Emerging Trends and Opportunities in the Middle East Biochemical Market
Tumblr media
Middle East Bio-chemical Market: Middle East Emerging as Hub for Bio-chemical Industry Rise of Bio-tech Startups in the Region Over the past decade, the Middle East has seen a sharp rise in the number of bio-tech startups being established across countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel. With strong government support and availability of risk capital, more young entrepreneurs are venturing into areas like pharmaceuticals, biologics development and agricultural biotechnology. Dubai based SAH Biotech for example is developing novel treatments for cancer and metabolic diseases while Tel Aviv's Moriku is focusing on developing plant-based proteins. Saudi Vision 2030 Driving Investment Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030 framework has identified the bio-technology sector as a strategic industry that can help diversify the oil dependent economy. Several Saudi cities like Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam have established bio-technology parks with state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure to attract foreign investments. The Kingdom also offers tax incentives and has created special purpose investment funds of over $1 billion dedicated for the life sciences industry. It aims to locally manufacture 50% of the country's pharmaceutical needs and become a top exporter of specialized drugs and agri products. Collaborations with International Institutes To accelerate innovation, Middle Eastern countries are forming strategic partnerships with leading research institutes globally. For instance, Egypt's Science and Technology Development Fund has tied up with Harvard University to collaborate on novel vaccine development projects. The UAE has signed MoUs with MIT and Imperial College London to jointly develop curriculums for bio-medical engineering programs. Saudi Arabia is working with the Pasteur Institute of Paris on initiatives focused on infectious disease control and food security. Such partnerships allow for transfer of knowledge and help build local R&D capabilities. Medical Tourism a Key Revenue Generator Countries like Dubai, Beirut and Doha are emerging as popular destinations for medical tourism in the region given their state-of-the-art private hospitals and availability of multi-specialty experts. Advanced procedures like joint replacement surgeries, invasive cardiology and fertility treatments which are much more cheaper compared to US or Europe are drawing patients from all over the world. In UAE alone, medical tourism currently generates over $1 billion in annual revenues. With continuous infrastructure and service upgrades, Middle Eastern nations aim to capture a major share of the estimated $100 billion global medical tourism market.

Odisha Receives Investment Intent Worth INR 26,000 Crore at Business Meet in Tokyo
Tumblr media
Odisha, one of the eastern states of India, has emerged as a hotspot for investments, attracting attention from global investors. The recent business meet held in Tokyo, Japan, has witnessed a significant influx of investment intent worth INR 26,000 crore into the state. This development has further strengthened Odisha's position as an attractive investment destination in India.
The business meet, organised by the Government of Odisha in collaboration with various stakeholders, was aimed at showcasing the state's immense potential across sectors such as manufacturing, tourism, agribusiness, petrochemicals, textiles, and more. The event witnessed participation from leading Japanese companies, business leaders, and government officials, all eager to explore investment opportunities in Odisha.
One of the key sectors that garnered significant interest from investors was manufacturing. Odisha has a robust manufacturing ecosystem, with dedicated industrial parks, clusters, and SEZs (Special Economic Zones) that provide a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. Several Japanese companies, including major automobile manufacturers, have expressed their intent to set up manufacturing units in Odisha, citing the state's strategic location, skilled workforce, and conducive business environment as key factors.
In addition to manufacturing, the tourism sector in Odisha has also been a major draw for investors. The state is known for its rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, and tribal tourism. The Government of Odisha has been actively promoting tourism in the state and has rolled out various incentives and policies to attract investments in the sector. As a result, several Japanese companies have shown interest in investing in tourism infrastructure and services in Odisha, including hotels, resorts, and adventure tourism facilities.
Another sector that has received significant investment intent is agribusiness. Odisha has vast tracts of fertile land and favorable agro-climatic conditions, making it ideal for agriculture and allied activities. The state has been actively promoting agribusiness and has implemented various policies and initiatives to boost agriculture and allied sectors. Japanese investors have expressed interest in investing in food processing, cold storage, agri-infrastructure, and research and development in the agriculture sector in Odisha.
Petrochemicals and textiles are also sectors that have received attention from Japanese investors. Odisha has abundant natural resources, including oil and gas reserves, which make it attractive for investments in petrochemicals. The state is also known for its handloom and handicrafts, with a rich tradition of textiles. Japanese companies have expressed interest in setting up petrochemical units, textile parks, and textile manufacturing facilities in Odisha, leveraging the state's resources and skilled workforce.
The investment intent of INR 26,000 crore received at the business meet in Tokyo is a testament to the state government's efforts to create a favorable investment climate in Odisha. The government has implemented various policy reforms, such as ease of doing business initiatives, single-window clearance, and industry-friendly policies, to attract investments and promote economic growth in the state. The government has also been proactive in addressing infrastructural challenges and has made significant investments in improving infrastructure, including roads, ports, and power supply, to support businesses.
The influx of investments in Odisha is expected to have a positive impact on the state's economy. It will create job opportunities, boost industrial development, and contribute to the overall socio-economic growth of the state. The investments are also expected to enhance technology transfer, skill development, and knowledge sharing, as Japanese companies are known for their expertise and innovation in various sectors.

Five authentic ecotourism plans in Spain
Tumblr media
The stellar viewpoint of Helechosa de los Montes, in the biosphere reserve of Siberia Extremadura (Badajoz).
Good eating, watching skies or cetaceans and other proposals in Spanish biosphere reserves to fall in love with their landscapes and cultural heritage
“Out of pure love, you contribute to conservation.” The ecotourism philosophy is based, according to Amanda Guzmán, manager of the Ecotourism Club in Spain[1], on a crush between tourists and landscape. “Whoever really knows the values of a territory, both natural and cultural, ends up falling in love with it, and in some way ends up committing to its preservation”, she explains. "It helps to dedicate more budget to natural spaces, rural areas have more services, more local products are consumed, and, ultimately, ecotourism is an economic engine and a tool for conservation."
This idyll with nature and, in many cases, with territories in the empty part of Spain, was already gaining followers before the pandemic, but with the effect of covid-19 it has skyrocketed. "In July and August of 2020 and 2021, the numbers of visitors to protected areas have skyrocketed, even in some lesser-known areas such as Siberia in Extremadura, where there was a full occupation last summer," says Guzmán. According to the Ecotourism Observatory,[2] the main statistical indicator of this tourist segment in Spain, for 56% of those surveyed in 2020 it was their first time in the natural space they visited, and 26.5% changed their initial travel plan (cultural , sun and beach) for a nature destination as a result of the situation created by the pandemic.
"What distinguishes ecotourism from other types of tourism is the motivation of the visitor to get to know that environment, to discover its values," explains Guzmán. For this reason, the interpretation –with a guided route or visiting an information centre– is the differential factor. For example, regarding active tourism, whose activities are also carried out in the natural environment. “It doesn't matter just where you do it; It doesn't matter just what you do; It matters how you do it”, adds Guzmán. The authentic ecotourism experience fulfils a third premise: impacting the environment as little as possible, contributing to its conservation and having an impact on local development. "That the benefit generated by the trip stays in accommodation, guides and other sectors of that area, such as crafts or agri-food."
To guarantee this, the Ecotourism Club in Spain accredits companies and territories committed to the requirements of true ecotourism, complying with certifications such as the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS)[3], in whose application in Spain Amanda Guzmán is a specialist. The association brings together 22 destinations and 584 accredited companies in our country, as well as 12 Spanish biosphere reserves, ideal environments for true ecotourism since, in addition to the conservation of biodiversity, they prioritise the preservation of cultural heritage and development sustainable economic development for the communities that inhabit them. "They also value the uses of the territory and the local population," says Guzmán. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Man and Biosphere programme[4], started by Unesco in November 1971, and which has designated a total of 727 reserves in 131 countries, 53 of them in Spain –world leader in these protected areas–, we propose five experiences of true ecotourism in as many Spanish biosphere reserves to enjoy more responsible travel in 2022.
1. Siberia at night
Badajoz (Extremadura)
"Through the night sky we give value to an area whose depopulation explains precisely why it is so good for seeing the stars," says Enrique Martín, one of the monitors with a Starlight and Sky Guide degree who offers astronomical outreach sessions. at the Cíjara Mágico farm (15 euros per person), in the Siberia[5] Extremeña biosphere reserve. They are on the shores of the Cíjara reservoir, whose night sky is among the highest quality in the world. "Due to its isolation, light pollution is zero and we have nearly 80% clear skies a year [270 nights on average]," explains Susana Bertomeu, a technician at this protected area recognized by Unesco in 2019 and that has for its development a Sustainability Plan from the Ministry of Tourism that exceeds two million euros of investment. “We try to explain to people what they are seeing in the sky”, explains Martín, “and relate it to other aspects. When we do activities with children, for example, we connect the constellations with Greek, Roman and Arabic legends”. Sometimes, the transfer to the nearby stellar viewpoint of Helechosa de los Montes is included. There they explain how the viewpoint is used, as well as the Extremadura Good Night program, which, in addition to this network of observatories on whose surface the visible constellations are backlit, includes a wide catalogue of Astro experiences.
2. Unknown Alpujarra
Almeria (Andalusia)
Tumblr media
Rambla de los Yesos
A great unknown. This is how Teresa Madrona defines the Alpujarra[6] of Almería. "Most of them tend to stay in the Poqueira valley of Granada, but there are more Alpujarras to the east," explains the founder of Ecoturismo Granada. To locate the area on the map, this agency offers a four-day hiking route for groups of at least six hikers (308 euros per person) that delves into the landscapes and cultural legacy of this territory to the south of the Sierra Nevada, last resting place of the Nasrid king Boabdil[7]. Always accompanied by local guides, unique settings are covered and interpreted such as the Rambla de los Yesos, located in the town of Alboloduy[8] —“a small Grand Canyon”, says Madrona—; oak and chestnut forests, and towns as Alpujarreños and as Terque[9], where you can visit the museum dedicated to the shipping grape, a native of the area. “Its cultivation was a very important economic activity in the 19th century, since it lasted five months packaged and could be exported by boat. It was consumed in New York, in Brooklyn stores,” she explains. The bourgeois mansions preserved in the old part of this town, such as the Casa de los Caballitos, bear witness to that economic splendour.
3. Biosphere Bites
A Coruña (Galicia)
What does the biosphere taste like? To discover it, you have to sit at the table of the Biosphere Restaurants, an agri-food ecotourism project in the protected area of Mariñas Coruñesas and Terras do Mandeo[10], which brings together 22 premises certified with the Biosphere Reserves quality mark, as that meet requirements such as the use of raw materials from the territory, good environmental management of their spaces, as well as continuous training and recycling to improve year after year.
Tumblr media
Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo
"Not everything is about the environment in these protected areas," says Diego López, a technician at this A Coruña[11] reserve, who explains the depth of this initiative that also involves more than 30 local micro-producers of organic dairy products, jams, spices and tea. In some cases, he assures him, "it has even made it possible to recover agricultural varieties that were disappearing." The recently created Agro-Food Route allows the traveller to understand how the project (started in 2016) has been built, since, explains López, "first they visit some of these companies attached to the brand [such as organic farming centres, artisan cheese shops, wineries ] and then you can enjoy a Biosphere Menu in one of the restaurants on the programme, where the chef details the origin of the products, how they are made and even how to taste them”.
4. Whales ahead!
La Gomera (Canary Islands)
Juan José Jiménez, captain of the Amazonia, speaks slowly, without haste, just like the quiet ecotourism voyages (with CETS certification) to watch cetaceans that he offers all year round on board a boat for a maximum of 12 people. There are other larger boats in the Valle Gran Rey area[12], to the south of the island of La Gomera,[13] "but, honestly, many visitors prefer these smaller groups," he says. Along with him, a specialised guide interprets these meetings in several languages, which are always respectful in duration, distance and, also, with the behaviour of the animals. “The dolphins are more playful, they come to meet the boat”, explains the captain, “but the pilot whales normally have to be followed and when they get tired of it they show it. They are very noble animals, but they also want your respect.” Depending on the season, you can see large tropical fin whales, the largest cetacean after the blue whale.

Valle Gran Rey (La Gomera)
The voyage (42 euros per person) then looks for calm anchorages off the Canary coast, where you can take a quiet dip and enjoy a vegetarian paella and wine on deck. The return to port, almost four hours after having set sail, is done "coasting, to contemplate everything from crabs to the flight of herons, seagulls or an osprey", points out the patron of the Amazon.
5. Talayotic legends
Menorca (Balearic Islands)
Tumblr media
Torralba d'en Salort
Menorca's[14] archaeological legacy is so unique that it aspires to be a world heritage site in 2022, says Irene Estaún, director of the island's biosphere reserve. "The set of Menorcan archaeological elements declared of cultural interest exceeds a thousand", she justifies, and they are perfect settings for cultural ecotourism thanks to the visits offered by local micro-enterprises, with an added incentive. “Many have been created by the archaeologists themselves who work in the excavations, who conduct the activities discovering to the visitor the value of each site,” she explains. The menorcatalayotica.info website brings together some thirty of these sites, among which Estaún chooses three. Torre d'en Galmés[15], with 4.5 hectares, "a very complete complex"; the Naveta des Tudons[16], "a building that, due to its age and conservation, and because it is unique in the world, is an emblematic monument", and the Talayotic village of Torralba d'en Salort[17], where Nurarq, a project by Irene Riudavets and Cristina Bravo, proposes from June to October different approaches to the historical richness of the place. Like a tour that interprets and contrasts legends and archaeological evidence, dramatized routes that take the visitor back to life in Menorcan prehistory, yoga in front of the great Torralba taula (five meters high) or a night visit to this megalithic sanctuary that includes an astrotourism session.

Roles played by agricultural events in a farmer's life
Tumblr media
Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy. Agriculture has a tremendous impact on India's overall economic growth. India's agriculture industry accounts for 1% of the country's exports. The fairs provide a market for high-quality seeds, such as beans and groundnuts, that are not generally available through industrial sellers. Input trade fairs assist local agricultural retail companies and encourage them to expand their trade to more remote places, which benefits both them and farmers.
The community and the government fund several fairs and exhibitions to encourage people to network and learn new things. There are many events and festivals held by the government in order to keep our farmers up to date with the latest information and facilities, so these events play a major role in a farmer’s life.
What Do Farmers Stand to Gain from the Fair?
Promotion of goods, brands, and services at farmers' markets reaches a large potential market. The event provides an opportunity to network with consumers, potential dealers, and agencies. The fair displays and promotes valuable items and services. The farmers' market offers live demonstrations of the most recent concepts and technologies.
The major objective and purpose of this programme are to provide answers to critical concerns that farmers face and to increase knowledge about improved production practices, crop protection tactics, and post-harvest management approaches. The event brings together agri-professionals, policymakers, government representatives, like-minded individuals, and media from around India to discuss the agricultural business.
Fairs and festivals' role in agriculture and rural development
Festivals and special events are well-known for their importance in destination development as attractions, image builders, animators of static attractions, and catalysts for further developments. In addition to the economic benefit of increased tourism, festivals and special events extend the destination's tourist season, provide cultural and educational opportunities, foster a sense of community pride, help conserve sensitive natural, social, and cultural environments, and contribute to sustainable development.
Event and festival tourism is one of the fastest expanding segments of the tourist industry. It is gaining popularity in rural regions as a method of revitalizing local economies. According to the International Festival and Event Association (IFEA), the special events business is projected to have 4 to 5 million regularly recurring events and has a substantial economic impact.
The benefits of festivals and special events are more clearly illustrated in rural areas, notably in terms of improving local economies, sustaining employment, and promoting rural destinations.
 Increased expenditures:
• Creation of employment
• An increase in labour supply
• Increase in standard of living
• Increased awareness of the region as a travel and tourism destination
• Increased knowledge concerning the potential for investment and commercial activity in the region
• Creation of new accommodation and tourist attractions
• Increase in accessibility
• Construction of new facilities
• Improvement of local infrastructure
• Preservation of heritage
• permanent increase in local interest and participation in types of activities associated with the event(s)
• Strengthening of regional values and traditions
• Increased local pride and community spirit
• Increased awareness of non-local perceptions
• Enhanced international recognition of the region and its values
• Development of skills among planners

In metropolitan areas where enough space is scarce, urban farming may be a blessing to citizens and the general public. Recently, health concerns have shifted residents' attention to food safety, a healthy environment, and beautiful surroundings.
