Today’s Chapel was abominable.

The TL;DR version: in an attempt to be “honest,” Pettit lied about campus crime.

For those who’d like the longer version, here’s what he said:

Is stealing today an ongoing sin among believers? Do you think we have stealing at Bob Jones University? I read this morning the Clery Report. Do you know what the Clery Report is? It’s what we turn in to the government of what kind of crimes we have on campus at Bob Jones University. So I read the Clery Report this morning just to make sure I was accurate. And our Clery report dates back to 2014 through ’16; ’17 is being sent in.

Now let me be honest with you: Bob Jones University is incredibly safe. Almost every… uh every area there was just zero. Nothing going on.

Except one area: It’s called burglary. It’s the #1 crime on the campus of Bob Jones University. We actually have people who pay good money to go here who steal from other people.

Now we don’t have many thieves, but we do have thieves among us.

Let’s take this line by line:

“Is stealing today an ongoing sin among believers? Do you think we have stealing at Bob Jones University?”

Alumni, faculty, and students have been telling you this is a problem for years, Steve, so this isn’t news.

“I read this morning the Clery Report.”

Just this morning? WutBJU read it the day it came out, and the Collegian made a big PR campaign out of it (in which they didn’t cite the latest report, btw).

“Do you know what the Clery Report is? It’s what we turn in to the government of what kind of crimes we have on campus at Bob Jones University.”

You should be talking about this a lot more, Steve, but alas -- this is a problem at many college campuses.

“So I read the Clery Report this morning just to make sure I was accurate.”

Well, that’s good. Accuracy and honesty is important.

“And our Clery report dates back to 2014 through ’16; ’17 is being sent in.”

Well, now . . . There are several weeks left in 2017, so it’s not really “being sent in.”

“Now let me be honest with you...”

Uh oh. This doesn’t bode well. Remember when Pettit said after the GRACE Report, “in the spirit of candor,” and then proceeded to lie about every conclusion in the GRACE Report? This is how Pettit does it. This is his tell.

That and when he rubs his right index finger and thumb together.

“Bob Jones University is incredibly safe.”

No. It’s not. A college doesn’t require a two-year-long comprehensive investigation that costs nearly a million dollars because it’s “safe.”

Everything about Bob Jones University isn’t safe -- from Pettit’s consorting with Chuck Phelps to his actions today in the chapel platform.

Bob Jones University is not safe.

“Almost every… uh every area there was just zero. Nothing going on.”

What? Almost every area there was just zero? “Nothing going on”?

Here’s the most recent Clery Report, folks:

There’s a big something going on there under “forcible rape.” That Pettit is glossing that over makes this more dangerous. You’re trumpeting the danger, Pettit! You’re calling attention to it.

“Except one area: It’s called burglary. It’s the #1 crime on the campus of Bob Jones University.”

If we’re talking quantity, sure. But let’s talk quality. Which is worse: someone lifting an iPad from an unlocked dorm room or a minor getting sexually assaulted? One is a monetary loss. The other? It’s a loss of agency, humanity, and sanctity. Is that how you judge crime, Pettit? By quantity? That’s not how the rest of the planet judges crime.

“We actually have people who pay good money to go here who steal from other people.”

The bigger shock? BJU actually has a president who, while trumpeting “honesty,” will go to great lengths to lie about the worst crime on the BJU campus: forcible rape.

This sermon and the Collegian’s propaganda with the BJU Campus Safety department are current examples that prove that BJU really doesn’t want the students to know the truth about campus crime at Bob Jones University.

And that makes it all the more unsafe.
