Lonely Mans Lazarus - Movement in Animation
For a project last year we were asked to find an animation style to emulate for our portion of a group project. In this project I chose to try the style of lonely mans Lazarus.
youtube
I discovered LML as they were posting the animation process of her the mind electric animation and found it fascinating. The amount of strong movement and emotion she is able to evoke in her animations is something I had never seen before and I found very interesting.
When talking about her animating process, Daisy mostly talks of her musical inspiration. With a love for opera she allows the music to lead the emotion and movement of the piece. Starting an animation, she already has music picked out and marks down the high and low moments of the music to lead the animation.
The amount of movement she creates in her animations is something I would like to try and move towards in future as many of my animations are quite static and I think that is one of the things that hold them back. In these animation she creates movement through not only the physical movement of the characters but also the movement of the camera, environment and the line work. This range of movement really heightens the emotions of the animations.

A style I really enjoy is the Spiderverse art style. It's so simplistic and stylised. When you look closely, its just made up simple line strokes and shapes that make up something intricate when zoomed out. As someone new to background art, I feel like this style is great practice, as it's stylised I don't want to replicate it complete, as I want to create my own style, but it's great for practice. So using the techniques I saw I created my own drawing, and to greatly aid me, I used Devin Elle Kurtz city brushes which came with window brushes and building brushes. This took me at least 5 hours to do, because of the level of detail. The process is very simple, it's just repeating it for each building which extends the time it takes to complete the drawing.
I really like the result of this drawing. I wanted to use a limited colour pallet and I feel like I achieved that, I also limited the use of textured brushes for the pavement and road.

Background Design
When It came to researching background Design I knew that I had to go back to the basics and relearned everything that makes up good background design, so to do this I went to one of my favourite art YouTube channels called Bam Animation and I watched two of their videos on backgrounds and from these two videos I feel like I learned a lot but I will continue to go back to them as I still believe that it would be better to keep myself reminded of what to do in background design.

After following these two videos here is my first attempt at making a background I already know that there is more I can do to improve myself further.

AX3021 & AX3333- University - Major Project & TV Series (Summer) - Project Reflection
Today was our final day for both of our summer projects being the ideas for  our major project (AX3021) and our TV series ideas project (AX3333). In this post I will be reflecting back on these projects together. I created these projects back to back, so I felt it was best to address them both within the same blog post.
Major Project
During the time I have had with working on the Major project, I feel that I have learnt so much over the this summer period. I also feel that I had found new things about myself along the way and used what I had learned to try and teach myself new things. The Major project was not only coming up with three ideas to work on for the duration of the third year, but for me to try and learn new skills and techniques, especially when it comes to drawing and illustration.
Tumblr media
Learning to understand aspects of drawing such a depth, lighting and shading as well as gaining a greater understanding of complimentary colours and different variations was very useful. I felt with each piece of concept I had created, I could feel myself improving and if I felt that I was not improving I would try to focus on something else such as applying details and aspects to the concept. Other aspects such as trying learn/ understand how to draw human posture and differences between male and female characters, was another important lesson I have been improving upon over the course of the summer. The lessons I had learned over this project, I would sometimes try and put a twist on the lessons I had learned. For example when learning that male characters are usually more angular and females are more soft/ curved in their design, I would apply this to characters, such as the electrons and their outer rings being sharp and angular for male or and curvy and soft for the female characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I felt that my presentation for this project went alright, as I feel I was able to explain and establish the worlds of these ideas and characters who live within them to my class and tutor. Unfortunately some of the images that should have been in the power point were not loading which was unfortunate, but in the end I think things worked out ok.
Tumblr media
TV Series
For the TV series side of the project, I felt that I was able to come up with some good ideas, from shows based on more action and heists, to calm spirit infested beaches. For most the TV series I wanted to try and experiment with my ideas and try to add twists to the status-quo of creating and developing a show.
Tumblr media
The biggest condenser for applying these twists was the stone wall arches. But with the other two ideas I wanted to try and stick with something safer just in case, but I feel satisfied with all three ideas. As with the major project each concept I created had me either trying something new or trying to improve an aspect I was learning over the summer period. Easily the two hardest and longest pieces to create was the main area of the Stone Wall Arches and Sagarda Famillia Cathedral for Tip Toe on the Road. Both concepts were large in scale and had many features such as distant towns to a variety of statues, both of these images had a lot of work put into them both to try and make them look as best as they can be (and for the Sagarda Famillia looking like the original as much as possible).
Tumblr media
Presenting these ideas was very tricky for to explain as each idea had it’s own twist and it’s own plot, trying to get an audience on board who know nothing about the project prior was difficult. In the end it seemed like most people understood Tip-Toe, some understood Shadow Antics (albeit I would need to change the age of the target audience), but people struggled to grasp the Stone Wall Arches. It’s shame really as the Stone Wall Arches was the idea I was most passionate about, but I have a little more time to see if I can flesh it out, if not I would need to let go of the idea, which is part of the course and sometimes a decision needs to be made and ideas need to be let go.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts
At the end of all of this both projects and presentations done, I feel satisfied. I am happy with the projects I have been able to achieve, happy about the self improvement and progression I have made and happy with my presentations. If I were to do this project again though, I would focus a lot more on the explanation aspect of my projects, as I felt that I had lost a few people with one or two of my ideas, but I feel happy with nearly everything else. It was tough deciding my 6 ideas total, which stay which go and which become major projects or TV series as at one point all my ideas had been written and adapted to work in both projects. For example at one point Electrons was a series focusing on the Electrons within different devices resulting in different environments/ locations.
Tumblr media
Anything I was uncertain about, or felt I needed to improve upon will take precedence going forward, as part of the major project is continue with improving ourselves. Here’s hoping the final TV series and Major Project go well.

~THE BOYS DIABOLICAL~
I really enjoyed this show when it fist came out, and how it used different animation styles. I am going to talk about a few episodes and why they chose the style they went for.
~LAZER BABY'S DAY OUT~
For this animation the tone is comedic and writes Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wanted to pay homage to cartoons they grew up watching, so they based it on The Loony Tunes style and even use some of its quips. The fact that the animation lacks dialogue and relies on movement and comedic timing to convey a story is reminiscent of older cartoons. An animation studio called Snipple animated this episode and have previously animated older style cartoons like Jellystone and Wacky Races.
I like the use of homage in a unique way. Having a funny catch me if you can story with blood and gore with a retro style animation. Doing character mashups in the past, I feel like it's important as an artist to be able to replicate well known styles in the industry, as there will be someone, like Rogena and Goldberg, wanting to hire someone to replicate styles of other animations.
Tumblr media
~BFF'S~
Another comedic episode. It has a stylised anime feel t0 it too; the colour scheme is bright and colourful which compliments the funny and wacky tone of the story. The director, Madeline Flores also used her childhood of watching Pokemon and pushed towards the animation to have a more anime look. The round edges used for the characters are reminiscent to Steven Universe, where a Korean studio animated it. This animation was animated by a Korean animation studio called Edge Animation.
Tumblr media
~JOHN AND SUN HEE~
This story is more serious and sad compared to the other two animation, but they style is the most unique out of all the episodes on the show and was really nice to see. The colours were toned down and the line art was thin to represent the old and frailness of the main characters. Another Korean animation studio, Studio Animal, animated this episode. The director has a personal connection to the story and thought it would be best if the whole episode was directed and composed and voiced acted by Korean people. Studio Animal mainly animate in a manga style, but took a different direction with this animation, which I feel like suits the story better, as it's story based, so its more illustrative.
This is a great example of using the correct art style to convey an emotional, serious story. As someone who dabbles in different styles, I feel like this is important for me to utilise my own styles in different ways when it comes to storytelling. For example, my 2 minute film was a comedic one, so for time sake and style, I went for my cartoon style instead off my semi realistic style, which is what I was going to go for initially. I feel like the change if style choice payed off well, as it suited the animation better.

The script for The Babysitter, this is my third draft for it. I might change it after storyboarding to see if anything shiuld get cut out or added in. With a simpler story, it'll be more easier to do that.

Since the child is a shapeshifter. I wanted to look at different mythological creatures. I looked at Kalima, Tiyanak and Lamia. I liked the concept of all three. I ended up giving the child the name 'Tiya' because the Tiyanak characteristics link to her the most' although she won't be a toddler, rather an early teen / preteen. Here are some reference videos.

New Final Project Idea
The Babysitter
3 minute Film Synopsis:
It starts with the child attempting to create an iDance video (like a tiktok.) The video is ruined as the babysitter is vaping and ruins the shot with the smoke. She convinces the babysitter to join her iDance video, in return, she won’t tell her parents about her vaping.
Later on, the babysitter mixes a strange concoction for the child to drink as she requested, and the child states how the video already has lots of views. She gives the child a drink and the phone rings on the counter, it’s the mother.
Mother: Hey (babysitter’s name) are in? a neighbour said our lights are on.
Babysitter: Yeah, I’m with (the child’s name)
Mother: No, (child’s name) is with us right now
A shadow emerges of the child transforming into a monster.
Either:
The shot ends in black with the babysitter screaming
The shot ends with the phone dropped on the phone with the mother calling out for the babysitter, and the babysitter screaming.
Ends with the phone with the iDance video with the child and babysitter
Clues:
The TV is on the news channel warning people about intruders in the neighbourhood.
Or
Tv is on the documentary channel about chameleons.
I had a revelation that I didn't like the way my first idea was turning out. So I'm starting from scratch.

Claire Curneen
Tumblr media
Claire Curneen is a porcelain artist. She depicts martyrs from fables, myths, and religious texts. The figures have unusual proportions, with their sacrifice being acknowledged in their blood being golden.
I like her work because the figures are imperfect and her other work feels like it could serve as a stop-motion animation set. I would like to draw from her work when I make my own figures and sets.

Elissa Farrow Savos
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elissa Farrow Savos is a sculpture artist who incorporates found objects into her work, making them a cabinet of curiosities in their own right. Her work is imperfect by design and I like that, with the cracks being darker and emphasized. She is inspired by the role of women in the home and breaking from that mold.

Peter Randall Page's work feels otherworldly and grotesque to me. In some ways, it reminds my of Tropophobia or the fear of holes. In others, it makes me think of HP Lovecraft and his descriptions of beasts and non-Euclidean geometry.

If Anything Happens I Love You
Tumblr media
'If Anything Happens I Love you' is a short film directed by Will McCormack and Michael Govier. The film was released on Netflix and tells the story of two parents confronting the loss of their child, who was killed in a school shooting, with the title referring to the last text sent to the parents by their daughter before she was killed.
The film is devastating. At one point, the shadows of the parents try desperately to stop their daughter entering the school where she was killed and it's difficult to watch. In Amarica, it is a legitimate fear that their child might die to an act of gun violence. Generally, one of the worst things a parent can go through is losing a child.
The film worked closely with Everytown for Gun Safety and was incredibly tactful with their handling of serious topics. I hope to be able to tackle difficult topics like this in my own work without being insensitive or distasteful.
In regards to animation, the style is fitting, with the film being predominantly black and white with splashes of colour with meaning. This is what I hope to achieve with my TV Series.

Faith Humphrey Hill
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Faith Humphrey Hill is a mixed media artist who creates animated portraits using a combination of traditional knitting and digital drawing. These are beautiful and short animations made of people and pets.
In regards to 2D animation, this is a method I would like to try in the future. I really like the texture of the knitting and the crosshatching too.
