guests during the Oktoberfest season.
Tumblr media
Try your skills at the beer mug lifting challenge for the girls, or the beer barrel challenge for the guys. There will also be beer drinking contests where the fastest group can win great merchandise and prizes from Brotzeit. My husband was more than ready to drink his beers.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
We would like to thank Malvin Ang and DK Herrera for hosting our Oktoberfest 2023 preview giving us another taste of this awesome German celebration. Head to Brotzeit now and experience this delightful Bavarian tradition yourselves. I love their giveaway shirts!
