Leaders declare that #itstime for bold #energy action and call for everyone to step up and prepare their Energy Compacts, setting out voluntary commitments and actions to achieve clean, #affordableenergy for all by 2030 ( #SDG7) and net zero emissions by 2050. These Compacts will start to be rolled out at the Ministerial Thematic Forums (21-25 June, virtual) and gather momentum as a major outcome of the High-level Dialogue on Energy in September.
Call for Energy Compacts PSA featuring leaders from the UN, business, philanthropy, cities, NGOs and youth. #SA4ALL

UNIDO: Fostering energy technology in Burkina Faso and Mozambique
Two signature projects in Africa stand as testament to the work UNIDO has done to deliver clean, efficient, affordable energy to people in developing countries. In Burkina Faso, the UNIDO project “Promoting energy efficiency technologies in the beer brewing sector” is working directly with women beer brewers in order to promote the use of energy efficient cook stoves. And in Mozambique, UNIDO is helping people to better access to water through the use of solar-powered water pumps.
The project in Burkina Faso has brought clean, efficient cookstoves to women who have traditionally burned firewood to power their homes and businesses. The project has had broad effects in multiple dimensions: from the environment to health to the socio-economic development of its beneficiaries: The project achieved GHG emissions reductions and reduced the consumption of firewood by 40- 50%, while creating a strong market for energy efficient stoves.
Nikiema Kimnoaga, one of the beneficiaries, explained how her health has improved greatly since the installment of improved cook stoves, now that she is no longer exposed to the toxic smoke from her previous traditional stove. Freed of the obligation to search for wood, Mrs. Kimnoga and her nearly 1000 co-beneficiaries have been able to make better use of some 50 hours per month, while increasing their income significantly.
Water Access in Mozambique
The Chicualacuala District of Mozambique suffers from significant water shortages. As part of the UN Joint Programme on Environment Mainstreaming and Adaptation to Climate Change in Mozambique, UNIDO designed and installed solar water pumping systems for drinking water and irrigation in five villages: Bragança, Chicualacuala B, Madulo, Mepuzi, and Ndombe in Chicualacuala.
Alda Chaúque, living in Bragança, used to walk 17 km to fetch water at the river, where there was often not even enough water to drink. The project drilled a borehole and installed a solar water pump system that extracts water from a depth of more than 100 meters. Today, Alda can collect water a stone throw away from her house. Besides having enough water to drink and wash, she cultivates a small plot of land and grows orange trees, tomatoes and cabbage, which she can sell within the community.
Projects like these show that combatting climate change isn’t all about reducing emissions in developed countries. It is also about delivering clean energy access in the countries that are on the front lines of climate change’s effects. In helping people build sustainable and resilient communities and economies, we are also paving the way for a clean, efficient energy future, with access sustainable energy for all.
